With nothing to base it on, maybe incomplete or TBD might be a better option.

Or at least group every first time guy from like 125-128 and add a disclaimer that they’ll shoot up in next years list depending on results.
A lot of people are playing a wait and see approach with Day, it makes sense. I do LOL at the folks who think Ryan Day is going to be a bust. Some even think he's not HC material. I hope he not only proves everyone wrong but thumps their freaking asses along the way.
"I find your lack of kalua disturbing" - Darth Lebowski
Can’t wait for the raging disappointment from the haters.
Kirk Ferentz and his B1G COTY trophy case would like a word with you.
No idea what this means, but any reference to Ferentz and his COTYs gets an upvote.
Hope Day never wins it because if he did, it would mean an overachieving 8-4 season.
You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!
I would actually argue that keeping the ship afloat last year already makes Day better than half of the current Power 5 coaches. I’m positive he will show his worth this upcoming season.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
Funny thing is if we were talking about Alabama and maybe a few other elite schools who have rarely stumbled in their hirings and kept their teams pretty elite (like Oklahoma) their choice to replace a legend coach would automatically get the new hire ranked at least in the top 15. These guys doing the rankings should have considered that other than a handful of current coaches Ohio State had their pick of who they wanted to be head coach and they ended up picking Day.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
Any list that puts James Franklin at the or anywhere near the top of it as the BEST is irrelevant...that is all.
Or Hairball... both are overrated IMHO.
I don't understand the need to rank a coach who really hasn't been a head coach. It's like doing an employee performance evaluation before the employee has done the job. What's next - giving merit pay raises based on predicted performance? Yeah, I get it - it derives from the same impulse that gives us pre-season team rankings, pre-season all-americans, etc. It's ridiculous. Play the games first, and then rank whatever you want.
Now get off my lawn.
I agree 100%, but then it is the offseason for the pundits, too!
Wife of pundit: "Welcome home honey...how many clicks did you get today?"
I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.
Pundit: “Of the pictures I used of you, less than 10, single digits. As for the completely useless ranking system for the dead time to write about college football, thousands because I pissed off the Ohio State fan base. Easy money...”

When does fall practice start.................... Can't be soon enough.
I wonder where Brent Venables would rank if he took a head coaching job, whether taking the reigns from Dabo or going elsewhere?
He's got more cache on a college level than Day, but they're comps to a degree. Still, I'm guessing Venables would instantly appear on most top ten lists.
To me, a far more interesting (and telling) list--one the sports writers probably should have put together--would have been a ranking of coaches in the order that they would likely be hired if they were available to any given school.
I'm not sure if Day would have made the top ten of such a list, bit in reality, I'm pretty sure he'd be a top candidate--and he sure as heck wouldn't be the 45th or 62nd coach on any Athletic Director's list.
I wonder if these same national pundits will give Coach Day credit for winning by his coaching rather than saying "he's winning with Urban Meyer's players".
But of course that will be the narrative. Would be interested to know where Jeremy Pruitt is ranked. Or my personal favorite, Will Muschamp (sarcasm font on.)
If Ryan Day isn't a top 5 coach in college football then he shouldn't be the head man at OSU. Given the fact Urban gave him two thumbs up when Gene asked, is good enough for me.
Rank Coach Day wherever. What really matters is where the TEAM is ranked at the end of the season. Coach Day will get his due a few years down the line.
“Being average means you are as close to the bottom as you are to the top.” John Wooden
When ranking Day myself I’d put him anywhere in between 62 through 39, no real reasoning behind this ranking though. Just an arbitrary number
I am a Michigan booster bud....just spent $182 bucks at Wal-Mart this morning.
LOL! That would put him well above Hairball!
Well played AKBuck ;)

Really do not care how they rank coaches. The proof is in the pudding and Day's pudding is just cooling.
The proof is in the pudding
and Ryan Day will be pudding his foot up Harbaugh’s ass.
Ryan Day will win 2 Natty's in his first 6 years at OSU.
He'll be no.1 very soon
Ryan Day the goat....and yes I pee on ttun all the time.
I love when people feel the need to publish ranked lists, then also try and go with a wait-and-see approach. If we're waiting and seeing, it’s pointless to make the list in the first place. Sack up and rank him, or find something else to make a list about.
It's called content, without content you are without clicks. Without clicks you are without money and soon without a business. It's a business, Mr. Beale! If you remember that all things become crystal clear.
Opinions are like certain body parts that everybody has.
And until we get to see a full season of Ryan Day, that's all any sportswriters have to go on.
I do remember when Jim Tressel was hired. Nobody knew what to expect, and a few games into that first year when he was 4-3 I was thinking maybe he wasn't that good. But then on November 24, 2001 he took his team into that state up north and beat the #11 Wolverines 26-20. And I knew he was a great hire.
So perhaps the sportswriters should hold off for a while on the rankings.
Success - it's what you do with what you've got. - Woody Hayes
He is 3-0 as the guy, but really they should not have him on these lists yet. He needs at least a full season or two to figure out where he goes in the grand scheme of things. I imagine he should be pretty high when things are done but he needs to prove that. If he gets a national title at some point than that will help him jump even higher.
Have to see how the year goes before getting too excited though. I think he is going to be good. Having the talent at OSU helps too.
Coach Day goes 13-0 and wins conference championship.
Kirk Ferentz goes 8-4 and wins B1G COY.
Called it here first!
As far as everyone mocking Ferentz, how was the last game between he and Meyer?

“Save yourself and relax during every game. I recommend a fine bourbon.”
Fair enough. I finally erased it from my DVR memory.
I definitely understand the quandary with ranking Day, but next offseason will have him in the top 10 for sure.
Wait, could Day be a solid candidate for the ever coveted coach of the year award?! Ferentz must.be shaking in his boots!
Nah, I didn't think so either.
"I spent 90 percent of my money on women and drink. The rest I wasted." - George Best
This is the situation where if Day has a very good year that BIG COTY trophy should be his without ? That is right, the Buckeyes will have the COTY after having had coaches with so many opportunities and they just couldn't get it done the last 20 years .... finally we'll have one that breaks through and brings that trophy that signifies so much back to Columbus where it has been missing do to our unfortunate coaching situation...
sarc game skrong with this one
As was the case with Finkell, inheriting a loaded team like OSU puts a Day in a precarious position. He should win big but if he doesn’t, he will not be tolerated.
Not sure the Fickell situation was comparable. If I recall, he was always going to be temporary unless he somehow managed to win the national championship. By the time it became clear he wasn’t, and Urban’s hat was in the ring, his days were numbered.
Day, I feel, has a full contract and likely between 1-3 years to prove himself. Don’t think there’s another Urban lurking out there to scoop him.
A far more interesting question is prognosticating where he will rank after this season. Top five is my guess.
If I had $1 for everytime someone said Fickell went 6-7 after Tress left...
That team had it's stud QB, leading rusher, second-leading receiver and starting LT suspended for the first 5 games.
This team has Justin Fields and not a guy who wouldn't have even started at Rutgers, followed up by a Freshman running-QB not ready to play.
Gotta love the naysayers. They told us last year at this time Dwayne Haskins could never be as productive as JT Barrett or Tate Martell. I recall to when Urban first got hired at tOSU, we were told that Urban was washed up with serious health concerns and he wasnt able to do the job effectively.
Well, let me tell you something.... This is THE Ohio State University. And Ohio State Football has been and will always be bigger than 1 person or a few people. So get over it and realize that this school continues to recruit top 3 nationally based on stars ranking (screw the # of scholys) for 7 years running now.
-Bama 2019: 27 scholys, 2018: 20 scholys, 2017: 29 scholys, 2016: 24 scholys = 148 TOTAL
-tOSU 2019: 17 scholys 2018: 26 scholys 2017: 21 scholys 2016: 25 = 89 TOTAL
Can anyone tell me why Bama is allowed to offer 67% or 59 more scholys over tOSU over 4 years? I knew the SEC is allowed to oversign because their students flunk out at higher rates, but come on, that amount is crazy!!!!
BH7, your math appears to be slightly off. Based on the numbers you show by year, Bama's total is 100, not 148. Still more than tOSU, but not as big as you state. I agree though that tOSU ranks right up there with anyone based on average ranking, not totals.
Yes, Buckeyes always been top 3. Its always Bama and Buckeyes. Then Clemson or GA or OK.
Let's talk about this in February 2020.
