Dan, looking forward to seeing more details on Kevin's experience. COO is a solid role to now be the main advocate for the conference, but I'm not familiar with his career history, especially any on the collegiate side. An outsider should bring good perspective especially from an organization which depends on the pipeline from the one he's now going to lead.

I hate the offseason.

Will definitely have more details on him when it becomes official tomorrow. I'm still just learning about him myself, as he was not one of the speculated candidates before tonight. From what I have read so far, though, he has a wide range of experience in the sports and legal industries and was very highly regarded within the NFL, so he seems to be more than qualified.

His bio on the Vikings' website provides a lot of details about his career history: https://www.vikings.com/team/front-office-roster/kevin-warren

Who were some of the speculated candidates? They must be great based on some of the comments above.

@ Dan Hope, Do you have mod ability to zap racist comments?

Good to see. I know it's late at night and coverage by mods and staff is then more sporadic. I do appreciate what they do.

Why does it make you feel so much better to have differing opinions removed? Are you that soft?

My God, man up.

HS

When I just now saw the story the first thought that went through my mind was, this is going to bring out the racists.  I'm glad I got here after the mods cleaned up the scum.  Thank you mods!

IF this was the same comment I think it was, (can’t tell now because it was removed by the PC police), then that is pathetic.

And, for you: Pathetic comment. Fascist mindset of you, to call people who have a differing (NON-racist) opinion, “racist” and “scum”. Fascist of the site that they removed the comments too.

IF this was the same comment I think it was, (can’t tell now because it was removed by the PC police), then that is pathetic.

If you are so offended by the “PC Police” on 11W, whomever they are, then maybe it’s not the site for you.

My experience is that people that regularly complain about a “PC culture” on 11W also regularly have comments grayed out or removed due to their bombastic and argumentative nature. Personally, it seems like a common cop out to avoiding taking personal responsibility for shitty comments that violate the commenting policy.

And, for you: Pathetic comment. Fascist mindset of you, to call people who have a differing (NON-racist) opinion, “racist” and “scum”. Fascist of the site that they removed the comments too.

I don’t think you are using the term Fascist correctly. In fact, I think you have it about opposite, and you are the Fascist in this argument.

So, pre tell, please do tell me: what was the original comment which was removed?

Was it a comment that somebody stated this could be a “PC” hire ??

If so, that’s embarrassing by 11w. If it’s something different, then maybe I missed something worse.

I don’t know...what did the removed comment state ???

HS
CALPOPPY's picture

So, pre tell, please do tell me: what was the original comment which was removed?

I don’t know the answer to that question. I didn’t delete the comment nor was I told what was deleted. But I do know that most comments are left standing, and very few are deleted or augmented. When they are deleted or augmented then there is typically a good reason for doing so.

I don’t know...what did the removed comment state ???

If you know what was removed, then please share. Otherwise you’re just making grand, conspiratorial statements without any evidence to the contrary.

Now wait a second, are you referring to the comments that merely questioned if this was a PC hire?

If so, you need to be careful before you throw the word “racist” around so easily. There is a hypersensitive PC culture which exists in today’s woekd, no doubt about it. So, if someone merely brings that up, it’s not racist. At all.

Now, I actually think Warren could be a great hire. But, I also think PC could have been involved, which does not make me “racist”.

Stop overacting. That comment was not racist at all.

This would be a slam dunk hire. One of the most respected people in the NFL.

Good for him.  I noticed it said that after graduating law school he practiced law with Mike Slive (former SEC commish).  He's been around a while and has a great reputation from what I can see.

If he can figure a way to kick Rutgers into the American, he will be the greatest commissioner in B1G history, lol

Have you ever seen a fierce animal who you were sure wouldn't bite? Because I haven't.

HS

But who's going to give the B1G that cold hard New York revenue? Fordham?

Tom Brady lost to John Cooper. Never forget.

HS
cafiero.3's picture

Rutgers gets a lot of crap (well deservedly in football) but the geographic expansion to the largest metro area in the country must bring in millions (more?) in revenue. NYC is not a stereotypical college sports town but the bars here on Saturday all have BTN on now, along with the thousands of B1G alumni who now get to watch with any basic cable package. Not only helps current revenues, but expands the schools to kids who never thought of going to a school in the Midwest (i.e. me)

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don’t know. Seems kinda random. The NFL is not exactly the standard I’d go by seeing how they treat their players (denial of concussions, refusing health benefits, caring less about their retirees, etc). Time will tell.

He seems to have very little experience with college. Also I have very little respect for Slive the guy is a snake.

The COO doesn’t interact with the players. He would be responsible for making sure ticket sales go smoothly, ensuring security is in place, contracts with vendors, working with tv networks, etc. From that context it makes a ton of sense.

HS
Sav45age's picture

It’s not random, look at his photo. He got the job due to the combination of; his resume, which includes no experience as an athletic director, his decision to wear a purple tie, and his cavalier attitude to post a photo with the aforementioned tie on crooked.

As noted, he worked with Slive way back when, so maybe he can get us on board with the conference letter chanting? B-1-G, B-1-G, ... B-1-G!

Warren started his career in sports law at Bond, Schoeneck & King, where he worked alongside former SEC commissioner Mike Slive to represent universities charged with NCAA violations.

Not sure how I feel about this aspect of Warren's work history (1990-91). Evidently he knows his stuff in that department, as SEC schools have been getting over on the NCAA for years.

Not fair to judge a persons character/capabilities based on their legal work in the past.

His father used to run the Fiesta Bowl and his older brother played football at Stanford in the early '60s. He was a very good small college hoopster scoring over 20 a game and was an NAIA AA and 2nd team Academic AA. Has both an MBA and JD

As was noted worked for a law firm repping colleges accused of NCAA violations (Delaney btw had worked on the other side in NCAA enforcement) , then was an agent to NFL players for a while.

Worked for Dick Vermeil at the Rams during their Super Bowl run, then to the Lions for a couple of years before going back into Law where he repped the Wolff family's purchase of the Vikings and then went to work for them in 2005 and has worked his way up there

He was part of the advisors Minnesota Gophers retained to hire their last AD 2 years ago, is a Board member of the Fiesta Bowl. He once donated $1 million dollars to the U of Minnesota's children's hospital

Given that the Commish role is primarily business and legal related as well as some "marketing", he seems like a good fit for me

Mr. Warren's curriculum vitae is impressive. A great candidate to build upon Jim Delaney 's BIG10 revenue successes and maybe, just maybe, bring the conference football have nots to a level of competitive relevance.  It is good to hire from outside the ruling clique to reinvigorate an organization.

Too much time spent at the North Heidelberg rather than the classroom. SSD 68-72

Despite all the experience and education this man has, I completely expect him to get the Gene Smith/Michael Drake hate treatment,  Which means that the hate is already there (for some reason) and anything even remotely perceived as a misstep will have these people calling for his head.

But my opinion is, LONG LIVE THE B1G!

I bleed scarlet...literally

Couple more things about Warren, His son is  TE for Miss St who redshirted in 2017 and played 5 games on special teams in 2018, His daughter went to Occidental College.

Father played football at ASU being one of the first black football players there and was once the vice mayor of Phoenix

If Delaney isn't leaving for a year, what's Warren going to do until then?  Will he stay with the Vikings or join the B1G now?  It seems curious to hire someone for a role that isn't open for a year.  Is there a chance Delaney goes into retirement early?

HS

No idea, but having a year to get up to speed and learn from the incumbent is good for all involved, should such a thing come to be.

If Warren wants to make a huge impression on Buckeye and other Big Ten fans, he better have a decent playoff plan to present to the Committee  and fight like hell for change.  It is a damn shame that both the Big Ten and Pac 10 have been left out of the playoffs the last two years.  Obviously, as it stands now, one Power 5 conference will be left out anyway because there are only 4 slots for 5 power conferences.  But, just a simple change to 6 teams would allow the 5 Power Conferences to be represented and one slot left for the 6th most qualified team.  Jumbo Jim seemed like he was not willing to go that extra mile for HIS conference.  Maybe, change will straighten this out!   GO BUCKS!

Good Hire in my opinion. There are 2 Immediate things that should be Top Priority for Kevin for the betterment of the Big 10. Delaney is too old school and likes the "traditional" nature of Big 10. He was never forward thinking.

1) Football Scheduling. Kevin needs to look after his conference like Greg Sankey does for SEC. Between the number of conference games and OOC scheduling- WINS are more valuable. Look after your top teams

Impact: The CFP has shown that its not about schedule strength for Power 5 teams...Only if you have losses and when you lose. This will help BIg 10 teams have more presence in CFP.

2) Big 10 Championship Baskteball Game move to saturday night or Sunday AM. As one of hte top basetball conferences- this game SHOULD NOT be an afterthought. The game is litterally goes on while the committee has already met and made the brackets. The show is right after.

Impact: Committee has shown that this game has no impact on seeding ( good or bad). But it does value other tourney champs ( ACC for example). We are still talking about humans here and they will make decisions based on a game they just watched. This will help tournement seeds for our Champs and runner ups.
