Most interesting quote to me.

On J.K. Dobbins: "He's one of the guys that has to play good ... He has to play good for us, especially in the first six games of the year."

Sounds like he's put sort of a 6 game window on the offense and passing game getting up to speed where he wants it to be.

Go Bucks!

I'm assuming it also has to do with a window of time in which they can get Fields (or whoever starts) up to speed. Having a good running game will make that early experience easier for him leading into the meat of the schedule.

To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.

Or maybe it’s as simple as six games is halfway through the regular season and he wants the offense gelling by then. The schedule isn’t overly taxing—FAU, UC, IU, Miami, Nebraska and MSU—with the last two the most challenging (followed by a bye after MSU) so it’s probably just Day wanting to keep getting better from one week to the next so that we’re in a good place coming out of the bye week and ready for the back half of the schedule.

Maybe I wish the OSU beat reporters did a better job of asking follow up questions of the HC. I'm not pointing solely at the 11W guys as this has been going on for years.

This is a really good point. It shows a season plan: establish and rely on the run early. Build the passing game for the (very loaded) back half of the schedule.

It also could be that they will need the run game to be successful as he knows the passing game will need time to get up to speed with all new QB's learning the system. They're going to depend on the run to be  good from the at the start.

There’s going to be a lot of growing pains from the QB posistion this season. Justin Fields is a young player and he didn’t exactly look great in the Spring Game. Hopefully he’ll get better and better with each game he plays. Sounds like that’s what Ryan Day is hoping for. I like winning games with defense, special teams and running game.

Good to hear from the ol ball coach.

I can be wrong but I mentioned before last season the Oline was built more for pass protection than the running game. Everyone on that line was not only big but had long arms to reach out. Center normally on any team has a shorter guy there and the move of Jordon was a surprise to me. Weber in my eyes didn't have a real great year either but better than the two over all. I blame the line more than the backs last year because running back's are just that you react to the hole and not much you can do if you don't have one to run to. Maybe I'm wrong that's how I saw it.

I think the QB played into the weak running game also.

I agree with this. We could not run block well but I think that groups wasn’t put together for run blocking

Because there are less classes in the summer, Day said this is an important time for players and coaches to spend time together and build camaraderie.

Unless he meant to say "lesser" classes.

He's one of the guys that has to play good

He's one of the guys who has to play well.  But we didn't hire Day for his grammar.  As long as he can recruit and coach them up, I'm fine with his grammar.  Let's hope this is a June to remember!

Go Buckeyes!!!

Is it considered grammar if it's not written?

Love his response.

Because he understands the expectations, and how serious the Buckeye faithful are about them, but Day can still be positive and personable while on task.

We're very fortunate to have enjoyed the successes the Buckeyes have had the past near 20 years under different coaches with very different personalities...and I think that continues on with Day.

I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...

*edit

I should have said "once HE gets his wins....." He and the team earn them. WE just enjoy them.

Wanted to clarify that because after the fact it read kinda douchey

I really appreciate Coach Day in the manner he talks to the press. He stays away from ""he's the best, we want to..." etc.). It seems to me that he answers the questions and sets expectations with those statements. I like the fact that he has put the onus on JK having to be good for the first 6 games. It also puts emphasis on the O-line needing to gel rather quickly in the run game. This will allow our new QB the time to be efficient understanding the plays and developing into a leader.

I think it would also set up the back half of the schedule to show new wrinkles for the more loaded part of said schedule and have potentially new game planning that causes the opposition to have to guess at what we are going to be throwing at them.

Coach Day is a breath of fresh air in how he answers questions.  Very honest and forthright.

What a nice change in today's avoid the question and accountability mindset.

He did avoid some of the trap questions he was given. He didn't avoid answering ... he just avoided naming names. For example, the which position group question.  BTW, I encourage this type of behavior. Never let the media drive a wedge into your team.

Day says people always ask what if he doesn't win a national championship, what if he doesn't beat Michigan. Day: "I always come back with, 'What if I do?'"

That’s my coach! Oh yeah!!

I think I saw Jerry's dad wear that suit on a few Seinfeld episodes.

Joking aside Coach Day offers us so many positives. That first game vs. FAU cannot get here soon enough.

Love the response from RFD "What if I do"

I think Urban had a pretty good read on this guy.  I think we are going to be in good hands.

I’m not buying “Fields didn’t win the job” it’s about like saying Hurts hasn’t won the job at Ou or that Tua hasn’t locked down the job at bama

I enjoy hearing Coach Day speak. He doesn't seem bewildered in his role. He seems like he's calm and on top of things. Very direct but positive.
