Leave one wolf alive....and the sheep are never safe
At last, the suspense is over.
Time to go to work.
Got M...igan gossip? Bang it here.
Ugh, exactly what I wanted to post.
If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special.

I think the decision was unofficially official long before today.

I don't know that the decision was already made, but I'm sure Fields was penciled in as the starter "unless he royally screws up over and over again". It's logical given that Hoak only joined in the fall and Chugunov isn't exactly Cardale Jones in the waiting.
But Fields will still be evaluated. I agree with Day only naming him the starter for game 1, instead of just saying "he's our guy for the season". There are still expectations to reach. I don't really think we'll really know what kind of leader Fields really is until we face some adversity. That could happen as early as the UC game, but it probably starts when playing at Nebraska.

Never really thought about it before, but I wonder if OSU has ever had three transfer QBs on their roster at the same time let alone in the 1, 2, 3 spot.

My favorite words in this whole article were "12 days until the Buckeye's season opener"!
If you have two people that agree on everything, that only means one of them is not thinking at all.
Yep, for some reason it finally feels like the season is near (at least for me).
Soooo, Potential is our starting QB. Hope he does very well.
He did excellent last year!
I'm sure your comment was a misprint--Justin Fields is your starting quarterback, your coach is a former starting quarterback, and the fun begins in only 12 days!!!

It is hilarious that the CFB world at-large thinks this was a legit, tightly contested QB-race and then double-downed on Fields being overrated.
Coach Day just said Hoak is only where Justin was at in Spring Ball bc he hasn’t had enough reps. Sounds to me like JF has been the starter ever since he stepped foot on campus.
None of that sounds like a ringing endorsement. I'm not trying to battle you on this one because i fully believe Justin is Uber talented but color me concerned he might just be an uber athletic kid playing QB who has trouble seeing the field. There's a reason he didn't play much at Georgia and it wasn't because the offense wasn't suited for him. He was a 1 read and run QB and he's been like that since Highschool. I sure hope Day can work with him and get him to where we saw Haskins last year but it could be rough sledding the first month.
My point of contention is that basing a criticism of Fields off speculation he was struggling to beat out Hoak, was a grasp to reaffirm an anti-tOSU bias. Their was never a QB-battle to begin w/, Hoak never even took a 1st-team rep.
As for being a 1-read and pull kid, I myself have stated that on the record. I’ll still take JF over Shea or pretty much any other QB in the country.
This is on the wide receivers then. If your Fields first read on each play, get open/s. Go Bucks
This is soooo uneducated and clearly didnt watch any thing or read anything on fields. Many people when Fields was coming up said he had some of the best reconition and board skills. Also if you watch his Georgia spring game or any of his plays from last year you can see he is pretty skilled at making more then 1 read and the correct read. Also the reason he did play is Jake Fromm took them from 1 game away. Go watch his highlights from Georgia and there spring game.
I did watch his game highlights. Almost all of them are literally 1 read and run. And that was against middling teams or 2nd stringers in a blowout.
Call me uneducated lol but board recognition skills and seeing it in live action are not the same thing. Sure he can see it on a whiteboard and i'm sure almost all of us could eventually figure it out with enough reps but if you can't translate that into running through progressions on the field itself it don't mean squat. TOSU will win a ton of games on his athletic ability alone but eventually teams will figure out how to scheme against him like TOSU vs Clemson 2016.
IF Day and Yuricic can get him to be more like Kyler i'd be ecstatic.
Serious question: does anyone have good intel/reporting on how Fields has actually performed through camps and practice season? I know a lot of us thought this suspense was a smokescreen, but is there a beat reporter out there with actual #takes on Fields?
I understand why Day would never do this, but I was kind of hoping he'd come out and announce that Chug had won the job. extol his virtues, and watch the media and fanbase flip out...then at the very end of the press conference go "nah, just messing with you, it's Justin."
I get that it's a joke, but that would be really disrespectful to Chris C. if he actually did that.
Well, Justin, don’t swing and miss...errr...don’t miss swinging at your haters. Something like that.
Go get yours, Justin!
Let’s do this.

I vastly prefer college football to the NFL. That being said, I kind of hate that there’s really nothing but speculation about college football teams until we see them on the field for their first game. Even though the NFL preseason is worthless, at least there are eyes on the teams at camp and whatnot. Getting excited about specialists wearing custom T-shirts isn’t doing it for me.
I’m not suggesting that anything needs to be changed. I just wish we actually had somebody who could see these quarterbacks throwing and tell us something. But if I was running a team, I wouldn’t want anyone to know anything at all. So, it just is what it is.
Every P5 school should have to schedule a real game around 8/15, against a regional FCS school. Gives these programs the cash flow they need to survive and let’s us expand to an 8-team playoff w/o lengthening the season.
Love this one!
No hugs for Chugs? Is QB2 a contest still or is it Gunny's?
Now that we got that out of the way, let's keep him healthy and win a bunch of games.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Congratulations to Justin Fields. Buckeye Nation, let's embrace him.
Thought Jarren Williams might win it ...
100% unrelated but, Tate M. Is going to try to be a slot receiver. Hmmm. He could have done that here. Ask Braxton.
Never would have seen the field here at that either. There is talent galore trying to get on field. Let alone an unproven
I hope he does great. Last year, DH was awesome, but he had been with the program for a couple years. However, Trevor Lawrence at Clemson was a true Freshman, and he did okay (sarcasm) but he didn't start the season as the starter. Nevertheless, I hope Fields is an amazing dual threat that takes the Buckeyes back to the CFP. Let's Go Buckeyes!

I'm getting increasing worried that Day's quote about Fields basically amount to we should be very worried he's not as good as advertised.
"I still don't think he's where he needs to be" is a worrying sign 2 weeks from the opener. I sure do wish Baldwin would have stuck around just in case Fields isn't ready for prime time.
R E L A X
It's just coach speak. Fields doesn't need to be where he's needed to be in August.
I'm getting worried this whole thing is Day CYAing because he thinks his QB is going to lose games by throwing pick-6s in Day's first season. So Day's subtly trying to tell the media that Fields is no Dwayne Haskins and to lower expectations for the season.
Well, he sure didn't give him a ringing endorsement, and that's a little troubling. But he's the coach and I'm sure he's got his reasons. I'm thinking Day might be one of those type of bosses who never gives you the highest mark in any category on your performance review. Depending on the person reviewed, it can be a good strategy. But I always hated that kind of crap, especially when I knew I was performing at a high level.
No one thought Dwayne Haskins was Dwayne Haskins at this time last year. Everything is gonna be okay.
Actually I knew it.
If anyone says they thought Haskins was going to break every big ten passing record in his first year as a starter you are lying.
Seriously I knew it.
Haskins release and size is prototypical pure passer and I will never forget Shawn Springs accolades on first seeing Haskins at a kids camp in NJ.
And to be honest, I’m just as high on Justin Fields, not only because of his physical gifts, but because Fields game is 100% geared to today’s college offenses.
I knew Haskins was from his highschool tape, that guy was a special talent.
this is all I needed to see from the year before to know Haskins was the next great Buckeye
I'm absolutely with BayArea on this one. I saw that throw to Austin Mack on 3rd and 13 and was like this kid is the TRUTH. Wish he would've stayed in the game. I know he had a rough spring but my God he looked so confident and assasin like in that moment.
Haskins was probably was not "where he needed to be" either at this time last year. I think Day knows that Fields has great potential but needs live reps to really get his feet wet and be "where he needs to be".
Day’s answers come off as coach-speak to me. Is he really going to decide the starter on a week-by-week basis? So if Fields is having a decent year, and has a bad week of practice b4 the PSU game, he’s going to plug in Chug??
The Justin Fields era has officially begun. I watched "QB1: Behind the Lights" strictly because he was on it, and I have to say I was impressed with him. He has that humble background, but definitely carries himself with a lot of confidence. Looks like he is a natural leader that knows when to have fun as well.

Surprise! Surprise! Surprise! - Gomer Pyle, USMC
Congratulations Mr. Fields. We knew you had it in you. Now go out there and show us what you can do.
On Espn - College Football Live, they're talking about Clemson being number 1 and who "could" challenge them. Very good things being said about the Buckeyes and their talented QB. Good comments about coach Day also.
I truly mean this. I expect ESPN to start saying a lot more positive things about Ohio State now that Meyer is no longer the coach. They were annoyed that he first left the SEC and second worked for them for less than a year before coming to Ohio State.
I expect that ESPN will continue to say that the Buckeyes are probably better than most teams and probably worse than Clemson and Alabama. And until the Buckeyes prove otherwise, that’s what they should say. ESPN would have said lovely things had our fellas beaten Iowa and Purdue. But they didn’t.
I certainly agree that the world as a whole - including the media - is going to have fewer negative feelings about Day than Meyer but those are just feelings. Most of those same analysts are being conservative about the Buckeyes until they see what things look like with Day, which is entirely fair.
I disagree that ESPN felt cheated about Meyer leaving them or an SEC school. He wasn’t some incredible ratings draw as an analyst.
The only worse kept secret in sports is that ESPN wants an SEC school to win the national championship.
Please get over this. It is the most basic expression of cfb fandom and comes from fans of every team. Fans of SEC teams are convinced the media prefers other conferences over the SEC. blah blah blah.
i have said it before: if it gets clicks, the media hates you... but they hate everyone else too.
He specifically said ESPN. No need to generalize.
Have you watched ESPN in recent years? It's a pretty blatant and favorable bias to the SEC because of the network's business relationship with the conference.
He said ESPN. Many people do. I generalize because other people accuse other outlets of the same thing. So yes, the generalization was intentional.
And I see you agree with the same nonsense he does. And you’ll have plenty of support in your corner because there are many within the Ohio State fan base who agree with you. It’s basic. We can choose to be better than this. But we don’t.
ESPN is pretty keen on Clemson right now too. Have you noticed that began when Clemson started being really good? Just like Alabama is really good? We expect ESPN to say Ohio State is better than these teams every year... but that’s not what sports media is for. And, I hate to admit it, but those teams have been better than ours in recent years.
First, I will be the first to say that the Buckeyes haven't deserved to make the playoffs the last few years. There has been no bias in keeping them out in my opinion.
Second, my comment was meant as "no sh*t" he's the starting quarterback in the same way that it's obvious ESPN likes the SEC because of the $$$$$$ they are making off them with there association with the SEC network.
Understood. And I agree that ESPN likes making money with the brand they carry. We are completely aligned there.
The part that I disagree with, and forgive me if you weren’t joining others and making this point, is that ESPN or other media outlets discredit programs from other conferences solely because they aren’t under their umbrella. If Ohio State was doing what Alabama has done for well over a decade or what Clemson has done the past few of years, they would be saying that.
Ohio State has been the best once in recent years. It was glorious. But some of our fans expect ESPN and every other media outlet to proclaim Ohio State the best every year and declare bias when it doesn’t happen. It’s just tiresome.
But it sounds like that’s not you... so I’m happy to hear it.
I agree with you on Ohio State fans always feeling like the Buckeyes are getting ragged on unfairly. To be honest, a lot of the negative heat they get, they bring on themselves with the way certain things are and have been handled.
I thought this could happen
