Skull Session: Gunnar Hoak is the Best Backup, Jim Harbaugh Claims Ohio State Game “Defines the Entire Season,” and Brenton Cox Dismissed at Georgia

This just in: Jim Harbaugh is an enormous goof and has no idea what in the hell he is talking about, ever.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

He can’t start saying that The Game is important and season-defining in year 5.   No one is going to believe him.

Enormous goof indeed.

Exactly, it's a little late in the game to make that declaration. Tool bag.

I listened to that entire interview (PMT is actually a decent podcast). Harbaugh explicitly claimed Michigan as co-Big Ten champions in 2018. Imagine how peaceful life must be with that kind of delusion.

"Because we couldn't go for three"

HS
Byaaaahhh's picture

Even claiming co-Big Ten East champions is wildly delusional, but to claim the entire Big Ten when you didn't even make it to the game...?

HS
tunehtraef's picture

I read that quote as appeasing the powers that be. Maybe I am reading into it too much, but he has never said The Game has defined a season before (to my knowledge- as a coach at least). Now he’s kind of changing his tune by saying it with the caveat that all of them are important too. Seems to me like some are getting restless up North and want their “savior” coach to start beating their rival... here’s to that not happening in the next seven years so we can tie up this damn overall record.

HS
DukeofWeimar's picture

I guess I'm OK with Harbaugh being around..but it does tick me off that the media seemingly gives him a pass for any of his teams' transgressions and he feels free to open his trap about UFM. Meyer has done 10 fold for the sport and mankind through philanthropy than Harbaugh has done.

HS
IGotAWoody's picture

Harbaugh is a nut case, no doubt about it, but it's actually NOT insane to use Excel to create documents. A lot of people do that, including myself. I use Word for most documents, but Excel works for certain things and is actually better because it gives you control over spacing and creating tables that can be more frustrating in Word.

Get dumped then, former Marquette players!

So, finally, we get the long awaited make-up game against Marquette going back to 2012 when the Carrier Classic was infamously cancelled due to condensation on the court. TBTers Aaron Craft, LaQuinton Ross and Evan Ravenel were all on that year’s team.

I love the Trabant link. I have always liked oddball cars and bikes, but I must say that is one I knew zero about until today. Kinda classic ride in a way. Cool stuff.

JimBaugh is somewhat entertaining, though more in the way of a car crash rather than Wile Coyote. Comparing the goofball to a cartoon character is a slap to the great WB cartoons of the past.

HS
Lighteyes's picture

I think it's the precisely because we've been so successful at stopping a lot of diseases.

Not to get preachy, but the parallel is the anti-vax movement:

I grew up in the 80s and not a single parent was against vaccination or bathing. You know why? Because all of those parents in the 80's (who themselves grew up in the 50s and 60s) had personal experience with polio, measles, and other diseases. Maybe you were lucky and didn't get it yourself, but you knew Uncle Johnny who could barely walk with a cane because of polio or a childhood friend down the street who almost died from measles or etc.  So the idea of not vaccinating wouldn't even cross their mind because they knew exactly how bad it could be. However, the vaccines were so effective in addressing the issue with my generation and younger that parents nowadays don't have any real understanding of just how dangerous these things can be...and that "fear gap" allows anti-vax or not-bathing or etc to take root.

Form the NES game link:

The copy sold over the weekend for $9000, and Amos already has some fun plans on how to spend the unexpected windfall.

“I have an older sister, too. We’re splitting (the proceeds) 50-50. We’re going to do a Disney World vacation next month”, he told the Journal. “Instead of doing something responsible, we’re going to have some fun with it.”

Considering it was a game that got them the money, it seems only fitting that they spend it doing something fun. They have a chance to make more memories than playing the game would’ve given them over 30 years ago.

Kenny G was an outstanding back up that is vastly under appreciated by many... He pulled the Buckeyes out of the fire in the Purdue game and went on to win games as the Buckeyes "starting QB"... when you start your no longer the back up , you're the man and when he was the man he got it done...

First game I ever attended at the Shoe was that comeback win against Purdue by Kenny G. Those I went with weren't as big of a fan of the Buckeyes as I was/am, but after the game I know for certain their allegiance to the Irish shifted to the Buckeyes a little bit.

I remember one time when I was a jv basketball player and we managed to beat the varsity pretty bad in a scrimmage. Varsity head coach kicked the varsity out of the gym. We were thrilled that we beat those guys. Then the coach made the jv run lines for what seemed like an hour but was probably no more than 15 minutes but it was enough to take the motivation out of beating those guys ever again.

I get them not wanting us to get big heads but come on, it was one scrimmage. Coaches do some really stupid things sometimes.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

HS
AZ Buckeye13's picture

Same thing happened to me, Philly. Loser of the JV/Varsity scrimmage had to run laps. I was a Senior starter along with my best friend. Head coach wanted to teach us a lesson so he put me and my friend on the JV squad for the scrimmage. Four quarters later we beat the Varsity by double digits. Coach wasn’t happy and told the Varsity to line up for 100 laps around the gymnasium. My buddy and I headed to the locker room with the JV team when coach yelled out “Where are you two going? You are Varsity players so start running.” Talk about shocked...ha ha.

I think that photo was pretty early in the day.  It only looks like one tower had been hit at that point.  There is a good chance most of those people didn't even know a plane hit the building at that point, just that there was a fire.  It's not like everyone was carrying around a smartphone in 2001.

This will not go over well as it does not denigrate ttun  like many would like to hear but the truth is the Buckeyes last two season have been defined by unexplained blowout losses to two teams they should not have lost in such fashion. We know doubt had good teams but those losses defined those seasons and painfully , thy're near unexplainable and cost us the playoffs basically defining those seasons.

Whether it would have been any better losing instead close games to ttun  both years we may have been able to get to the playoffs in at least one of those years with those types of loses, maybe both. We will never know but the probabilities are on our side if you think logically and rationally about it.

I guess what I'm saying here is that while losing certain games can define your season , it is the whole body of work that really does no matter what you want to make it sound like or try and make it feel like.  Ask yourself what would be worse losing to an 0-11 ttun or losing to an 11-0 ttun if your an 11-0 Buckeye team? I know which  One would be an absolute gut punch for me .

HS
AZ Buckeye13's picture

Don’t recall but wouldn’t we have lost the tiebreaker those years if we had lost to TTUN?

I felt that the reason we lost to Iowa was that we were totally “spent” after the PSU comeback. I wrote off the Purdue loss to us always struggling at Ross Ade stadium.

HS
Senepol's picture

If we win The Game, it’s a successful season in my eyes. If we lose The Game, it’s not. I remember the Cooper years, those were terrible, let’s not go back to that place. Couldn’t tell ya who else we beat or lost to in those years, only ttun.

Sure, not deucing the futon against Iowa or Purdue is nice and can help with things beyond The Game. But years after the end of the season, the only thing I remember is whether or not we won The Game.

With JH emphasis on the final regular game as defining the season, maybe he meant to say that it will define his college coaching career. Do ya think that in AA's athletic department that he has been given notice that this HAS to be the year: against a first year coach (with two traitor assistants), with a first year QB, with an untested offensive line, and playing at the Big House no less. Oh the pressure has to be immense!

I saw many of the same players you saw at least the Ohio kids. Selby was a nice back but slow a foot. EGW of McKinley never understood why they offered played mostly qb. Clark we may never know but I still say that was Tom Herman's call but Urban had to give the ok. He just never got any better and his foot work reminded me of Bernie Kosar. Don't feel bad I have watched hundreds of Ohio and Pa. kids and wondered why we never recruited them and in the end I saw why. For every good talent you watch there are a hundred better many times.

Regarding the reCAPTCHA article -- I know much of it was ranting and/or tongue in cheek (hopefully too many people didn't take it too seriously) -- bots submitting forms on websites is a huge problem.  Some of them are security scanning tools, some of them are random people with bots, some are truly malicious.  Regardless, preventing these from being included with the real information from legitimate form submissions is important.

Imagine your local power company has a form for reporting an outage.  You want people to be able to use it and the power company to act on it, yes?  You don't want bots flooding it with garbage requiring extra staff to sift through and sort out the noise.  Sometimes the garbage looks real, too depending on if it is AI generated (which is often the case with bots that are seeking to defeat Google's bot detection).

It's a tough problem but in some respects is a necessary evil.  That Google is using it to improve it's own AI systems, well, that's subject to debate.  What you don't see is the fact that rival AIs are actually fighting with reCAPTCHA as the battle ground.  Interesting and terrifying at the same time.
