fans had been talking Brad Stevens and Billy Donovan?!

Then they need to check themselves. Michigan is a fine program. They aren't the program that lures Stevens or Donovan away

They aren't a program that lures Stevens or Donovan from their college jobs let alone from the NBA!

Uh, I think I recall another B1G team’s fan base expecting to lure Stevens and Donovan when they had a coaching vacancy two years ago (and I don’t mean IU)...

If TTUN fans need a reality check, so do we.

I don't disagree with you at all. As a fans of a football team that is a legit top 3 blue blood program in the nation, we should be acutely aware of what one looks like and our basketball program isn't one. OSU hoops isn't the job before the job like some other smaller schools or mid-majors but its also not a destination that you look at no matter where you are in your career if it opens up. This isn't UCLA, KU, Kentucky, Duke, NC. Those are the programs that get anyone's attention anytime. OSU and Michigan aren't that on the hardwood.

UCLA no longer on that list.

But at least tOSU hired a coach with a head coaching background.

I don't give a damn for the whole state of Xichigan.

I forget the assistant’s name, but most Michigan fans seemed to more comfortable with him over anyone else.

This is definitely where I parked my car.

HS

Actually, we would do well with him as an assistant if he gets cut loose. He's purported to be a defensive wizard. Totally changed tsun after he got there. Heard Texas is already trying to poach him.

Time out.... I wasn't even considered.....

The only true worry we should have about this 2019 team is this:

Why is Sevyn Banks wearing number 12?

He doesn't want the job, he does color for the NBA on one of the networks . I was watching an NBA playoff game he was doing and he came out and said he wants  Howard as the new head coach.  Carry on.

HS
johnblairgobucks's picture

C Web is an awful color analyst on TNT. I feel dumber each time I hear him on a broadcast. Actually turned of the Raptors/Bucks game tonight in the 3rd quarter, to watch reruns of TJ.Hooker, because C Web and Marv Albert are lame.

They need to go with the assistant. Going from Beilein to Juwan Howard would be a monumental and depressing step down for them.

The CBS story link came back dead, TampaTom...the Freep ran a similar piece a few hours ago:

Howard and two assistants are still being considered.

Their standard M.O. would have them poaching Bob Huggins from WVU.

Although a step down from a proven HC like Donovan I think most UM fans would be quite happy with Howard.  If you're going to go after a guy without HC experience, he's about as good as you can find in terms of his NBA assistant experience, his fit with the program, and his expected ability to recruit.

Strength equipment is expensive & guarantees you nothing. A strong will is free & will give you everything you need.

HS
PhillyNut's picture

Not a splash name but neither was Bielein or Holtmann. It could work out for them having a young coach who has played and coached in the NBA. I think we tend to think of these guys from what we remember about them when they were college players when it was relatively recent.

Here's hoping they pick Howard. He wants to be an NBA coach but needs the experience so can't imagine it would be an extended stop.

You would think though that after the whole can't miss with an ex-player like Harbuagh ( and basically missing) maybe they'd be smarter to just go with the assistant and keep the same plan in place and not shake the whole thing up...

Most of the kids they would be recruiting probably don't even know who Juwan Howard is.. Heck the parents of these recruits were in their early teens when the fab 5 was a thing...  1991 was a LONG time ago..

Go Bucks!

Man, it was that long ago? Feels like it was closer to the early 2000s. Getting too old too fast.

I’m honestly surprised they aren’t looking at DeAndre Haynes closer... I know his experience is limited but I got to see his coaching and player development up close while I was at Kent State and the dude is legit. He’s going to be a good coach someday and some program will be very happy that ScUM missed on him.

HS

Why not just go with Trevor Huffman? I'll take Kent State Glory for $1,000, Alex.

HS
High Street Street Fighter's picture

Or how about "Mr. Kent State" Eric Haut. That dude is a KSU lifer and he's not even 40. Love that guy!

Haut, Trevor Huffman (and my guys Demetric Shaw, and Deandre) are from That State Up North.

Stevens and Donovan were always a pipe dream. I am completely fine with Juwan Howard. He's no Beilein, but supposedly he had a great rapport as a coach with players in the NBA.

HS
Blackcoffee's picture

Maybe the available college (current) head coaching pool is depleted, but it's a mystery why they are not looking at any as a replacement. Holtmann was a huge right pick for us, a mystery why they aren't pursuing an up and comer. They have the resources.

HS
GunnerBuck's picture

Looks like they're set to announce Howard. Not a bad hire but not what they had set their sights on, obviously.

Every fan base (including us) is guilty of over hyping their coaching level status.

I think we threw around some similar names before Matta and (definitely) before Holtmann. I also think we did it in football before hiring Tressel (from 1AA !). The Vest did quite well, especially compared to Cooper who was a "hot name" at the time.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

It's a high risk hire. Michigan did the right thing contacting Stevens, Donovan, etc. A guy like Donovan could easily be fired in a year and may have wanted to make the move now if a job he likes is available. Not contacting those guys would have been stupid.

The recent history of NBA coaches or NBA connected people jumping right into major college jobs hasn't been amazing. Avery Johnson and Chris Mullin are two examples that jump to mind. Neither were terrible nor great. The safest hires always seem to be coaches who start at a smaller program and push that program into the NCAA Tourny, win 20 games for a few years, and then jump to a top job.

This is not to say Howard won't work out. It is entirely possible he has a great basketball mind and figures out how to run a top program. People certainly seem to think highly of him. I just think the odds of success are much lower given the route he is taking and it's certainly a risky hire.

I guess I'm surprised because Howard has been down in Miami now for almost a decade. He does remember how cold it gets in Michigan, right?

AJ,  there is already a discussion thread up on MGO where the majority of responders want the vacated Fab 5 banners hung back up when Howard officially takes over the head coach position.

Oh I bet. I am sure they want Weber's number retired also.

So much hype for a group of players that didn't even win a Big Ten title.
