Was hoping and have commented that this is the year the light goes on. So talented and athletic. Now that we have these guys playing downhill and not thinking, it could be the year. The guy could be an absolute monster if he puts it all together.

Browning is so athletic and explosive and fast. Would LOVE to see some sort of package where he lines up opposite Chase Young on obvious pass downs..  Would give teams fits how fast those two could meet at the QB..

Go Bucks!

I’d bring them from both from the same side with Browning on a blitz inside between the Guard and Tackle and Young on the edge. Good luck blocking that!

This refreshing to read based on the disappointment of last season. Glad that BB is being put into a position to succeed. Sounds like the defensive scheme and style is closer to the Fickell years again than under Schiano where the LBs are being allowed to be kept clean to make the plays

I really need this season to happen so I can let this thing I have with Schiano go.

Schiano sucked. You’re right. 2017 we were as follows nationally:

TDS -7

Red Zone Defense- 8

Rushing Defense- 6

Scoring Defense- 15

Sacks - 10

TFL - 8

Total Defense- 9

TO’s - 29

Should have fired his ass before last year!!

He produced the worst defense in school history. I don't care what he did in the past.

Comments like that makes our fan base look bad!

There is a valid point in here. Schiano showed he was capable of creating a stifling and effective defense. But the position coaching and (gasp) players on the field weren't capable of executing at a high enough level last year. There is something to be said for adapting your scheme to what is available.

I think Browning is the type of guy thats going to excel with NFL coaching.  Thats not to say he wont improve under Washington but come on Washington has to de-teach all the bad habits and coaching hes had the last two years.  BB will basically hit the NFL as a true sophomore.

Ugh!! We haven’t even played a game yet and the negativity begins

If not for a fair amount of criticism and honesty about what were seeing on Saturdays, I would have no reason to visit this site and read these comments.

Only so many vanilla “the future is bright in Columbus” comments I can read before I lose interest completely.

I really really really want to see Browning on the field a lot this season.

Mitchell too.

I've always been on the side of those who think Browning should be at one of the OLB spots. I'm glad he's looking good across the board but I'm with the author that it seems like a no brainer that Browning could be a terror at one of the outside spots and the fit in the middle has never seemed natural to me. Browning, Mitchell, Harrison feels like a big, athletic trio that could really disrupt offenses. I hope they get a shot to player together for some stretches early this season.

Can you imagine facing a 6’3” 248 pound outside linebacker with his speed?  Haven’t seen that since Ryan Damn Shazier.

Most of the time there will only be 2 LBs in the game with Mattison's plan to play White at the hybrid LB/S positiuon.

Which with Browning's experience at MLB, you could slide him over on passing downs. Take Mitchell off, slide White down, bring in Wade, and leave Fuller single high.

I think most of us have been waiting and hoping for Browning to break out. Awesome that he is stepping up!

Last year might have been the worst LB play in 30 years as Harrison was only acceptable at best.

Borland is even slower than Storm Klein and Werner is just not strong or physical enough to get off any blocks.  Fans keep blaming the coaches for a poor scheme which is partly true but players still have to possess speed, strength and quickness and the group last years has none of that.

Werner should be a Bullet, IMO.  He has good coverage skills but struggles up closer to the line as you said.

Ummmm no. He can’t cover WR’s

HS

He can cover TEs though. That seems to be his main positive strength.

He covered RBs and TEs most of time and did well.  He also saved 2 points in Michigan game covering a WR.  Go back and watch the games- do you you recall him getting beaten in coverage?   Coverage was huge issue on 2017 team.  He's the fastest LB on team (Griffith's comments on BTN point to that).  I think this year's schemes will put him around the box and allow him to use speed to fly to ball.

Thank goodness. Rather see a safety at MLB than last year. Slow and small MLB isn’t going to win vs top talent.

We don't have to take our clothes off to have a good time, no no

I just wish I could see more of the actual practices so I could comment more intelligently.  But from everything I've read and heard so far, our Mike is going to have even more responsibility in calling out assignments, etc., to our other defenders this season.

So, this decision isn't strictly about athletic ability.  That may be why Borland is still in the mix at MIke.  Apparently, he really knows his stuff -

Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement. - Will Rogers

HS
Dgeneral's picture

Knowing your stuff doesnt help much when you are being outrun by the opposing teams Olineman like in the Maryland game. Borland would never see the field at Bama or Clemson and thats the standard this program is trying to get to.

HS

That may be true - but its even worse if the MLB isn't communicating the assignments properly -

I believe that Browning, Mitchell and Pope will all play a lot at LB this year. Perhaps Gant as well.

What bothers me regarding “linebackers not named Harrison” is you don’t need to be the athlete of the Big Kat, Kwon, or Browning. Look at Rolle and Homan. Who didn’t they tackle?

Its great to read he is catching on. I’m concerned about interceptions thrown.

Looks like the D is going to keep us in games until the offense catches up. Offense sounds a little shaky at this point.

HS

Hope is finally able to play up to his potential and hype. I have a feeling that other then Harrison, there could be substantial rotation at this position, and when you consider how often the defense runs a nickle defense it could mean that only two LB's play significant snaps. As always, they need to get the best players on the field and it could be that BB is finally in that group.
