Haha, typing multiple names for the Big Board isn’t required anymore.   :)

Are you confident that Cowan is ours as he’s the only DL listed?

I seriously need to figure out what the hell I'm going to do for next several months if the Big Board is going to be down to two players very shortly.

Yea let’s have some guys decommit soon so we can get back to crootin

Can I interest you in the year 2021?

Because I couldn't go for 3.

Yeah, I'm not complaining. I'll still follow recruiting; 2021 and national news.

What did you do to lose so much weight if you don't mind me asking?

HS

Way to go NNB. That will reduce the cholesterol and blood pressure numbers for sure . And if pre diabetic certainly your glucose and A1C will improve.  Congrats and keep us informed of your continued progress.

Wow. That’s pretty awesome

HS

How were you able to stay motivated to lose weight? That's my biggest obstacle.

HS

I quit smoking 2 years ago and over a year put on almost 40 pounds I was up to 223.  I started Keto.  Once I got into it I just felt alot healthier and was able to go from 223 down to 190 in 2 1/2 months.  So seeing the quick results and feeling better kept me motivated.

HS
Weave77's picture

That’s amazing... you lost like a whole other person! Congrats man!

HS

So you had some pounds committed, that you decided to push out of the class? Tough choice but good on you!

Those who say they can and those who say they can't are both right. Which one are you?

Had the same question!  What does that say about us?

And before someone infers something incorrectly, Mrs Buctor is way, way better than I deserve.  And she'd have to shed more than 190!

I really hope the dline guy we can make some kind of move on is Evans.

I just don’t like any one else we’ve been after. Would rather just get a QB instead of Cowan.

HS
Buckeye06's picture

Did Cowan piss in your Cheerios? You have dogged him a lot in the last month.  If the coaches take him I’m fine with that approach.  Maybe Johnson sees something he can mold.  I agree he didn’t look great at camps but again, it’s camps and some guys don’t camp well

HS
BuckDrew's picture

Because I follow recruiting... and I don’t care for his talent.  That’s what we do here. That’s my opinion. He wasn’t just bad at camp... he was terrible. I expect a huge rankings fall.

I invite you to get over it if you’re personally offended by that take.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Is he too slow for you? Not strong enough? Bad technique? What stood out as bad on his film-or are you the type of fanboy who looks at random lists and decides someone isn’t high enough for you, despite Coach Johnson’s endorsement?

HS
logamaniac's picture

Does it matter?  So he doesn’t meet the eyetest of a fan, he’s allowed to feel that way so long as he’s not tweeting at the kid, leaving dead fish in his mailbox or a horse head in the guys bed.

HS
LandonTruckedCollins's picture

Not all of our D-Linemen need to be homeruns, Drew.  With Sawyer coming and the haul last year we can afford to take some depth guys.

HS
SuperFanBuck's picture

So I’ve been studying film recently and must say I’m extremely excited about Kourt Williams, Lathan Ransom and Cody Simon.  These guys all bring the wood and play with great tenacity.  They also cover really well in space and are versatile players instead of just your prototypical “thumpers”.  We saw the reports of them being great at the opening and able to stay with these elite backs in coverage.

All 3 of these guys are difference makers at LB/S.

They have anybody committed in this class that we might revisit if something big does come down that causes recruits to look around at other options?

HS
Rgeiger24's picture

Not really? I know Fleming mentioned recruiting Wingo after he decomitted from PSU but I doubt that's where we'd look. They have two good D-line prospects that I'm sure we'd check in on if we knew they had any interest. Their class is pretty weak from what I see really

HS

Agree on Wingo, don't think that's where they'd go with Simon in the class.

Could circle back to 2019 and see if Kaiir Elam becomes available

Five players whose Stock is Up on Rivals...you'll notice that 3/5 of them are OSU commits or one who may be one in 3 weeks

https://n.rivals.com/news/stock-report-five-prospects-whose-stock-is-rising

Bijan - FYI he was the highest ranked 4* before this rising stock:

Recruiting: The high four-star running back plans to make his commitment on Aug. 2. Ohio State, Texas and USC are considered the front-runners.

Overview: There are three five-star running backs ranked ahead of Robinson in Zachary Evans, Demarkcus Bowman and Kendall Milton but no player at that position had a better summer than Robinson, who was completely dominant at the Five-Star Challenge. He showed off terrific speed, awesome hands and playmaking ability that maybe no other running back in this class can show. There are bigger between-the-tackles backs in this class, but Robinson could be the best overall playmaker at the position.

Farrell’s take: Robinson is an interesting one because he could be a pure running back or an all-purpose back and he could easily work out of the spread as a slot receiver. He reminds me a bit of Miles Sanders who was a high four-star and had a solid career at Penn State but never reached that five-star status. Four five-star running backs would be a bit much, but if he's talented enough, why not? Each of these running backs brings something different to the table and Robinson is probably the most versatile.

Gee Scott Jr.

Recruiting: Scott has been committed to Ohio State since Christmas Day.

Overview: Scott opted to not attend the Five-Star Challenge, which would have been an outstanding showcase for his abilities, but he made a huge statement at The Opening. Not only is he a physical specimen and a strong outside receiver, but he has excellent hands and playmaking ability. The four-star receiver has been excellent all offseason, he looks great, he has surprising speed to stretch the field and he’s a tough matchup for any cornerback. This is a loaded receiver group with a lot of high-end players but it’s hard to argue there are nine better receivers in the group.

Farrell’s take: Scott Jr. is a very talented kid in a very talented and deep wide receiver class. He has the physical attributes you want and he is very athletic and good after the catch. There is a question about the level of competition he plays, but against the elite corners at The Opening, he was outstanding. The wide receiver debate will probably be our most heated.

Mookie Cooper:

Recruiting: A former Texas pledge, Cooper backed off that pledge and committed to Ohio State four months later.

Overview: The prevalence of small, shifty, super fast slot receivers has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, especially with the growth of spread offenses and looking for mismatches. Cooper fits that bill perfectly. He’s not tall, but he has a stocky, physical build and then once he gets off the line, nobody can keep up with him. Linebackers lunge at him and defensive backs can’t handle him when he’s at top-end speed deep down the field. Cooper is a highlight-reel waiting to happen and he was consistently good at the Five-Star Challenge.

Farrell’s take: Is Cooper Christian Kirk all over again? That's the question. He's not as tall as Kirk, was but both are shorter receivers yet sneaky strong and very shifty. Kirk earned his fifth star with a great performance at the Five-Star Challenge years ago but he was also closer to the five-star ranking. I don't see Cooper as a five-star yet, but he should move up.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Nice writeup and certainly a nod to Buckeye recruiting. I do think Scott gets his 5th star, just due to the fact that recruiting sites can't dedicate that much print to the debate without ultimately rewarding him. I think Cooper ends up in top-40 when all is said and done.

HS
Spartan13's picture

Cooper may be the most exciting here with Farrell saying he is very close to Christian Kirk as a prospect. I’m guessing Gee would have been made a 5 star if he went to the rivals camp based on the way he brought up Gee skipping it

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Right? That was petty, though he did note that he dominated at The Opening. Somewhere, Barton Simmons is smiling.

HS
MiamiBuckeye's picture

I love that if we didn't add another recruit after today and kept all the ones we have now we'd still probably be guaranteed to finish in the top 10 and well ahead of Michigan.

While we all like to make fun of James Franklin, Top247 (which is far better than the composite) had Penn State as the No.3 class in the country in 2019 behind Bama and UGA. If you go look for yourself, you’ll see a little 3 below the 13. They only had 23 commits as well.

It's a beautiful day in Columbus, Ohio... and TTUN still sucks.

HS

The composite has them at 11 and 247's own rankings have them at 9. Dunno where you are getting 13 and 3 from.

Edit: Nevermind, you are talking about the 19 class not the 20 class.

Also, Notre Dame insider EJ Holland just posted an article where he gave his “final take” on Ransom. Two small things:

1. I had kept my Paige crystal ball on OSU because I thought perhaps the numbers game would work out. That doesn't appear to be the case so I'm going to be changing that. Looking like it will be Ransom as the pure safety with Martinez a candidate to wind up there as well. Don't really view Kourt Williams as a potential DB but who knows on that one (looks more like a linebacker to me).

2. Was told by a pretty reliable individual that Knighton isn't going to visit FSU after the dead period and prior to announcing. Still waiting to submit a pick on that one because you just never know with the South Florida kids. But either way that one continues to look good.

You can say that again AE!

HS
BuckeyeBulldog's picture

Bummed about Paige. I liked his game but I'd be more than happy with Martinez and Ransom as our safety class. It just stinks he will probably end up at Michigan because of a numbers game on our end but he will be a good player for them.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

Just not good enough for us to regret it, I hope.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

HS
EBBuck03's picture

Does scUM landing Paige helping with them with Donovan Edwards or do you think they might not effect each other land much?  It pretty clear (if I'm not mistaken) that he's our No. 1 RB target next year and it seems like it might come down to a good old fashioned OSU vs. scUM battle for his services.

HS
Andrew Ellis's picture

Not sure on Edwards but that was one of my first questions as well. Haven’t heard if he and Paige are all that close.

EBBuck03's picture

Early indications have us in the lead for Edwards at the moment.  Seems like Alford is doing an amazing job making the kid a priority.  I just worry about little that he'd from Michigan and now might have a teammate in his ear who's likely a wolverine.

HS
JarheadBuck's picture

It is what it is...no need to worry.  Can't afford to consider any group as a combo package. If things don't work out this year for Paige, Edwards has to be sought as a single.  If it hurts us with him, so be it.  No other way you can play it, especially with them being in different classes.

That said, I think the '19 season (new staff showing how it will do and how it will use players) will be much more important to the next class than where a kid from their team went last year.

HS
Northbrook's picture

Great news on Knighton.

Kourt Williams is our hybrid LB/S but Simon could play that role too.

HS
Smitty516's picture

Bill Greene doesn’t seemed worried about FSU with Knighton, he makes it sound more like Miami is the dark horse for Ohio State to be concerned about. Thoughts on this AE?

HS
swflbuckeye1's picture

From what I’ve read BG has him committing to us on July 30th with no concern. His concern wit Miami is after he has committed. We have used up our official and South Florida kids always find there way on to Miami’s campus. Miami has 5 months to pick away at him after he commits to OSU and there’s a decent chance we may not get him back on campus since any return to Columbus would be on his own dime.

HS
CardaleFTW's picture

Oklahoma scares me a bit too. If Texas does indeed flip McLellan, I wouldn’t be too surprised if they gave their former commit a call.

It's a beautiful day in Columbus, Ohio... and TTUN still sucks.

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

Maybe.  But Evans is still out there for one of those teams.

HS

Makes sense to me. I always pay attention to Bill and the proximity to Miami would help them. That Chaney kid is a stud and I’ve heard they may be content with just him this cycle. Seems a little odd though since they didn’t sign a back last class.

Independence Village 22's picture

Have to say it sucks Paige will wind up playing up north. But that speaks volumes to how well Day had done recruiting this class..

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

You can consider RB Blake Corum in that same light: a really good talent, but at a position where we had someone higher on our board. In regards to Paider, though, remember that they made room for Martinez, even without a defined position; tells you how much the staff thinks about his talent.

Rivals 5 who have seen stock fall:

https://n.rivals.com/news/stock-report-five-rivals100-prospects-whose-st...

Darrion Henry -

Recruiting: Henry committed to Ohio State in late June.

Overview: From a physical standpoint, Henry looks the part and at 6-foot-5 and 270 pounds, the high four-star has even more room to add good weight to his frame. The problem Henry had at the Five-Star Challenge is that he didn’t win a lot of his reps and he struggled dominating that facet of the camp. There is no question he has proven he can take over before - that’s one reason why he’s ranked No. 45 in the 2020 class - but the strong-side defensive end rankings are pretty deep with 23 four-stars. Others have shined throughout this offseason at various events and will push Henry near the top of those rankings.

Farrell’s take: Henry looks great at times, but is inconsistent with his technique and plays too high sometimes. He has the look of a player who should dominate every rep but he doesn’t live up to that as often as we’d like to see.

HS
Drewbdu's picture

Wasn’t he still injured at the 5 star challenge? Seems unfair to drop him because of that.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Kind of agree, but the camps are where the best players match up against each other and where we know so much emphasis on ratings is placed. Tough decision for Henry as to whether to participate, and risk not being 100%, or skip the event to heal and miss out on a rare and unique opportunity for a high school athlete.

HS
LandonTruckedCollins's picture

If technique and consistency are the problem, especially while injured, LJ will fix that up.

HS

So Ransom tweeted that he is announcing at 5:00 EST... as if we didn’t already feel good about his commitment today. The kid lives in in AZ, and is framing the announcement in terms of EST. He is talking to a specific audience here. The biggest competition for his commitment, TX and ND, are the central time zone. I think OSU is the only team being considered in the eastern time zone.

HS

Unless I'm mistaken, I'm fairly certain South Bend is EST

You’re right.  My mistake, I was sure that SB was CST, but only parts of IN are CST. Most is in EST, which seems odd with the state being so far from the East coast, and states to its South being on CST.

Could Ohio State match what Oklahoma did last year and land three five-star wide receivers? It could happen. Julian Fleming is already ranked as a five-star and Gee Scott Jr.  is putting himself in the discussion as he continues to improve. But I really like Jaxon Smith-Njigba as well and Mookie Cooper will probably be moved from athlete to wide receiver before all is said and done. It will be tough to match the Theo Wease Jadon Haslewood, Trejan Bridges haul from Oklahoma last year but Ohio State appears to have the best chance so far in 2020.

When you go to 247 sports team rankings for recruiting, they are ordered by the composite rankings (which takes into account 247 sports own rankings, rivals, espn,etc.). Then they have a smaller box on the left which indicates the ranking for 247 sports own rankings.

I’m hoping that Paige holds off on making a decision until late in the process.  I’m a little worried that we may not hold on to Knighton (I know, I’m assuming he’s in).   If he flips to Miami or wherever, we could switch Martinez back to offense and have Paige fill his spot at Safety.

This is just the game and how it’s being played these days jus like blaming JB on the 5* running back. Raleigh, I agree it's a stretch to blame jbook, but it was mistake for him to describe Milton's post-OSU visits elsewhere as practically just a formality. A lot of these kids dislike it when recruiting writers take a player's commitment for granted long before he's ready to announce. Again, not jbook's fault, but still a bit presumptuous the way he wrote about it.

Edit: Good point about the different response to Kipp Adams.

So Jaylan Knight on on the 31st, Bijan Robinson on the 2nd, Kourt Williams sometime before the season starts, then the only players we are really watching are Dlineman, if numbers can work a second QB and Ricks/maybe another corner right? Did 247 set a date for the new player rankings? I’m really looking forward to seeing how much it bumps Gee Scott, Lathan Ransom, and some of our three stars.

HS
Independence Village 22's picture

Going out on a limb. Prepare to be underwhelmed. If those dudes had that performance and we either committed or favoring Bama, Georgia or a couple of other schools they would be top 20ish 5* locks. Ive seen this rodeo a few times to not get my hopes up. I could actually see Fleming drop to a high 4* and us finish with 4 high 4* WR's. Id love to be wrong and pleasantly surprised. Gee Scott not being a 5* is criminal. Especially since a few folks thought he looked more polished then Fleming.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

Fleming was basically the consensus top WR at the Opening. He could actually rise a couple spots before this is all done. No chance he falls out of 5* territory. Scott will end up at least near 5* territory - and I'm fine with that. Some people won't be happy if he's not a top 15 player. WR is loaded this year and if Gee ends up being a top 40 player I'm not going to complain about that. 247 articles made it pretty clear he's getting a bump but there is disagreement between staff members about whether that bump should be all the way to a 5*.

HS
BABuckeye's picture

When a player moves up, other slide down to make room. I expect a few bumps, a few dips, and a similar overall score.

HS
Brandon26841's picture

Why does this seem like such a common thought around here?

If anything dudes always get a huge boost JUST from committing to OSU. They didn't magically get better as players. Evaluators didn't watch more film suddenly (well... maybe). They get bumped just because they were apparently good enough that OSU took them. It goes that way more than anything else. I've seen so many people say "they dropped them in the rankings only because they committed to OSU"... huh?

Either way, it doesn't really matter.

HS
logamaniac's picture

Maybe throughout the majority of the process a recruit improves his ranking based on his offer sheet, however as the well of non-committed recruits dries up its in each company’s business interest to inflate some rankings to generate clicks.

HS
Stellar's picture

Every fan base thinks this way.  They think everyone is against him.  If one of our commits drops in the rankings it's because the media is against us.  But if one of our commits rises it's because they were obviously good the whole time but the media is dumb.

HS

As this 2020 class appears to be finishing at the Top 5 nationally, I think I'm am starting to have more faith in Day and his ability to become an elite head coach. He showed no mercy by changing the defensive staff, fought to get Justin Fields in, and has shown how well he can recruit - this all reveals to me that much of a hard worker Day is. I think this level of effort will translate to how serious he takes his coaching and in-game decision making.

Size doesn't necessarily matter if you want it hard enough.

I forget who said it,  but I think it was someone on a podcast who stated that they wouldn’t be surprised if Day ended up being a better recruiter than Meyer. Citing his younger age, NFL experience and his offense. We won’t be able to compare Meyer and Day in recruiting off of just 1 recruiting cycle,  but this clas very well could finish as a top 3 class with 10 top 100 players. For Day to have that class almost rapped up without even coaching a game is unprecedented and extremely exciting

Have we always been a dynasty ?

HS
buckslan's picture

I don't know if Day will be a better recruiter than Meyer, he lived for recruiting and loved it. But I do think without a doubt that Day will be a better coach than Meyer. I have a lot more confidence in Day and who he is choosing to be his assistants, how he's running his defense and offense, more than I had in Meyer. I know it sounds crazy because Urban has had success at all 4 places he's been a head coach, but Day is going to be a seriously good head coach starting this year.

HS
Reuben's picture

Meyer was good at assembling initial staffs. The trouble came when he had to replace a hotshot coordinator who left. (Mullen at Florida, Herman at OSU.)

HS
stxbuck's picture

Maybe, just maybe, Coach Day is proof that leveraging tOSU's historic brand in recruiting, through on field success and off field integrity is just as, if not vastly more, important than "Oooooh, Urban is the greatest recruiter ever!!! He's the difference!!!".

HS
JarheadBuck's picture

That's what you think huh.  Hmm.

3 Nattys.  12-3 in bowls.  7 Conf. Championships.  85.4% Winning percentage over his entire career (90.3% Winning Percentage here).

And you think "without a doubt" Day will be a better coach.  Yep, it sounds crazy because Urban is a proven all-time great and Day hasn't coached a game as the head of any program yet.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Being a better on field coach and winning NCs are not the same thing, necessarily. Mark Dantonio or Chris Peterson-Washington-could coach circles around Jimbo Fisher or Mack Brown, but those two have NCs, Dantonio and Peterson don't, and likely won't. Urban wasn't the greatest in-game strategist out there by a long shot.

HS
JarheadBuck's picture

Urban compiled his record getting lucky "on the field" (in-game coaching) for 15 years.  Got it.

Clearly, the new guy who has never run had this kind of job and never been the head guy at any level will be head and shoulders better than Urban.  Obviously.  What was I thinking?  smfh

HS
stxbuck's picture

Yes, I think Day is likely a better game manager/x’s and o’s guy than Urban. Tressel was definitely better than Urban in that regard. Heck, Woody, who was and always will be the greatest coach in tOSU history,    was hardly known as an in game genius.

HS
Louie1131's picture

"Without a doubt"......... This is too weak of a statement. I mean, he has coached 3 games (2 of which against the 2 worst teams in college football) so its ridiculously easy to project how his career will turn out. I think that Ryan Day is without a doubt the best coach in the history of college football. No, all football, at every level, in every division, ever, also in every sport.

UFM is statistically the best coach in OSU history. Pump the breaks and/or wipe the smudges off those scarlet-tinted glasses.

I wish the real world would just stop hassling me...

HS
logamaniac's picture

he has the best winning percentage in OSU history, qualifying it as statistically best would be wrong as you would interpret data sets differently.

Example, Widdoes has an 89% win percentage and didnt have the advantage of scheduling Hawaii, directional Michigans, directional Illinois, Tulsa, BGSU, UNLV, Tulane, Kent State, Buffalo, FA&M, UCF, UAB, MofOH to name a few.

Per an athletic article after we offered Gee, Washington coaches visited his school and sat down with all their top athletes except for Gee.

"Buckeyes receiver coach Brian Hartline identified Scott — who stars at powerhouse Eastside Catholic in suburban Sammamish — as a top-tier 2020 wide receiver more than a year ago, and Ohio State offered Scott a scholarship during an unofficial visit to Columbus in October. Soon after, a time during which Scott’s recruitment was about to explode, Washington’s coaches visited Eastside Catholic and sat down with every top athlete on the team except for Scott.

Why? Nobody knows for sure, though that decision could wind up haunting Chris Petersen and his staff for the next three or four years. It would have taken a two-minute visit — even if the Huskies’ staff wasn’t sure about offering yet — to alter Scott’s thinking. Instead, Scott went home that day in November, looked his father in the eye and said, “I’m going to Ohio State. They believe in me"

Thank god we did hire someone who reached out to Taylor since he wanted to be a Buckeye in the first place.

One thing about Day is while he's a first year coach he's not shown that level of incompetence in anything he's done. That's embarrassing for Peterson.

HS
Knarcisi's picture

Had to be a complete oversight from their staff. A really big one.

HS
Alex Ranttila's picture

Impossible. When you talk to a coach at a powerhouse school with a lot of talent, you ask them who you should be looking at. They will give you the names.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

There has to be something more to it, but I doubt we will ever know what that was. I mean I love Hartline but he didn't exactly identify Scott out of obscurity. The kid has been ranked as a high 4* prospect long before Hartline was the WR coach at Ohio State. It seems inexplicable that the UW coaches didn't talk to a kid in their own backyard who has been a top 100 ranked player for a couple of years now. Notre Dame offered him almost two years ago too. It's a strange story.

HS
stxbuck's picture

It is kind of odd, but I imagine Peterson got some kind of pre-emptive negative vibe. Why? Who knows, but Peterson is known to be a tad quirky in recruiting.

Sa’vell Smalls is also completely on the outs w/ the Dawgs.

HS

That just seems absolutely bizarre and hard to believe.  I mean, in some areas there's a ton of talent (TX, FL, CA etc), and some schools can be picky and decide to pass on a guy they think is marginal.  This is Washington we're talking about.  How many times are they going to have a 4 or 5 star guy right in their back yard?  Sometimes talented home town players just "get away" because for whatever reason they decide a different place is a better fit for them.....   but to completely ignore a top 4 or 5 star in your back yard when you're in an area with a relatively small talent pool?  Just nuts.

Whatever the backstory, whatever the reason, I'm glad we were able to bring in a talented and (by all accounts) highly motivated young man.  Can't go wrong there.

Embedded in the comments section of the article are some nuggets from UW fans (yes, they exist). Short version: there were rumors floating in the Washington high school circles about an off the field incident with a classmate (not described). But the fans commenting noted that they did not believe the rumors, and that their last WR coach was terrible. Basically these fans think that because the rumors were close to home, UW blinked and didn’t offer quickly, while teams not right there wouldn’t have been aware of the rumors. And given that UW ultimately did offer, it’s clear that whatever intel they gathered showed the rumors weren’t legit. Two fans in the comments section seem aware of the specific rumor and both refused to spell it out bc they don’t believe it.

Yep, stupid move for anyone to burn bridges, what he gets homesick and wants to move closer or decides to transfer for some other reason?
