Considering the large fires we've had the last few years it's a fair amount, don't be a loser, if your a smoker butt it out in your own car.

HS
LeftCoastBuckeye's picture

Funny you should mention that.  I woke up last night smelling forest fire smoke (becoming a regular summer thing around here) which they say is coming from central Alberta. Much of last summer's smoke came from central BC. Makes perfect sense to me why Canada would take a dim view of tossing lit butts from cars. It's always been a pet peeve of mine how smokers treat anyplace and everyplace as their personal ashtray.

My aim, then, is to whip the Weasels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.   - William Tecumseh Sherman (with apologies)

Oh yea it was bad here a few weeks ago, ours have cleaned up but the risk is still there.  I was out in Washington State in 2017 in mid September and it was still hazy from the BC fires.  I make sure to be somewhere different come August now with the fires and like the Camp one in Cali last year it's always over something stupid.

Don’t want a fine?

Don’t throw your garbage out your window. I wish the fine for littering would be $50,000.

HS
southbay's picture

Are there any limits to the power of government that you think are ok? I gotta ask, given your position on garbage thrown out of car windows.

BTW I've never smoked, really really hate cigarettes, and have a bad sensitivity to cigarette smoke and cigarette smoke residue after having lived the first eighteen years of my life with a heavy smoker. And I hate seeing anyone throwing any kind of trash out of a car window.

I think the fine here is $100-$1000 given whether it is lit or not or something.  Given the fires here in NORCAL you might get a good ass whipping if witnessed by the wrong person these days.  Just don't do it.  Several roadside fires have been linked to a small burning ember most likely a cigarette.

Speaking as a man who has put his car into park, stepped out of his car, picked up the cigarette butt off the ground, and given it back to the person who threw it on the ground while telling them to keep their garbage to themselves....

Lady got off easy.

Cigarette butts covering the ground near roads and sidewalks are disgusting.

HS
Sanitarian2's picture

I've picked them up in the Walmart parking lot, walked up to the person and said, "Here, I think you accidently dropped this". I've gotten blank stares, a thank you and one "F off" Stupid of me in todays society and I stopped years ago, too big a chance that some nut job welfare queen or king in PJ's might shoot me.

The reason it's so funny in Anchorman when Ron Burgundy throws the burrito out the window after deciding it's too filling is that it's so absurd. Nobody would chuck a wrapped burrito out of a moving car but people do it all the time with cigarettes. It's an outrage.

Alberta has a really large fine if you pass a roadside emergency vehicle with lights on at greater than 60 km/h.

Only saw one pile of poop though, so that was nice.

I would’ve stuck a bunch of cigarette butts into the poop pile and told passers by that it was a San Fran porcupine.

This particular pile of poop was in Oakland, which has a lower quality due to the lack of avocado toast and tech credentials.

The cigarette butt & poop sculpture would've been a nice consolation trophy for losing the NBA Finals. We can call it the "Klay Thompson", since it resembled how he looked laying on the court after tweaking his knee in game 6.

Man, what's with us Ohioans picking up these West Coaster's trash and cigarette butts?

HS
Zimmy07's picture

You probably shouldn’t smoke while driving.  Having the hot burning ash fall into your seat between your crotch is a lot more distracting than glancing at a text.

I haven’t smoked while driving for over 20 years.  I loath throwing butts on the ground as well.  Sucks that so many places are removing the outdoor ash trays & even trash cans.  I’m sure the person taking out the indoor trash just loves the smell of the filter I had to throw in there (w/ the rest ripped off & pulverized into dust to make sure it won’t start a trash fire).

HS
Dmac3212's picture

I stopped smoking in my car (and in general now) when I tossed a cig out my window on the highway and it came flying back in my car down my shirt.

HS
OSU56's picture

It is annoying- every time I mow the tree lawn, I wonder why there are at least 1-2 cigarette butts around my mail box. I typically don't find them in other places on the tree lawn, but for some reason their around the mail box. Are they actually aiming for it when they drive by? Drives me nuts....

I know what movie this is from but when I saw the hat I had a flashback to when I was in basic in the Army. A trainee threw a butt on the ground. They saw him and made him dig a six-foot hole and bury it. Once he got that done they said they changed their mind and to dig it back up. Once that was done, and the hole filled back in, they told him "now dispose of it properly". My guess is he never threw another on the ground.

They should make people who throw them out of car windows do that.

Linepilot15, your story brings back the memory of the, "Ft. Leonard Wood Police Call Position!" Imagine 200 Army Private E-1s lined up an arm's length apart, bent over at the waist (and your head better not gat higher than your waist,) slowly covering a 300 yard parade ground with a Drill Sergeant bellowing, "If it don't grow - it's gotta go!"  Of my 27 years in the Army, picking up cigarette butts was the most despicable thing I did. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.

HS
GrandTheftHarley's picture

Proud and long tradition at Fort Lost-in-the-Woods. I danced to the Drill Sergeant's tune there myself back in '73.

Come to think of it, as an Army brat beforehand I was policing cigarette butts at Fort Benning and Fort Carson even before I took the oath. My martinet step-dad trained me well.

Slight tangent: I always get a kick out of the highway signs in Canada that say: 100 kmh over the speed limit gets you $10,000 fine, roadside loss of license, and roadside confiscation of vehicle. They really mean it.

HS
Knarcisi's picture

And LOL at 100Km over?  That’s hauling some ass. They’re almost daring you to do it.

HS
Calgarybuck's picture

100% BC and Quebec are the stingiest when it comes to tickets and you won't be able to talk your way or reduce them.  Other spots like Alberta where I live will let you hire someone on your behalf (beats flying in or paying max) but yea just don't got 60 Miles over the limit ;)

I don’t mind it. The fine means there is a law behind it that you should be aware of besides the common sense of not throwing your garbage on the ground. Break the law, pay the fine. Pretty simple transaction she asked for.

We need some LCT acronym rule discussion:

1) it’s 3 words only. No 4th word like “is”.  Yes, I’m making this rule up myself.

2) many have appropriately stated that it’s too easy to start with “Likes”, “Loves”, or even “Loathes”. Yes, hard to do as this is an opinion board where LCT like most of us expresses his opinion.

So, use your upvotes accordingly. Thanks for listening to this important message.

So funny this thread popped up - thanks for validating my thoughts on this as I continue to argue with Italians that routinely do this yet deny that their still burning cigarette "cannot possibly start a fire on the side of the road"...  EVERY SUMMER I have these debates with people here and it is literally as if a team of aliens in multiple UFOs landed here and brainwashed Italians in to thinking that it is impossible for a cigarette to start a roadside fire = they have TONS OF FIRES every year.

One lady literally told me that "it is not cigarettes causing the fires" so I asked her what she thinks is and she stated "broken glass".  You just cannot make this up.

I wish the fine were more.  You want to smoke then use that damn thing in the middle of your car that for unknown reasons car makers still have to put there for you... I use it as a coin holder but I do not smoke.

Having traveled to Italy several times, it sure seems like the smoking rate is much higher than in the states. But I now live in China where the large majority of men smoke (but probably less than 10% of the women do), and they smoke a lot. Cigarette butts as far as the eye can see. They have these armies of street cleaners on bicycle carts cleaning up the trash. It is also not unusual to see people throw trash out of their car as their are driving too.

Classic Cincinnati story. In 1990 my (now ex) wife and I moved to Cincinnati. And we were also in the market for a car. So we happened to stop by Marge Schott's Buick dealership to check out a used car. And lo and behold, Marge pulls up in her Riveria, sees me and gives me the gravelly voiced, "Hi, how are you doing honey?" Well, we decided to check out her car. On the console sat a bean bag ashtray that was overflowing with butts all over the console. And you couldn't see the fabric of the back seat as it was covered in dog hair.

But hey, apparently she didn't throw out her butts.

I loath people who throw trash out the window. At a stoplight in St. Louis I gave a “woman” a very expletive laced piece of my mind about her dumping handfuls of trash out her car window. She just stared at me dumbfounded.

Another pet peeve is people who leave their carts in the parking lot. I asked a woman one time why she was leaving her cart in the spot next to her and she said because everyone does it. My reply “don’t be a lazy a-hole”. Her husband didn’t appreciate that lol

Came close to having an aneurysm over this. Some jackwagon smacked up my 6 month old Toyota years ago.Cost me like 1,200.00.Get the car back then I go shopping and deliberately park across the lot on a windy day. Some lazy wretch didn't park the cart and blew across the lot scratching the door/panel that had gotten repaired.Today I'd ask to see the security tape, man was I hot
