Kerry Coombs returns to Ohio State as the team's secondary coach and defensive coordinator.
I'm not sure I understand what constitutes being "overrated?"
Maurice Clarrett's impact was pretty much the reason why we won a National Championship over Miami...
Weird list, non-sensical, but what can you do?
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
In this context, overrated is a term without meaning (like "creepy").
Creepy means someone or something that makes people uncomfortable. The list is fucking ludicrous though. A two time heisman winner? I’m actually mad.
Any CFB overrated list that does not include the Ismail brothers holds no credibility.
Not sure how you can say Rocket was overrated. He was electrifying, helped to bring ND recruiting into a new era, won a Natty, and should have won another were it not for a terrible call on a kick return against Colorado.
Nattys are team accomplishments, overrated players get credit for team accomplishments, proving my point of him being overrated.
I'll come at it from a different angle: were we to have any player with two kickoff returns for TDs against Michigan in the same game, would we consider that player overrated?
I don’t know you only gave me half the info. I would need to know how much hype the player was getting and how the player was viewed nationally to answer your question.
Ramzy. I love your work. You are an extraordinary wordsmith.
Zero defensive players on the list? Jabrill Peppers would like to have a word with the creators of this!!
*article was written in 2011
Peppers was so overrated, the authors should have known back then.
Also, how about The Boz??
"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." - Nick Saban 1/2/15.
If you look past the self hype, Boz was an outstanding collegiate linebacker on the field.
Agreed. Ultimate failure in the NFL is a different list altogether. Boz was great at Oklahoma.
I guess I'm one of the three to get the Nursery Cryme reference. The Musical Box was one of their best songs from the Peter Gabriel era :)
Beat me to it Terry. Although I resent the term ancient. If my kids see that, they will laugh. I take enough abuse from them already. Something about the comparative age of dirt and me. Anyway, I was a progger wway before I grew up and became a blues/roots afficionado. Musical Box is just an exemplary piece of work. If you know it, enjoy it. If you've never heard it...educate yourself and give it a listen. Music at its best:
Ako ne možete postavljati bez gluposti ... nemojte
Ako vièeš na suce, ti si šupak
Not a bad song, but pretty sure I'd enjoy it a whole lot more after eating a handful of mushrooms (if I did that sort of thing...I don't....anymore).
Bonnaroo is this weekend.

I've never been. Not my thing anymore. 20 years ago it would've been awesome!
Let’s continue the classic Genesis theme by reviewing last year’s scUM game under the title Supper’s Ready”!
Ronny P Buckeye
I got the Nursery Cryme reference, and I instantly recognized it as Ramzy's handiwork.
The Musical Box was one of their best songs from the Peter Gabriel era :)
You must be joking; go take a running jump...
Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.
I got the reference, and I fall smack in the middle of Gen X. I actually don't know many Boomers who are old Genesis fans, but whatever.

His list is all over the place. At first glance you have to think with the OSU players listed he is looking more at who fizzled after college, because they all have left a permanent imprint on OSU history in a positive way (and some in a negative way as well). But thenn having Julio Jones listed at #2 completely defies that logic. Yes the article was written before what we now know about NFL Julio Jones. But if your motivation behind listing the OSU players is who didn't perform in the NFL, then you have to at least exclude Jones due to his story still being written.
Agree with most of your comment, but disagree about Julio Jones. I dont think he is 2nd but if you look at his numbers in college, they really aren't that impressive. But I think a lot of that has to do with the system they had @ Bama then.
At first blush, this list was confusing. It only got more confusing after reading his reasoning. I could've read this 8 years ago and I still wouldn't know what to make of it.
Personal truth is underrated, almost by definition.
All lists should start with Jacquizz Rodgers
Damn it feels good to be a Buckeye
Ramzy, no offense, but you should have gone with your first idea.
Shandy is not beer
No offense, don’t take this the wrong way, I’m just saying... all things to say before (or after) you insult someone.
Plenty of quarterbacks on that list too (without getting too nit-picky, I'd put Beano Cook's own Ron Powlus over Rick Mirer).
Lazy, laughable stuff. At least BleacherReport has managed to stay consistent...
It took me awhile to discover, listen to, and appreciate Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, and as a result Phil Collins-led Genesis should find their own high place among the 25 most overrated bands of all-time (dig on that, Pat Bateman).
Hindsight is, and in, 2020
It's always disappointing to see how the Phil Collins model started out (on A Trick of the Tail) and how it ended. It's the sound of a band giving up on trying to be artistic.
They evolved with the times, and they were perfect for the 80's and early MTV (you know, when MTV actually played music videos).
Nothing against Phil, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks, all great artists in their own right, but Genesis with Gabriel and the underappreciated Steve Hackett could not be matched.
As much as I appreciate Peter Gabriel, Genesis survived his loss fine as Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering proved. Losing Hackett was what fundamentally changed them. Although, Duke was still a great album. (So was Genesis). For me, Abacab was where they started to lose their way.
However, this is still a great song from their later catalogue
Yep, I get that - the band adjusted well after Gabriel's departure, and agree that losing Hackett may have been just as big a loss (or even greater). That guy never seems to get enough credit for his contributions with the band.
Again, I think the band evolved...as all bands who last over the years into decades do. Genesis was one of the bands with an early history I knew very little about until well into their more commercially successful periods - and it was a welcome discovery to stumble on the early albums.
This time, you beat me to it. Hackett's departure seems to mark the big change in their music. Duke was sort of the tweener album, but after that, they definitely went pop/top-40. Trick of the Tail is one of my favorites.
All true points re: Genesis, but Land of Confusion was a great effort.
I survived Cooper, and I hate Tai Streets.
That's fair - good song, cool video (definitely one of the better vids from early MTV).
"The Musical Box": One of my favorites!
I guess I don't understand the criteria for being considered overrated. When I think of overrated, I think somebody who wasn't as good as most people think they were. Is this guy saying that the only two time Heisman Trophy winner wasn't really that good?
Not to be "that guy" but in the header photo, why does Olave have #17 on his jersey and #19 on his helmet? Won't the zebras throw a flag on that?
I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.
Good eyes, Major. I think the 19 was to honor a player, not Olave's actual jersey number.
“Being average means you are as close to the bottom as you are to the top.” John Wooden
That was my guess. I tried to look it up but found nothing. Was it for a punter from Minnesota or Nebraska?
All these lists are now click-bait bullshit.

Anybody, A N Y B O D Y, who believes Archie Griffin was an overrated college football player is an absolute moron. How in holy hell can the only two-time Heisman trophy winner, and a guy who gained nearly 5,600 yards, be defined as 'overrated?' The simpleton who wrote this drivel should be banned from ever again putting pen to paper with regard to college football. Goddamn, what a dumbass. Oh well shit...
When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's
BRAVO! That is a TnB quality rant right there.
From what I heard he rarely played in the 4th quarter too.
And Pete Johnson got all the carries inside the 10 yard line.
Good memory! Great 1 - 2 punch!
"I think Alabama would beat Ohio State if they played next weekend!" Clay Travis Fox Sports Post Championship Show 1.12.2015. Needs no explanation.
Xerox that, Kmp10.
Archie as overrated? Sacrilege. Blasphemy. Abomination.
I am not very smart, but I recognize that I'm not very smart. --- W.W. Hayes
I think the names were picked to piss people off & get comment clicks for advertising. Jamarcus Russell unranked?
In fairness, if you're going only based off college production, JaMarcus Russell isn't even close to being on that list - he was a solid college QB, led his team to a lot of wins, and put up solid numbers in a major bowl game. He flopped in the pros but was solid enough in college. Honestly, I'm not even sure Russell is the most overrated LSU quarterback of all time because there was a nice annual ritual of hyping this guy as the new QB savior who would finally produce a remotely viable offense (and then the offense scoring like 12 points a game or something laughable like that).
The only way the list makes sense to me is if you base it on NFL performance.
Thats ALL of "media" today!
One time I was at a tailgate for a Wake Forest football game. Don't ask why, or how I found myself there. One of the older gentlemen hosting the tailgate became the first person I ever heard say Archie Griffin was overrated. He also sprinkled in a racist comment, because #south, and I tried to fight him. I named my dog Archie and I will never stand by idly while the good name of quite possibly the greatest football player of all time is slandered.
The only way Griffin can be called overrated is that he won more Heismans than other college players that are thought to be as talented or more so, which is a thin argument. I don’t think Pryor belongs in the top 25, but given the hype and drama around his arrival to OSU he really didn’t deliver at the level expected.
Where the heck is Ron Powlus? He was touted to win 2 Heismans before he took a snap. What a bust.
Clarett could not have possibly done more in his one year. He exceeded people’s wildest dreams, which is the polar opposite of overrated.
And Henne......had a healthy hate for him when he was a wolverine, but the guy won a LOT of games. Couldn’t get it done against us, but did most of the time.
"Woody would have wanted it that way"
I never saw the word overrated and thought "not good", just not the player of the hype.
I read Ramzy’s Bleacher Report Parody eight years ago when it came out. I forgot how hilarious and accurate it was.
Bleacher Report was astonishingly bad in those days. I remember doing a remote internship with them while I was studying journalism at OSU. My superiors kept getting mad at me because I kept writing traditional style articles that werent in a “top (insert number and subject)” format. They treated writing like an assembly line production. And the result was shit
Bleacher Report was astonishingly bad in those days
Statement implies B / R isn't astonishingly bad today
Oh, dont worry. I know it’s still bad. But back in the early part of the decade it was other worldly atrocious. I’m talking, so bad that you are left speechless when reading the articles
Im a huge Dane Sanzenbacher fan. Loved the way he played the game. Props for the Nod.
One of my all-time favorite effort plays was by Sanzenbacher. It was 2010 game against TTUN. He was blocking for Herron on what should have been a record-long rushing TD. He engaged a DB and blocked him for most of the final 50 yards alongside Herron. He took the guy to the ground near the goal line and picked up a bullshit holding call.
There were two versions of Genesis. The one with Peter Gabriel's heavy influence. The one without with Phil Collins' heavy influence. That is all.
"I find your lack of kalua disturbing" - Darth Lebowski
Actually, if you follow the song writing, the real change came after Steve Hackett left. Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering still sounded like the original band. Ripples is a song very much like Cinema Show.
Maybe I am stating the obvious, but the only context I can possibly think of for the people on that list is.....how well they played in college and how dull or ineffective their careers were in the NFL. K'Jana Carter come to mind, anyone? Again, that is the only "logic" I can see on that list. College heroes.....NFL...."zeroes" or something like that. Still...a dumbass list -- kind of wish I didn't devote any time to it, but if Ramzy writes it - I read it!
Tate Forcier looks pretty happy to be on that list
Girl or guy?
This list is like wolverine fur...I wipe my ass with it.
Feels like one of those articles that tries too hard to be abstract, and ends up just falling flat. List makes no sense, no definition of what constitutes overrated. Clarett, one season, a Nati, play of the decade. Underwhelming, sure, overrated, abdolutely not.
Its as if Herbstreit wrote this with all the Buckeyes on the list.
Never forget Pryor didn't want to run the zone read. He wanted to be an NFL QB. So as immature as he often seemed, he also made the right choices others don't. Tim Tebow is not in the NFL because he is stubbor/prideful. He isn't good enough, and won't change. Pryor did.
Who considers Jacory Harris overrated? Doesn't that mean you have higher regard for his play? I don't have high regards. I need some bourbon.
There is one acceptable fall wedding possibility. Getting married on the field, at halftime, and walking down the aisle to Across the Field.

Nice article. Weird list.
The referenced article is evidence that somewhere, there truly are an infinite number of monkeys with keyboards...
Archie Griffin, overrated? Please!
Reading the rationale for the inclusion of each person on the overrated list shows how little depth and thought went into that list. It really is just a guy with a keyboard.
To be honest, the most overrated college player of all time would be interesting to put together, but there would need to be some discipline. You can take it as pre-college hype vs college career or college hype vs Pro-career. The ball is in your court Ramzy!
Just to pile on here, at least define the context of your analysis mr. list maker.
