Beat some Bearcats.
There's no points for second place, gentlemen.
Luke Fickell is using the whole play for your brothers like Urban. He has the coaching, the system and the players. It will be no cake walk.
I don't think so man - I think they are going to get blown out.
Number one, win the rivalry game. And number two, win every game after that.
This isn't your father's Cincy team, they are legit good.

Yeees I requested this a few days ago! Didnt think youd take it to the next level! Awesome work lol
Hot takes incoming in 3...2...1...
To be fair, people saying "our defense looks bad" against OkSt were criticized for their "hot takes" turns out they were right.
Bryant is going to be cashing paychecks next year.
Never place a bet on anything that can talk.
When did we play OK state? What year was that?
Wow! 4 TDs in the 1st 4 drives of the 1st quarter!
Wow! Outscored by FAU the rest of the game!

McCall might have gotten banged up.
He was back in the game after that no-called late hit.
I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.
Such a BS no call. Then they called OPI on Olave after he simply stretched out his arm with little to no contact.
After that late hit, he never came back in.
I didn't record the game, so I can't check, but I'm sure he fielded at least one kick off later in the game.
He eventually came back to field kicks
1-0 with a chance to go 2-0.
Just posting and hoping my comment isn’t deleted.
I'm just so grateful for the return of Buckeye football. Learn from your mistakes, get better, and keep winning!
Absolutely... team looked good, of course there are adjustments to be made, but it’s only week 1... very excited for next week and to host cincy... should be a good test!!! GO BUCKS!!!
Bingo! A QB in his first game, a wickedly hot start, a new head coach, a new defensive scheme, and a 24-pt win. Sure, it could've been a bigger margin and there are things to fix. No kidding. We could also be Tennessee. I'm totally cool with it.

Good first win. Build on it and get ready for Cincy.
Keep the train a rollin’.
Zone is great against teams that are less talented, but a good qb and offense will eat us alive, like Purdue (2009) USC (2008), LSU (2007), Florida (2006), Michigan (2006) against the Heacock "Prevent" defense. This scares the crap out of me, this is college, not pro, and in general zone defenses aren't necessary for the power teams, they should be used only to mix things up. "Our players are better than yours, come at us" should be our mantra. Count me in as officially wary and cautious of the secondary defense now. Great linebacker playcalling, bad secondary play calling - Last year, great secondary calls, bad linebacker calls. I feel like it is 2007/2013 all over again. We never have two things that match.
"When you're part of a team, you stand up for your teammates. Your loyalty is to them. You protect them through good and bad, because they'd do the same for you." Yogi Berra
It's the first game of a new scheme. They'll get better at playing zone. All these defenders have ever known is man coverage. It's important to put things in perspective.
Perhaps they played a different script against FAU so as not to tip their hand against Cincy. I'm thinking they left a lot of hocus pocus still in the bag for next week.
They were playing man as well. I thought this was overstated during the broadcast.
I saw very little man, they lined up off the ball (which looks like matchup man) like in 2013 (remember Clemson game?), but then they fell back into zone. They were picked apart. As long as a good throwing opposing team is ok with dink and dunking the ball downfield, it can beat a zone. I watched the game on mute. If the announcers referred to it, I didn't hear it. Defense should be fine against the Bearcats though, not a passing team. Great linebacker play today.
urban lost to clemson as well......soo im guessing that was zone too right?
Ryan day the goat....and yes I pee on ttun all the time
Good solid win! Let’s learn from this, grow & clean up the mistakes. I’m satisfied with today’s outcome! The sky’s the limit
The mark of excellence, the test of greatness, is consistency
I’ll take it. Hard running, teachable moments, and a W.
Everybody needs to relax a little. People saying the quarterback sucks in the game thread need to stop drinking. The running game was fine, fau has a better defense then last year, those people should stop drinking also.
The only concern I saw was pete werner getting beat by tight ends again, and tuf borland jogging around during live plays
What about Browning and Mitchell getting absolutely abused on a pass play? That was worse than anything I saw from Borland and Werner today. I saw 2 horrible plays from Browning today. Dont forget these are the players that this fanbase was complaining should play over those 2.
You should ask your physician to prescribe you a Chill Pill, lol
This fanbase is getting so bad with the DV's that you receive them for criticizing anyone other than Werner and Borland. Holy hell.
I collected about 100 downvotes a couple days ago, in a thread, and I didn't need bactine or a bandaid to recover. Shit, who cares? it's all for fun, anyway.
Best statements on downvotes I've seen. This is a football blog. I'm not losing any sleep if people don't like what I say.
DV for the win? Lol
+1 JohnBlair for the Bactine reference. Do they still make that stuff?
I'd rather be a minute early than an hour early, 'cause I like to procrastinate.
+1 JohnBlair for the Bactine reference. Do they still make that stuff?
They sure do
On the 2 point conversion, Tuf was rushing the passer with his 5.5 speed and the QB still beat him backpedaling 20 yards and completed the pass. He's a liability.
22 yards on 33 carries, kind of tough to criticize linebacker play. I will watch it later this week and have a better idea, but overall, I saw a lot of good out of thew LB play.
I just don't think our LB's are as good as we are used to.
yikes! when someone starts saying stuff like " fau has a better defense then last year", i'm a little worried about our offense. what i saw from the buckeyes after the first quarter wasn't boosting my confidence. i'm glad we didn't schedule a top10 opponent for any OOC game this year.
Positives: Fields, D is better for sure, Okudah, Predator, Bullet Position
Negatives: OL (which made things harder for Dobbins and Fields), no pass rush outside Young
Concerns Going Forward: We will be in fight with UC if we do not improve on the OL

The OL take is just plain foolishness.
FAU was blitzing their whole roster after the early drives. No OL would hold up against that. Against good competition Fields will “keep” plenty more and keep the D honest.
Go grab some bourbon and enjoy the “W!”

Day just said in post comments that most of the game they only rushed three so what game are you watching?
OL needs to clean it up and gel is my only take away, I’m sure our defense which did look much improved did not show everything, Cincy is not a given next week!
fields played well, probably needs to go through reads quicker I think he actually saw some of those 1st qtr TDS a little later than he should have, he’ll improve too
"Captain, over here, I've found someth... AHHHH!!!!!!"
I was watching the actual game schematically.

FAU was blitzing their whole roster after the early drives
I guess, if you consider sending 3 guys "blitzing their whole roster"
Pass rush was fine with BB and Cornell along with Chase.
1st quarter was incredible, afterwards not so much. Looking forward to beating the Bearcats.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
It is said that the greatest improvement by a team is from game one to game two. Hopefully the errors made today are teachable moments for our players and the offensive line will play better as a unit for the next game against Cincinnati.
Some really good moments in a strong start. Some learning moments where the coaches will teach this week followed. Encouraging improvement in a few areas. A stronger opponent would have made us pay for our mistakes. It's a good win and we are healthy. Get ready for that stronger opponent mentioned above.
The optimist in me says that we would not have gone into naptime mode after the first quarter against a better opponent
My dad wasn't impressed with our defense on the day. We did lose the turnover battle only forcing one pick and no fumbles compared to out two fumbles.
I thought we did okay but seemed to relax up 28-0 which is not alright. Happy overall with the W and a dominant start.
Get dumped then
They had negative total yards at halftime. The defense is fine, lol

Good win, glad for the start of the season, but truthfully not sold on Dobbins
FAU sold out to stop him. Not only was it apparent it was announced.
The Ohio State University
University of Minnesota
He’s extremely quick, has great moves and looks stronger to me.. but until I see him finish a long run I’m kind of in the same camp.
Master Teague appears to hit the hole harder and faster. Not as much stutter stepping in the backfield. He is a powerful runner.
Just my non-coach opinion.
I'm not trying to win a popularity contest. I'm trying to win football games-- Woody Hayes
After the 1 game sample, it appeared as if Master Teague is more a round peg in round hole fit to the offense, while Dobbins is more an oval peg in a round hole fit.
Love that 3 TE under-center package. I hope we continue using that moving forward.
Yes! The engine was full steam ahead with that look! I’m hoping that Day was sorta trying different things and not wanting to reveal too many looks/plays against FAU and thus the reason we didn’t blow them out of the water :)
Good first game in the Day era.
The game plan definitely went “vanilla’ after the hot start. Stuck with a basic zone on D, kept Fields from running on O, and even brought in backups. All in all, I like that. Stay healthy and keep the full playbook close to vest until next week. The Bucks will need it. Plus, it keeps the team hungry this week.
Great start. Mediocre middle. Good finish. Excellent run defense. Only 22 yards on 33 carries! Insane. Just need to have consistency from the offensive line, and decisiveness from Fields.
Nearly 300 totals yards, 72% completion percentage, 5 total TDs and most importantly, zero turnovers for Mr. Fields. Not too shabby for his 1st career start. It's only going up from here. Go Bucks!
Justin Fields in his first game did something Fromm has never done.. account for 5 TDs and something Fromm has only done once in 29 starts.. throw 4 TDs.
Were the issues on defense a result of scheme or playing backups? It seems like Kiffin should have known we’d be a zone team. We have been announcing it for months. It seems like Chase Young was pulled early (which I agree with) and they started moving it better as well.
Playing backups. FAU only really moved the ball in the second half against our 2nd and 3rd stringers. It's new guys and a new scheme vs an underrated offensive team.
That and the poor offense in the middle quarters caused the defense to be on the field alot.
First game with a new coaching staff and a new QB. More consistency would be nice, but I'm not gonna complain to much. I am really excited about some of the new looks with the QB under center and the zone defense and how that'll play out over the course of the season.
Go Bucks! Beat Cincinnati!
Exactly one penalty from the starting O line. Edit: zero bad snaps from 71. Thrilled!
On the flip side, 32 is still slow and 20 still has the instincts of a mop. Not thrilled.
Happy with the W.
I thought Josh Myers had a good game.
He sure did. That group has great potential and I couldn't be happier with zero false starts and only one holding penalty out off the starters. After our last RT I came to expect 3 or 4 penalties from that position alone. Heck, the send unit only had 2 penalties. It was a pleasure.
C+. Early 2nd quarter we failed to pick up some simple blitzes, Fields took some shots, and Day shut it down, in my opinion. Their defensive secondary was cheating big time and we would not go downfield on 1st or 2nd down. A lot to work on, but that’s not a bad thing. Stay grounded. Really solid test next week.
That PI call on Olave was an awful call
Especially after they failed to call that blatant late hit on McCall. Like what the eff was that? Couldn’t we get a make-up call after that? There was a questionable late hit on Fields when he tried slide and the dude hit him anyway.
My only real concern is run blocking...looked like last year all over again. We will be fine everywhere else but this need fixed ASAP. Here is looking at you coach Stud
I drink bum juice like you for breakfast.
Their whole secondary was coming downhill on us. After Fields took a few shots Day stopped going downfield on early downs.
If anything this game showed how high our ceiling can be on both sides of the ball. We came out hot but it looks like we didn’t have the endurance to play a full four quarters. Our O line’s inexperience really showed. All in all we have some work to do! Will be interesting to see how we do against our first real test next week! I’m cautiously optimistic, but we have a lot to do to turn into a championship contender.
“It is not death therefore that is burdensome, but the fear of death.”
Agreed - I do feel for sure now that this team has the talent to be a championship contender.
Subdued rest of the game?.....lol....they got beat in the 2nd half 18-17.....If they played Clemson or Alabama, even now, that game would be ugly.....lots to work on......that play calling stunk it up in the last 24 minutes of the 1st half....
Saban on a cart eating cold pizza
Horrid take. FAU isnt Clemson or Alabama and there is no way on earth that OSU would have been that flat after Q1 if you're playing someone like that
You WIN with people.
To be fair if we played Clemson or Bama, I dont think we’d have gone so conservative on O or brought in backups on D after the first quarter
This always the dumbest argument.
To a genius, like yourself, of course it would be.....
Offense - B - Thought Fields was great today, has all the talent in the world and is farther along throwing the ball than I assumed he was. Should become more decisive as he gains experience. Running game is a concern, not sure wether it was the line, Dobbins not performing, or the defense stacking the box & completely ignoring Fields on the read option but there's plenty to clean up.
Defense - C+ - I think we're clearly above where we were last year and Chase Young & Okudah are everything they've been hyped up to be. Kiffin attacked the Zone well in the second half and going forward I think we're going to have to mix in some man to keep the Offenses honest. Borland, Werner and Wint aren't starting caliber though. Hopefully the staff realizes sooner rather than later.
Special Teams - A - Nice 46 yarder from Haubiel and McCall showed something on returns that we haven't had in a while. Coverage was good as well.
Overall, I think this team has a national championship level they can get to. Just going to take a lot of growth this year to get there.
FAU only had 228 yards and most of that was against back ups. I'd make the defense a B+. They could not do anything against OSU when the starters were out there actually trying.
I remember being flabbergasted that they kept plugging in Wint last year. Granted the scheme didn’t do him any favors, but omg was he out of position ALL THE TIME.
If our defense averaged allowing 228 yds a game, they would have easily had the best defense in the nation last year statistically. Also FAU's offense was top 15 in yards per game last year (478 ypg).
Plus, keep in mind most or nearly all the yardage gained was in the 2nd half against our 2nd team and I have to think you'd at least start at B+ range for grade .
Obviously, this proves nothing about the quality of our D this season and there may be cause for concern based on future games, but for this one game, a high grade was definitely earned.
Not to over react, just saying o line should protect better when facing Cincinnati next week. Fields can’t afford to run as much and get hit and injured . We have got to be smarter and RB’s need to show up!!!
I could see us getting better every down. They are learning to play with one another, then the second and third strings rotating in. Most teams you hang 28 on them like we did - they aren't getting back up. I also think we throttled the play book some and started honing in on fundamentals. I'm not giving out grades, but I believe the future is very bright.
I hold my breath whenever he takes off to run, but if he doesn’t use his legs regularly we might as well not have such an athletic quarterback. It’s a bit of a catch 22 unfortunately
Fields is a great runner for sure. He's struggling in the passing game. He's a great thrower when WR is wide open. He's struggling to throw into tight spaces. Looks like if a WR isn't wide open, he gets indecisive, hesitant, and tends to get happy feet. Has a ton of work to do in the passing game.
Give it time, Grasshopper.
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
Of course he has a lot to work on. That was his first collegiate start and only significant playing time at this level. What exactly did you expect? He will improve as the season unfolds.
Yeah, we definitely should’ve played Hoak or Chugs instead tbh.
Justin Fields went 18/25 for 234 yards, 4 TD's, 0 turnovers, 12 carries for 61 yards (That also includes a knee to end the first half)
That is fantastic for a first time starting QB. Does he have things to work on? Absolutely. Did he struggle? Absolutely not.
ROLFMAO what the heck are you watching?! Dude completed 72% of his passes with 0 Picks and 4 passing TD's
His back foot gets a little happy, but as good as he is as a runner, I’d rather he take off than make a mistake or eat the ball. Give it time. No complaints on him today.
I'm not going to criticize Fields. It was a solid 1st game. But I'd say that we still have no idea how good of a thrower he is. The 1st quarter TDs were so absurdly open that I think I could have made those throws. How will he react under pressure when he needs to make throws into tight coverage? That is the unanswered question.
The 2nd TD to the TE he had a blitzed right in his face. I’m pretty sure I would have sailed that one high in that situation, he threw it perfectly and soft enough for an easy catch.
Every ball I saw was on target. Even the ones he threw away.
Winning 45-21 after going conservative of O and getting reserves some playing time.
Good win without showing all your cards.
Someday I'll live to see a Buckeye team play 4 quarters. That day was not today.
59-0 over wisky??
Fair. The fact that we have to go back to 2014 doesn't make me feel great though.
You've missed a lot of Buckeye games the past 4 years then.
Did you watch any of the games last season? We had to play 4 quarters a lot more than we thought we would.
That isn't exactly what I meant. We always seem to take a quarter off, whether we're winning or not. We did it against Washington & Northwestern, against M!ch!g@n I'm sure you remember the 2 fumbles in 6 seconds... We even took a quarter off against Tulane. It's frustrating to see these guys flash their potential one minute and then lose focus the next against overmatched opponents.
Keep your TV on for the whole game and you will
Do the same and you'll see we took the second quarter off and got outscored in the second half.
Can't win every game 70-0 like we'd like. Just enjoy the win.
It seemed to me it was Ryan Day who let up on the throttle and went basics for at least two reason: Fields health and playing with the pieces to see what he's got.
Not to mention Alabama and Oregon...
Thought the D played well overall, Fau was handed some great field position for field goals, touchdown against the 2’s. I’m a happy camper, looking forward to seeing this team improve! Very high ceiling!
Fields was fine. But Days play calling was terrible today. Doesn’t seem he hasn’t the skills to manage a game outside of the scripted plays to start. Really felt the absents of Urban today. Hope it gets better but still looks like a 4-5 loss team. Starting with next week against UC. They are a better team as of week 1.
Did you watch uc vs ucla?? Not very impressed w the bearcats
Did you watch us today outside of the first 5 minutes. That was down right awful! This team has 2011 written all over it.
The offense went vanilla on purpose after the 28-0 start. Can't show future opponents everything in our playbook.
2011? Lol. Great take homie...
What the heck are you talking about... You apparently DID NOT watch the game UC rolled up 417 yards offense. UC QB completed almost 70% of his passes. Im not very impressed with your take!!!
UCLA was terrible on defense last year. Ranked in the 100's. That is worse than Ohio State and FAU were on defense last year (and OSU had an extra 2 games over UCLA to boot)
UCLA may win 5 games this year.
Ritter is a solid qb and played well, but overall uc seemed sloppy to my eyes (just like most college teams week 1 I suppose). I could very easily see us winning by three scores next weekend. Go bucks
They put up 45 points. First games are usually full of mistakes. Remember the Navy game in 2014? and the rest is history.
You know Day has been calling the plays for a couple seasons right? I know we all wanted a giant blowout but from what I can tell, we just shut it down after the huge lead and brought in defensive backups. It’s disappointing but I’m sure it was done for a reason.
My concern is with coverage on play action passes, especially on 3rd and long. No reason to get stuck with eyes in the backfield for too long. Cover first, then react. Also, attack screen passes. And we want to generate turnovers.
I also applaud FAU for running tempo. Good to face that element right out of the gate.
2nd half was brutal almost to the point that I couldn't watch it. Lots of mental mistakes and that's expected in the first game of the season. The o-line while it's inexperienced made me cringed as they struggled to open up holes. The defense was a lot better than last year's first game. But it doesn't get any easier with Cincinnati next week. Like Aaron Boone likes to say "Tighten this shit up"
FAU sold out to stop the run all game. I’m not sure why we didn’t take more advantage of that in the passing game after the first quarter, but it explains why we had trouble with run blocking
Yes, zone is not the do all as we learned from the TTUN defense last year. Play man to man some. Don’t let Madison ruin our strength... not just blaming those 2 new coaches but they need to earn their influence. Please change it back to man to man or zone as needed.
I liked what I saw. Fields will get better every game.
Also, I noticed fewer penalties today with the starters in.
A pretty mediocre first game that should give both optimists and pessimists plenty to talk about. My feeling is that I learned nothing significant about the Buckeyes today which itself is a bit disappointing. Think next week against the Bearcats will give us a much better feel for what our football team is made of this year.
I would be disappointed too if I couldn’t learn. I saw a quarterback who can absolutely take a game over when the time comes. I saw the rebirth of the bullets and a potential all big ten year for Ruckert. Master Teague will pass dmc, and even challenge jk. Proctor may be too good to keep off the field.
For everything you mention, there is a counter-example. That is why I said it was hard to learn anything from this performance. It was a typical first game. The team needs to grow, and right now I don’t think any honest assessment can guess to what extent they will or will not grow. Bring on the Bearcats!
Teague was always falling forward. I'd roll with him over JK right now. I think he's the better Robin to Field's Batman.
And Ruckert...as I texted @BuckeyePastor:
Lol! You were texting your pastor?? I’m sure a man of the cloth has more important things to worry about than Buckeye Football............
Heh, he's my best friend since we were teenagers. And he's an occasional commenter here. :)
Hey, nothing wrong with a man of God being a Buckeye fan :)
Thought I saw Cooper on the sideline walking without any limp. CJ Saunders had left knee wrapped and was using a crutch.
Ryan gets his first win as HC.
First 8 mins were awesome., rest of the game was a different story..
Big 10 schedule is going to be tough. Good thing we get Wisconsin and MSU at home midseason.
Wisconsin looked good. That’s no gimme game this year.
I don't know how to feel about this one. Maybe I should channel my inner Fickell and say...Did we win? Did we win?
Nut on top
You should feel the opposite emotions of what you'd be feeling if Ohio State had lost, I assume.
Going to take a more consistent effort next week.
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
Plenty of coachable moments from today's game, but I'll always take the W. Let's hope Ryan Day makes the necessary adjustments and we spank Cincy next week. GO BUCKS.
Master Teague looked like a legit buckeye back.
He's a beast.
He's fun to watch
Big, fast, smooth, and humble.
I feel like day is trying to protect fields in the passing game. By not relying on it early on. To try and build up his confidence. I thought the d played great especially while the starters were on the field. Overall I think there are still areas for improvement but it not like it is all bad. One area I’d love to see improvement on is fields placement of screen passes. They were consistently behind the receivers.
Now Alabama fans have to be pulling their hair out as its 0-0 at the end of the first quarter against... DUKE
Oh, and since when do our receivers drop passes? Rb’s fumble? Let’s hope we are ready for next week...
My yearly reminder to avoid coming on 11W right after a game.
Yeah, that'll short-circuit their server.
Coach Day, go over Urban’s house and watch this film and get some advice!!!
Hey it looked better than that scare in Annapolis a few years ago...and we all know how that season turned out
We kicked ass against stunned deer in the headlights for 9-10min. After that we played even at best. A win is a win, but we didn't out-coach anyone or outplay anyone after the first 10min.
First game, so can't take too much from it, but both staff and team have miles to go. Hard to say until we see both FAU and OSU against other opponents.
That said, I expect UC to play us a lot tighter than we want.
Shades of the UB opener from 2013. Hopefully this season ends better than that one.
On another note, the refs were atrocious today. If the rest of the BIG crews are all like that, color me concerned.
Great win...going to get better every game and breaking in fields.. Our top 3 d ends opposite of the predator didn't play.. Some of these guys on here saying nothing but negative things must of never played football in high school or college.. The first week isn't the national championship game, I trust day and the process
Well Fields may be a better runner than Haskins and a better passer than JT, but he did didn’t look as good overall as either one today, at least not after FAU got past the shock and awe of playing in front of 100,000 and their coaches made some adjustments. He did show that with no pressure and a wide open target he could make a highlight play. What he needs to show is he can consistently hit receivers who aren’t wide open throwing from a collapsing pocket.
However, he was starting his first college game ever today and he is very likely going to get better with each game. I seem to recall watching Lawrence in a couple of his early starts last year and he struggled as well.
At least I know Chase Young is the real deal. Super impressed with his play today.
I saw somewhere that he was officially credited for 1.5 sacks. Seemed like 3 or 4 to me.
Day didn’t look too concerned to me. I’m erring on the side he played a skeleton play book after we went up by 28.
I really love the QB under the center again even for a handful of plays. It seems to help with run blocking and the RB going north and south.
I’m an Oline guy. Our linemen play straight up and then paddy cake with opposing ends instead of breaking down and sticking their face mask in their chests. I’m not sure why they have a hard time bending at the knee and waist. This was the case last year and it was frustrating.
Nothing personal, but our running game isn’t as solid since Hyde and Zeke. This may also have to do with our oline.
Overall I think we’re fine. Our Defense is solid. They were on the field most of the game after the 1st quarter. Kiffin was bound to make some plays happen.
I would have liked to see Gunner given some snaps mid 4th.
Relax and enjoy.
If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.
Looking on the bright side...apparently this is the year we start using the tight end more.
Really felt like we treated it as practice after going up four scores. Especially after FAU lost their best running back. I would have preferred they kept the intensity up but this was always just a scrimmage. Next week we should actually learn something about these guys.
You've got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.
Here's my take. It's a typical first game of the season. They started off strong and then became disinterested. I never felt like the Florida Atlantic was going to make it a game. When they scored, the Buckeyes answered back. Day was looking at the pieces he had. Some will say he did this on purpose. I also felt he kept Fields on a leash. Why put him in a position to fail or risk injury? The big test will be the Bearcats, but I'm not sure they're for real? Was UCLA just that bad? I mean they didn't blow them out. However, Fields doesn't have the luxury he had today. This team is a work in progress.
Overall take: About what I expected. The team showed flashes of dominance, but still plenty to work on.
-- Justin Fields' opener
-- The first quarter overall
-- Special teams
-- Jeremy Ruckert and the glorious return of the TE pass
-- No defensive penalties that I can remember
The pretty good:
-- First team defense
-- Not allowing embarrassing big plays, esp. against TEs, HBs or FBs
The better-get-that-fixed before Cincinnati and definitely before B1G play:
-- The OL becoming a turnstile for 2 quarters
-- Receivers not getting open and/or Justin Fields unwilling to throw in tight windows
-- Ball security, e.g. fumbles or not catching the ball
-- Grit. This team hasn't shown me that it can win a tie game slugging match ... yet
Our LB recruiting must have been crap if that's the best 3 we got in camp. Doesn't say much for Grant, Pope, Mitchell. Can't have a great defense without great LBs. One slow, another weak.
Does the fact Dobbins had 21 carries for less then 100 worry anyone else.
Not yet. FAU was completely selling out to stop Dobbins on the run. Other teams will do the same until Fields proves he's a legitimate dual threat. If he can do that, expect to see JK have more success on the ground.
1. Hard to know how many of the issues on offense in the final 50 minutes were the Buckeyes deliberately reining it in, and not wanting to expose Fields in the zone read, and how many were a result of complacency and an offensive line that still has a lot of work to do. But I suppose I was a little surprised that we weren't able to dictate to a lousy defense even after the playcalling fell into a run-run-pass rut.
2. The stretch running plays were just not working.
3. A key to any offensive line is whether they can keep the quarterback protected on obvious passing downs. That was a big problem today.
4. I was a little surprised to see a lot of sniping about Fields's play. He only threw 7 incomplete passes, and I'm certain that a majority of those were obvious throwaways or attempts made while he was being hit. He does have things to work on, particularly getting comfortable with trying to hit receivers who aren't wide open (and that's going to be more common this season than it was in 2018). But he was in high school two years ago. I think maybe Trevor Lawrence has given some people an unrealistic opinion of how quickly QBs usually develop.
5. I discount most of what happened on defense in the fourth quarter. They were substituting pretty freely.
6. It looked like Werner was pretty easily blocked on the FAU rushing touchdown, but I thought he had a pretty strong game overall. There was a lot to like about the linebacker play generally, though Mitchell didn't exactly make a case for more playing time.
7. How do you allow an opposing QB to complete a virtual Hail Mary on a 2-point conversion?
8. Long field goals have not been a big part of our games of late, so Haubeil's 46-yarder was an eye opener.
9. I'm not usually one of the people in here complaining about officiating, but the sequence that went: non-call on hit to McCall's head/cheap PI on Olave/Buckeyes fumble was annoying. The refusal to credit us with a safety made no sense, and no one really believes FAU could drop back to pass over 40 times and never once hold.
10. The DJ was a little too "present" in the second half. Not every moment of every sporting event needs to be filled with pumped-in noise.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
Concerned about the o-line like last year and defense with Werner isolated on a wr/te is the same look as last year.Looks like we got out coached with FAU making adjustments after the first quarter. The good news is no injuries and Justin will get better. We had better watch out for next week. The Bearcats will be sky high and with another sloppy performance like today we had today, we could be in for a struggle.
Last time we won an opener 45-21 was 2002. Just sayin...
Looked like 2018 Dobbins. Dobbins didn't even like that Dobbins. Where is 2017 Dobbins. Can't all be OL play. Stud was here in 2017. But I'd rather have Warriner. Should never have lost him to Minnesota and now he's at scum. I like McCall a lot. But blow on him and he becomes a game time decision. We never should have missed on Robinson and\or Knighton. Losing out on those two and this Dobbins makes me doubt Alford. Alford had nothing to do with El Guapo. And I thought Meyer recruited Zeke. I need to see more of Teague.
The Chug-anator is perfect in passing so far.
