Global Entry Program Problems

Funny stuff, as I was writing the initial forum, I received an email saying that they are starting a, "Enrollment on Arrival" program. The next time we enter the US from overseas, we can do our interview at the airport without an appointment. There are about 50 airports where this can be done. The problem with this is that if you are trying to make a connecting flight, you might miss it. Coming thru Miami last time, with a 2 hour layover, we made our connection by the skin of our teeth due to the long lines that we are hoping to avoid on our next trip. I'd like to have this squared away before we leave on our next trip, especially since we are due to return a week before Christmas.

I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.

I did this when coming back from Colombia to Miami just after New Year's this year. I waited maybe 5-10 minutes, answered some questions/got my picture taken for about 5-10 minutes and then I was out. Very easy, very quick. The downside obviously is you don't get the benefit of Global Entry until after your next international trip.

Not to read into the email, but maybe this means I've been approved? Would be nice if they said so.

By now you probably have your answer, but if not you can check your online account and find out for certain.

Sounds like funding for staffing may have been cut.  That’s a guess.  I think that has been happening, though.

Going through customs in a country where you speak the language, but not very well was stressful when I did it.  I didn’t know there was an alternative.

No funds for staffing? Yikes, what a pain in the butt.

When we cane thru Miami last month, as we lined up for customs, there was an electronic board that had a list of about 20 international flights that had just landed. There were at least 250 people ahead of us in the queue and plenty more lining up behind us. There were stalls available for at least 30 checkpoints, but only 4 were open and operating. That's like going to a super Walmart where there are 30 cash registers , but only 4 are open. Why build 30 registers if you are never going to open them?

I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.

Oh, jeez.  I didn’t realize you meant US customs.  I thought this was a fast pass for other countries.  Panama (I had a 1 day layover there) was the one that stressed me out.  My Spanish is maybe 3rd grade level for Spanish speakers.

I’ve been through US customs in Miami & it was not like that - maybe 3 years ago?

I know things WERE delayed by the government shutdown, but I know nothing of an ongoing government shutdown. That is quite odd, and you'd think they'd be caught up by now anyways.

Sorry to break this to you.... but the hard part for me was actually finding availability for the interview. That frustration will be coming next unless you live near a location that has frequent availability.

Someone probably hit a wrong key and accidentally sent you Form Letter 27-H with the "partial government shutdown" explanation instead of Form Letter 6-B with the "we're getting around to it, just chillax" explanation.

I Really want to know - I think.  This is sarcasm,  I just can’t tell for sure.

I just got mine done a few months ago and only had to wait a few weeks making the drive up to Detroit...just remember it’s a government job so bbq^ is right....I had better luck doing the interview at a point of entry, but I think I was lucky due to a short line. They only really need your finger prints so all in all it shouldn’t take long. Also, if you are conditionally approved typically that will let you still use the global entry line. Hope this helps!

Guess I should note, I interviewed twice, first time “there wasn’t any record” sounded like my recruiter at MEPS all over again

Now that is scary!

I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.

(I'm not opening up a discussion on the politics of this situation, I just want to know if there is a government shutdown that I don't know about.)

You said the word politics.

Ban him!

Do they weigh more than a duck, though?

Sorry, Zimmy, that went right over my head.

Monty Python - “burn her”!  Because she weighed more than a duck & witches won’t float according to real medieval tests for witches.

Sorry.  That’s pretty obscure.  No one even got turned into a newt.

Maybe they did and just got better.

I got it!

In fact, as I typed Ban him! I was speaking it aloud like they did in the Holy Grail.

Well, my Global Entry did get held up for a little ‘incident’ back in my Ohio State days....

HS

Well it's summer.  Vacation season. I got my Global Entry during the winter and the approval only took a couple weeks. Hang in there.

HS

Yeah, poor timing on my part. Thanks.

My guess is with the government shut down earlier in the year things got backed up and they haven't caught up yet.

HS
Zimmy07's picture

There are rumors of a lawsuit that - if they win - would refund the % of our taxes that correspond to the % of the Time the government was shut down.

in all honesty, I hope they win.

HS

That would be nice. A bit more incentive to keep the wheels moving.

I applied for Global entry in March and just a couple weeks ago was able to set up my appt.  Just make sure you keep checking the website you applied on as I never received an email telling me they were ready to schedule the interview appt.

HS

Thanks, Jangs78. So when they say they'll email us, it was their way of saying, "Don't call us, we'll call you!"

I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.
