Good stuff; thanks Spooner

Really hoping we add another recruit (or more) this weekend

HS

Have this feeling there's going to be rapid fire new parts during June.

HS
LouBuck35's picture

The return of Spooner!  Good to see the Bourbon Trail didn't claim another victim and you made it out the other end.

I want a fall Saturday in Ohio Stadium..

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

Was scanning the list and just wondered if Jake Seibert should be added as a K to the big board. Sounds like the staff would greyshirt him if he committed but he is technically a 2020 recruit. Anyway, just a thought. Keep up the good work and here's to a huge June for Buckeye recruiting.

Edit: Add Ty Hamilton also now that he's been offered?

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

And probably remove Rosengarten as we are excluded from his Top-2.

Per Dohn, TE Cam Large has officials setup for Bama, UGA, and tOSU in June. Visiting for June 21 weekend which is his last official.

I know BG has said he thinks he will be in our class.

HS

Really hope so. Recruits are bailing from the state of California right now

HS

Flowe is a generational talent at LB and could be the #1 player in the class when everything is said and done. Getting him on campus would be wild.

HS
CardaleFTW's picture

I really hope Paris has a kick-ass senior year and/or Jack Sawyer continues to put up NFL Combine numbers. It's remarkable to me that in 20 years of recruiting rankings, Ohio State has not once landed the #1 player.

It's a beautiful day in Columbus, Ohio... and TTUN still sucks.

HS
BengalErnst's picture

Damn.. Pryor wasn’t #1?

Nicholas l Ernst

HS
BGSUBuckeye08's picture

Teddy Ginn and Pryor were both #2 if I remember correctly.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

Yup, Ginn was also #2...behind a guy named Adrian Peterson.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

Pyror was 2. That was an interesting class. Da'Quan Bowers was 1, Julio Jones was 3, Patrick Peterson 6, and AJ Green 7.

HS
BuckeyeBulldog's picture

Meh, it would be nice to have that bragging right but Id rather develop a player to #1 in the draft than pick up a #1 recruit. Gary was a clear #1 in his class and he wasn't that big of a game changer in AA. He would have been a first round pick based on measurables alone. Apart from Clowney I can't think of any other players that were both #1 in their recruiting class and the top draft pick.

HS
logamaniac's picture

theres a qb that is coming off a national title win thats going to be the #1 pick in two years.  Shit he probably would have been #1 this year.

HS
CLEbuckNUT's picture

That’s not always entirely a fair argument. The #1 recruit is usually the best player in the country regardless. The #1 draft pick is usually the best player at a position of need for that team.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Trevor Lawrence will probably accomplish that feat.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

Lawrence is certainly on that track, not to mention a potential threat to Archie's current status as the only two-time Heisman winner.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

HS
FieldsofJreams's picture

Trevor will be Archie's biggest threat possibly ever.  Dude is Peyton Manning good, they have a super-soft schedule and the Clemson hype is out-of-this-world right now.

HS
Smitty516's picture

Justin Fields will have something to say about that...

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

Right now, that’s idle boasting. Tua Tagovailoa is in a better position than Fields to keep Lawrence from winning two Heismans.

If Fields and Lawrence were running a 400m race against each other, Lawrence has already lapped Fields after just one loop, and Lawrence will likely only run three laps. Lawrence has already proven he’s worthy of the hype—he might’ve been a first round pick if he’d been eligible this year; Fields left UGA because he couldn’t unseat Jake Fromm as the starter there. He has a lot of catching up to do.

If Fields and Lawrence were running a 400m race against each other, Lawrence has already lapped Fields after just one loop, and Lawrence will likely only run three laps.

Listen man, I've never run track in my life, but I'm pretty sure that you literally cannot lap someone in a 400m race, lol

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

HS
NorthPoleBuckeye's picture

the only way to get lapped would be if at the start, a runner fell backwards and didn't cross the start line as the other runners crossed the finish line. Technically it would be listed as a Did Not Start (DNS)

HS
Ryan.Honeycutt's picture

I might be alone in thinking this, but I think the tua we saw in the NCG this year against Clemson is more accurate then the tua we saw when he took over the starting job in the NCG against Georgia... I mean he is still a good player, surrounded by elite players... that’s why last year I think he should have been 3rd in the heisman behind Murray and Haskins because those guys did more for their team... without Haskins we probably lose 3 or 4 more games... but tua could have an off night and BAMAs D could win won or juedy could take a 8 yard slant pass break 4 tackles outrun the DB s and score on a 80 yard TD PASS (tua gets credit for those yards too)

RyanPH

HS
Ryan.Honeycutt's picture

So I agree with SMITTY in the fact that I also believe Fields will have something to say about the heisman race and who should be favorite... if he is out there making plays, making his team better, willing his offense to move the ball when the D is struggling, then yeah he should be in New York as well

RyanPH

HS
Belliott's picture

No one is a threat until they win one. And even then, I just don’t know. Look at everyone who was going to:

Tebow, manziel, Lamar, tua (after one half of football). It takes a lot to win it twice. Good stats, good season, timing of your bad game, how many blowouts you have, the right narrative.

Then you have to do that again when everyone is waiting for the slip up.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

By threat, we’re talking about potential, which, as the saying goes, is another way of saying you haven’t done anything yet; in that remark, yes, you’re right: no one has won one one yet. But Lawrence’s accomplishments as a true freshman cannot be dismissed. In this day and age, in which the best players are cashing out after their junior/redshirt sophomore season, as Murray and Haskins did, for Archie’s record to be tied, someone would have to win it as a sophomore because odds are he’d be gone after three seasons (and his second Heisman). Tua could’ve been that guy last year; Lawrence projects as that guy this year.

Some of you guys sure get bristly over Archie.  Threat does not necessarily mean likely.

It's kind of amazing how Meyer and even Day have managed to come out of loosing on a top recruit only to pull in a higher ranked kid or someone who was a better fit. NPF was a huge win and Day pulled Vimahi seemingly out of nowhere after losing on Nester last minute. No doubt Fleming is a great player and he did have the moments where he was flirting with the hot teams but never to the point of any of the players you mentioned. I dont have any problem with making the most of your recruitment but some of these kids are a bit too good at playing the game for their own good. It's nice to see someone use the opportunity to find the best fit and not as a national fame tour before they even make a roster.

Our very own AE with the CB’s for Drennen to Stanford and Mookie Cooper to the good guys, these must be the ones he was talking about in the previous thread yesterday.

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

I love it!  I remember AE saying he was hearing positive things about Cooper.  He will be downright nasty in our Offense.

I didn't know that Drennen was looking at Stanford.  I can never fault a recruit for going there,

Fields of Dreams

HS

I remember he tweeted out that he got a 1430 on the SAT (which is the equivalent of a 31/32 on the ACT for those who are like me and never took the SAT). That’s super impressive, and I can’t blame him for wanting to go to Stanford with test scores like that. Good luck to him, and I hope Stanford works out (assuming we don’t end up pursuing him harder lol)

HS
Triv's picture

I never took the SAT, but if 1430 is equivalent of a 31 or 32, I'm not sure that's Stanford-level impressive. As an athlete he'd assuredly get in with it, but the incoming freshman class at OSU (as a whole, not the football program) had an ACT average of 30. I went to HS with a kid who got a 34 and got rejected from Duke. That score is certainly impressive from him, but it definitely wouldn't be enough on it own to get him into Stanford.

That being said, if I had been a top tier football recruit out of HS and Stanford offered me, that would be the one school not named OSU I would even consider. Never fault a kid for picking the Cardinal over the home town school.

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

HS
TheBadOwl's picture

I never took the SAT, but if 1430 is equivalent of a 31 or 32, I'm not sure that's Stanford-level impressive.

It's still very impressive, though. Probably closer to a 33 than a 31 if you had to compare it to the ACT.

While it might not be good enough to get him into Stanford without an athletic scholarship, it does show that he's a very bright kid. Shows that at least intellectually he'd be able to handle the academic rigors of Stanford. He could go there, be a star running back (and Stanford's had plenty of them lately) and get a phenomenal education. Hard to do anything but applaud him if that's the route he takes.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

HS
huffdaddy's picture

I can assure you that there are a number of kids walking around Stanford with 32 on their ACT who happen to be national class at something else (if not a sport than a musical instrument, computer science, dance, whatever). The ticket - for the Ivies + Stanford - is a high score PLUS being one of the best in your state at something else.

(Which isn't antithetical to your point either - there are a bunch of kids with perfect 36 who get rejected from Stanford each year - point is just that it's not that weird to get a 32 and get in there).

"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." - Nick Saban 1/2/15.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

As a top football player he doesn't need to have the scores to be higher than most people that get into Stanford, as you said. Drennen is a top football recruit for them and he's in the acceptance range regardless. There certainly are people at Stanford who got a 1430 on their SAT.

Their median SAT is 720-800 math and 700-770 reading and writing. So a 1430 coupled with being a top football recruit for them is a no brainer that he gets into Stanford. BTW their median ACT is 32-35. It doesn't mean anyone that gets in that range gets in obviously. I'm sure there are many people who got a 34 who get into Stanford and many who got a 34 who don't.

HS
All Right Now's picture

True story: I bought a car last year off of the guy who was head of the ACT. Really nice guy.

HS
ELJTSA76's picture

The SAT is now different. They added a new action so that the total possible score is now 2100 I believe. If it was 1430 out of 1600, I would say we should be impressed. Under the new format, a 1430 is probably average or slightly above average

HS
SFlaBuckeye13's picture

It went back to 1600 from 2400 a few years ago. They got rid of the writing portion

I've thought about Day and Hafleys ties to the West Coast and if that means more of those kids moving forward vs. maybe the Southeast flavor that Urban brought.  Not saying the Southeast is out of the picture because there's just too much talent down there, but definitely something to pay attention to moving forward. You've got Miller, Scott, and now potentially Milton and Phillips, to go along with possibly Ransom all from out west in this class alone.

FieldsofJreams's picture

The demographics of the West Coast/SW regions and the P12 melting into oblivion, have created the perfect storm for Day.

The recruiting base here is coming out of SoCal and Phoenix.  If the recruit doesn't want to go to UCLA or USC (Cal/Stanford is not in play for most), and then ASU or AZ;  they have no other options regionally.  Driving, to say Eugene, OR or Austin, TX, is not feasible; whereas a flight to CBus is maybe only an hour longer.  The rest of the P12 and to a lesser degree the B12, does not have much of a built-in advantage.

TLDR: Ryan Day is a genius; he is invading the West.

BG best guess 5/31

QB: Miller plus a second but not till prob later if at all

RB: Milton or Robinson. Trayanum second RB but watching visits. Has Sam Adams or Knighton as a possible 3rd combo type. Drennen is out for now.

WR: Scott, JSN, Fleming with Cooper moving past LV. New name to watch Rome Odunze (recently offered)

ATH: Martinez

OL: been told Paris told staff he's signing in December and will shut things down in a few weeks (presumably after official on 6/21). Wypler, James, and Leroux are all solid. Still not feeling Carmody (though Dohn said were not out) and same with Atterberry possibly. In good shape with Josh Fryar and Blake Fisher (though Fisher is 2021 unless he re-classified).

DL: Henry is on lock and KBJ is close to being the same. Close to putting Hamilton in the class too.

LB: Kourt Williams and close to CB for Melton. Not sure how to view Thomas.

DB: Makari Paige as probable (assuming staff takes him). Puncher's chance with Ransom. Feeling good about Phillips to go with Lejond.

K: Seibert

Guess that depends on numbers.  Close to the 25 if we get the names on that list.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

BG has the number at 27 or 28 for this year.

HS
Hanawi_'s picture

I think they need 3 CBs and 2 safeties. Assuming Martinez is one safety, then I think only one of Ransom or Paige would get in. I like Johnson. Or they could just try to chase Ringo and Ricks to signing day.

No TE in BG's list either. Think they would take 2, but maybe only one if numbers are tight.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

The plan is to take 2. He didn't have it in this update but he said before he feel it will be Cam Large and Lachey.

Lots of good notes here:

* Love that Wypler is still solid. Not that he's made any noise, but I think he's going to be great. With respect to Paris taking all of his free trips, which I completely support: he can't really be seen as a Buckeye recruiter when he's posting in LSU gear. It will be good to get him back in the fold 100%.

* KBJ and Cooper are two most welcome developments

* Knighton to pair with either Milton or Robinson would be my pick

* Defensive backfield still has a lot of question marks

He hasn't changed his tune since the post a week or 2 ago but when Givler (and Noon) visited him Givler said we weren't getting enough credit for where we stand in his recruitment in his opinion. That was after talking to Kelee and those around him.

He's definitely making it happen.   I'm predicting co-oc within the next 3 years.   With him bringing in top 20 WR's and Day bringing in top 5 QB's, the future on O is very bright.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Except recruits like Julian Fleming or Paris Johnson don't care how well you sell yourself if you come wearing a polo that says Temple or Toledo or Washington State, as opposed to one that says tOSU, Bama, or Clemson. Successful recruiters at big time programs leverage their program, not the other way around. The Mercedes salesman and the KIA salesman both know their customer base-and realize the silliness of trying to compete w/ each other.

You are correct about the technique-a great product will speak for itself, but a salesman will create the sale (with the understanding that no one bats 1.000-unlike a lot of fans, coaches and salesmen don't waste their time whining about what-ifs-there's always the next season/next recruit/next client to call on).

Did you ever consider that you or others may get downvoted because you can be extremely abrasive? Try being less antagonistic, and I bet less comments would be grayed-out.

Try to follow the commenting policy. Don’t be a jerk. There’s a link at the bottom of every page that takes you to the commenting policy.

There are a lot of people on 11W that vehemently disagree but don’t get comments grayed-out. Debate is welcome...just don’t be a jerk. Do a few people downvote due to a disagreement? Yep...it happens, and this is the wrong approach. Typically when comments are grayed-out it is due to someone being a jerk and/or violating the commenting policy.

The total silence over at Lions 247 about Fleming speaks volumes. The most truly hurt sports fans don’t log in and post with pitchforks in hand. They feel the dull apathy wash over them as they just stay away from the internet for a few days

HS
bd2999's picture

To be fair, we have seen similar things here. Cameron for instance. OSU still won in that exchange at the end but fans are passionate and sometimes that translates into stupid.

Did you mean Jackson Carman? He is an example of why over-fretting about one recruit is silly. NPF,Harry Miller,Paris Johnson,Luke Wyler-all just as good or better prospects than Carman at either G or OT.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Let's be honest: Carman let it be known well in advance of his commitment date that he would be happy to go out of state. He didn't cross the Buckeyes off the list, but he put it out there for everyone to marinate in.

HS

"Insiders" are never going to publicly/online admit that they were lied to by a recruit. Ask Bill Greene about '6 star Marcus Joyner". I could get on board with that!  I especially like the Milton pick at RB since he is on campus now, and most of these picks are not just a pipe dream... Fleming got the fire lit again today, and we just need Paris to stop flirting

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Per BG Paris has told our staff he's signing with us in December and that he's shutting things down and going back to helping lead the class. Said you should see that happen around his visit.

HS

I am on board with you Spooner, I would hate to have to blame it on you if it doesn't pan out that way haha... just kidding of course, thank you for bring the goods all the time where we can all read it here in one spot.  I think Paris knows he would be a fool to not ink it with the Buckeyes... good vibes all around for that to happen, he is such an important piece of this puzzle Day is solving

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Re-added Adams to possible RB. Added Mookie as 4th WR. Have Martinez as HB bc that's where I'm hoping they put him. Put Cam Large in at TE. Added a wildcard at tackle in Anton Harrison who's supposed to visit soon and added Josh Fryar as another G. Kept Evans on DL bc Givler said he's close to setting a visit and if/when he does we are a player for him. He's obviously #1 on my DL wish list list followed by Cowan then Craig/Hayes. Added Ty Hamilton as a SDE. Added Paige as a S opposite Ransom.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Just don't see room for him tbh. He's not a guy I would take over Kourt Williams or Mitchell Melton. He's a good player but I just like the other 2 more. Of course if the staff sees Melton as more of a DE possibility than I can see him in the class.

Also for those that care about such things, Kourt Williams is going to be reportedly getting a big bump on rivals rankings. So his overall 247 rating should see a good bump as a result.

HS

Notre Dame is a big player for Ransom as well. From everything I’ve read, Notre Dame and Ohio State are his top schools.

love what this high school coach has to say to some of these recruits. I honestly think someone like Jarrett might have to go to a tier 2 school if he keeps it up. The Clemson’s, Bamas, Georgia’s and Ohio States don’t need to put up with his drama. Kid will probably end up going to Mississippi state, Tennessee or Florida State. One of those schools that can’t say no to the kid.

HS
Upnorth_Buckeye's picture

The general rule of thumb is that nothing comes out until after the visit is over.  So typically Sunday, maybe Monday.  And it's because the people covering these things try to be respectful to both the kids and the coaches not to bug them during the visit.

HS
Stellar's picture

And when news does come out about visits it's almost always the exact same thing. It was great. He enjoyed the family atmosphere. He got along with the other players and recruits. His parents loved the acadmics. The coaches laid out a great plan for how they'll use him. Wash rinse and repeat.

HS
JarheadBuck's picture

Amen.  We don't need more "hey, the kid just laughed at a coach's joke" or "he seemed to love the steak dinner" posts during a visit.  After the visit, every kid will give some glowing comment.  "Loved the visit, awesome facilities, amazing coaches".  The more important take will come from coaches (who know if a kid and his family are really interested/impressed) and what the kid tells family/friends.  And those latter two items take a bit to trickle down to recruiting board "sources."

I don’t necessarily think so.

I think most people saw both him and Jarrett doing a lot of this nonsense...

i think coaches just think Jarrett is a can’t miss so they’re letting him play the games and still wanting him in their class.

I love how he calls them traditional schools. It's like he's fully aware of how inferior Kentucky really is. I actually think in many years they probably would. Or say if Fleming had picked Clemson or PSU. My guess is it's not worth the risk this cycle. They have the top WR and two other high 4* guys who have been rising in the rankings. It would be an all-time WR class with Jarrett but it probably comes down to if that would upset apple cart and I'm sure Hartline and Day have a good idea if it would or not.

I'm know that Pantoni knows what he is doing, but 14 official visits seems like a ton for one weekend. Probably the new normal, though. 60% of the top 50 kids in the 247 composite are already committed, so the calendar has been moved way up and  need to pack kids into a smaller number of weekends in spring/summer.

Kind of curious about Thomas. I don't think they can work out on an official visit, so maybe his offer is contigent on him working out for LJ and Washington at Friday night lights. Otherwise, it's odd that he isn't an official while Henry and Paris are.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Well too be fair Paris is already committed and I don't think they have to do much if anything with Henry, Williams, and Martinez since I think they're already in. Also wouldn't be shocked if Phillips is in that boat to. So the number is prob closer to 9-10 IMO that they have to work on.

I think he’s not being talked about enough. Really no huge glaring interest in any of the world beating recruiters like Clemson and GA right now. Relationship has been there behind the scenes. Get him on a visit. This would be a great LJ pull this cycle to show he’s still the man

Would love to see us score him. I actually went to Lee County High School in Sanford - where he's at. He's by far the biggest prospect to come out of Lee County since Jay Hollingsworth, RB that went to Duke. The conference was extremely competitive when they were in the tri-9, but they went div 3 recently and I'm not sure if they are still there or not.

Either way, my friends back home say the kid is legit.

A fellow Lee County Alum - when did you go there? Back when I was on campus (and yes, it is a campus) Nigel Blue was the big name. I reached out to some old friends who still live in Sanford and they all speak highly of Evans, though the expectation is he will stay local.

Milton visit a major success per BK. I don’t know why I’m interpreting it this way, but certainly sounds like we could be in front per this quote from his dad Chris

““We have to do our do diligence,” Chris said. “We gave our word that we would take those visits so we need to give them their fair shot.””

That last quote sounds pretty damn good for OSU.  Here is a tweet by Chris Milton shared by 11W’s Taylor:

Well we better be in the lead at this point because If were not then we’re out of it

The way I read this is he's basically saying "we want to commit right now and shut everything down but we told the other schools we would come visit so we will respect that."

HS

Exactly. Dan Rubin interpreted it as “When Dad talks about giving everyone a fair shot that’s a good thing. Pretty clear Ohio State has set the standard.”

Yeah, seems like he wants to do what he promised and go from there. Does sound like OSU is in the lead at the moment.

Was told this morning to crystal ball Milton to Ohio State. Gonna hold off a bit I think because the Georgia visit still worries me.

So Andrew you see this as a 2 team race with OSU leading?

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

Yes with LSU lingering still and Bama running fourth.

Sounds like we are in excellent position with Milton.  As far as UGA goes, aren’t they in on a couple of other 5* guys?

Andrew, what do you mean by “was told to crystal ball”?  I’m not sure of how this process works.   Thanks!

It's a prediction on where he will end up committing.

Gunner, sorry I think I wasn’t clear in my question.   I know what CBs are — but I was referring to Andrew’s statement that he “was told to” put in a CB.  What does it mean that he was told to do so?  Did someone tell him, “Hey you should....”?

Probably an "inside source" or someone close to Milton. Just what I'd assume.

Milton’s dad wasn’t very happy with jbook’s interpretation of how well the visit went and where things stand.

Well after looking at JBook's tweet i can see why. None of us thought this in the first place. Jbook is usually spot on, but he couldn't have been more off with that tweet and i think Milton's dad had every right to set the record straight.

““We have to do our do diligence,” Chris said. “We gave our word that we would take those visits so we need to give them their fair shot.””

I mean you only do diligence when you are close to a deal.  And I agree 100% with jbook's interpretation.  I'm not saying it's the correct interpretation but I took it as "we are making other visits since we promised we would do so"

Also, can we move this post to part 32 (the most current part although people keep posting in this one - I'm guilty as charged myself here)
