But it is not a complete do-over — with her just taking James Bond’s secret agent number after he retires from MI6, the report states.

Bond himself will still be played by Daniel Craig — and will still adhere to his old-fashioned macho characteristics, an insider told the UK paper.

Hopefully, for those that will spend money to watch it, it will be better than the semi recent remake of Ghostbusters.

There’s been other women agents for mi6.  She’s not James Bond, so what’s he big deal?

HS

So is this for just one movie or solidified after Craig's Bond retires?

I would love to know why, after 26 films of the series, it has only now officially jumped the shark.

Well I mean here is how I see it. 007 is James Bond, you can't be a female with James Bond as the name, so will the character get a name change?

Personally when I heard Idris Elba (sp?) was a possible new James Bond I was genuinely excited because I think hes a phenomenal actor.

But this, no thanks. Ghostbusters and star wars have completely turned me off to this shoving things down peoples throats

HS

Maybe you should read some information about it before you talk about it.

Shes not James Bond, she merely has an agent number of 007 because he’s retired before he returns from retirement in the James Bond move.   Based on James Bond, starring craig as James Bond.  She’s just a supporting character in a James Bond movie.

Maybe stop the overreacting.

Well stop giving me garbage movies and the theft will stop. I don't pirate video games, I purchase them and if its bad I get a refund. Maybe if theaters offered refunds I would go and pay for more movies

If James Bond retired then his number should have been retired and hanging from the rafters of the agency....nobody gets that number.

So what did you think Idris Elba was going to bring to the role of Bond other than being a good actor? What about him playing Bond was a good idea? There are lots of good actors. What sort of James Bond story would you be able to tell with Elba that you couldn't with a more traditionally cast James Bond?

Idris Elba is a charming man from Britain and a good actor. That checks all the boxes that matter for playing James Bond.

It makes sense from a casting standpoint going forward. Title the films "007" and you can cast anyone you want. Shes not gonna be James Bond lol. But theyll likely keep it in the same universe. I might go see it. Might not. I dont know this actress.

Maybe they should just make a movie for once without trying to specifically promote these social justice narratives. Even if you're trying to pander to a different audience you don't have to come out and say that you are. Maybe let the movie be a surprise (since Daniel Craig will still be Bond AND in this movie) so that these dumb narratives don't form around things.

Well when you are stunt casting if everyone doesn't know your stunt casting you've defeated the point of stunt casting. They HAVE to tell everyone. The only bad publicity being no publicity and all of that.

If this chick simply has the 007 license, fine. There ARE other 00 agents referenced in both the books and the movies-no reason why one of them can't be a black female. Felix Leiter, bond's CIA counterpart, was recently played by Jeffrey Wright-obviously black. That's fine-Leiter is described as being a Texan by Ian Fleming-that's it. No reason why the character can't be black.

Fwiw, Naomie Harris-Moneypenny in the last couple-is way hotter than the new chick.

OTOH, if the actual character was changed in gender and race, I would be outraged. Ian Fleming created plenty of black or non-identified characters. James Bond was not one of them-he is clearly described and identified, and he doesn’t look like Idris Elba. Would anyone want to see John Shaft being played by Zach Efron or James Franco?

Modern science says that's a myth.

For the record, when did 'they' start turning the heat up?  Was it when women got the right to vote, or before then?  Did it start with the 13th-15th amendments?  Do we have to go back even further?  You can make a serious case that the events of 1775-1783 were extremely detrimental to free anglo (don't get me started on the damn saxons either) male property owners on the world stage.  We, and I of course have to use that term rather loosely, were doing quite fine until the seppo yanks had to go mucking about with concepts like inalienable rights, consent of the governed, etc.  I mean, it was all well and good for some ivory tower types to philosophize about that stuff, but to actually put Locke's cockamamie ideas into practice?  Madness, and look where it has gotten us!

I thought History was all cried out from real injustices rather than getting triggered by what Hollywood does in a fiction movie.  History should stop going around looking for things to be offended by.  Why, back in my day History was tough.  It might get a bit misty over a black death or mongol invasion, but it didn't get its knickers in a twist over whatever radical ideas were coming out of London's Theatre district.

HS
Frimmel's picture

I'll wait for a proper preview but I am not thus far enthusiastic about this one. "Spectre" left me really flat and I thought it did all the sorts of fan service things they got right in "Skyfall" very wrong.

I haven't missed a Bond movie in the cinema since I've been old enough to start going to them. Star Trek, then Star Wars, Terminator next, and now it is looking like James Bond wants a spot in the queue.

You've got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

HS
Wargor's picture

Gender war?  We live in a world of honor killings, disproportionate rape and domestic abuse impacts, and disproportionate representation in politics at pretty much every level across almost all of the world, not to mention vast swaths of the globe where explicit rights are not equal.  But this, this casting of a female 007 is gender war?  Makes me wonder if I even know what the word 'war' means anymore.  I thought I did, growing up on stories of Vietnam and WWII from my father and grandfathers, but down the slippery slope of a War on Drugs, a War on Crime, and now a Gender War, I'll admit that I'm a bit confused.  This looks more like free enterprise to me.  Make a product, see who will buy it.

What else would you call taking masculine role models away and replacing them with women?

You've got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

HS
logamaniac's picture

Who took away James Bond from anyone?  This is a James Bond movie.

Also why is it a bad thing to promote strong fictional characters (that you call a role model) that aren’t only limited to males?  Seems like there’s roughly half the population out there that might be interested to know that as well.

The only thing that should matter is if the writing, acting and effects are good enough combined to make a quality product.

The free market in a society that has proven reliably predictable in how it will spend its entertainment dollars.

Those who will trash and boycott work of this type don't represent a large enough market segment for those producing the movies to worry about.  At least in their calculus, which as far as I know, they are free to make, and risk being wrong about.  Just as people are free to get the vapors about it if they choose.

My first reaction to this is the woman in the photo is a dude. I mean did he just shave his mustache for that photo? They couldn't find an actually hot black woman? The article calls Lynch stunning. Who are they trying to convince? Last movie we got her:

My second reaction is that this looks like cover to not only call me racist but sexist as well if I have any reaction other than overwhelming positivity to this news. Any criticism can be deflected by calling me "bad" thus making what they've done "good."

One the one hand Bond has been the template for product cinema for quite some time now. But this seems like another one of those taking your audience for granted choices. Script by focus group is a really bad way to make a movie.

Bond is retired in Jamaica and therefore his 007 is available for another agent to use. That agent heads to Jamaica to get him to un-retire. Safe to assume he will and he'll get his famous 007 tag back as well...

From original article...

The story begins with Bond retired in Jamaica. But spymaster M – played by Ralph Fiennes – calls him back in desperation to tackle a new global crisis...

Go Bucks!

HS
Frimmel's picture

James Bond fans wanting 007 to be either black or female are in for a double treat — with the movie spy about to be played by a black woman, according to a report on Sunday.

British actress Lashana Lynch, 31, will be introduced as the new 007 in what is being described as a “popcorn-dropping moment” in the franchise’s 25th movie that is currently being filmed, according to the Mail on Sunday.

But it is not a complete do-over — with her just taking James Bond’s secret agent number after he retires from MI6, the report states.

Bond himself will still be played by Daniel Craig — and will still adhere to his old-fashioned macho characteristics, an insider told the UK paper.

“Bond, of course, is sexually attracted to the new female 007 and tries his usual seduction tricks, but is baffled when they don’t work on a brilliant, young black woman who basically rolls her eyes at him and has no interest in jumping into his bed,” a source told the Mail.

The insider called it a “pivotal scene” when Bond is called back from retirement and introduced to Lynch as the new 007.

“It’s a popcorn-dropping moment. Bond is still Bond but he’s been replaced as 007 by this stunning woman,” the source told the Mail.

Londoner Lynch, who played the fighter pilot Maria Rambeau in “Captain Marvel,” is hoped to modernize the franchise criticized by many as being too dated and sexist.

“This is a Bond for the modern era who will appeal to a younger generation while sticking true to what we all expect in a Bond film,” the source said.

“There are spectacular chase sequences and fights, and Bond is still Bond but he’s having to learn to deal with the world of #MeToo.”

That is the entire text of the article linked in the post starting this thread. https://nypost.com/2019/07/14/lashana-lynch-cast-as-007-in-new-james-bon...

So maybe I did miss the point in that Ms. Lynch isn't the new "James Bond." She's the new 007. Which of course doesn't at all reinforce my idea that this is all a trap. Gosh, ground-breaking update there. Because 007 and James Bond aren't synonymous. You don't think of one without the other. But 007 is just a number and James Bond is still James Bond.

(I'd like to point out that the first line of the article does not make a distinction between 007 and James Bond does it? It isn't deliberately crafted to play with the idea that 007 and Bond are synonymous.)

Now I see it not simply as pandering but as utterly spineless pandering. This is certainly the way to get me to renounce my misogyny and get me in the cinema.

Wait. They still need the man to come and save the day though don't they. Misogyny is saved!!!!

Maybe their focus groups are more on point than I thought. The film is going to have it both ways.

You've got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

This kind of stuff mostly gets a shrug from yours truly.

Now, the stuff about forcing boys into girls' athletic competitions kind of pisses me off as it represents a deliberate, malicious attempt at destroying culture.

I can't read the article, but the piece it shows me would tend to have me agreeing that it is a bigger issue than what's in a fictional movie.  Of course, that's not a high bar...

CT high schools allow biological males to compete in girls' divisions with predictable results. A 16-year old girl and her family are pushing back via the courts. I'm rooting for them; this is yet another milepost on our path to insanity.

HS
johnblairgobucks's picture

I never really cared for the James Bond series in the first place. I've caught some movies on TV, and the Sean Connery ones were the better versions, but they were only so so, imo. Austin Powers was better.

HS
Frimmel's picture

They're trying to have it both ways and get off on a technicality. They know the core audience for these films isn't all that enthusiastic about a non-traditional James Bond. But a "core audience" for something not under the Disney umbrella isn't going to make bank. They need to "update" the franchise and try to draw in the crowd that doesn't want to see a James Bond movie. They want the crowd that wants to see a "female James Bond" or a "black James Bond" so they can make more money. I think though they'll just manage to create something no one wants to see.

I don't want to see Bond striking out with women. I certainly don't want to see him striking out with unattractive women who've taken his job. That's certainly what I'm looking for in my male power fantasy films.
