Not to be a Debbie Downer but anyone notice for all our shit talking about average player ranking vs Michigan. Ours has gone down since last week and theirs actually went up..

We're still way ahead but if we don't get more of those elite recruits and quick our class quality isn't going to be increase over them and that's the important metric.

The kid was being recruited by Notre Dame and Michigan, also. It's not like they were battling MAC teams to get him.

Tom Brady lost to John Cooper. Never forget.

HS
Snake64's picture

Ya but do we want to be leveling out to ND and Michigan? We just made fun of Michigan for having so many 3 stars in their commitments. They're at 10 and 10 for 3 and 4 stars. If we didn't have two 5 stars locked up we'd be right at their level 8-6. Just pointing out we're taking on more low level 3 stars than usual and that's not a good sign. The kid is a low level 3 star at 657 composite ranking. More commits like this and we'll be a hell of a lot closer to Michigan player ranking than Clemson Alabama or ND. We ain't trying to compete with Michigan we're dominating them. TIme to compete with Clemson and Alabama.

HS
KBonay's picture

Our average is 92.33 right now.  That would have been good for 3rd in last years averages, which is better than last year's class. It would have put us 5th in the 2018 class.  And 3rd in the 2017 class.

Perspective, dude.

Potential commits and their averages, if you want to stress about numbers....

Bijan- 98.99
Cooper 96.43
Ranson 96.25
Knighton 94.82
Williams 93.32

HS
Snake64's picture

Ya if we miss on those guys and have to stab at more low 3 stars that average comes down. Class averages tend to move down the more players are added. Especially if you miss on some of those players and have to pick up a lower guy and right now i can unfortunately see it happening.

HS
Woodshed's picture

And then osu would STILL have one of the highest player ranking averages in the nation.

usually when someone like you posts incessantly about the same thing over and over I go and check how long they’ve been on 11w. that’s usually a decent indicator about one’s experience following recruiting.

i think that’s very apparent in this case.

HS
Snake64's picture

I've been following recruiting for years. Just because i recently added myself as a contributor in the comment section doesn't take away my experience with recruiting.

HS
KBonay's picture

So if you follow recruiting for years, you should know that in a class of at least 25 this year, we are going to have some 3-stars.  It's a fact of life.  You fill depth and find positions (like O-line) that you can develop.  We also have the #1 kicker, that is actually hurting our average.  But you keep on beating that drum.

HS
Snake64's picture

That's fine i know 3 star players contribute and fill classes. My point was showing some of the hypocrisy on this site. It's all roses when OSU does it but if any other program fills a class with some 3 stars they're a joke and we snivel at them. I understand i laugh at what Michigan has going on right now too. Half their class is filled with 3 stars and they don't have anymore 4 stars to grab at really.

Pointing out the hypocrisy and all the trolls come out and downvote me into oblivion. Thanks for showing your true faces. someone hits you with a little truth and you get butthurt and downvote them cuz your feelings and team pride got hurt. damn guys i thought we were better than shit like this. This is the kind of chicken shit stuff PSU and Meatchicken fans do and we laugh at. Yet i come on here and constantly see us too and i'm like wow. We're just as annoying as the rest we just win more so it doesn't smell as bad.

HS

Oldschoolbuck's picture

Snake, Snake. I don’t know who DV’d you - I didn’t because a difference of opinion isn’t DV-worthy. I WILL say that many of the people DISAGREEING with you are long-time 11W members who have a history of reasoned, well thought-out comments. They are definitely NOT trolls.

There’s an old saying in the legal world: “If you have the facts, pound the facts; if you have the law, pound the law; if you have neither, pound the table.” You were pounding the table when you pulled the “troll” card.

BTW: Making fun of scUM is what we do.

HS
Snake64's picture

I get that making fun of TTUN is part of what we do. I've made fun of them multiple times here. It just looks stupid and makes us fans look as bad as any other when we're dogging other programs for 3 star commits and then celebrating them here. Like ugh what???

Secondly that was my point people here are simply DV me because i had a difference of opinion not that they are necessarily trolls. Like disagree with me fine but don't DV because i'm well aware that's not actually the purpose of this sites DV. Some people on this site even the old 11W members once they get mad or don't like something will simply DV on everything you say after that. it's like if someone doesn't constantly wear the scarlet and grey glasses they're a POS on here which is ridiculous.

And to the guy who said i'm not a fan because any fan would celebrate every commit with a boom 3 star or not is an idiot. I don't have to like every kid that commits to this program just because you feel that way. I'm allowed to have a difference of opinion. Unless you enjoy the dictatorial lifestyle. Have a good day.

Alabama has four 3-star commits in their 2020 class thus far.

Fields of Dreams

HS
Snake64's picture

They have 4.... and their class is all but finished. We already have 9 and likely to finish with 10-12. Half our class right now are 3 stars. You can't say that about Bama or Georgia or Clemson. We're in the lower half of the top 10 for 3 stars right now not much ahead of Michigan.

I'm just saying i saw so many fans laughing at Michigan for having half their class be 3 stars yet here we are and half our class is full of 3 stars. I get it we're in on some top 100 talent but we're far from guaranteed to get all 3 and yet we're settling to fill depth out with lower rated guys. i'm concerned about the future depth of the team. If this continues we will not be as loaded as we are right now.

HS
Bucks19's picture

That's just a dumb post Snake. Every battle isn't going to be a Bama / Clemson battle. Some kids don't want to go south therefore those schools aren't a factor.

SHEEEEESH! No wonder our fanbase looks bad at times,.

HS
Ohio1111's picture

I’m glad someone else is seeing what’s actually going on with recruiting. Most of these 3* recruits wouldn’t have even been offered under myer. Like the TE who just committed seconded best offer was airfoce. Are we really saying we’re proud we’re recruiting against airforce? I don’t mind recruiting 3* olineman who have a body and potential but when it comes to athletes and skilled defenders we are looking bad. Way to many blind osu fans who can’t see the truth.

HS
Woodshed's picture

An Air Force offer is better than mich, psu, and Wisconsin?

i recommend learning how to use 247's site before posting about it.

and what's "actually happening" in recruiting is that osu has the 4th ranked class and the 6th highest player rating average. Even including the "Air Force" TE commit they got.

please do better.

HS
Snake64's picture

That player rating keeps getting lower the more 3 stars we add though..

HS
erniefurgler's picture

Clemson & Bama have quite a few 3-stars on their commitment lists as well...they seem to be doing well for themselves

HS
Snake64's picture

I guess I apologize for holding OSU to a higher standard than FUCKING MICHIGAN AND ND. lol

HS
SuperFanBuck's picture

What’s your point snake?  We WILL finish with a higher class than both those teams and a clear difference in player average.  Just relax man.  It was apparent that our next 2-3 commits after Phillips were probably going to be 3* guys.  Now after Fryar we will finish with the bigger fish as they were deciding a bit later. Also remember a few of those guys you are referring too could move up to 4* status.

As someone said earlier, with a class in the mid 20’s you are going to sign some 3* players to fill depth and develop guys, it’s a fact of life.  That is not a bad thing as plenty of hidden gems rise to the surface and underrated guys become good players, it happens every single year.

HS
439LawDog's picture

You have to have faith that the coaching staff knows what they are doing and they can see the talent the hacks at the recruiting sites can't or don't see. I just did a quick check of tOSU history on Rivals....Denzel Ward, Malik Hooker, Tuf Borland, Chris Olave, Sam Hubbard...all 3 star ratings. I would take any of those players again.

HS
Oldschoolbuck's picture

I hear what Snake is saying (& frankly, expected the Debby Downers to comment on these guys that are 3 stars). Can you spell D.E.V.E.L.O.P.M.E.N.T.?

Something that WE do significantly better than the Weasels.

HS
THEGAME513's picture

No he/she can't spell D.E.V.E.L.O.P.M.E.N.T., or anything for that matter because that would imply intelligence which clearly there isn't any.

Some three star Debbie Downer picks in recent years:

Malik Hooker 0.8858 rating 360 overall ranking in 2014

Darron Lee  0.8595 rating 636 overall ranking in 2013

Michael Thomas 0.8477 rating 765 overall ranking in 2011

Trust in the Coaches. The current .9233 overall team rating would rank 4th in the last 10 years of OSU teams. In only 1 year from 2011 (when Urban took over) to 2016 was Urban's class ranked higher than Day's current class. There are several crystal balls on the board for OSU that will almost certainly raise the overall team rating over the current score. Next year's class is off to a Roaring start. Relax, and Enjoy ... unless you are a MeatChicken fan. Then suffer.

HS
FortMeyer's picture

They believe this is just a fairy tale. Never happened. Maybe one day they will get it.

HS
Snake64's picture

Just because i'm not high on us picking up more low 3 stars lately and bringing our player average down from what it was 2 weeks ago does not make me a "meatchicken fan".

Realistically we might get 3 of the 5 on that list and i don't see Bijan being one of them. So if this is a class with 25 recruits and we're at 16 now. Where does the staff turn to late in the cycle? 3 more high level kids puts us at 19 but leaves 6 more spots to be realistically 3 stars or real low 4 stars.

My perspective is that the class has been sliding a little bit and i dont want us to slide more towards Michigan level i want and expect it to be with Bama and Clemson is all.

HS
JackIsWayBetterThanTiger's picture

You want to be more like Clemson?

2014 average rating 0.8869 16th nationally

2015 0.8912 avg. rating 9th nationally

2016 0.9030 avg. 11th nationally

2017 0.9210 16th nationally

2018 0.9345 7th nationally

2019 0.8976 10th nationally

Given what's on the Bucks board, it is highly unlikely that OSU will go South from the current avg. rating, but even if Day does go a bit South, he would be more "like Clemson", right?

HS
B1Gbuckeye's picture

We’re doing basically what Clemson has done. Take elite 4 and 5 star guys, and then develop the 3 stars guys.

HS
JJBuckeye's picture

Snake, this is coach Day’s first recruiting class following Urban’s departure. I think he has done an excellent job of recruiting. I actually thought there would be more of a drop of due to recruits wanting to see how his first season will go under his helm. If we have a great year I believe we will be right up there with Clemson, Bama, etc. The goal this year is to get the best recruiting class as possible in the Big Ten and have a great season and Ryan Day’ era will be special to watch. Go Bucks

HS
Smitty516's picture

Keep in mind we pretty much passed on Jahiem Thomas, that is currently rated higher, an Ohio kid and teammates with 2 other major recruits. The staff feels good about this kid, so I’ll trust their judgment here with Melton.

HS
TraSmith4's picture

From what I hear it's not that we have passed on Thomas. Sounds like we just want him as a DE but he wants to play LB. Things could change between now and signing day.

I'm not big on ratings but it seems interesting that all of a sudden we seem to have more three star booms than 4 or 5 star ones since Urban left (although actual commit count may say otherwise). Regression to the mean or diamonds in the rough or Day needs to prove himself more to get into Urban-like scenarios to close high end recruits?

I am just going to leave this here for you Snake.  From Birm, I guy I trust in regards to Ohio State recruiting.

Ohio State recruiting rankings: Why they don’t matter

On Tuesday night, 3-star tight end Joe Royer committed to Ohio State. Wednesday morning saw the addition of 3-star linebacker Mitchell Melton. On Thursday, it’s believed that Josh Fryar, a 3-star lineman will follow up and do the same. Ohio State is also hot on the trail of Michigan 3-star athlete Cameron Martinez, and it already has commitments from 3-star linemen Jakob James and Trey Leroux and 3-star defensive lineman Ty Hamilton.

For star-chasers out there, that is concerning. For those inside of the Ohio State program, those players are valuable pieces of a group that is currently ranked as the country’s fourth-best 2020 recruiting class.

Personally, I’d recommend sharing the opinion of the people who make a living inside of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center over anyone else in this matter.

I know that stars matter and that rankings do make something of a difference. But when it comes to recruiting, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. If Larry Johnson believes Ty Hamilton is deserving and worthy of an offer at this point in the recruiting cycle, trusting his judgment seems reasonable after all he’s accomplished in his career. If Ryan Day is willing to stake his first recruiting class on the success of a quartet of 3-star linemen who have been vetted and evaluated by him and his coaching staff, trusting that he’s not making that decision lightly makes sense.

In some cases, like Mitchell Melton and Cameron Martinez (if he ultimately commits to the Buckeyes), these are players that have been recruited and treated as a priority by the Buckeyes for months. They are prospects that Ohio State values much higher than those who are ranking recruits arbitrarily.

The goal is always to win for Ohio State, and that means winning recruiting titles as well as on-the-field titles. Every player selected by the Buckeyes is a piece that the coaching staff believes can help reach that goal — and make no mistake, at this point these players are being selected by Ohio State.

These are not concessions or last resorts, and the coaching staff isn’t sweating the rankings about them one bit.

I think the MOST IMPORTANT thing to point out is the last line.  These are not concessions.  These are they guys they wanted.

HS
aj99's picture

Don't worry about it Snake. We're a fickle bunch around here sometimes. And during the summer the variety of opinions can get pretty limited. And yes, sometimes, you're expected to be a sheep around here. But screw that. Don't worry about the down votes. The three stars are worrisome on some level, but I think it's just because this class got a bunch of stars on the front end and the middle is a short train of 3 stars. I think the staff will close it out just fine. I won't be worried unless we lose in AA and recruits defect.  Right now I'm in wait and see. I think the Bucks are absolutely loaded and we can afford a few 3 star guys from Ohio.

People forget stars are only numbers and they have a cut off at a certain number at 5 and 4 stars. My point is they some times could have a elite class and go further at the 5 stars because the talent is so deep and even the three stars could be 4's because for the same reason. Then there are years the talent is thin and some of the 5 stars wouldn't make it in the class before them at their ranking. In the case of Hawk he was lowered to a 3 because of injury and missed most of the season. Hooker on the other hand played only 2 years of football and never went to a camp. Again look at the people who offer not what the recruiting service ranks a player. Watching this kids film it's easy to see a DE here after he beefs up and a player who could drop back in coverage.

I really don’t understand the infatuation from some fans that the Buckeyes should sign 5 or 4 stars only and 3 stars should relegated to smaller or inferior programs. It’s a fact that there’s plenty of 3 star recruits that had an outstanding college and pro career, probably more so than a 5 star.

There’s plenty of reasons why a kids ranking is lower smaller school, didn’t attend summer camps or are late bloomers. What matters is can the coaching staff develop these kids? Melton was a huge Michigan target, so it’s not like he had plenty of offers to MAC schools.

Ohio State has the perfect blend of 5, 4, and 3 stars. Ryan Day has done an outstanding job at recruiting as I thought recruiting would take a slip after Meyer retired

HS
Kernfan's picture

I think people sometimes forget that every program has some 3 stars, even among the elite schools.  Looking at the 247 team talent rankings https://247sports.com/Season/2018-Football/CollegeTeamTalentComposite/, Clemson had 24, Bama had 18, ND had 38, and Oklahoma had 36.  OSU had the fewest at 17.
