Tuf Borland Feels “Night And Day” Difference in Health This Year After Playing Through Achilles Injury Last Year

And they say you can not coach speed, good to hear that Tuf improved his speed from last year , did he improve his speed enough ?????? time will tell

HS
Colin Hass-Hill's picture

That's really the answer we won't know until we see him against quality offense, but it's the answer that matters most. He's healthier, so that should lead to some level of improvement. Just how much better/faster/more agile? That, we don't know.

hnyg8modonwelfare's picture

Borland seems like a quality person and a leader, but if he was hindered that much by the injury, he still hurt his team.

We've seen this before.  Not a fan of that excuse.  If you’re injured maybe it’s better to sit it out.

That said we’ll see how it goes this year.  Wishing him a great year.

Thank you Urban Meyer and Gene Smith

HS

If that's the case, that's on the coaches not on Tuf. All he can do as a player is get as ready as he can and play as hard as he can. It's the coaches responsibility to put the best 11 on the field. If there's someone better at 100% than Tuf at 75%, they're the ones that have to put them out there.

But, but... I thought they said Speed kills.  Oh well.  We'll see soon enough.

As I’ve mentioned in other threads. I had an Achilles injury and it’s tough to come back from. I have a lot of respect for what he has went thorough. The injury is no joke.

His coaches love him, the players love him, the fans ....

I think the Silver Bullets shock everybody with their exceptional play this year.

HS
BrutusB's picture

This feels like the kind of PR you put out there because you know how the fans will react to him being named a starter in like two days.

HS
allinosu's picture

I doubt they are worried about a few assh..es.

HS
PsyBuck's picture

These are direct quotes from Borland himself. Really doubt the program told him to go out there and spew propaganda on himself for future cover.

What's more likely is that Borland was playing at 80% all year last year. Achilles injuries are no joke. Add to that a mind-blowingly terrible scheme from Schiano and company, and you get last year's result.

It's not like we don't have 2017 to look back on and realize Borland can be a steady and reliable defender.

Personally I'm excited at the prospect of a return to the 2017 Borland. And if Ryan Day plays the best players regardless of seniority then I'm even less worried.

Knowing Tuf, I'd believe him when he says he feels a difference between where he is this year compared to last year. He goes out of his way to avoid complimenting himself, talking about his accomplishments, etc. So for him to say it's "night and day," I think he means that.

Now, does it actually lead to an improvement? We'll see. But I do think he's healthier and feels better about where he is right now.

Buckeye_bob's picture

No one complained about his speed in his first year in his 16 tackles against Army, just shows how clueless most posters are on the message boards!

HS

Except we want Elite not steady and reliable.

Do you see Tuff Borland playing at Alabama or Clemson ?

I highly doubt they're worried about the PR for when they announce him the starter. He is either gonna play well in which case the PR won’t matter or he’s not gonna play well in which case the PR won’t matter.

HS

What motivation could they have for naming him the starter if he’s not qualified to be the starter?

HS

Oyyyyyy.  This low hanging pun is the only thing I dislike about the Day regime so far.  If he wins games I will be more than happy to ignore it but I wish his name was Smith or something.

To the many following comments stating this man should not be a captain, you should be ashamed. Doubt his playing ability all you want. Fair game. Don't discount the respect his teammates have for him. That's what makes him captain material. JMO

Tuf is obviously important to his teammates. I'm looking forward to the crow eating. Beanie wells had said he had this injury and was amazed Tuf could push off that foot at that early. I'm feeling good about the LBS with more stepping up and playing confident and playing faster.

HS
PsyBuck's picture

Looking forward to getting the old Borland back! You can't tell me this kid doesn't want to vindicate himself after this fan base crucified him repeatedly last season. Another full off-season to get healthy, a new coaching staff simplifying schemes, and a large chip on the shoulders of the LB unit, and I'm feeling very optimistic.

Can't be any worse than last year... Right?

HS
Hovenaut's picture

I'm hopeful that:

1) TF is 100%, and is ready to roll. He's a tough dude with an obviously high football acumen in a key position.

2) That if he is not, then the staff goes with another option (Mitchell, Browning) to keep a stable presence in the middle. Because this defense has to have it.

That all said, I think the #32 car leaves the lackluster moments of 2018 in the dust.

Got M...igan gossip? Bang it here.

HS
RunEddieRun1983's picture

This is the right answer. We hope he is healed up and has turned the corner, but if not, captain or no, the coaching staff has to have the stones to put him on the bench for a guy who can handle the duties

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

HS
Austezie's picture

I've always believed in Tuf, and the difference between his 17 film and 18 film is night and day. His decision making didnt change, but his ability to respond quickly did. That injury was a game-changer. His response to critique (the fanbase specifically) was perfect. Makes sense why the coaches and players respect him so much, esp for playing through an injury not being a full capacity. He could have reinjured himself but put the team above himself. How can you not like Tuf? Last year was nowhere near his fault outside of him being put in the best position to help the team.

The whole worlds a circus, don't you be the clown.

HS
AZ Buckeye13's picture

Putting the team above himself, perhaps he shouldn't have come back from his injury so soon. Not only did he risk a re-injury, he wasn't playing anywhere near 100%. Might have been better having Browning get some quality minutes/experience last year. Borland seems to be a very good LB so hopefully at 100% healthy he will rebound from the sub-par performance of last year. Looking forward to seeing the healthy version of Tuf this season.

HS
analyticalguy's picture

No matter when he came back, it was still a coaching decision to have him in games.

HS
BbBnD's picture

Coaching decision or not, if he wasn’t 100% healthy and that’s the reason his performance was substandard, it was incredibly selfish of him to tell the coaches he could play. His performance impacted games and often negatively. And we all know Bill Davis isn’t exactly a coaching savant so I think the blame is shared if Tuf didn’t make it clear he wasn’t 100%.

HS
BuckIhateTTUN's picture

While I can--slightly--understand your position about selflessness, that's just not how true competitors think and operate. Tuf would go full "Black Knight," lacking arms and legs, bleeding profusely, and still want in the game. That kind of competitive fire is why his teammates voted for him to lead them--twice. That's also why there are coaches and medical staff to make go/no-go decisions instead of the players themselves.

"You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least, you need a beer." - Frank Zappa

HS
BbBnD's picture

The coaches and medical staff can’t feel what the player feels and unless the player is legitimately disabled the staff has to rely on what the player tells them. If an injury is the reason he wasn’t able to get to ball carriers or cover, he was selfish to stay in and not let another player get experience, which could’ve helped later in the season. I accept that he may have been the best option at the start of the season, injury or not, but who knows how Browning or another player would’ve developed if they had those first team practice reps and game reps. When your competitive spirit harms the team, it’s a liability.

They can see that he’s clearly a step or two slower than he should be though, and pull him if they think they have a better option.

HS
Ryder's picture

Apparently even his "substandard" play was better than what was sitting on the bench so maybe it wasn't selfishness that kept him on the field but a desire to help his team win.

p.s might be why he also a Team Captain..... again.

Don’t forget Urban Meyer ,

He put JT Barrett out there 1 week after surgery in the B1G title game .

He watched Haskins lit up scum & still put JT out there .

Urban had alot to do with Tuff playing . He already compared him to JT .

HS
Steel City Buckeye's picture

Everybody that is critical of this kid should consider the fact that he beat out a bunch of 4 & 5 star talent on 1 leg. Playing full speed w/ 2 years of experience should result in an all Big 10 selection, that's my bold prediction for the season.

HS
awlinBrutus's picture

If he indeed was rehabbing and not able to work on strength & conditioning as much because of the injury, that would make perfect sense. He graded out well but if you are a 1/2 step slow in reacting that the difference in being in a good football stance to make a tackle versus being a half step late without the good stance=arm tackle. Which a quality BIG 10 back should run through, and we saw that time and time again last year. I don’t remember many long runs that we didn’t get at least a hand on the ball carrier in the backfield or close to the LOS. What did we miss, 30 tackles against Nebraska or was it Maryland? I remember one game we missed an absurd amount of tackles, not sure which game.

MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS

HS
tcm1968's picture

Seems like a GREAT kid... the key is going to be is he thinking quicker which gets him to the ball faster. He was clearly not fast enough to cover players in pass coverage the year prior to the injury ( watch the USC and Michigan games.,, not good) and got even slower last year trying to battle back like a warrior. Getting back to 2017 speed won't be enough. He's going to have to play faster than he did in the 2017/18 season and that can only come from reading and reacting to the play faster.... Here's hoping he can.. if he can't next man up..

Go Bucks!

HS

Same questions as last year. Different people are responsible if the answer proves to be No. I hope the guy is an All American. I am somewhat skeptical until a few good games are done.

A few things. His health. He’s 100% now. New coaches. Nothing kills talent or gets the most of some like coaching can. The Bullet. It sounds like he won’t be on the field while the Bullet is “engaged”.

And just like JT, his ass should have sat when he wasnt 100% and a detriment to the good of the team.  If he is ass again this year he needs to see the bench, he can captain all he wants from the sidelines.  After the coin flip, dude needs to ride pine.

HS

It’s up to the coaches.  He doesn’t get to decide if he plays or not.

HS

What most of us observed last season wasTB and PW failing to shed blocks, being in the wrong place, and not finishing tackels. The lasting image of TB lumbering after runners as they ran through the defense is indelibly etched into our memory banks. We were left wondering how these linebackers were not replaced by the likes of Browning or Mitchell and deduced the decision must be the fault of talent evaluation and inept thinking by the now departed coach. We expected the new linebacker and defensive coaches would analyze and dissect what happened to last year's once proud Silver Bullets and take the corrective action with fresh eyes. It appears the new coaches are enthralled with TB and PW and they will be the starters for the Buckeyes this season. We, the fans, must accept the decisions of the more knowledgeable evaluators of talent. Hoping for the retrn of the Silver Bullets. Go Bucks!

HS

It will take just one defensive series to reveals his true color.

To be a named a starter for last 2 years was still a mystery to me.

It has been more like 10 vs 11 on almost every down, a wasted position.

Agree with patches. If he's a true Captain, he doesn't put his individual accomplishments ahead of the Team. I think he did that last year. Let's hope the pre-season hype is warranted this year.

HS

All the “milk and cookies” are nice but the kid isn’t quick/athletic enough to be effective at this level.  It’s these kinds of athletes that separate us from the Clemson’s of the world.  Great to know he doesn’t take plays off and knows where to be. Just can’t catch people.

In Antoine Winfield I trust

The importance of fast LBs are becoming more and more evident in today's game as LB's are asked to cover TEs, WRs in addition to their normal gap filling duties.

I'm not saying Tuf need to run a 4.45 forty, but he needs to be one of the shiftier LB on the field if he is tasked to cover sideline to sideline.

HS
Frimmel's picture

Fully healthy with another season of experience bodes well.

I think the linebackers were very poorly served by the scheme especially after losing Bosa. The scheme was to get the DL upfield and not keep the LBs clean. And the LBs likely also had too much to diagnose as well. So step slow because of injury, too much thinking and not enough playing (a constant refrain from Coach Fickell after the departure of a certain secondary coach several years ago,) a scheme that makes it tough on the LBs already and you get a recipe for not looking like you should be there.

I'm confident he'll get the job done. I'll take Borland over having to convert a fullback.

You've got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

HS
gobucks1966's picture

To me it looked like Davis and Urban both played the favorite role in letting him start. Then again is our lb's that bad and he is the best of the lot. He says he is 100% now and all is well. Fine but did his back ups get any better? Seems like they haven't to the point of taking over the job. Lastly the coach's are not being honest and telling the true colors of our lb's I feel but then again they won't throw a player or position under the bus and give away weak spots on the team.

Denny

HS

Urbans job was not on the line and he never had to worry about that or he would of never ever made that call on 1st down in the Alabama game which was a huge blunder and almost cost us a NC the last time we had the ball.

Denny

HS
Trebor40's picture

Washington and Mattison's jobs clearly are as Day just canned their predecessors - I believe Harrison (Will), Browning (Mike), and Werner (Sam) will be our starters for the majority of the season yet Borland will play in every game he is healthy for and people will just have to overcome the need to say it is because he is Urban or Davis's favorite!
