A great first game! When he gets more comfortable he should make his reads a lot faster. Definitely slow today but that is to be expected at this point. Could not be more happy about his future.

Whoo this was a game of contradictions. Yes, obviously, some fantastic stuff out of Fields...but a lot to be not so excited about. I'm *hoping* that Day just eliminated the keep half of the option play and left Dobbins haning out to dry after that first quarter.

Fields took a big hit early in the game.  That was about the time of the transition you are describing.  Sort of a, "we can NOT let this guy get hurt!".

He’s extremely impressive. The receivers weren’t getting a lot of separation for him after the 1st quarter and the offensive line did him no favors, but he played about as well as one could want. He’ll work on getting rid of the ball or looking to guys on the crossers more as the season progresses, but I see all-American potential in him, for sure.

This is definitely where I parked my car.

HS
buckeye1964's picture

so it's all the receivers fault, huh?  i saw a qb who locked onto one receiver at the snap and never looked at anybody else. he better work on that real quick.

Did I say it was all the receivers fault...? I literally said Justin needs to look at his crossers more.

Fields took a long time deciding before throwing. He can't wait so long.

HS

I like that he didn’t force it too much. He’s obviously still getting acclimated and seeing things he hasn’t seen in practice but the potential is obviously there. Hope he remains calm next week against a defense that will test us. Our O line needs to play angry next week

HS

Great start. Time in the film room with coaches will benefit Fields this week.

HS

Excellent beginning for Fields. As coach said after the game, FAU played a lot of 5 cb sets and he didn’t force passes. By the end of the year he could have a movie made after him, Field of Dreams maybe. Or at least after this year and next. How sweet is that!

On another note, too bad Braxton didn’t stick with the Browns. Probably because of the trade for Taywan Taylor of the Titans. Full of receivers though.

Hey, do we have things to build on? Sure. I think we all knew and expected there’d be growing pains.  As far as JF....to solely just look at his game; he played pretty damn good. Couple bad decisions, but nothing that killed us. Couple dropped balls, the OLine had some issues. Jumping out to 28 so quick....just can’t have the letdown. But again, I thought he played great. You can’t deny what he is as a player. We’re all concerned when he takes it down and runs. But that’s who he is as a player.

Someone in the game thread just kept saying hes not Braxton, hes not Braxton. My response, yes Justin Fields isn't a wide receiver.

Had two very catchable deep throws dropped or he would have broke a yardage record in the 1st quarter. They need to tell him five head first that slide is dangerous and fAU took some cheap shots.

Amen. The zebras missed at least one, but maybe more.

JT Barrett looked pretty sorry against Army in '14, and even worse against VT.  Look how that season ended up.  You just never know.

He didn’t play a whole lot last year. Very good first start. He will grow. There was a lot of panicking in the game thread. All they need to do is get better each week and play their best game the last few games of the year.

HS
macdaddybuckeyesupreme's picture

Panic is an understatement, it was gross. People on those threads need to put down all of the alcohol, turn off the TV, and go outside.

I too need to quit looking at game threads. I literally asked if a poster was around in 2002 and said he couldn’t have been, if he was handwringing today, he had to be a mess that entire year.

The pass to Olave was a laser. Kid has NFL talent. Zero turnovers and 5 tds in his first start is pretty great. Oline lost their focus after the 4th Td.

He looked pretty damn good to me from 26A. Really only missed one open receiver, and made some good decisions to throw balls away. A couple of reads he could have made a fraction of a second faster. That first quarter was glorious.

HS
macdaddybuckeyesupreme's picture

I agree, the pass to kj hill on the hook route should have come out faster, and the second td pass to ruckert should have come out faster. Other then that he played well for a first start

HS
buckeyenut74's picture

Yeah he had a couple he would like to have back, but by reading some people’s postings, I guess short of going 24/24 for 350 yards and running 10 times for 200 yards; the defense holding them to -100 total yards, and winning 75-0, some wouldn’t be happy.

HS
macdaddybuckeyesupreme's picture

He made mistakes, of course. However, every time he did you could see him realizing he made mistake. He's young, but he looked good. Once he gets more comfortable and the oline gels some more this team is going to kick the crap out of people

I agree. My post WAS NOT pointed at you. I should have said that in my thread. Sorry.

HS
macdaddybuckeyesupreme's picture

I know it wasn't :) I agree some people want 800 yards of offense and 100 points.

I sent my dad a text after we got up 21 nothing, joking around saying were never going to hit 100 points if we are scoring as slowly as we were. I also said the defense was a disappointment as they only gave up -12 yards when it should have been -13

Looked really good for his first start in a new offense.  Didn't try to force things...protected the football and slid when necessary.  Smart kid

There were a few times he could have simply thrown it away but hopefully he'll develop a better feel for that.

HS
MaineStrength's picture

Unfortunately I didn't have the chance to watch the whole game and only saw the replays his the TD throws and the TD run.  All his TDs looked like very nice, catchable, accurate balls.  However, it appeared that the WR he threw to on each pass was his primary WR and he never had to look away from him or "read" the defense.  For anyone who watched the entire game how was he at going through progressions?  Did he have to look away from his first target at all and find someone else?

HS
buckeye1964's picture

true. and it's troublesome to me. he never checked to another receiver - and that is what he struggled with during the 2nd and 3rd quarters. he's got to learn to look at other receivers if his primary is covered.

danny

HS
BuckeyeTron's picture

In that first quarter, he didn't need to go through his progression as the receivers were wide open. Later in the game, if you watch a replay, you'll see him sit in the pocket and go through progressions before scrambling out. The OL disappeared in the 2nd quarter, so he was scrambling earlier than he wanted and had to improvise a few passes, but not on him. Honestly, he had no major flaws, just timing/read issues in the read option, but that is easy to fix. That OL needs to get their shit together though. They were amazing for 1 quarter....

Plus side is the defense looked pretty solid. I suspect they didn't adjust to FAU in the 2nd due to rotating backups in and not wanting to give too much away for future games. The coaches have said they'll run the scheme that best fits the opponent, so I'm not worried.

Go Buckeyes!

HS
mmp15f's picture

Here's his entire performance (not just highlights), if you wanna check it out.

BuckeyeTron's response to you is essentially how I'd sum it up. The only thing thing I would add, just in response to your comment about his TD passes, is that his last TD pass (2:42 of the 3rd Quarter) appeared to be to his 2nd read--it looked like the fullback in the flat was his first read. Aside from that, you're right to say his first three TD passes were his first reads.

HS
MaineStrength's picture

You're good, thanks pal!

So far I got through the first half of the video.  Just watching his head I didn't see it turn a lot.  Often his first WR was open, particularly on those early TD passes.  When his primary target was open he was very accurate.  When he faced blitzers in his face you saw more errant throws and incompletions.  I did see one checkdown to a back.  I'll be curious to see how he does when he faces better defenses that don't leave WRs as open, but those are high level skills.  He certainly seems to have the skills to effectively move the offense.  Maybe Cincy will give him the opportunity to show more.

Strength equipment is expensive & guarantees you nothing. A strong will is free & will give you everything you need.

HS
mmp15f's picture

I'd say that's a fair, accurate assessment.

I definitely think Cincy will test him more, and I'm sure there'll be more plays that force him to go through more progressions. Fickell and Freeman are great coaches, and I'm sure they'll have their defense well-prepared.

I think Fields, along with the new starters on the O-line, will really need to have all their pre-snap checks/calls down and be able to adjust. There were a few too many instances against FAU where we failed to pick up blitzes, but I do think Fields showed relatively good composure and decision-making abilities when he was faced with pressure overall.

After the early games, Fields' QBR of 92.8 trails only Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders with a QBR of 93.5. BTW, Trevor Lawrence has a first game QBR of 64.0.

I was in the Buckeye Facebook group and I ended up leaving. Its like are they really fans of this team. Fields is a young Qb and only been on campus 8 months. As he gains experience and knowledge of the personnel and playbook he will get the ball out faster. People seem can't understand that concept. I mean Fields have never started a college game. Played at Georgia packages but nothing meaningful. Its crazy that people expected this dude to have a perfect game. He'll be better than Barrett and below Haskins my opinion. Hell also be in Heisman contender this year and next. That my prediction. But its refreshing to see people here that know understand what the real deal is. OH

I think Justin is just going to be himself. I think he'll throw the ball slightly less accurately than Haskins, but better than Barrett or Miller. Running the ball, he'll probably have better yards per carry than Barrett, but not have the video game moves of Miller. The last thing is leadership. If Fields can show he can will the team to a tough win like the other three, he'll be in a class all by himself.

Wow - I didn't realize we had so many QB agents and NFL talent scouts as 11W members... good to know!

Me - I'm glad the Buckeyes took their eye off the ball after the 1st quarter... it will keep them humbled and give the coaches something to bust their ass about! Way to come out swinging and getting the big win for coach Day!  We saw the massive potential and lethal nature this offense can become while also reminding us - this is THE FIRST GAME!!!

I LOVED seeing our defensive players busting ass downhill toward the ball and arriving with malice and attitude! WOW it was fantastic to see that again!
