That kinda stinks, because I am in no way going to root for the Warriors.
To me, this would be like Joe B. transferring to Clemson. I can easily root for LSU, but my dislike runs too deep to overcome the former scenario.
Get your money young fella but I don't know how he fits in with GSW? I mean GSW was bad defensively when healthy they'll be terrible and get outrebounded on a nightly bases as currently constructed.
At least before Klay comes back, agreed. I think he comes back near the end of the regular season as a tune-up for full/near-full playing time in the postseason. ACL is not the same as Achilles.
Warriors had no depth this year. Their bench use to roll in and destroy people. Then dudes like Livingston got old and Iggy got all beat up. I imagine you let DLo run the second unit and be the instant offense guy off the bench.
And say they keep Cousins... you can go small and SERIOUSLY space the floor with Cousins, Green, Steph, DLo and Klay (early next year at some point.)
If Kawhi goes to the Lakers it will be a matchup nightmare.. but if it's just AD and LeBron Warriors would still have enough on defense to hang with and beat the Lakers..
I just saw that Iggy got traded to the Grizzlies. That’s surprising.
I think Cousins will find more money elsewhere.
Edit: just read that Iggy will be bought out in Memphis and is expected to join the Lakers.
Fields of Dreams
You don't give someone a max contract to "run the second unit".
Klay and or Curry aren't going to the bench and Kerr isn't running three guards. DLo will come off the bench and be a lock for 6th man of the year... they'll go 3 guard looks at points in the game but they aren't going to reinvent the wheel out there. Once Klay is healthy he's starting and same for Curry.. DLo to the bench..
And DLo isn't making "max" guard money. He's coming off his rookie deal so it's still only $28M for max for him. Klay, Curry, Lilliard, Irving etc making $40M +.... Sixers just paid Horford $25M to come off the bench... Mid 20M is sixth man money these days..
Kerr likes small ball lineups so I think it’s realistic that when Klay gets back they will all be on floor together. And like you said 28 mill is his max because of the number of years he’s played. Can’t compare what he’s making to Klay or steph. If LeBron was coming off his rookie deal he’d be making the same. I’m sure he’d still be starting. So I think DLo will still start no matter who they have. Plus Horford isn’t coming off the bench either. Teams are playing positionless basketball now
My thoughts exactly, Goon. Did the Warriors just pay max money for Russell to come off the bench? Would they play three guards at the same time? This doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.
Edit: I found this article where they stated concern about plugging in Russell with Klay and Curry already in place.
Klay is the same height as Kawhi (6'7") hes a big guard.
Really shocked by this. Russell just doesn't seem to be a fit for them and no way will I root for the Warriors to win. The money is too good to pass up, for sure, and perhaps the Nets couldn't find a better suitor for him.
Still rooting for you... to kick some of your new teammates in the balls. Get paid and keep improving to get that next max contract.
Great to see him getting paid and going to a team that he can win a championship with. Many players no matter how good or how long they play will get that opportunity. I have to think he is very excited about this and the Warriors are expecting he'll play well for them.
Heck yeah! I liked watching the Warriors before, now I can finally say I'm a fan!
Great fit IMO. Should be the primary ball handler in a lot of situations with Klay and Steph waiting for a catch and shoot on the perimeter.
Well that's depressing. One of my favorite NBA players goes to my absolute least favorite team.
As long D-Lo doesn't start throwing mouthpieces and kicking people in the nuts I guess I can still find a way to root for him individually.
"Because I couldn't go for 3."
or acting like he did when he was with the Lakers when his teammates hated him.
You mean that complete dysfunctional pile of crap that was the Lakers when he was there? Yeah, that is a great gauge of judgement about who likes who and why.

Replacement for Thompson?
"Come on, you sons of b!tches! Do you want to live forever?" -- Dan Daly, WWI
Thompson signed a max 5-year deal. He'll retire a Warrior.
ahh. I didnt see that. Thanks.
The assumption is that Thompson will sign a max deal with the Warriors, but that has not happened yet. Just looked again for confirmation of the signing and there's nothing confirming it.
I'm sure it's a lock, I just haven't seen it confirmed yet. But yeah, this deal for Russell looks to be plugging Russell into one of the starting guard spots for next season. Beyond that, if they have Klay, Curry AND Russell, I don't see how that will work, long term.
“The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” – Theodore Roosevelt
I think they might flip him to Minny.
bro got the MAX
Really surprised at this move. When Thompson comes back they will have a max player running the second team? Wow.
I wonder if this means the Lakers are really confident in getting Kawhi.
Great money for DLo but not a great situation IMO. He had a great year in NJ and really enjoyed playing there. Now he’s the 4th best player on a team that’s already had great chemistry and success. Going to be hard to fit in personality wise with Draymond as well. Even KD said no thanks and bounced. Lol
In the words of Boogie Cousins: "Fuck Golden State!"
Guessing they use him until Klay comes back and then trade him for another piece. Sucks to see him get bounced around. Would rather have seen him go to the Lakers where he could be on TV as much and have a meaningful role for a longer period of time.

Take Your Pick
I think Russell is a pretty good fit. Shot 42% from 3 last season, can handle the ball, good in the pick and roll. Big help while Thompson is hurt.
Screw the Lakers...
Wouldn't want him on the Lakers anyway, would be a problem child as the their third wheel. Amazing how much cash players are pulling down, a one year wonder or maturing player and 30 Million a year. wow. Might move Clay to SF position when or if he comes back healthy, can't imagine a 30 million dollar pickup being a backup.
I don't follow the NBA.
But will say I'm happy for Russell, no question it's a great spot for him...not to mention it reaffirms (to me) how stupid the Lakers were to deal him away a few years ago.
Got M...igan gossip? Bang it here.
They had to use him to get rid of a stupid contract that was hamstringing them, he was the icing required. He was also a bit of a jerk to teammates and in the locker room. Now that he's found MJ he seems to be more mature.
Crap. Now I have to root for Golden State??
If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.
The Warriors and Lakers are locked in a fierce battle to see which team can have the least depth in NBA history. If GS re-signs Draymond next summer, they are going to be paying so much tax for a declining team that has no chance of competing for championships.
This move does help give them a chance to have a win total in the mid to high 40s next year while Klay rehabs, but man.....Steph, D-Lo, and Dray will be incredibly worn out trying to get them there.
I just read a report (I believe it was Marc Stein) that stated they were not in on him for the long haul. They plan to flip him for assets, as they are strapped for money and want to build a bench to work for now as will as pick up some draft picks for the future of the franchise.
And Toledo still sucks.
Just read the same thing. Makes more sense. Rather than lose KD for nothing, they acquire a trade chip and two decent roll players. Russell will no doubt be moved prior to the trade deadline, if he ever suited up for GSW.
