Clemson doesn’t deserve it. They’ve looked good not number 1 in their first 2 games. I have:

1) Bama

2) Oklahoma

3) Clemson

4) LSU

5) OSU

HS
ballotboxco's picture

Reality says after watching all the games today:

1) LSU

2) Alabama

3_6 exchangeable

Ohio State, Clemson, Oklahoma, Wisconsin I think Ohio State is the better of the four left and if they continue to learn - they will be number one by the end of the year.

Number one, win the rivalry game. And number two, win every game after that.

HS
Mantis's picture

LSU will jump us, we will move down to 6 after beating a fringe top-25 team 42-0 lol

HS
ballotboxco's picture

LSU should jump us, and I also could see a justification for putting us at 3 behind Alabama.  Ohio State can become a juggernaut this year.  Keep working getting the wrinkles ironed out.  Fields is the real deal thus far.  He's unbelievable to be honest.

Number one, win the rivalry game. And number two, win every game after that.

HS
Sunny Buck's picture

The only way OSU can get in the playoffs is to go undefeated. Even a close loss to a good team will not be good enough. Since Auburn beat Oregon and LSU beat Texas, the SEC superiority narrative will allow them and Clemson to get all four playoff spots. I know, it's early in the season, but this is all we will hear from the experts.

Remember the first year of the playoffs, and this narrative was already in place?  My avatar remembers...

HS
Extramedium's picture

It’s  a good thing the AP doesn’t decide who gets to the playoffs. We can lose a game... we just can’t lose to Purdue or Iowa by multiple touchdowns.

HS
analyticalguy's picture

The only absolute for ANY Power 5 teams is "go undefeated (winning your conference) and you're in," and THAT comes with an asterisk (I.e., you MAY not get in if there would be 5 such teams). Three loss teams and 2-loss non championship teams are also going to be out. In all other situations, it depends on what other top teams do. Yes, there may be a slight SEC bias (not so much with the committee as with the AP poll), but there are no hard and fast rules that would exclude Ohio State (who made it in as both a one-liss champion and a obe-loss non-champion).

HS
AZBUCKFAN's picture

The way Herbstreit and Davis were gushing over LSU, that wouldn't surprise me. Can't drop Georgia (SEC team) or Oklahoma either. so...

HS

We’ll have plenty of chances to jump teams with our schedule this year

I imagine 4. LSU and 5. OSU

HS

LSU and Texas are both overrated.

Neither seems to know how to play Defense.

To be fair, so was Cincinnati.  They were so overhyped on these boards, there was no other option but to be disappointed with how the outside world views that win.

Michigan is not a top ten team.  Not because I dislike them, but because they are not a sound football team.

Wisconsin is better than Florida and Notre Dame, Auburn is better than Notre Dame.

IMHO What it should be (I don't care what Clemson did in 2018, 2019 they are barely top 10.
1) LSU
2) Alabama
3_6 Ohio State, Oklahoma, Georgia, Wisconsin (interchangeably).
7) Auburn

Listening to Reece and Kirk talk about putting LSU at #1 or #2 was kind of ridiculous. They said it was because other teams ahead of them are playing well but it’s too early to recognize the quality of their opponents, yet LSU deserves credit for beating Texas. Apparently it’s too early to say which teams are good, except for Texas. Haven’t they learned that assuming “Texas is back” has become an annual tradition that continues to be proven wrong?

HS
ballotboxco's picture

LSU is a very good team man - I just watch that game, and while I think our defense is much better than Texas, that would be a serious challenge after week 2 for us.  That's a very good team if not great.  They deserve to be number 1 for week 2.

Number one, win the rivalry game. And number two, win every game after that.

HS
Buckeyejohn's picture

I get what you are saying, but LSU just made the first statement win. Clemson made a statement as well, but that was a home game against a worse team. I think you can still leave Clemson at 1, but LSU should be 2. Alabama and the rest haven’t done anything.

HS
Extramedium's picture

The problem with considering it a “statement win” is that it is based on the assumption that Texas is any good.  That’s why preseason and early season polls are so useless and the only poll that counts for anything doesn’t come out until October.

I don't think Clemson is that good.  I'm sorry, they play a team with even an okay corner this year and it's over.  Something is wrong - at least through week 2, I have them at 10.  I see many other teams that are much better including UNC.

Number one, win the rivalry game. And number two, win every game after that.

Yeah. It was an AP poll prediction, not a "who I think is the best team" ranking. It's too early in the season to draw any conclusions

Alabama 1st team

Then Ohio St would be around like 20th

Right now i'd see lsu jumping to 3 or 4 and sliding everyone else down a spot. Michigan should be down to 10, deserves to drop more but they won't yet.
Clemson looks surprisingly mortal so far. But they will be undefeated again in the regular season. Absolutely nobody left on their schedule.
Apart from bama and Ga having undefeated regular seasons the SEC will play each other out of the post steason.

HS
ballotboxco's picture

LSU offensively was legit today, but is that because Texas Defense is trash or because they are super good.  I'm leaning towards the latter - I think they deserve the number one spot.  Best game I watched all day - including Ohio State.

Number one, win the rivalry game. And number two, win every game after that.

HS

They have been impressive indeed. I guess I'm not as high on Texas as most but LSU will definitely make things interesting this year.

They would never do this, but

1. LSU, Bama

3. Clemson, Ohio State

5. Oklahoma, Georgia

7-25 not relevant for playoffs at the moment... seems like a huge void between 1-6 and 7 right now. Honestly though, just keep winning and avoid injuries...

Dang they looked good! They have some legit athletes at the skill and that QB can sling it! That’s a game we can’t take for granted.

I believe Maryland will beat Penn State, Michigan and MSU this year. They will be the surprise team of the season.

I predicted in a different thread that they would put Syracuse to the torch and they absolutely did. They deserve every bit of a top 25 ranking right now, and I hope they get it. Looking at their schedule, There is an excellent chance they enter November with only one loss.

As a side note, how collectively bad is every conference not named the SEC or Big 10?

Clemson could go the entire season and not play a single team ranked in the top 25 by seasons end. The PAC is a dumpster fire of mediocrity (is Utah really their best team?). And whose the third best team in the Big 12 (the answer is no one)?

You could make a serious argument that a team like Maryland or Iowa would be the second best team in the ACC, third best in the Big 12, and battling for the conference title in the PAC, and they're what, the 5th and 6th best teams in the Big 10 respectively? Maybe not even that high? Clemson and Oklahoma can practically sleepwalk their way to the playoffs.

I would think so. They're averaging more than a point a minute.

I wont do the whole count down thing..  I see the Buckeyes as coming in around 6th..  They may retain 5th, depending on how the media sees Okie.  I'm not to worried because there is going to be a lot of movement as the SEC teams knock one another off.  I think Clemson is vulnerable, and if they have one bad game..  Oh heck who am I kidding..  LOL

Jeaux was dominating but the line play for LSU on both sides of the ball, kept that game close.  But I haven’t seen a better case for a team being into the top 4.  Clemson is better defensively IMO,  Haven’t watched Alabama nor Georgia.  I’m not concerned that OSU is in the top 4 now.  Fields has some stats for sure, but he’s holding the ball a long time and being careful.  If he was under the duress Jeaux was last night, Im not sure he delivers the same kind of game, again, at this point.

Based on early impressions, historical program strength, actual quality wins, and perceived talent my top 10 are:  Clemson, LSU, Oklahoma, (Bama, Bucks, Dawgs) Wisconsin, (Florida, MD, UNC, TX)

Hard Times ahead UM, UCLA, WV, Florida St, Tennessee

No idea what to think about PSU, NE, MSU,

The soldier is my son.  The school I gone to didn’t teach much grammar.

Not sure it is totally fair to compare LSU and OSU on QBs at the moment. A veteran to a first year guy. We will see how Fields does soon enough.

HS
Blockandtackle's picture

I couldn’t care less about the polls right now. Just keep improving and keep winning. What I have learned after two games is that I really like this team and I think Ryan Day is a star in the making.

For those of you who watched the game last night I hope you realize you saw one of the greatest games by a QB...ever. I never got into the whole Joe vs. Dwayne argument and I hope people don’t feel the need to revisit it now, but my goodness did Joe play his ass off last night. Frankly, I never thought he had that much talent, as he was dropping dimes on every possible throw. It wasn’t quite Elway in the shoe in 1982, but from the second quarter on every decision and every throw was darn near perfect.

A joy which death alone can still.

ESPN will do all it can to get only ACC and SEC teams in the Playoff. Soon when the ACC has another team that doesn't suck, (Right now it's one team conference) then the Playoff will be 2 SEC and 2 ACC teams in. How does a 4 team that drubbed an opponent 42-0 go down in rank?

Clemson should be at the top but these polls are hard to justify at this point. Many teams have played a couple of FCS teams with a few exceptions. The others have played a few FBS teams of varying quality. LSU played in a big game. Good for them.

Clemson's issue is their conference is bad. They need to win out. The SEC, who knows. They have good teams at the top but the rest of the conference is bad. And they play each other, so that will largely work itself out, although a two loss SEC team is not out of it and a one loss is probably in. So two SEC teams in is possible.

Big Ten only has one top tier team, but a fair number of very good teams at the next level. Maybe a step back and then some bad teams. Not sure they get credit for that ever.
