Gotta admit i was shocked at how someone with that much hype was so poor throwing the ball.  And  dont givt me T Pryor.. he was never hyped as competent throwing the ball like Fields was.

but he has a lot of potential and you can win with a running QB in CFB.  So a lot of potential exists.

You’re really going to judge his throwing acumen from a scrimmage after he was around the offense for just a few weeks?

HS
Ryan.Honeycutt's picture

FT, it’s alright man, he was probably saying the same shit about Haskins after last years spring game... Justin is going to be fine, I’m excited to see him spin it, the article says he wants to work on footwork and read progressions, ain’t nothing wrong with working on your craft

our QBs looked like a clown show in the spring game the year we ended up winning the national title.  So who cares how anyone looked so long as they didnt get injured during it.

Its just nice for the fans to get a glimpse of the team after a winter break and some young talent that might not see the field for a year or two anyway.

HS

I agree that the snap judgements based on a scrimmage were silly, but Fields' HS tape isn't doing him any favors in proving he can throw. I think the mobility of Fields will offset the loss of the Haskins deep threat, but there will be a drop off in the passing game (which there would have been with Martell anyway so I don't get why everyone is freaking out)

HS

Having a rocket arm and having pocket presence/savvy are two very different things. If you have the former you are lucky from genetics, whereas the later is what gives you college and NFL success. It doesn’t surprise me that Fields sees the value-and necessity-of improving this part of his game.

HS

He only completed 66% of his passes in high school. Clearly, that isn't an impressive enough display of accuracy or throwing ability. /s

Haskins was at 59% in high school with more INT's and fewer yards. So...

Haskins was 9-19 in the 2018 Spring Game. Think you’re overreacting a little bit off of one scrimmage man

/Haskins turned out ok.  I admire a young prodigy who seeks more instruction to improve rather than tell the mobile world how great he is.

I don't think he looked bad in the spring game. A few throws were off because of communication or lack of reps (the early slant, the corner route open in the endzone) but he also showed Haskins-esque arm strength a few times in being able to throw deep outs across the hash. And I never understood the complaints about the 98 yard pass. That was a throw not many college QBs can make, and he almost lofted it up there, which is why it was a hair late.

Basically all of the mistakes I saw were easily correctable and were not because of a lack of arm talent or understanding of the game. The variables are his film study, being able to throwing guys open, and increased touch. And those are things most young QBs have to work on.

The criticism Fields has received is bullshit. Most of it was from dummies who were Tate supporters pissed he transferred out so they jumped on Fields not putting up Tecmo Bowl stats in the spring game. Tates a 3rd stringer at Miami because his stats were far worse. Get over it,

Out of curiosity, I wonder who foots the bill for that. I’m guessing he does. Since he’s not allowed to work with his college coach.

From watching his features in that QB recruit show, it seemed as if his family was fairly well off.

I can tell you with 100% certainty his family pays for it or his coach is doing it pro bono with hopes he helps him get to the NFL and then will get paid. There is no chance in hell the boosters are paying nor is the University.  Justin's Dad is a police officer and not sure what his step mom does.

I don't even think Fields was 100% in the spring game after he dinged his hand off a defenders helmet. So when you see a couple of idiots talk crap about Fields throwing ability, pay it no attention.

Criticism was bound to happen. All spring it was reported how great this young man was and articles everywhere that in spring practice he was doing great things only to watch him struggle a bit. I think it was most likely a good thing he struggled some since he was just handed the position without actually earning it and now he may be more motivated as ever to get to work like he is doing now on getting better.  Doing the little things right will pay off. I also think it's a good thing that fans may temper down expectations a bit and let this young man develop. After all it's a new system and it takes time to know the players around you (strengths weaknesses and tendencies)on the field.

HS

"he was just handed the position without actually earning it"

Lmao. He drove two top 300 quarterbacks out of the program. He kept a third from coming here at all. That's earning it.

HS
allinosu's picture

Baldwin was here when Fields was given the most reps from day one.

HS
UrbzRenewal's picture

Probably because you give your best quarterback the most reps

Nothing was given to him. That's asinine.

HS
allinosu's picture

4-13 and the one TD should have been an INT it wasn't for a first year walk-on misplaying the route is your best QB. How the hell do you know he was the best the first day. BECAUSE OF THE PRESS and the 5* star blindness.. That's asinine. When you walk in an just give someone the most reps that is giving it to them. It was an NFL move which doesn't usually equate to the college. If you look at the rest of my comment you will see I believe it will workout in the long run (and I like that he is working hard on the little things)but it is risky in losing your locker room when somebody is brought in and just put first on the depth chart when these kids spend a lot of time in dorms bonding. Like I said he hasn't had time to prior to the spring game to get where he wants and I expect big things from him.

HS
BrewstersMillions's picture

Someone is always put first on the depth chart though, and then that person has a chance to keep that spot or can lose it. Someone has to start with the first team, based on everything we know about all QB's available, Fields is the one that makes the most sense.

Now whether or not he can actually lose the spot is another discussion.

HS

I understand that Brewster. You're right but I think until you have time to evaluate someone on your campus with the others I feel you go with what you had and let Fields progress up the latter. I think Baldwin got the message the first day that it wasn't going to be a competition but that's just an opinion.

There were also drops, passes tipped at the LoS, & terrible line plays. Let’s not be selective with our criticism.

HS

Dude, I wasn't criticism . I was defending the point that I don't think he should have been handed the keys the minute he walked on campus. It was said that he was the best of the group and I was referring that one couldn't tell that from the spring game. I also stated he had limited time before the spring and once he has more time with his offense things will improve. So be a little more selective with your criticism.

This site really needs controls, especially if you decide to critic anything. Becoming a mirror of the issues with people who dont agree with you in society. It discourages honest opinions or thoughts and is leading to less overall interaction on the site. Very sad.

Not really. People just like to be very selective with their criticism leaving themselves open for rebuttal.

Good on Fields for working on his craft, everyone at that level should be doing the same thing. Pretty great, I know he came under fire for his spring game performance but hey, he's just gotten here. Let's let it play out.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

HS
Buckeye06's picture

This happens every year and really every month.  People have some sort of love for certain players for whatever reason (Martell, Baldwin, Fields, McCall, Browning etc.) and if something happens that isn't to their liking, they kind of go off about it.

Martell and Baldwin transferred because Fields came in and was getting the #1 snaps.  You can say the EXACT same thing about Burrow last year if you want.  There are still "OSU fans" who think Burrow is better than Haskins, ignoring that Haskins set records that are mind-blowing when you think about them.  Obviously, Day and the coaching staff thought Fields was better going into spring camp, and gave OSU the best chance to win in their system.  You can say he was unfairly given the keys, or it should have been a QB competition, but that is just the truth about it

I wonder at times if fans on this site cheer for the Ohio State team, or just their favorite individual players.  There should not be 1 comment negative about Fields in this post.  He is literally doing additional work to improve to HELP our favorite college team, and people are complaining

Justin wants to be a great QB because he came to Ohio State fully knowing the expectations and tradition of the program.

Having played competitive football for over 20 years, sometimes a player can walk in the door physically better then another. I ran the 100 and 200m every year in high school. My senior year, a sophomore, running his first year, was faster and won state. After one practice of watching Art Schlichter throw, Rod Gerald (who was QB of the #1 team in the nation the previous year, going into bowl), told his coach he wanted to play wr because it was clear that he was better. Fields won the Elite 11, which is mostly based on your throwing ability and your QB acumen. Baldwin and Tate, and everyone else, could see it...

I think Justin Fields is just doing what he needs to do. He's a friend of Haskins and he knows the expectations. More power to him.
