Oh boy, if Fields does not start I am not optimistic at all for the season. This is borderline too much coach speak. Perhaps they are seeing some issues with his game. It does not inspire confidence to me.
Maybe Gunnar Hoak is actually really good?
It’s an open competition but 90% of the article was about Fields. Just like in the spring when Fields took most of the Reps with the 1’s.
He prob is, but Fields is amazing and a once in a generation type talent
Chill it’s almost 100% coach speak plus fall camp isn’t even close to starting yet.
I am with you. Hope we are not reading too much into this and he is just projecting some Urban psychology but throughout the spring there has not been one time we heard any glowing reviews of what Fields was doing. Everything has been caveated.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
Well we do know that two separate QB’s transferred out of OSU within like a month or two of fields being on campus so you could argue that is a glowing review.
I think the coach is just getting both of them fired up so he may get more out of both of them.
m GO BLOW!!!
Coach speak...Fields is the starter unless something bad happens
Whether it's game one or later, you can bet the Buckeyes are going to need a strong Hoak this year to reach the Goals. Appreciate him coming in and fighting for the job. Can't wait...
Only way Fields isn’t starting (short of being injured), is if Hoak is the second coming of the Dwayne train.
I want a fall Saturday in Ohio Stadium..
More than likely he told Hoak it would be an open competition and doesn’t want to go back on that when they haven’t even had any practices. I still expect Fields to win the job later though.
Looking back, I was team JT, so to speak. It turns out Haskins’ heroics against the team up north was who he is. He should have been starting. This arm chair is comfortable.
Good on you, sir, for being willing to share that.
Coach Day: “This is a real QB competition. Seriously, the job is up for grabs.”
Let’s not be too sensitive. The article said it all. Fields has tremendous upside, but he hasn’t started a game in cfb. If I’m a coach, I want that guy fighting for the position and to prove he’s not all hype without substance. And I want Hoak to feel like this transfer was a waste of time. This keeps him engaged.
And if Fields is half the player we think he is, he’ll rise to the challenge and become a better player.
Above should be “wasn’t a waste of time”
this is a joke. matt baldwin wouldn't have left if he felt there was a "real competition". the idea that hoak is going to get a legit shot at the starting job is laughable. the only way he starts is if days guy fields breaks his leg.
i have no issue with day if he decided fields was his starter as soon as he agreed to transfer - day is the coach and he can do what he wants. but he shouldn't be putting out this type of message when he KNOWS it isn't true.
Creating a competitive environment, even when there really isn’t one, is a part the coach’s job. Coaches that begin to fail at this lose to Purdue.
I would tend to agree with you.
Why do people refuse to believe Baldwin transferred to be closer to home. He is probably not going to start at TCU.
It is an open QB competition...”wink wink”...
Every QB on our roster should be making improvement weekly. We want all to be ready if needed.
Only way Fields improves is if someone is pushing him. Maybe that's what was wrong before. Baldwin wasn't good enough to push him. Day and Yurcich are pros at developing QBs.

Yeah, no. Just, no. Need to keep Hoak sharp, mentally, just in case of injury or unanticipated indiscretion on JF's part . That's all this is, which is prudent. Actual competition? Nah.
If Fields is not the starter in the first game of the year I'll donate my paycheck to Michigan Athletics.
At least you would be in good company, the best Michigan men were Ohio men first.
Nothing wrong with a little competition. I have no doubt Fields will take the starting job and run with it but it doesn’t hurt to have someone behind him pushing him a bit.
It's good that Day is keeping his QBs engaged.
They're not saying anything alarming. We all know Fields needs experience, and saying things about how hard he's working on drills and film are probably as much to keep him motivated as it is to inform the public. Current mood: not worried at all.
It is a quarterback competition and it should be open. We have a very large number of people on this site basically demanding that starters are removed from their positions after last year yet seem incapable of grasping that the QB who has NEVER STARTED A COLLEGE GAME is in a legit competition for the starting position at a top level P5 school - why!?
I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
If this were a Universit of Kentucky backup point guard transferring to the OSU hard court group, there wouldn't be much to discuss. But the fact that Justin Fields (former NATIONAL # 1 recruit) is NOT being named a clear starter at this point raises red flags, mostly from "between the ears" on this kid. given his size, quickness, strength (arm and other), and reputation, the fact that a former local high school "good" QB, a backup at the university of Kentucky, is being mentioned as in the hunt, is an eyebrow raiser. Something (???) is clearly not up to par with Mr. Fields.
Or...the head coach wants to keep the presumed backup fully engaged because he could be needed at any time???
In what world do you tell a 19 year old, who already thinks he's the best QB ever, who never started a game in college, and who just got to campus 3 months ago, that he is the starting QB at Ohio St. without ever going through fall training camp. Think about it... would any of you name him a starter before the fall?
Last time I heard talk like that, I feel like every QB in the room left
