It’s a new Day!!!!
The mark of excellence, the test of greatness, is consistency
Don’t overlook ANYONE this year.
But win those two and you likely have ANOTHER major test the following week. B1G scheduling is lopsidedly ridiculous.
Will the B1G really be decided in this stretch? That presupposes TTUN and PSU will not have multiple losses at that point. Some might consider that position a bit bold ...
"The minute we stop expecting greatness, we become Wisconsin."
Agreed x100. The PSU game is going to look way less intimidating after they rack up 3-4 losses before playing us.
Not really bold considering the last few years. PSU and TTUN have been our strongest competition when it comes to winning the B1G East.
Yes, I know we thumped the wolverines last year, but that game was played between 2 7-1 Eastern Conf foes.
“The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” – Theodore Roosevelt
You cant just pick 2 schools without understanding the year over year roster changes. Think of it this way....
-Last years PSU team would beat this years PSU team 55-3.
-Last years TTUN team would beat this years TTUN team 28-7.
Not true about Michigan
Not according to the many experts around the country who believe that UM returning multiple very average players from the previous season means they will make the playoffs
It's easy to be tough in the first five weeks of the season.
Be a monster during the last 3 weeks, and go into the post season with destruction on your mind.
Be a monster when it's freezing and snowing outside and show the SEC what monsters can do.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Perhaps I am desperate for the season to start and feel that feeling again, but your post makes me want to run through a brick wall!
I was channeling my inner-Pacino with that one, "THAT'S WHAT LIVIN IS! THAT SIX INCHES IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE!"
It just blows my mind why someone at the B1G would make the conferences marquee program with the best odds to make the playoff play its two toughest opponents back to back to end the year. Its like they're trying to get left out of the playoffs again. We've already got the deck stacked against us, no need to make it even harder.
There seems to be a stink floating around sad valley these days. Something tells me that the Penn St game wont be as "marquee" as recent years.
I mean, it's not really realistic to argue that Ohio State should get special treatment on the schedule when almost every team in the conference could make a similar argument about a murderous stretch - Penn State has Michigan followed by a trip to Sparty; Michigan State has a trip to Columbus immediately followed by a game at Camp Randall then immediately followed by the aforementioned Penn State trip; Iowa (a top-20 team in their own right) has a trip to Ann Arbor followed by a visit from Penn State.
The entire B1G ethos is driven by the "one for all, all for one" kind of equality - Ohio State and Michigan and Penn State are treated equally with each other and also equally to the likes of Minnesota and Indiana. That's the whole reason why Nebraska and Missouri fled the Big 12 to get away from Texas and also why the Big Ten continues to grow and be stable. The idea that "oh well, the conference should intentionally stack the deck for some teams at the expense of others" ignores the reality of how the Big Ten operates.
If the PSU game is anything like the 2017 game (or last year's for that matter) and it drains the hell out of us I legitimately will be worried about the TTUN game. A sound beating of the Elite Franklins would be in Ryan Day's best interest for sure.
"You're the patron saint of the totally effed" - Hot Tub Time Machine
Chase Young really does look like a man amongst boys in that picture. Just an absolute beast.
Should be a must-read for those pundits out there criticizing Ohio State's soft non-conf schedule.
You won't see Alabama scheduling LSU right before Auburn, Georgia taking on Florida before Georgia Tech, Florida taking on Georgia before Florida State, Clemson taking on anyone of substance (ACC or otherwise) before tangling with South Carolina, and so on.
Schedule quirk or no, Ohio State will have to earn it game by game.
I had to run away high, so I wouldn't come home low...
really, when SC is being referenced as a "big" game for clemson - that is very telling itself.
Just once, I want to see a ranked SEC team tumble 3-5 spots after chickensh*t Saturday. I get they'll likely make it up the next week, but that would go a long way toward emphasis on strength of schedule.
Agreed. Not only should chickensh*t Saturday result in a lack of "data points" in the committee's evaluation process - in my opinion it should result in an automatic drop in the standings for those teams.
After all, it's not even close to a fair comparison. Alabama and the likes get to have what amounts to a glorified scrimmage with some FCS patsy the week before rivalry weekend - but we have to play Penn State.
If the committee started to penalize those programs for this behavior - even slightly - we'd see a change -
Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement. - Will Rogers
Need to play Nov like March Madness...it is a single elimination tournament. Lose to msu, psu or ttun and no natty. No such thing as an off Saturday now. Be healthy, be ready and kick some a$$.
ttun 2019 offense...same pig, different lipstick.
Worry about the 10 games before the final two er three er four er five ...
ok, how about one game at a time, cliché's notwithstanding. btw, an improved defense would be nice.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. ~ Mark Twain
Worry about the 10 games before the final two er three er four er five ...
Given that the reason Ohio State missed the last two Playoffs had nothing to do with the big games and everything to do with no-showing in cross-division games, this is pretty sound advice.
My $0.02, while OSU is head and shoulders above UM and PSU (I'll throw MSU in there, too) talent-wise, it'll come down to what team can withstand injuries the best. I like OSU's depth and experience everywhere but the most critical position on the field.
agreed. fields doesn't play as advertised or if they decide to run him 20+ times a game until he's hurt - it'll be a long season for the buckeyes.
God bless Urban Meyer, but I don’t see anyone in THIS offensive brain trust running Fields like Urban ran Braxton or JT. I hope Fields only runs if the play goes to sh*t, or on a QB sneak from the 1 for a TD.
The road to a Natty from mid-November on....
B10 Championship Game
PSU, ... one week later,
Our rival, ... one week later,
Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, or Northwestern for the B1G championship, ... three weeks later
Alabama/Clemson for the Fiesta or Peach Bowl championship, ... two weeks later,
Clemson/Alabama for the 2019 national championship!
I get it.. I really do.. But does anyone really think PSU and scUM are better than the boys just because Urban retired?? LOL bring it. I hope the guys are underdogs in every big match up..
Pigskins & Porkrinds
I agree with the senator. They remember what you did in November.
I believe MANY of these games will be difficult and that we will see if our guys can rise to the occasion on several Saturdays! I believe THIS is where Day and Hafley bring the most value - they came from the NFL instead of a few games circled on the schedule they faced opponents with roughly equal talent EVERY week - Wake up - begin to grind, Go Bucks!
I also believe that is where are recruiting can pay the biggest dividends - we have better ones than most everyone in our conference yet we have FAR superior TWOS and with solid leads are coaching staff can use the depth that Urban stock piled yet often ignored!
I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
It sounds very tough...however, I have this feeling that PSU isn't going to be that great this season. Maybe 7 or 8 wins, but they certainly won't be the teams of the past three years that either beat or almost beat the Buckeyes.
Class of 2010.
We had PSU at home and then scUM on the road in the ball sucking 2011 season and went 0-2 against them, with a first year head coach.
I pray to Woody that history doesn’t repeat
I don't see that debacle repeating itself. 2011 was a hot mess with an interim coach and the Tatgate crap hanging over the program. Barring injury to key players, I feel safe in saying 2019 will have a much better outcome.
If the Buckeyes are in a position to run the table at the end of the year to be in the top four, why not look at it as a five game playoff beginning with PSU.
“Being average means you are as close to the bottom as you are to the top.” John Wooden
Valid point about the struggles the week before The Game...but, Buckeyes still beat ttun each time.
I saw a UFO once.......it told me to have a goodyear!
In 2020 we also end with PSU (on the road) and TTUN at home. Far cry from how Auburn and Alabama play leading up to their big game.
Bucks fans in Mass
Urban used to prepare for months for TTUN. Now Day has to prepare months before the two-week gauntlet. I'm confident that he can read the schedule. :)
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
Most worried about:
1. Nebraska (early road game, really, really, fired up home crowd)
2. itch again
3-15. Everybody else
PSU usually takes a lot out of them and makes it difficult to win the next week.
We really need to schedule a chicken shit game with a mid-tier FCS school the second to last game. But who does that?
Varys: I've always hated the bells. They ring for horror, a dead king, a city under siege.
Tyrion: A wedding.
Here is the problem for PSU and TTUN this year.....BOTH rosters are worse this year than last year, while the Buckeyes roster has improved year over year.
I have PSU losing 5 games this year. Too many losses.
TTUN has lost alot on defense and is anyone really a Shea Patterson fan?
NFL thinks Shea is the real deal
Not trying to kick any hornets nests, but why do you think the PSU roster is worse this year? Most PSU fans would argue the only position that is really a question mark is QB, yes that is the most crucial but almost every other spot we have a higher rated player coming in or a veteran returning.
We should be head and shoulders above both teams, but they also both make me nervous every damned year, no matter what. Here's what I would love: for both of those teams to over-perform expectations, come in undefeated or one-loss, and then get absolutely crushed by us en route to a the playoffs. I want that momentum of the last national championship season, where we were nervous about how we were going to do (justifiably!) and then rolled through the end of the season on a wave of pure magic.
