Looked good. Myself, skeptical of the zone concept. Others will pick this apart. But great start.
Supposedly they have multiple packages and different covers. We'll see - I agree, but compared to what we had last year - I am starting to see an improvement.
Number one, win the rivalry game. And number two, win every game after that.
Not the biggest fan of the zone scheme either. We have 3 future pros in the secondary, we didn't last year... Hence why pressing didn't work
Buckeye fan in the heart of Badger territory.
The zone was great in this game, not sure what you were looking at. FAU really only started moving the ball on the backups. Fau had negative total yards at halftime before the backups starting playing.
There were some dropped passes by FAU to should have been easy catches against the first team defense. Zone coverage depends on pressure on the qb because there are places for receivers to sit in a zone if the qb has time to find them. Looked better than last year and there really was not much reason to dial in any blitz packages yesterday so they definitely did not show all their cards.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
There has to be a happy medium between Everett withers soft zone and Greg schiano press man.
For years we ran Tampa 2 and dominated but that doesn't work so well against read option.
High and tight boo boo
I'm not so skeptical of the zone - as long as it is mixed in with the press-man coverage we've had success with in the past. I think the main thing is to be more unpredictable as we play stronger opponents.
It's agreed - it looked like we were a bit heavy on the zone against the Owls, but the way our first team d-line was dominating while they were in, there was no reason not to play it safe.
We'll see how that mix goes as the season progresses -

Yes, mix it up, be unpredictable!

These guys must’ve never seen the Silver Bullets play. Night, meet day.
Cautiously optimistic about the performance on D today. Obviously not the most talented team we will play this year but with having to experience so many changes in the offseason I think our players have adjusted well and played with some good intensity and even swagger. At least they aren’t confused and giving up 40+ yard runs!
- Missed the second half, so can only comment on first half and what I've read.
- Thought Browning looked tough when he was on the field, we need that speed and athleticism he brings.
-Zone concept worked at times, have to wait and see for a final verdict.
-It's game 1, we'll be fine
I love hearing anyone's input...but when you say I didn't watch.... and why not watch the second half? I am sure had good reasons, just yanking your chain :)
I was visiting my aunt and uncle while on leave for Labor Day weekend, we had plans lol. Caught a few plays here and there
Couldn’t get a stop in the 4th quarter
Yup. Didn't include too much about that because I was focusing more so on the starting defense. But both Day and Hafley mentioned that unprompted in their post-game interviews. Definitely will be something they talk about as they review this game.
I was very pleased with the play of the defense. They looked fast and were running to the ball with bad intentions. Yes, it’s FAU but FAU had a solid offense last year and I expect they will have the same this year. We rotated players early and often. It wasn’t until the entire 2nd team D got in that we started looking porous. I hope they can keep it up because we will need the defense to keep us in some games until the offense gets fully up to speed. Nice first game all the way around!
Yeah that QB made some throws that were nothing to sneeze at. It was a tune up but I overall liked what I saw. Oh, and I want to see more Josh Proctor! He’s got that playmaking ability that has been missing since Hooker and Ward moved on.
yeah but the O line ...hope they get better our running game didn't look to good....
What game were you watching? JK almost hit 100 the team had almost 250 rushing yards in the game.
Did I watch a different game? Even without Fields 51 yard touchdown run they would have been at about 180 rushing
Successful people do what they have to, whether they feel like it or not
I don't have the stats, but I think JK might have nooged across 100.
I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.
He had 91. I looked it up because while there were a few lulls the running game looked fine. Or maybe I'm just crazy, both of these are probably true
Darn, I was trying to keep track in my mind and thought he had a couple good runs after he was at 91. Oh well.
The more important stat might be yards-per-carry. I believe JK had 4.2 YPC which is where he was last year. Hopefully that will improve as the season progresses and the offense is at its full potential.
Could not agree more
"Man I wish everyone stop saying I beat a kid in the hospital 91-35.... It was 98-35, had 91 with 1:26 left in the 4th"

91 yards is good. A 4.3 yard/carry average is not, particularly against a defense they should dominate.
4.3 yds per carry for Dobbins but don't think it was his fault. Kiffin said they were going to sell out to make sure Dobbins did not beat them. He was willing to take his chances with Fields as the unproven commodity.
Jesus, NoBlue. What game were you watching? The OL play today was light years better than the last two. They had a grand total of 3 penalties and zero bad snaps - 2 of the penalties were against the second unit. This was a VAST improvement and its only week one. Wft? Your comment sucks.
The only true worry we should have about this 2019 team is this:
Why is Sevyn Banks wearing number 12?
The linebackers were much improved.....and that made my Day.
The defense was very vanilla today and a lot of guys played, especially in the second half.
Room to improve more? Yes and I believe we will see it.
The defense looked great. My only complaint is several plays when tuf borland was in their during the live play it looks like he is just jogging around. I'm sorry but he still isnt fast, he is so slow
Glad to see multiple body’s to the ballcarrier for gang tackles.
I still think Browning would be a heck of a DE.
Two weeks ago, Shaun Wade actually said he’d be a great defensive end if he changed positions and just focused on that.
I believe an NFL team that runs a 3-4 defense is going to draft him and he will have an excellent 6-10 year career!
I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
He was allowed to roam in HS and played a lot of stand up end.. he's so fast and quick off the snap. Would be a nightmare with him and Young coming off the ends as part of a rushmen package...
I was thinking the EXACT same thing
Defense gave up 228 yards of total offense and 14 points. FAU will win some games and likely play in a bowl. Some of the things we saw on D this year we would have never seen last year including NO PI penalties. Did anyone see any DBs with their backs to the ball? Nope. D is fixed and will only get better. The 2014 D got better as the season went on, too.

I feel like there was one PI called against the Bucks that should have gone uncalled. Also, there were a couple guys not looking back at the ball, but overall, definite improvement.
The defensive backs had their backs to the ball on multiple occasions. They absolutely did not look for the ball.
I hate zone defense. I understand why teams use it, but I still hate it.
Hope they work out the kinks.

Baron Browning looked good. I just finished the first half. I was trying to follow at work, but was busy.
"You could feel the violence on the field. That's what we want."
That's the quote for me, I hope, for this season. It's a beautiful violent sport--I forget who said that, but that's talking the essence of the game. Cannot lose sight of it.
OSU gave up 21 points to FAU, and pretty much couldn't stop them in the second half, that's horrible. Sure OSU gave up only 228 yards, but they gave up 228+ yards in only one half of a ballgame. Oklahoma jumped on these guys last year, and in the 3rd qtr, it was 56-0, before they brought the subs in. The longer the game went on, the worse the Buckeyes looked on defense. It's like Greg Schiano never left, and Davis moved to the secondary. Please, not a repeat of 2013's defensive play. They had no answer to FAU's adjustments. I miss Ash now more than ever. Urban was limited in the secondary in 2013, Day on the otherhand has some serious talent. I hope Day gets this straightened out quickly.
"When you're part of a team, you stand up for your teammates. Your loyalty is to them. You protect them through good and bad, because they'd do the same for you." Yogi Berra
It was against 2nd and 3rd stringers playing their first game in a new scheme. Put it into perspective man. Fau isn't a bad offense, they were top 15 in FBS last year.
Please stop commenting. The third string was in halfway through the third quarter. They had negative yards at halftime, and less then 50 before the sub's came in.
Its like some commenters have never played football before and want to sound smart by throwing out stats.
Good lord some of you guys are an embarrassment to buckeye fans
That is my opinion, and you don't have to like it, but you should be respectuful. Also, please don't make stuff up. 3rd string wasn't in halfway through the 3rd qtr, they never got in at all. Maybe a few second stringers, but not a mass substitution. Be honest and respectful, that's all we ask on 11W, especially us who have been here since the beginning. Now as far as good offense, they played 1 power 5 team last year, and as I said previously, it was 56-0 in the 3rd before OU called off the fogs. Facts: FAU scored 7 points against Marshall, and 13 against Louisiana Tech. Not a good offense at all.
I was being respectful. I could have called you a moron.
The first string defense gave up 3 points on a turnover, and less then 50 yards. You clearly don't know what youre talking about.
How about give the defense some respect they played like men today, the second and third team defense gave up the two touchdowns
Hard to respect such a shitty opinion
I've been around here a while so I guess I'll just say, your original comment is crap. The defense did really well and as stated, in the article you just read I assume since you are a veteran, they placed second string throughout the defense in 3rd qtr and they played poorly. Not a good sign from a reserves standpoint but first team was lights out. Also, in college football, last year's stats mean bupkis.

Okudah is first team, right?
TD run was over him when he didn't fill in. 4thQ I think. I know I was surprised he was still in when I saw the replay
Bro, what? What game were you watching? You're talking about the second team D with a few starters sprinkled in here and there. Plus it was garbage time. There is always fans that want to find doom and gloom out of great performances.
I just call it like I see it. Fields, he's young, game was a little fast for him. He didn't look downfield when he was pressured, and he may have been a little overconfident early. Overall, a great 1st game tuneup for him.
Offensive Line, looks great at times, good protection at at times. They are obviously going to be a very strong unit. I loved the Petit-Frer got some playing time towards the end. I hope it wasn't because Bowen was hurt.
Running backs, great solid running. Nothing but good here, other than the fumble.
Linebackers were being given crap by some 11w'ers, but I thought they were in poper position, and I don't remember a single missed tackle.
Secondary, played great, really great. Anything close to them, they knocked down. Play calling left a lot to be desired. FAU made adjustments, and OSU never countered with anything that worked, all the way to the end.
Receivers caught everything except for the Hill drop, and ran good routes, from what I saw on TV. They could not have played better considering the young qb.
Like I said, I call it as I see it. Just because I point out something that I see, does not mean I am "crap", or have a "shitty opinion", or a "moron" nor should I be told to "stop commenting". All those go against policy and should be downvoted, but I only downvote trolls, even if some 11W'ers deserve it at times. See you guys around the blog...
Just because you ‘call it as you see it’ doesn’t mean that we have to validate your opinion.
“I’m so tired of flexing.”
Thank you for that Buck. Just like you, I am not looking for validation. just stating my opinion. The defensive play calling and lack of positive adjustments, leaves me a little concerned. It is not the players, in fact, I will never call out a player because he is not good enough, they are just kids.
Being respectful to all members is what I strive for, we're all on the same team.
I have a belief that your concerns about adjustments are spot on yet out of context. I have watched the defensive backfields coached by Hafley and they were excellent and on more than one season dominant in the NFL. I am of the belief that he wanted to see on film what a talented offensive coach would do to attack his defense and put many second string in to not take away the confidence of the 1st team while getting the results of Lane Kiffin's scheme on film.
They stayed in their base packages Regardless of the down and distance, Mattison is an historically aggressive D-Line coach who teaches fundamentals and turns whole units around from their previous seasons. He to would have adjusted IF they wanted to. As previously stated "I know you guys hate to hear this but this game is more about us and just getting our guys on film so we can look at it." Jeff Hafley
We will see adjustments to the formations we are playing, we were just watching the formations and how thy play out against a team.
I promise you that I HATE soft zone coverage and we will not see it exclusively, regarding the Oklahoma game, you should look at the OU offensive stat line again from their first 9 possessions, our OFFENSE became stagnant and our DEFENSE in the first half just continued to control the game REGARDLESS of our lack of offensive production! FAU had more of an opportunity in the first half yet could do nothing with those stops their defense was getting throughout the second quarter.
Trebor: Yes, I like to find the good in all Buckeye play calls, or players. I didn't see where Hafley stated that, I haven't had a lot of time to read up, but thanks for that.
I hope you are right about the OL. After the first quarter they didn’t pass or run block very well. The running backs were very solid but 4.3 YPC isn’t too great. That is a lot on the OL not playing well yet. Hopefully they will gel into a solid unit as the year progresses. Still not totally sold on Borland or Werner but we will have to see as the season unfolds. Overall I think things went well and next week will go a long way in showing how far along we are as a team.
I just call it like I see it.
No disrespect, but you're calling a first game--against fau. I'm sure you've seen many first games by Buckeye teams that fueled far less optimism yet they went on to have huge seasons--or teams that pounded their first opponent but tripped more than once later on. I've seen Buckeye teams coached by five different HCs, lots and lots of talent. I wait for at least two consecutive points before I start some measure of worry--the defense behind the line was revamped off-season by n-e-w staff and I'm willing to give the staff time to improve their in-game quick-change adjustments. And not an excuse, I'm pretty sure the first two qtrs of this first game had something to do with the second half.
NickeI: I agree about teams turning it around. Most of us know the biggest jump in improvement is usually between the 1st and 2nd game. Cincinnati QB Ridder is second year starter and a very smart QB. Much along the lines of OSU traditional QB's. Play it safe, run when needed, squeeze the football in traffic, never throw interceptions, take what the defense gives you. Excited to see how the Buckeyes adjust for next week.
My guess is that, given the opponent and the results of the first couple of quarters or so, the staff thought mixing in some non-starters was priority--I think Day called it 'running deep.' My guess then is that some not small importance of running deep with the same 'packages' is to make things not so easy for opponents to anticipate what package has been dialed up. Their general strategy to run packages instead of asking pretty much the same players to run the whole range of defense really needs that 'run deep' execution, so I think that's where the priority is quite justified and why the staff appeared not to be much concerned with adjustments. I need to watch again, but I think that's where the staff's collective head was. This whole thing both sides is work in progress. I think there's most importantly a whole lot of motivation on the staff side to make this thing fly high.
I thought the defense looked great for a first game. I really only remember one missed tackle.
It seemed like FAU found success when they rolled their QB to the right and then threw to a crosser. We'll have to work on that but Okudah looked good in coverage.
Very very happy with this defense. I wasn’t afraid of 90+ yard plays busting off. I was enjoying watching them fly to the ball and making big hits. I think with some more games under their belts things can only get better. Should be fun to watch this team grow together!
Borland and Werner will get smoked all year.
Most have some great practices because they aren’t good
We don't have to take our clothes off to have a good time, no no
Borland doesn’t look any faster to me than last year. I think Werner can be good. That being said, I’d like to see the bullet with browning and Harrison being a staple package.
Pete Werner looks like a different person out there. Did you see him laying some big hugs out there?
Just a few things 1 I thought this was going to turn into a route after the 1st quarter then the Offence just went no where like they just stopped playing with any real passion. And 3 times the Zebra's blew calls they I saw 1 the safety for 1 then right after that the very next play FUA did not get the snap off. I was watching that clock and it zero just before they snapped the ball. Then the holding call that should have been a face mask and it was clearly a Face Mask. Other than that was a good win but they can not come and play like that next week against Cinn. Fickle will have his players ready for that game. Would like to see the Bucks come out the gate and never look back or have Cinny make a game of it...
Fields is special. Like the TE usage. I feel like Jk Dobbins forgot how to make cuts. The oline was dominant the first quarter. Also every time FAU scored the oline played pissed again.
Jashon Cornell is going to make the nfl if he plays this good all season. Harrison might kill someone on the field this year. Hafley has done wonders with Arnette all ready. Borland still slow. Werner looked better this year.
Lots of young players playing first time. This team can be great.
Good Start-Good game enjoyed Malik's hit later in the game in the middle of the field forcing the incompletion
Enjoying daily the 62-39 ttun beatdown.
Young only was credited with 1.5 sacks??? Thought it was at least 2.5
Yep, official count was 1.5
I found myself yelling at the T.V (ridiculous) just as I did during the Braxton years - it just used to be "Let go of the ball 5!"
Fields needs to hit his check down receiver earlier instead of looking around for another second or two before reluctantly doing so! When he does that our TE's are going to have ridiculous stats as it will add two -four receptions to their totals.
As soon as Kiffen saw they were playing zone they ate us up
Old fat man comment here... I LOVED what I saw out of this defensive while all the starters were on the field. Holy shit, I haven't seen that aggression and bad intentions for years! It reminded me of the 'see ball, kill person carrying ball' mentality we used to have. They were busting ass towards the ball and arriving with anger and attitude! FAU couldn't manage anything sustaining and were getting overwhelmed!
Now that the first game butterflies are history - let's get ready for the Fighting Luke Fickells - for they are coming in with chips on their shoulders and looking to plant the upset flag in the Shoe!
