Definitely agree, the talent on defense is totally absurd. If the coaching staff earns their money this should be a helluva good year for improvement on that side of the ball
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
I’ve gone back and watched the Nebraska, Minnesota, TCU and Indiana games. There were a LOT of missed tackles. Clean that up if you can, and you’ll have a lot more first down stops setting up the opposition for 2nd & longs and 3rd & longs.
but make no mistake, Schiano/Grinch/Taver/Davis didn’t miss those tackles.
The defense is talented but there are a handful of VERY weak links. Borland and Werner stand out. Replace Grappling Werner and Concrete Shoes Borland and we should be moving in the right direction.
Ive gone from thinking that Greg Schiano was a good defensive coordinator to now a bad defensive coordinator. Lets see how he does in his next job.

Very valid and Interesting perspective. That tells me this year, back to the top 10!
He’s pretty clearly a very good DC based on his entire career. Last season was a combination of too many cooks in the kitchen, especially the new one from the PAC 12, and I believe Sciano getting a little burnt out on the game.
I think it’s pretty obvious the Tenessee head coaching fiasco affected him in some way, seeing as how he stepped down from his role with the Patriots before he even started.
perhaps the rugby style tackling was un-coached.
I think that has A TON to do with it! Especially against Purdue, no way a Chris Ash taught defense let's Rondale Moore break all those tackles. Sure, kid is freaky athletic and very twitchy, but a lot of those big plays resulted in our secondary players going for the knockout SC Top 10 hit and not colliding at the hip and grabbing a leg to take him down, or slow him down long enough for the cavalry to clean it up

The uniform stripe should match the helmet stripe.
More specific the pant stripe should match the helmet.
That's fine... just widen the black stripe on the pants and the helmet, then they'll match, you'll be happy, and the uni will look much better. And being anti-gray jersey stripes is almost as bad as being anti-puppy. Who are these people, and where did they come from?
When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's
I am not anti-gray stripes. I am anit-a-bunch-of-different-kinds-of-stripes. I am also against different colored numbers. I've always thought that the gray stripes jerseys made the uniforms "noisy." I prefer a bit more symmetry for lack of a better word.
I think generally there is not enough gray on the uniforms. I do not agree that the gray stripes are the way to go about achieving it if there are going to be different stripes on helmet and pants.
I'm nearing fifty years of age so old enough to know that how you dress does in fact matter. I always come back to Coach Tressel saying the players like the alternate uniforms. I want the kids to suit up and feel like bad-asses. I want them confident and cocksure and ready to lay waste to the opposing team. Put them in that uniform. I think that is more important than if I like it.

I like the matching stripes but I love the Natty uniforms....compromise, add gray to the top and bottom of the shoulder stripe so the inner stripe is still the same and it picks up the gray/silver from the pants and helmets....OR....make the numbers & letters gray to add some gray to the jerseys.
"I don't want to be around average, why be around average!" -UFM
I just can’t believe people are paying so much attention to it. I’d have to google last year’s jerseys to even know what people are talking about with the shoulder stripes
The fact that the helmets and pants go more silver is what makes the gray stripe controversial. I love them either way. The playoff uniform with numbers on the shoulders was the best though.
In the constant recruiting wars, the WHAC is showing blatant signs of decadence and the gap between the haves (student-athletes) and the have nots (students), I would argue, is not what higher education should be impressing on society.
- signed, the father of three who owes $75,000 (and counting) in college loans.
Decadence? Well that’s a violation waiting to happen.
.And they want to start paying them also....
Your kids don’t contribute as much value to the university as football players.
Sadly, that’s what it boils down to.
But wait! Players need to be paid to play collegiate sports! /s

Class of 2001 - classless since then.
I can totally relate to what you're saying, Homey.
My daughter has that much S.L.D. from an undergrad degree from BGSU. But thankfully, she was just accepted to graduate school at Ohio State and her present employer is paying for it, THANK GOD!
I think more should be asked, "why has the cost of college education gone up more than the rate of inflation in recent decades?" And many kids can't get a job in their chosen fields? Then we have many jobs in the construction trades, where employees are making $80,000+/year and don't have ANY student loan debt, that are going unfilled.
"If you're not changing, you're falling behind."
It is amazing how many jobs are open in the construction field and how long it takes to fill the openings. Not everyone is meant to go to universities but with high schools basically saying that's the only route if you want to have a livable income is what I see as being a big contributor to this whole issue.
The company I work for pays for all of the schooling needed for you to obtain your journeyman card, so like you said there's no S.L.D., the classes are 2 nights a week for 4 years with some down time in between moving on the next years level. When it is all said an done you can be pulling in a ton of money. Our company works mostly prevailing wage jobs so our journeymen are pulling in around $62-$64 an hour after all benefits are calculated in, with the overtime they put in, some of them are pulling $100k plus a year.
Plus some some of our guys get to work at this beautiful stadium "along the banks of the Olentangy" every day, who wouldn't want that job?
What does your company do?
Let's just say we lit up the shoe.
I work Labor Compliance for a large GC here in Southern California and look at payrolls all day long. The trades make great money and benefits plus have the backing of a union. While there are triple digit temperature days when I don't envy those guys, I wish I had been shown that as a career path in my formative years. Plus you get to point at amazing builds like multi million/billion sports arenas and say "I helped build that!"
West Coast Buckeye
I'm a youth minister, and I tell my students all the time to think about trades over college. Some great work with great pay and minimum cost for education.
Thanks for what you do!
True Buckeyedude. I can't believe the cost of higher education since my son got out of college. There has got to be a way to provide college for our kids without the staggering debt involved.
I recently retired from an electric utility. HINT to young folks: Electric utility lineman are in very short supply all over the country ( and the world). The safety standards today have all but eliminated the hazards of the job in years past. They make a LOT of money but you have to endure some periods of adverse weather and long hours in emergency situations. All in all, a great career with a solid future. Worth looking in to if you like outdoor work.
I'm not trying to win a popularity contest. I'm trying to win football games-- Woody Hayes
Sunny, I’m also at an electrical utility, one of the largest in the US, and I can say the dangers are still there. Yes, I’m sure risks have been reduced by leaps and bounds over the years but they still earn their very nice paycheck. Many have died or been seriously injured during my time at the company.
Same here Silver. I didn't mean to downgrade the danger factor too much but today's safety standards are worlds better than in the past. Most of the injuries in our surrounding utilities were due to not followings safety procedures. Miscommunications and rushing the job were the greatest enemy. But, as you say, the danger is still there. Be safe at work.
Exactly! I agree 100%
To me, everything looks just too sanitized (not sure that’s the right word). There is no character to the rooms, and there is a little concern that the players or coaches start to reflect the vibe i get from these pics. Lots of bells and whistles but no heart. No soul. I’m only seeing empty pics though I’m expecting that if people were in there i would feel differently
Bottom line is it’s all cool. And good to be king.
I totally agree with your sentiment. Why do student athletes deserve more than regular students? Its disgusting.
- Signed, guy who is on Ohio State athletic site that talks non stop about these student athletes and demands more from them than the total GPA for the University as a whole.
demands more from them than the total GPA for the University as a whole.
You realize most of these guys could never get into Ohio State if they didn't play football, right?
- signed, the father of three who owes $75,000 (and counting) in college loans.
Homey don't pay that!
I resemble that remark.
I wish someone would let everyone know how much college costs beforehand. And loans- it would be nice if they would explain you have to pay those back.
Your kids also don't spend every single waking non-class/studying hour watching film, working out, practicing, conditioning, and rehabbing because they are beating the sh!t out of their bodies. Not trying to trash your kids, but these football players go WAY above what a normal student does on a daily basis and given they spend just about every spare moment in these facilities - I have no problem tossing in these bennies....
The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced
If your kids are going to school for something that requires state of the art athletic training and recovery facilities, I could see your point, but the average student doesn’t need any of this stuff to pass their Philosophy 101 class (that the football player also has to take btw)
if the athletes are getting a better library or computer lab, or better professors for their classes, your complaint would make a lot more sense.
I've already expressed my uni opinion. Don't worry, Kevin. Some folks have bad taste in clothing, just look at the outfits and color combinations they wear.
Also the question is very misleading and confusing-- between only gray or a combo of 3 colors.
Who wants solely gray stripes?
The nat'l champ home unis are Gray AND White stripes with thin black lines.
The nat'l champ road unis are Gray AND Red stripes with thin black lines.

Gray stripes. For the love of God, Gray stripes.
Call it what you want, but it’s Gray stripes.
Fields goes off, the defense trends towards Silver Bullet standards.
Yes, please. With gray stripes on top.
Hindsight is, and in, 2020
I would love to see Fields put up video game numbers. I also hate it when people use the phrase "video game numbers" because there isn't a video game anymore to put up the numbers in and thats disappointing to me.
The talent is definitely there on this team, and based on recruiting, will be there for a while. I think this is going to be a fun journey. While we are all optimistic about Ryan Day, there is still a level of uncertainty there. He is not a known quantity like Urban was. That uncertainty adds a bit of excitement that wasn't there before. At least for me. For the first time in a long time we are going into a season and I really don't know what to expect. Its already more fun than it has been for a while.
about Ryan Day, there is still a level of uncertainty there.
One of the great things about tOSU, its really smart people making smart decisions that us graduates get to enjoy for the rest of our lives. How did you originally feel about this guy?
I was 12 when he was hired so I didn't know much about him and my understanding of the college football world was elementary at best. My only real memory of it was his speech during the basketball game. I remember being really excited that he was going to focus on beating michigan because I lived in michigan and wanted nothing more than for Ohio State to win that game once in a while because I was really tired of getting picked on all the time.
I was almost 30 when he was hired and I guarantee I didn't know any more about him then you. I was sitting at an Applebee's downing some beers when the news came across. My first word was "Who?!?". Needless to say, I'm ecstatic with how things turned out.
"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
Im actually more confident about the Ryan Day hire than I was with the Jim Tressel hire.
I remember that announcement and felt pretty good about it. I knew that he had won at YSU big time. Some concern about moving up, but he had showed that he could build/maintain a program and could coach
We graduates*. I learn’t that at OSU
Black, white, and red?
I'll expect your resignation letter by the the end of the day.
The national champ unis had black white and red stripes no? See comment above.

See, that makes it even more baffling that so many people voted for it.
I wish that Staff could be down-voted.
"Spokane, Spokane, Spokane......Man."
I thought that maybe time of possession was an issue in that the offense was getting off the field too quick and tiring the defense. Turns out that in 2018 the offense was on the field for just over half the game which was 3 minutes more than 2017.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
And you’re damn right he will have video game numbers. Don’t forget Pollack is a Bulldog himself. He knows what’s coming.
It’s hilarious watching fans, whether it’s OSU or other in the B1G, make it seem like a diss when they compare Fields to JT lol. Like he isn’t one of the most decorated QBs in conference history? Like he didn’t just have 3k passing yards on 64.7%, 44 total TDs & nearly 800 rushing? Not to mention his unparalleled leadership? Just absolutely comical. Name a non-OSU B1G QB in the last 10-15 years that consistently put up those kinds of numbers?
He would also inexplicably collapse at the worst possible time.
What, like Penn State 2017? Or Penn State 2014? Or any of the numerous examples I could give where he willed the team to victory? GTFO with that BS.
I cannot name a quarterback with those numbers. But I also cannot name a quarterback that started as many total games as he has.
To add onto Ethos's comment.... What I can name though, is a couple quarterbacks that clutched their way through playoff wins and national titles.
The guy in your avatar is definitely not one of them.
In Dwayne’s one loss, he still looked like the best player on the team and clearly wasn’t the reason for the loss. In JT’s losses, he often looked bad. In the Clemson game he was awful. Dwayne steered the worst defense in school history to a 13 win season. JT’s nearly 4 years of starting brought Urban’s winning percentage down. He also had many more opportunities to win a national championship than Dwayne and didn’t. JT was a good college football player, a great leader, and a great buckeye, but Dwayne was a much better QB.
All facts. But keep in mind you're responding to someone who legitimately thought Tate Martell should start over Haskins (DURING the season). *Bosa shrugs*
Give Haskins that 2016 defense and we're looking at another title.
I agree. And I've stopped taking JTStan's comments seriously since I joined this board.
Just wish I could source the few people who downvoted my comment that was composed of literally only facts. I've got plenty of actual opinions but like you said... *Bosa shrug*
'''''There's a strong group of Buckeye fans who vocally loathe the quarterback run, but I cannot express to you how stoked I am to see it back in the offense this season."""
PB, Woody, JT and UFM all used the QB run and won championships... JT and UFM have owned the BIG and ttun using the QB run.... 83-9 7-0 I think half the fans we have don't watch the games they're just here to enjoy style points and with them style points must be gained by passing the ball for bragging rights.
The jersey stripes are a nonissue with me I like them as long as the players are wearing them and are happy. The Alt uniforms are great , maybe once or twice a year is all we see them and most are done well and some are very nice. Traditions change and usually for good reasons or else nothing would change and we would live in the same old drab boring world and we would hold our youth hostage to some standard that was found to be bad, ignorant or stupid to begin with and would disallow them from making their own traditions. I know I was really upset when they got rid of those leather helmets , they were the cats meow..
Our redzone offense is going through the roof.
QB run is effective, but I just hated seeing it as it was seemingly the staple of our offense. It doesn't make sense to me to have your QB leading in rushing attempts in a game when your tailbacks are pretty damn good. But yeah, hopefully the ability for the QB to run will open things up for everybody this season.
It gives you numbers and keeps the defense honest. Plus Fields is 6-3, 225 and really, really good at running.
I don’t think anyone but Tom Brady actually “hates” the QB run. We just hated 3rd and 5 with an empty backfield and the entire universe knowing it was coming. We also got tired of it working vs teams like Indiana but absolutely failing against teams like Clemson, and our coaches not having worked out another strategy during the weeks they had to prepare.
Best post of the day, PRO8. Nice!
The Philistines originally came from Southern Europe. Not even sure where to go with that one-certainly didn't see that coming. Everyone assimilated but it is still surprising to find that connection.
David Pollack generally dislikes the Buckeyes almost as much as Desmond does, so initially I was going to discount what he said, but considering the Fields/UGA connection maybe I won't ignore Pollack entirely. I certainly think that his numbers can be ridiculous, it is just weird to think of Pollack being right since it seems to happen so infrequently.
"They say, "these geeks come a dime a dozen. I'm lookin' for the guy who's supplyin' the dimes." -Classy Freddie Blassie
Look at it this way:
1. Pollack's prediction is right and he can say I told you so.
2. Pollack's prediction is wrong and he can talk endlessly about them failing to meet expectations.
Exactly, whenever these Buckeye haters say things like this, I almost believe it’s to inflate expectations so that the fall is harder if things don’t go well.
I like one shade of shoulder stripes: gray.
There are no shoulder stripes that are just grey.
Just can’t believe people have such strong opinions about shoulder stripes.

the poll needed pics of the two options side-by-side...bet it would've been a lot more lop sided towards gray if readers could see the blatant difference...jmo
>There's a strong group of Buckeye fans who vocally loathe the quarterback run
I was certainly one of those fans lumped in that category from the 2015-2017 seasons. I think there's a massive difference in having a quarterback run option, and it being your greatest crutch.
We play to win the big games. Not to beat Rutgers. Simple and crutched offensive styles won't beat the Clemsons of the world. We need the ability to spread the ball, gun it, and beat them with multiple layers of talent. If used correctly, I think the quarterback run will be an awesome benefit and I can't wait to see it used properly.
Yep. The quarterback run has it's place, but most of us hated it because the QB run had become a crutch.
And helps put the QB on crutches.

Feel bad asking, but Kevin, can we get Saturday Skullies back early? Or, are you just waiting until the first game?
You don't know what you have until it's gone .... for example, toilet paper.
Maybe the people who voted for the black, white and red option felt they had an opportunity to voice their opinion without being told they are wrong and stupid. So they came out of the woodworks and voted in full force, but you never see them in the comments because they know how much flak they would get.
Thought the same. Like, that’s not a hill anyone is willing to die on so they let the gray stripers say what they gotta say and move on.
Just for the information, thats not a VR station, thats actually a sleep pod
The skewed uniform numbers are coming from a generation of adult men that insist on wearing tight pink shorts and pants and expect not to be ripped on. I expect nothing less.
TIL: Baby Boomers wear pink shorts.
Must be due to the soft treatment during the post-war years.
If you see a baby boomer wearing pink shorts you can pretty much assume he opened the wrong drawer and has a pair of womens shorts on by accident.
And they fit
Gotta believe that 46% of Eleven Warriors readers have no idea of what Buckeye unis look like!
I’m confused, I thought ESPN hates OSU and doesn't allow it’s analysts to say anything positive about the program?
They have to at least TRY to mask their contempt. Plus, their could be pockets of writers who are neutral but overall, many Buckeye haterz at ESecPN
I laughed, but then I realized you were being serious.
I’m no conspiracy theorist in general, but to me their hate for OSU is pretty obvious. Your pro-ESPN bias around here always makes me chuckle. Thank you for that, Cincy.
The fact you can’t tell the difference between “pro-ESPN”, which I am 100000% not, and anti-crazy misinformed get mad about nothing guy, is sad.
It probably would have made a difference to have photos comparing the specific stripe options that were being referred to in the poll. Not everyone (including myself) will remember what all the types look like.
As for alternate uni's, I personally love them. I think a couple times a year is fine and certainly doesn't hurt with recruiting.
There's a strong group of Buckeye fans who vocally loathe the quarterback run

I believe Ohio State's defense will be much improved and worthy of Silver Bullet talk. The offense will be much more balanced which will make it very lethal. Sure, the passing numbers may drop, but when the offense is more balanced and unpredictable the benefits will be huge.
Fact: I don’t really care what uniforms they wear, much less stripes. That said, I really like the all-grays.
I'm sure those fair-trade organic gummy bears add a little color to the all grays for you.
Man, I have never heard of these fair-trade varietals. Must be a Cali only thing. But, I’d bet they make the red scarlet shoes really pop.
Somehow, 46 percent of you think that Ohio State's current shoulder stripes are better than the gray stripes of the uniforms worn during the College Football Playoff.

I always liked a good mix of the qb run. 5 to 7 carries and some rollouts that cld go for some yards if no one is open.. I've liked most the unis they have rolled out.. Kids like them and fashion is a thing now..
The quarterback run is an effective weapon at the right time. I hated the qb run on 1st and 2nd down, but give me the qb run every time on 3rd and 1 and inside the 10. JT was unstoppable on 3rd and short, even when teams knew it was coming.
The problem is when we couldn’t get to 3rd and short vs talented defenses
Grey stripes with the black numbers. Make the National Championship uniforms permanent!!
You know I’m glad David Pollack hasn’t backed off why he said about Fields as a true freshman. I was wondering if just cause he went to Ohio State if he would’ve backed off of his comments about him.
The Future is Bright at Ohio State
He would also inexplicably collapse at the worst possible time.
Like against that team up north? That would be the worst.
With all due respect to Lunardi, Memphis with be a top 2 seed. I know they're young, but they'll most likely run the table in AAC, and I just can't fathom them being as low as a 4. If they are, the Committee needs to do whatever it takes to square them off against UK ASAP.
"Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more important than any other one thing." - Abraham Lincoln
I'm all for the QB run when we have plenty of depth at the position. But right now, it appears we do not have that kind of depth. It's a long season - and by the looks of things, if Fields goes down we're screwed.
Early in the season, I would like to see us incorporating Fields in the running attack just enough to keep defenses honest - and absolutely no more than that until near the end of the season -
