How Do You Feel About Ryan Day Not Naming a Starting Quarterback at This Point?

He hasn't had that much time with any of them.  They are all so young.  They don't have a game for a couple months. I'm indifferent.

If he had a squad full of seniors I'd probably feel different about it,

I understand that you want every player to compete for playing time but if Fields doesn't get all of the 1st team reps in practice I will be disappointed. Everybody knows he is the starter as long as he keeps a professional attitude and doesn't do something dumb to threaten his position.

Voted "dislike" for this very reason... and it's a little disingenuous to Hoak, we all know who is going to start.

Me too. It’s a sign that every open position is up for grabs.

You’re up, Justin.

Indifferent - Everyone knows it's Justin's to claim, it's just not his yet.

At this point without a returning starter it is neither here nor there that a starter isn't named. I'd place it firmly in the land of "coachspeak" for the media. I don't think he was being coy either so nothing to see here.

We all know Justin Fields is going to be the starting quarterback for The Ohio State University Buckeyes. Personally, I do not care that Day hasn't named him the starter, it's more of a mental thing for Justin's sake. This does not bother me in the slightest.

Love it. Competition is the norm for Ohio State. No one is promised a job and must improve during practice and earn it.

As a veteran of multiple QBgeddon incidents, I'm pretty much indifferent on this.

I'm indifferent also but I think I think not naming is as much for Hoak as Fields. Gunner needs to be ready and engaged at all times.

HS

I'm not surprised by the move, but I personally don't like it.  Nobody thinks that the QB position is an open competition--it's Fields' job.  The only way he won't be the starter is if he's injured in summer camp.

Voting love it is silly in my opinion. Fields had a full semester more time with the offense than Gunnar Hoak. It's not like he's beating out an incumbent... (let's be real, Chugger isn't starting). It's one thing to be indifferent, but if you think there is a chance in hell Fields isn't the starter barring injury, I have beachfront property to sell you in Siberia.

I think we all know how it's going to turn out, but I like that it sends the message that no matter how highly touted you are as a recruit you still have to earn your time and prove you are the best option. Hopefully this holds true at other positions, not just QB.

I dislike it because it's fucking obvious that it's going to be Justin Fields.  I suppose if this is supposed to motivate Fields in some way, then there's a positive to it..

But at the same time, I don't like having my intelligence insulted.  LOL...I think we know who it's going to be.

My understanding is that Day is taking a much more serious approach to the players competing for jobs across the board at every position. Meyer used to play favorites to upper classman and “leaders”. I strongly prefer the open competition where young guys can overtake the veterans to get the best players on the field over having certain positions already locked without anyone having a real chance to overtake them.

I don't love it because of the uncertainty it suggests at the most important position on offense.  But I do like it because it indicates there's an open competition.

Contrary to a lot of the opinions stated above, I actually believe Coach Day when he says nobody has won the job yet.  From everything I've heard/read, Coach Day is very high on both Fields and Hoak.  Although, if I had to bet on it, I'd bet on Fields.

But these are still college kids.  Hoak is a bit older than Fields and while neither has played a lot, Hoak's been in college football two years longer than Fields.  And Coach Day likes his arm strength, accuracy and smarts.

On the other hand, there's a reason Fields was a 5-star coming out of high school and Hoak was only a 3.  Again, I think it'll be Fields - but I'm not as certain of it as a lot of 11Wers seem to be -

I may be guilty of reading between the lines of some comments I've heard/read about TM - but my understanding is, his passing was not progressing enough for Coach Day to feel comfortable playing him.  I'm not so sure he'd have truly been in the mix.

Could be why he transferred.  I understand he's not necessarily a shoe-in to start at Miami, for that matter.

It hurts me to say that because I really liked him coming out of high school -

I agree. I think his passing ability didn't improve with better coaching. I also think it probably exposed the Nevada football program as not as big as Bishop Gorman was made out to be that year. I don't think any of the Bishop recruits that came with 2-3 years of him plus/minus have done much in their college careers have they?

i find it funny in the sense that the whole talk of "competition" and "winning the job" didn't come out of coach days mouth until matt baldwin left. it's nothing more than lip service to make it appear there was always goinig to be a  competition when, in truth,  the job was given to fields as soon as he agreed to transfer.

i think baldwin got a raw deal, but i just hope this works out and we can get back to the playoffs and being relevant  again. (because, right now it's clemson and bama - then everybody else.....and ohio state needs to get back in that conversation again.)

I voted indifferent. If there was a game tomorrow, I might have another view, but this is news for lack of any other news.

Yes we all know Justin is gonna be the guy... he is a highly touted 5 star guy with all the talent in the world... with that being said he is in a new offense with a new supporting cast... there is only a month and a half till week 1... there is no time for a “competition” fields needs all the reps with the 1s he can get to get ready for the season

I'm indifferent because it's still early... I'll love it if he names the starter after one or two weeks of fall camp, and I'll hate it if we (and more importantly the QBs/team) find out on the first snap like 2015.

I don't really care either way. The best QB should start and it would not be surprising if Fields had to improve during the coming camps. I would be shocked if he is not the guy but this is the sort of thing you should be saying.

Now, if he started one year and played well and is coming back. That would be a different story. Guys that stay after a good season should be the huge favorite to start the following year. Haskins for instance would be the starter this year if he stuck around.

HS

I like it. I fully expect Fields to start, because he will show that he's the best option..  But holding off on naming a starter sends a message (not just to Fields and the QBs and everybody) that everyone has to earn a job.

The Spring game is a glorified practice with a big crowd. Around 35% completion rate is what I want to forget. Sure 70% is unlikely but being at or above 55 - 60% will be good to see. Go earn it and show what you've got.
Gonna be a really good year.

I got into a million debates about this.As soon as it was mentioned that Fields was considered ing osu. I said job was his. People gave me grief about it. They thought Baldwin and his “bus” had a chance. There never was a competition. Job was Fields. Said same thing about Haskins last year. As soon as he came in behind against Michigan, the job the following year was his. Meyer has to show his hand at that point. Joe B never had a chance nor did Baldwin.

HS

It’s ridiculous to think that Fields isn’t going to be a starter. You’re exactly right that it was going to be his job even if Baldwin stayed. Even with the advantage of being at OSU and knowing the system Baldwin knew that he wasn’t going to start. Does anyone really believe that the second string QB from Kentucky is going to come in and beat Fields out? Day is clearly using coach speak to keep pushing Fields. It’s funny that you would catch grief for stating the obvious.

Everyone expects that our great coaches will let a great competition to happen to measure our second and third options. Hopefully good health is always on our side but anything is possible so the Summer competition might prove valuable later.

HS

I like it.

Justin Fields obviously has the raw skills, given his recruiting rankings, but he still needs to prove that he is the right guy at Ohio State. He needs to show that can:grasp the entire playbook, make adjustments, make good decisions, throw the ball accurately, lead the team, get the tough yards, etc. etc.  Fields had a decent spring game, but he didn't light the world on fire. We need a few weeks of fall camp to ensure everything is coming together, and competition will help that.

Blue Eyed Buckeye's picture

I'm in the minority i guess but I straight up hate it.  Urban did the exact same thing and *surprise* every single time the QB we all expected to get named starter was named starter.  Coincidentally, Urban's teams were often slow starters with underperforming first-halves of the year.

I don't think this is a coincidence.  When you leave the players uncertain what's going to happen they can't gel as a unit.  I much prefer to have all the starting postiions settled as early as possible in summer camp so everyone can bond as a unit.

Justin Fields today is tied for 3rd highest Heisman odds in the entire country.

So if Chug beats out Fields as the starter, does Chug jump to 3rd highest Heisman odds behind Trevor and Tua?   LOL.  Of course not, all gamesmanship by Coach Day.
