Pwe Biggins on Clark Phillips: "He said he thinks he'll have a good idea where his recruitment is at following that visit to Ohio State." Pretty telling comment IMO.

If he had a nice trip to Cal...OSU will blow him away.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS

Hafley is in an unbelievable position to land him. Props to him!

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

After reading the article, that quote really makes it sound like it's down to us and Cal, with Cal sounding like a very good (for Phillips) Plan B in case something doesn't add up on trip to Columbus.

HS
clark15kent's picture

I love being in on so many west coast kids, but I also caught myself thinking "what in the world is going on in the PAC 12?"  I understand that there are a lot of kids probably holding off to see how the season goes and what coaches may be fired, but current 247 composite rankings for Pac 12 schools are Oregon 15, Stanford 28, Cal 34, Wash 44, USC 50 (4 commits), ASU 57, WSU  66, UCLA 70, Ariz 90.  Yikes!

HS
buckbuck12's picture

Speaking of west coast, the Chris Steele and Bru McCoy situation is pretty weird though.

HS
urbansjacket2's picture

Honestly...I'm hoping USC squeaks out 9-10 wins to keep Helton so Urbs doesn't take that job haha.

HS
Kangarooman's picture

Maybe Im in the minority, but I really believe Urbs is done. I could see the fork sticking out of him. Obviously, he's an all time great and still pulled out a one-loss season, but he was tough to watch.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Purely judging from the reports, but Steele's situation sounds like he took a principled stand, and McCoy sounds like a kid who keeps calling home from different sleep-away camps for a ride home.

HS
Kangarooman's picture

The PAC has been bad long enough to where im starting to question whether the west coast has currently has a culture that lends itself to athletic success.

HS
FieldsofJreams's picture

The cultural and personality traits of SoCal and BayArea expats does not replicate the importance on which Midwesterners and Southerners put on sports (specifically football).

I do think we will see more and more Top Prospects in the West coming out of Phoenix.  The area is culturally closer to Texas I feel.

HS
stxbuck's picture

The Pac12 is always a rollercoaster. Right now Washington, Wazzu, and Stanford are on top of the hill and the Arizona and LA schools are in a dip. The recruiting is so fluid out there, the "it" school changes from year to year. Right now Oregon and Washington are hot-3 years-who knows?

HS

I couldn’t agree more. I would hate to be a Cal fan reading that article. Everything is glowing and sounding great. It really sounds like he may be leaning towards Cal and then it’s like a punch in the face. He basically said he’s felt this way after every visit and he wants to go to OSU and then make a decision.

HS

The CBs that AE was referring to in the last forum are; cloudy on Jalen Berger, cloudy on Bijan Robinson, and Henry Gray to PSU.

He did mention that he was going to put in one in favor of tOSU though. My guess is Milton.

It's a beautiful day in Columbus, Ohio... and TTUN still sucks.

Question about Knighton, 247 lists Mookie Cooper as 5-8.5 193 and he will be a slot receiver while Knighton is 5-9 185 on 247. Is Knighton recruited solely as a RB?

TE Jalin Conyers just announced a top 3 of OSU, Georgia and Oklahoma. Dark horse to be in this class?

HS
Woodshed's picture

I think so.

speaking of TE, I still can't figure out why osu seems to want 2 of them this year.

HS
Woodshed's picture

I see 5 with one leaving.

thanks for your contribution.

HS
Triv's picture

I know we're not supposed to speculate on departing players, but I don't see a scenario where Hausmann is on the roster next year unless he just really really wants to be a Buckeye and doesn't care about PT. RS Seniors don't tend to stick around as 3rd string players (he's behind both Luke Farrell and Jeremy Ruckert), so he might be a guy who either grad transfers or just doesn't use his 5th year of eligibility.

That being said, I agree with you that I wouldn't take 2 TE this year. I think 1 is fine even if we lose both Berry and Hausmann. But I'm not in charge of roster management and OSU may prefer 5 scholarship TEs at a time.

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

Since Knighton is growing on OSU, what does that do to Trayanum?

HS

HS
drinks2muchcoffee's picture

Bill Greene thinks they now might want 3. Milton and Trayanum as your typical every down backs and  Knighton as a passing down scatback

HS
Cincybuckeye's picture

Wouldn't bringing Knighton in as a scatback be contradictory to the idea that Milton would be a three-down back like his dad said?

HS
Ludwig Yards's picture

Well yeah, OSU coaches are liars.

-JJ McCarthy

HS
Kangarooman's picture

Yeah, color me a little skeptical OSU will ever have a three down back again. A least not one that rotates series on a regular basis.

HS
ELJTSA76's picture

Why?  That’s exactly what happened last season, and the past few seasons, isnt it?

HS
Kangarooman's picture

We could argue about semantics on this, but I got the impression Milton believes he's been told he's going to come in and immediately be a featured back workhorse.  And I'll believe that when I see it.

HS
Stellar's picture

I think he's told he will have the chance to compete for a featured role, which is true with Dobbins likely on his way out. But there are no guarantees.

Any hopes of getting a few defensive players in this class? Everyone want's to discuss TE, RB, All Purpose backs, WR's etc. Any news on anyone about to pull the trigger on the least attractive side of the ball?

HS
TYBGerritt's picture

I feel like it's been said before but might as well say it again; The offensive staff had next-to-no changes on it other than Day moving to HC and bringing in Yurcich. On defense, you're replacing EVERY positional coach and coordinator except LJ. The offense is a proven product, the defense, not so much. Give it time, they'll come, but hard to blame any defensive recruit for wanting to see some positive signs of change first before getting on board

HS

Not sure if we take any more true receivers but if we do keep an eye on Keandre Lambert. He takes Muhsin Muhammad's, who recently commited to A&M, place on the WR board. WR board (not including slot guys) should look like this: Rosemy, Johnny Wilson (wr/te), Bunkley-Shelton/Lambert/Odunze. We may end up not taking any more of these guys. Slot board: Martinez(ATH)/Cooper, Knighton (APB/Slot),Wren, Henning, Drennen. Jalen Berger and Toafilil are other RB's who could end up at Slot as well.

TOS reporting there's a chance Georgia could be getting the last visit for Milton instead of Bama.  I don't like that.

HS
USNbuckeyeBG's picture

AE also just CB’ed Zach Evans to UGA. That is good news

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

If Georgia lands Milton it's not going to be bc they had the last visit. It's bc his family believes in the plan they have for him over ours.

I have faith Alford wins this.

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

Georgia has Zamir White on the roster as well.  I know he was injured but if he comes back 100% he is scary-good.  I think the Milton's will see the best opportunity for early playing time with OSU.

Fields of Dreams

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

They also have James Cook (Dalvon Cook's brother) from the same class as White and signed Kenny McIntosh last year.

HS
EBBuck03's picture

True, but that last visit can be an advantage.  That's why Urban always pushed for it.

HS
Buckeye06's picture

Yea I think the AE move with Evans tipped his hand with Milton; who knows if it's true.  We could end up losing all of them, with Milton at LSU.  Who knows; we are in this against some of the best at developing RBs (as is OSU)

HS
EBBuck03's picture

LSU just landed 5* RB John Emery Jr last year in addition to another Top 150 RB.

HS
huffdaddy's picture

If Bijan goes to Texas, Milton has his pick from some really good programs. Being the co-back at Georgia or Alabama vs being the featured back at OSU are different, and the co-back thing is not a crazy direction to go. But I like our chances here.

"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." - Nick Saban 1/2/15.

HS
EBBuck03's picture

You are absolutely correct about the co-back angle.  However, I think UGA already has there "co-backs" in place for 2020 season in Zamir White and James Cook/McIntosh...or at least OSU could argue that.  In an interview his dad did early this week they said playing early in an important aspect of his decision and he has the best opportunity to do that in Columbus.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

The RB by committee has worked for UGA and Alabama. Probably no position takes more of a beating than RB. Guys who are smart will realize that it makes more sense to be a co-starter and give up carries in exchange for taking fewer hits to be healthy. If you're good enough, the NFL will find you--Josh Jacobs is the perfect example of that.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

HS
Andrew Ellis's picture

Think it's a moot point though since Milton is very likely to come off the board before Robinson.

EBBuck03's picture

Looks like Zachary Evans' close friend and teammate Damieon George committed to Bama last night.  He is adamant that they are a package deal.  Now, we all know how package deals go in June vs. January, but something to at least keep an eye on.  It could effect Evans to UGA.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Another RB in this game of musical chairs to pay attention to according to the Miami board is new 5* Don Chaney. He's committed to the U but they're worried about what happens if UGA comes calling.

This is will be short but Jt was not short

HS
buckbuck12's picture

Those UGA fans are sooo delusional about getting both Evans and Milton and its not even funny.

HS
huffdaddy's picture

I've noticed that Georgia fans are getting really chirpy these days for a team that hasn't won a natty since 1980. They better win one in the next two years with their recruitment results, because if things stagnate or go backwards, Smart is going to be Charlie Weiss redux: a guy who was lionized for some close losses.

"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." - Nick Saban 1/2/15.

HS
bd2999's picture

They are, and they have a very good team. For one that has not really done much. They did make it to a title game, and lost. They lost their bowl game last year. They are a good team but not sure they are quite worth the trash talking as of yet.

They are doing something done there with recruiting though. They seem to get so many very highly ranked guys.

HS
elitesmithie's picture

Georgia, the Michigan of the SEC

HS
FieldsofJreams's picture

Then when you just throw in our RB tradition in general and the fact that no school incorporates backs as much as UGA does, it's a no brainer, especially given that we are going to remain an Annual playoff contender

And other fans call us arrogant?  We have all along just wanted the 1st 5* RB ready to commit, no one here getting greedy.

I understand sharing carries, but to think you can have x5 Top10, x4 Top5 and x3 Top3 RBs all within 2 years of separation, is delusional.

If White is healthy, Milton might barely play his 1st year, and it seems like he wants to be a Player on Day 1.

HS
keith7456's picture

Well I mean who wouldn't want to play in the SEC. If a kid doesn't play in the SEC then they obviously must not be a good player or want to play against the best.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

ND fans and Wiltfong did the same (like 2 years ago I think) on their board and then AE ended up being right and it shut all of them up. Was a very enjoyable moment.

HS
Andrew Ellis's picture

What a weird thing to get mad about. Multiple people in Texas told me they think he's going to end up in Athens, so I went ahead and crystal balled him. Also was told that McGowan could be leaning toward Georgia over Oklahoma. People freak out about the weirdest things.

If McGowan popped to Georgia before Milton announces it would help immensely. But that doesn’t really seem likely at this point.

EBBuck03's picture

You still liking OSU's chance with Milton regardless?

HS
Andrew Ellis's picture

Yeah mostly just because I know Ohio State has a lot of optimism right now. I’m sure he’ll have good things to say about Georgia and there will be some confidence from them as well. Interested in what the LSU side has to say after this weekend since they’re sort of the neutral party in all of this.

Good to see Georgia isn’t getting the last OV even though the family doesn’t seem like one that’ll be too influenced by recency  stuff.

https://n.rivals.com/news/rivals250-released-analysts-weigh-in-on-toughe...

1. Who did you go to bat for that will make you look smart down the road?

ROB CASSIDY (Southeast/Florida): I led the charge to move up wide receiver Gee Scott , an Ohio State commit. Scott was one of the most explosive receivers at the adidas 7-on-7 nationals and showed the acceleration that will offset his lack of truly top-end speed. Scott created separation from a number of highly thought-of defensive backs and should have no problem doing the same in college. He’s not a perfect prospect, but he’ll be a difference-maker in the Big Ten.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

I thought this was interesting, too (same link):

2. Who do you fear we might have too high?

JOSH HELMHOLDT (Midwest):
Rakim Jarrett is a nice wide receiver, but I don't know that I see five-stars with him. With the depth of talent at the position, you need to be pretty special to be a five-star wide receiver. Jarrett is good, no doubt, but I do not see him in the elite tier with our other current five-star receivers.

HS
Weave77's picture

Great article!

Also, someone else hyped Gee Scott later in the article as well!

ADAM GORNEY (National/West Coast): We dropped Johnny Wilson from five- to four-star based on his performances in his junior season and this offseason, and there are still wide receivers behind him who had outstanding showings over the last few months. In the West region alone, no player is as fast or as sudden as Gary Bryant. Maybe no receiver nationally has had a better offseason than Ohio State commit Gee Scott Jr. Four-star Jalen McMillan has been absolutely outstanding at numerous events as well. There might not be a receiver who looks better than Wilson but his production needs to go up to justify his lofty ranking.

HS
NorthPoleBuckeye's picture

offset his lack of truly top-end speed.

He’s not a perfect prospect, but he’ll be a difference-maker in the Big Ten.

This almost sounds like the stereotypical dig at the slow Big Ten.

HS
UrbzRenewal's picture

He doesn't have elite top-end speed. Neither does Michael Thomas or Keenan Allen, and both of them are doing just fine.

Not everything is a dig or slight, sometimes it's just the truth in the numbers.

HS
NorthPoleBuckeye's picture

Not questioning the lack of top end speed but more so that he would be a difference maker in the Big Ten. Would he not be a difference maker in the SEC, I certainly think he would? I think the comment could have ended at "difference maker".

The other interesting thing about tomorrow's camp is the showdown of Lachey vs Royer for a TE offer. I like them both though Royer seems like he'd be the one best equipped to play early. Lachey needs to add a lot of weight still.

HS

TEs are rarely ready to play early. Since there won't be an immediate need at the position and they're likely taking 2 TEs this cycle it may make sense to go with the player with more long term upside.

Should be safety I think. Kourt Williams is being recruited as the bullet for this class. Though they are putting Rickey Hyatt through a workout tomorrow too.

HS
Aportis0214's picture

I'd also guess safety. I think a Bullet should be in the 215-225lb range and Makari looks like he'll play at around 200, he's only 180lbs right now

They'd take Paige, Ransom, and Martinez. We'll see on Hyatt. Marinez and Hyatt possibly having position flexibility could allow all four to end up in the class if OSU wants that to be the case. Obviously Ransom is far from a done deal. Paige not a done deal yet either.

I'd guess OSU but it's definitely just a guess based partially on getting the last visit. LSU is getting Major Burns tomorrow and now apparently they may be close to getting that Jordan Toles kid from Maryland too. That'd be a pair of good safeties for them (some say CB for Burns but 6’3” is a big corner). If that happens then it's probably gonna be Ohio State vs. Texas for Ransom with Notre Dame also lingering.

Usually don't worry about ND for defensive backs. Texas is a concern especially with Bijan also being interested.

We are in a great spot for Large. Bama already has Caden Clark and Georgia is the heavy favorites for Arik Gilbert (+they took 2 TE in '19). I think we get him and Royer. I like Lachey but Royer is Noah Fant 2.0. He's also teammates with Jakob James.

Zachman has consistently run in the 4.5 range going back to last summer’s Rivals camp that he attended. He was 3rd at 220 in the Pennsylvania state wrestling championships and was first in the state with 35 pins. And he hit .360 and had a 2.93 ERA in baseball this year. There’s video of him repping 225 21 times. And dunking a basketball. They have a word for guys like that: athlete. He reminds me of Tyler Moeller, who many considered a tagalong to 5-star Connor Smith but had a much better career at Ohio State.

I wonder if Lachey and Royer will climb in the rankings while Caudill will fall. Caudill is ranked much higher than the other two but was supposedly performed much worse according to the 247 writers

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

I'm growing increasingly of the mindset that we should focus completely on getting TEs that fit our system (guys who are blocker-first), much in the same way LJ looks for guys, size and skill-wise, who fit his system. I just don't see us throwing consistently to our TEs and to look for the 5* guys who are increasingly like H-backs doesn't seem to make sense.

HS
TomD's picture

This seems like a completely reasonable take, but I wonder how the TE will fit into a Coach Day led offensive approach.  Will Coach Day, under the influence of Coach Wilson, be more inclined to include the TE as an integral part of the passing offense?

With TE talent like Jeremy Ruckert on the team, a tall, strong TE who can catch the ball, it seems a shame to not utilize his specific talents more.  I know that there has been some talk about utilizing him on the outside, at H-Back. Having said that, still optimistic that Coach Day takes a different, more offensively active approach to the TE than Coach Meyer was inclined to do. Especially in a more pass inclined offense, that seems to be where a Coach Day led offense is likely to go.

"Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it." - Woody Hayes

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

You're right, TomD, it does make sense to see how the passing game develops under Day only.

Sometimes I think Meyer wanted all the toys even if he had no intention of ever playing with them; and he was a good enough recruiter to get them.

HS
huffdaddy's picture

I will be interested to see both how Day uses the TE but also the extent to which WR blocking is a huge priority. Under UFM, he was clear that you had to be able to block at that position, and that was typically what kept underclassmen out of the rotation.

Obviously, we saw why he believed in that system when Zeke was shredding Bama and Oregon. But sometimes the system kept us from playing our best pass catchers.

"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." - Nick Saban 1/2/15.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Exactly. I’m sure all the whiners who are constantly bitching about TE usage wouldn’t want see Garrett Wilson or Julian Fleming w 2 or 3 fewer targets a game each by design.......

HS
Woodshed's picture

This.

Osu crushes the B10 passing record books and 80% of the fans wonder why the TEs don’t catch more passes....

cant even make that stuff up.

HS
TomD's picture

Throwing to the TE diversifies the offense.  A diversified offense has a better chance to make the big play at a critical time, that may turn around a close game, especially on the road. And it provides an additional weapon to attack the defense, especially if the defense is overplaying in a way that opens up throwing to the TE.

No one is saying make the TE a primary part of the passing game. However, especially with a talent like Jeremy Ruckert on the team, 5-8 targets per game, particularly at opportune times during the game, helps to open up the defense. Then the running game is better and the outside receivers most likely have a little more room and time to make big plays.

More diversity to the offense, that's all that most people who advocate a more active, passing catching role for the TE, are saying.

I would have to say there is a good possibility of the two becoming teammates again at OSU. I know Jacolbe said they have talked about teaming up again before.
