Skull Session: Ohio State is Overrated, Urban Meyer Compliments Michigan's Offense, and Dre'Mont Jones Terrorizes in NFL Debut

Michigan having their best offense this year isnt exactly a shock or something unobtainable. They havent had a top 50 offense in the last decade, let alone under Harbaugh.

HS
IGotAWoody's picture

Yep, to say their offense is stuck in the 90s is an underestimate. I'd say more like the 60s or 70s.

Watched a little of the game last night, it was fun seeing Dremont doing Dremont things. He was unblockable for much of the evening.

Huh, interesting that people from Hawaii are just called "Hawaii resident." I've always called them Hawaiians. Is there something wrong with that that the US Gov't avoided using it?

HS

I'm thinking that this is a very old manual, where Hawaii was just added and they just couldn't come up with Hawaiian.

HS

Thanks for the legwork, Banzai. Looks like "Hawaiians" is used exclusively for those of native Hawaiian ancestry and "Hawaii Residents" is for everyone living in the state.

I think the big question is whether Harbaugh will allow the spread offense time to grow. He has never been one to change his ways or give up control. Most coaches are that way. A lot of guys would rather fail doing it their way than succeed doing it somebody elses way. Jim Harbaugh is definitely that kind of guy. So changing the offense may have sounded good in theory, but when the heat is on how is he going to react?

HS
BucksHave7's picture

1-9 vs top 10, not a talent problem  at TTUN.  He just isnt a big game coach.

BucksHave7

HS
huffdaddy's picture

Honestly, it may be a talent issue. Michigan has about the 10th best talent in the country based on rankings combined over the past 4-5 years, so in any game against the top 10, they probably are out-talented.

Which is why they can't compensate by just pounding the ball and throwing to the TE. They have to shake it up on O, they don't have the horses to just line up and smash it against the best of the best. They aren't Alabama.

HS
BucksHave7's picture

Doesnt Harbaugh look scared in games that matter?

BucksHave7

HS
osupax33's picture

Also, I don't see their skill position players, outside of Patterson, really fitting the mold of a spread team. Their receivers are mostly big, lanky , pro style guys. Also, still mediocre at best at running back. That O line will be good though.

Overrated, LOL. We finish top 5 pretty much every year. Was LSU on that list?  ND?

I’d love to see a data set of the last 10 years of preseason vs final ranking differential. That would factually show who is overrated in these polls every year. Remy?

HS
BrutusB's picture

Here you go (from two years ago, but covers twenty years of data.) It’s who you would have guessed: Notre Dame, Florida State, Texas.

To help prove his point, should be noted he called out FSU for being ranked at 3 that preseason - they would proceed to go 7-6 and finish the season unranked.

HS
Knarcisi's picture

Thank you. I figured it would have been a subject. I actually don’t care for the way he did it as % of time they over or underperformed. Team ranked 5 and finish 6, that’s a negative figure.  It also penalizes teams that are consistently good and get a top ~3 rank to live up to.  Look at Alabama for example. I’d like to see an average differential from preseason to final poll. For example, a team that gets ranked 5 (looking at you, LSU, year in year out, and finishes 22nd on average scores lower than a team that finishes 7th.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

Preseason rankings are always a joke, but I can actually feel for the poor writers who have to do a little critical thinking when it comes to OSU this season.

Its not as simple as their usual formula of “returning mediocre qb, returning mediocre coach, returning mediocre defense... definitely the #3 team in the nation.”

I had missed the story on Baldwin. The current system is stupid and needs to change. Either let every kid transfer once without penalty OR force every transfer to sit a year no exceptions. The waiver adds uncertainty where there doesn’t need to be any.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

When it comes to ever being consistent with transfers, NCAA = No Chance At All.

I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if it uses a Magic 8 Ball.

He transferred right after the NCAA started making things more strict. Also he chose sitting out a year at home & learning a new offense over backing up Fields. His choice ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

HS
blueblazer22's picture

The state list is mostly chalk as in expected, but the highlight is Hawaii Resident. Good for the islands for not bowing to the pressure of adding an -item or an -er to the end. Hang loose.

If Urban can go through a season as a talking head and not once say the name of the school up north, that would be tremendous. Someone in Begas should create a line for that possibility.

But aren’t people in Hawaii called Hawaiians? Even my autocorrect recognizes it. Or is that term exclusive to people of native islander heritage?

I think the term is reserved for someone of Hawaiian ethnic heritage. I've seen Native Hawaiian used, but in general the term refers to the ethnic islanders.

It get's clicks. And for much of the country, with a new HC, new QB, new D coaches including DC, and 4/5 of the O-Line, it's not hard to defend overrated at #5. Now we just need to go out and prove them all wrong yet again.

ONE Not Done!

HS
osupax33's picture

I trust the guys who actually evaluate talent and watch games and tape. I listen to the 247 Cover 3 podcast for real takes. Those guys know these players and have evaluated them since high school and all the camps. 3 of the 4 guys on their picks for the playoffs, have the Buckeyes in. Also, only one of them (the one that didn't pick OSU) is buying Michigan being better than a 2 to 3 loss team this year.

West Coast Buckeye

HS
Extramedium's picture

That’s what drives me crazy, “new” being seen as a negative and “returning” being seen as a positive regardless of what talent level each has.  Haskins was a new QB last season and everyone put Wisconsin in the top 4 because of all their returning “talent.”  Yet this is the main metric no matter how many times this happens.

HS
Eddie27Zeke15's picture

The bar for hatred is set pretty low.

I will never understand fans who don’t understand that it is not the job of the media to love the Buckeyes as much as we do.

HS
Extramedium's picture

However it is their job to look at teams objectively and use their years of supposed experience doing nothing but watching and evaluating college football and come up with some realistic predictions.  To pick us to finish 4th in the East last season is absolutely ridiculous.

What I love most is no one ever goes back and owns how horrible their picks were, and admit they are just throwing darts at a board, or copying other “experts” like people who aren’t paid to know what they are talking about.

HS
Eddie27Zeke15's picture

And he did that one year.

If you spend your entire professional life talking about football, you’re going to say some stupid stuff eventually.

Accountability is nice.  And I have seen plenty of year-end review shows/articles doing just that.  And guess what; every expert makes stupid picks every year.  So would you.  So would I.  But I agree that not everyone is accountable.

I don’t agree that a guy picking Ohio State 4th once automatically hates Ohio State.  I’m so very tired of the universe hates -insert your team here- mantra that every fan base can’t seem to function without.  Be better.  Be smarter.  Realize the world doesn't revolve around you.

Kids and their flaky ways.

If the grandparents are making the choice for him, why blame the kid? It's like blaming the pet instead of the owner.

Parents/grandparents/guardians of this generation need to stop making decisions for them and let these kids make some mistakes of their own. It's the best way to learn and become an adult.

I had some of the weirdest things stolen from me in the military and at college - just stupid little things - I imagine that a monogram could dissuade someone from taking the stapler knowing it's permanently etched.   But I would have bought a Sharpie or something - not have it monogrammed.
