Justin Fields, J.K. Dobbins Hint At Ceiling of Backfield Combo In Ohio State's Blowout Victory Against Cincinnati

Glad to see JK having himself a day today. I felt like he was running with a lot of intensity and hunger last week and for the most part the holes just weren’t there.  Man o man were there some holes earlier today.

I was all over JK last week for missed assignments. He was gold today. The off tackle stuff was nasty. And the block he threw to spring Fields was Zeke-esque,

Fans used to complain about how this team wouldn't start fast or play a complete game. And the buckeyes did both between the first 2 games of the season.

Now what are the poor fans going to have left to complain about?

HS

Only two penalties, so hopefully it won't be that. How about, "Not forcing enough turnovers!" /s

I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.

The pass on 2nd and 1 1st quarter was a terrible call. A team loaded with talent beat a team that is top 25 like a drum.

HS

I'm gonna complain about our franchise QB running the ball. We have a good O-line, we have good RBs. Hand it off more. Run Play action more. Get rid of the ball quicker. Play faster. How about that for complaining?

HS
Dr. IlliBuckeye's picture

My only real complaint was the 4th and 1 play call. Fields doesn't quite having the running power of JT Barrett; he's more like Braxton Miller. Also, why not at least have JK in the backfield with him? Give it to JK or do a read option. And now that we go under center occasionally, why not just do a QB sneak?

..and it didn't feel like Cincy was bad - just the Bucks were pretty good.

HS
Eddie27Zeke15's picture

I was impressed with how their QB hung in there and took a pounding. The buckeyes created a couple of takeaways and scenarios which made it look like even more of a beatdown than it was.   And I don’t mean to imply that they didn’t deserve a nice, big victory. I believe Cincinnati is a pretty solid team so what our fellas did is impressive

HS
NorCal Buckeye's picture

I kind of felt bad for the guy - he and the TE put together some gritty drives only to see them fall through their hands at the goal line.

Minimal penalties, balanced attack, stingy D, patient gifted QB, a seemingly reeling Michigan team. Liking our trajectory right now.

They sure were. SLOBS had a day. Bearcats DLine is for real and they weren’t an issue today.

In the games played thus far this week, Fields has the second highest QBR of 93.6. On the Season, Fields QBR of 93.3 places him 8th among 128 D1 QBs. Shea Patterson had a QBR of 55 today, and has a Season QBR of 52.

Offensive line was stellar. Fields, Dobbins and receivers were perfectly balanced.

The defense looked like the old Woody Hayes defenses of the 1970's.

Coach Day; I don't know how you're doing this but please keep it up.

The interior line was great. Many of us here noted the line will be better at run blocking, and Dobbins will be better, not from the zone read.

And I’m all for Fields keeping it if he finds it good to go.

Off topic, anyone in here from the game thread? Why do you think your comments are important during a game? Why do you constantly bitch after every play? I read through about 30 consecutive comments about a 4th down play call. Bunch of pukes, crab fucking apple on you!

I didn't partake in the game thread but I can answer your question... They're passionate buckeye fans and when your passionate about something, emotions are bound to seep through. I know because I've been there and done that many times

I read a couple quarters worth after the game. It just seems weird to me. I can’t picture watching the game and commenting at the same time. It’s like the audience on the price is right. The negativity in the thread makes it seem as though football isn’t fun for them to watch. Maybe they’re just explaining the game to people who only have access to game threads. Like saying it’s sunny outside to those who don’t have windows.

It can be a release of frustration when something stupid happens.  It’s the same as yelling at your TV, but you have others expressing the same thing along with you.  If you don’t find it enjoyable, just don’t look at it.

"Why do you think your comments are important during a game?"

FWIW, I find the game immensely more enjoyable when I stay away from the interwebs. Anyhoo, how is your post any different aside from subject matter?

Despite the high cost of living, it still remains popular.

HS
IloveSaturdays's picture

my post is different because it’s mine. The world revolves around me.

I was pretty inebriated when I wrote my “get off my lawn” comments above. My phone needs a breathalyzer app, that won’t allow me on social media in that situation.

Calm down, old man, we'll get through this together.

Personally, I live in a foreign country with a wife and kids (and friends) who couldn't give a shit about the Buckeyes (or American football in general) and thus I watch the game alone.  I don't personally vent in the open thread; I much prefer the more positive aspect of it: reading and commenting after good stuff happens.    It's enjoyable, almost like watching the game with people that you "know".  That's mine, but I'm sure there's dozens of other good reasons people participate in the open thread that you haven't thought of.

A gentle reminder to BE NICE. Plays guitar and makes iced tea in the winter.

There’s just as much positivity as negativity in the thread.  It’s the same as talking about the game with someone in the room as it’s happening.

I understand that. My 10 year old grandson has his practice and games at 1 every saturday. My daughter is one of the coaches, and she is not happy with the time slot, but she has no choice. Since I live in Florida now, and she is in Columbus, I don't actually get faced with that dilema.

First off in Ohio we played games at 9am to avoid missing the Buckeyes, then you have to get the party watching the game. Problem solved. Let me guess some super mom wanted to have it at a trampoline park?

HS
stantmann's picture

That's the odd thing, they play in UA, that's as OSU as it gets. you would think they would work around it. I asked my daugher about it, the Commissioner (who's a man, not a soccer mom) has no choice because there are so many teams, and somebody has to play in that time slot. She says he ensures his team plays in the favorable time slots.

Watching on dvr is the only way to watch on TV!  Delay enough so you can fast forward through all the commercials and the inane talking heads at halftime.

Even if you want to watch more or less live, use the dvr to sink with Keels and Lachey.

This was just really enjoyable.   No team puts it all together every week which is why it’s so enjoyable when our team does.

I just read an SB Nation article which focused on learning from Fields’ five incompletions in the game.   It was basically saying that he was even impressive during most of those which the broadcast mentioned as well.  Pretty spoiled watching him play right now.

And obviously not just him. There was a lot of great stuff happening out there.

That was a good UC defense. And it Fields just performed surgery on it.

Fields is making great decisions, is more accurate than I expected. Doesn't seem rattled.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS
NorCal Buckeye's picture

I expected a more raw, up and down style from him at least through the first half of the season. Beyond impressed with how calm and mature he has been as a decision maker, as well as how accurate he's been with his arm. In some ways he's looking like a 2nd half 2018 Haskins that can hurt you with his legs.

He is really coming on and I am happy for him. We all saw what he can do after last year at Penn State - looking forward to a consistent season that blows him up into a nice draft pick. He needs Michael Thomas tutelage and drive this year.... Looks like it is coming together...
