HS

The good things about playing a team as talented as tOSU one can walk away and say hey we got it handed to us, but we are still alive.  We know what we have to work on and how we have to do it.  I respect Fickell for his honesty, and while he was here he was a great ambassador for the program.

Number one, win the rivalry game. And number two, win every game after that.

HS
USArmyBuckeye's picture

He still is through his actions, even if not currently a player or coach he will always represent OSU

HS
ballotboxco's picture

Mentally I don't think he was prepared for that. I think Day once again pulled the breaks after the first half.

Number one, win the rivalry game. And number two, win every game after that.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Is gashing a team in the run game without mercy “putting on the breaks”? There is more to putting an old fashioned ass whipping on an opponent than throwing deep 10 times a half. tOSU only had 4 possessions in the 2nd half.

HS
Extramedium's picture

They’re not going to take a knee on every snap.  The only real way to slow down the game and speed up the clock is to start running the ball.  The only issue is they couldn’t stop it any more effectively.

Fickell left a great legacy here. If Devier Posey doesn't drop that pass in the 4Q, we'd have 15 in a row against TTUN, and Fick would have been a Buckeye legend.

HS
Wyandot Buckeye Fan's picture

Let's say Devier doesn't drop that pass and Ohio St. beats scUM, 1 win against scUM doesn't mean Luke would be a Buckeye legend? It was already decided before the game that they were going to hire Urban. Luke was 6-7 how on earth does that qualify for a great legacy?

HS
Tulsinator's picture

That waste the year TTUN went to he Sugsr bowl and "shoelace" Robinson set the world on fire. Had we beaten them it would have kept them from the BCS and put the icing on the cake for an interim season where we lost a bunch of guys in the transition and beat Wisconsin as heavy underdogs.

Fick is a legend for what he did as player and assistant coach, but that would have been a heckuva finish to that mired season.

HS
JMeadows's picture

I don't know, maybe this is oversimplifying things but how about by being a great player, an outstanding defensive assistant and then coordinator for more than a decade and then a guy who had the thankless job of taking on a head coaching assignment for a team that was blindsided by the NCAA?  His legacy is sound and it is earned.

Never place a bet on anything that can talk.

HS
James Varney's picture

What are you guys talking about? First of all, that wasn´t on Posey in The Game, it was on Braxton. Posey had his guy beat for 6 on a great pass that at that point Braxton (wonderful Buckeye that he will always be) couldn´t make.

And Luke Fickell deserves nothing but praise and affection from the Ohio State football community. He will always be an Ohio State legend in our home. The day my first child and son was born, Fickell took it upon himself to go into the Wisconsin backfield, rip the ball out of some Badger´s hands, and take it to the house, clinching the Big 10 and a trip to the Rose Bowl for Ohio State. John ¨2-10-1 in The Game¨ Cooper blew it all the next Saturday, of course, but I´ll always love Fickell.

Beat Michigan!

HS
stxbuck's picture

Are you talking about Matt Finkes and Indiana to seal the Rose Bowl trip in 96? It wasn’t Fickell/Wisky.

Fickell will always have a great legacy at tOSU. He stepped up and took a thankless job for the 11’ season and endured a ton of grief from the fan base in doing so.

HS
3ydncloudofdust's picture

I’d tell Fick and his team they fought the good fight. Just don’t match up to the horses. But the EFFORT was there. No need to throw yourself on the sword.

HS
Buckeyejohn's picture

Have always loved his blunt manner. This being said, I worry his ceiling is Dantonio. Old Dino has had some success but offense has always been his downfall. Cincy was very predictable and vanilla on offense. I know their O-line isn’t great but I’m surprised we didn’t see any trick plays. The game plan of just trying to pound the rock was never going to work. Not against Hamilton and Togiai. Hope Fick is able to find a bright up and coming O-coordinator to supplement his natural defensive chops.

HS
Eddie27Zeke15's picture

Totally understand what you’re saying with regard to offense and whatnot.  That being said, Dantonio is not a bad ceiling.

He’s lifted a couple of programs up and has kept Sparty at a level at which it is undoubtedly punching above its weight.   I’m sure Fickell would love to come back to Ohio State and lead it to seven national championships but if he achieves what Dantonio has, that’s a heck of a career.

HS
Buckeye06's picture

If he’s dantonio at OSU he’s competing for national titles.  Talent is way better here

HS
DaiTheFlu's picture

This is an important distinction.

We can't stop here; this is bat country...

HS
Extramedium's picture

If we had Dantonio at OSU, we wouldn’t have the talent. It’s not automatic because of the logo.

although I think a lot of people would be perfectly happy going 7-4 every season as long as our entire team was made up of Ohio 3-stars who would have gone to play for Dantonio at MSU otherwise.

HS
Buckeyejohn's picture

I disagree. The defense would be national title worthy but the offense wouldn’t be getting guys like Fields or Ruckert. Dantonio has always been a Tressel ball guy and hired coordinators that think the same way. A great defense isn’t enough anymore. Clemson has proven that. You need a dynamic offense with a prolific passer under center.

HS

They played hard for the whole game and never gave up.  The game was close early but it’s really hard to hang with our NFL talent when it’s focused and executing at a high level.  I hope this doesn’t tank their season because they have good players and can have a great season.

So bittersweet.  I adore Fickell.  Mad respect for what he's done in Cinci.  Made respect for his D.  Loved seeing them fly around - fast, aggressive, and trying to the rip the ball out of OSU every play.  Vintage Fickell...missed that vibe since he left.

HS
BigBuckeye1976's picture

Coach Fick has nothing to be embarrassed about but he's a competitive spirit and it stings to lose to anyone. I really think Cincy will be fine. They handled UCLA in week 1 and that's a big-time accomplishment. Build off the week 1 win and the week 2 ass whipping and move forward. Fickell is too good to fail and he won't. I'll be routing for Cincy all season long as well. Go Bucks!!!

Why would you even go there? First, it’s objectively untrue (cough, Bollman or Davis). And second, he has done nothing but serve OSU well and turn Cincy’s Program around.  Fickell is a damn fine coach and Cincy is lucky to have him.

HS
Eddie27Zeke15's picture

If you are judging Fickell on wins and losses from his one season as the head coach, your statement might make more sense.  But even if you were judging him on that one season, I would disagree.  The way he represented our team and our university during that season is something for which I was and am grateful.

I’m not here to say that he is some kind of coaching legend but he certainly doesn’t deserve to be dumped into some reject bin.  Furthermore, he turned around a dumpster fire at Cincinnati.  Like him or not, that’s pretty impressive.

HS
JMeadows's picture

Haters have this overwhelming need to hate and if they can't take it out on this year's team in this game they'll go to any length to hate on someone from the past.  It's just the way it is with some people who like to think of themselves as sports fans; gotta fill that need to hate.

Never place a bet on anything that can talk.

UC has some really nice players - their QB handled the pressure well and completed a lot of nice throws despite the pressure. I was impressed with how well they stayed cool and hung in when they were obviously overmatched. Feel bad about all the injuries they had as well as the player who seized. Hard emotional game for them.

They won't see a better opponent this season. UCF would be their next hardest opposition. Learn from this game and move on Cincy. Their defense is good enough and their RB Warren is a beast. Wish you well Cincy and Coach Fick!!!

I thought this at first and don't get me wrong, OSU played very, very well. That being said, Cincinnati had a number of costly penalties and turnovers. Even if you attribute the turnovers to OSU's talent advantage, just cleaning up the penalties probably would have allowed them to get some points on the board and make it more of a game.

Much respect for Fickell. He will handle this loss well and turn it into a measuring stick and motivator for his team.

HS
andretolstoy's picture

When your offense can’t produce you put your defense in a tough position, especially when you’re playing an opponent that is 2-3 deep to your 1. Freeman, whom we seem to overlook had a homecoming too, was beyond frustrated.

Cincy’s Defense didn’t play half bad for most of the first half but with that fluke seizure event to one of their players and just being pounding they stood no chance.

I thought their offense would be a little more innovative especially since they were picking on Arnette a bit. They definitely could have/should have put some points on the board.

The great question for them is how do they respond? This could definitely be a game to grow from.

Fickell has some great recruits coming in so the future is bright. I don’t see him moving-on for another 3-4 years. He needs to scour the lower ranks for a new offensive mind and give him his shot at coordinating this team. It takes longer than 3 years to build-up a program and he has them moving in the right direction fast.

As for the Buckeyes, I’d say that right now we’re on the bottom end of a top 5-6 team. But the sky’s the limit if we can gel, stay undefeated, and then roll at the end like 2014.

Hats off to Joe Burrow. LSU is definitely top 3 in my book right now and maybe better than Clemson.

PS. A couple of you guys on this board are genuine trolls.

HS

I don't know many - I think Ohio State is a solid 4 right now bordering 3.

Heading into week 3, after getting to enjoy watching almost all the games today.  I can't believe I'm admitting it but:

1) LSU
2) Alabama

3-6 are all interchangeable.
Clemson - something is just off about them.
Ohio State - still learning but lethal.
 Georgia - defensive issues.
 Oklahoma - defensive issues.

Number one, win the rivalry game. And number two, win every game after that.

I'm not sold on Luke as a head coach he is a class act though but not sure head coach material. Before you beat me up on that let's see what happens in the next few years just my opinion. I think this match up should be every season and surprised how few times they have played each other. I think it would help us more on the recruiting in that part of the state and even help them get more Ohio talent that drifts off to other places like Kentucky and the 2 tun.

I have always been a Luke Fickell fan as a player, as coach, and as a human being. He stepped up as interim head coach knowing what a disaster it would be - he took a massive bullet for the university and I will always love him for that! It was incredible that Urban kept him on during his tenure so he has both a Tressel and Meyer mentor pedigree on his resume. I have never been a Cincy Bearcats fan until he became the head coach, and I think in short order, has change the program's mentality into a winning one! As Woody once said, "nothing cleanses the soul like getting the hell kicked out of you".  I'm sure Luke is experiencing that right now!

Cincinnati should never have left their hometown today. I though that the bears might be able to give you guys a gene. Coach Fickell and his players took a rather humiliating beatdown, with a heads up class.  So refreshing to see two opponents approach one another with a mutual respect, devoid of any trash talking, a rarity in this day and age.

This years defense is playing at a totally, different level than last years embarrassment.  Our young and mostly inexperienced OL is is dispelling those doubters, that enjoy badmouthing coach Stud, one was even referring to him as coach 'dud'.  Excellent job OL!!!  Good to see Dobbins looking like his freshman year and Master Teague III is an absolute beast with the ball.  He has it all, power, explosiveness, vision and speed.

After two games completed, one thing that is very apparent.  This years team is much more disciplined than last years penalty plagued squad, one of the most penalized teams in college football.  Credit Coach Day and his staff!

Cincinnati will be just fine, coach Fickell will not allow anyone to hang their heads over this one and have a great season, moving forward.  However, a suggestion to Fickell, you didn't take one 'in' the mouth, you took one 'on' the mouth.  One can be perceived as obscene, while the other is just good boxing terminology....lol

“Whether it’s a homecoming or not, it’s a shot in the gut, it’s a shot in the mouth,” Fickell said. “Whatever it is, in this game, you’re going to have them. And it just happened to be here where I actually went to school.”

Mad respect for Buckeye alum Luke Fickell. Despite the game face, I just had to suspect that he was an emotional washing machine inside leading up to and during the game Saturday.

Folks talking about Danyonio and coaching ceilings etc., etc.

First of all, Dantonio and MSU had our number there for a while. They came in without fear and smacked us. He did this with the Walrus. Imagine if he went for a actual OC worth his salt.

A guy on this thread mentioned that you can’t recruit on name recognition only. Well actually that’s 80% of what you recruit on. Ohio State sells itself. The other 20 is a combination of coach(es), facilities and NFL potential.

Luke has been able to turn Cincy around and get Ohio boys even though Cincy isn’t a big name or doesn’t have that name pull. This in itself is elite. Dantonio and Kelly were both able to do it.

The ceiling for all of these guys is how much they’re able to get outside of their ego. Kelly has had success at ND despite the fact that he seems like a real jerk. Dantonio, like his Jedi Master Jim Tressel, has been too stubborn to invest in an OC that may want a little control and will push you to get the elite QB, but will also take your team to another level. Had he done this MSU would most like be sitting with a natty right now. Maybe if Kelly worked on his perception that he’s morally debased and stopped acting like a madman on national TV, maybe he could more out of his teams. Aimless screaming has an adverse effect.

So, if Luke wants to be elite he can most certainly be elite if he gets out of his own way and does for his offense what he did for his Defense, get the innovative coordinator. It’s a shame he didn’t do so already because he has some offensive weapons. Ridder is a darn good QB, and his TE and RBs can hang with anyone.

Folks who say that Fickell will never be able to coach at Ohio State’s level are idiots.

If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.
