Third-Year Reset: Shaun Wade Poised to Be Key Player in Ohio State's Secondary As Versatile Defensive Back

11W cranking out the content today...

Feels like so many guys are so close to getting over the edge in either raising their level of play or finding consistency once they've done so.

Wade seems on an island (no pun) here, as he's shown flashes but has almost been limited by said versatility as called on by team needs.

I'm fine with a rotation, and getting Wade on the outside (field corner).

Keep the reads coming.

I had to run away high, so I wouldn't come home low...

Yep a lot are on the edge to leaving for NFL as well.  Time will tell they they develop enough to make the jump.  Let's hope for this season they all perform to expectations carry tOSU to some big wins and then on to the next level.

You win with people.

Would you say that Wade has the potential to be a Malik Hooker type free safety? I am still in awe of Malik's last season with the Buckeyes. Shaun seems to have similar potential.

I don't think Wade's role in this defense will be the same as Hooker's role was for Ohio State. Based on what we saw this spring, I'm anticipating a lot of single-high safety looks with Jordan Fuller playing as the deep safety and Wade playing primarily as a slot corner. Wade has the potential to do a lot of things well, but I don't think he'll play in center field regularly like Hooker did.

Thanks Dan!

As much as I'd love to see Wade have a lights out kinda year, that means he'd be more likely to make the jump to the next level. Oh, well, next man up.

I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.

If I see Annette on the field instead of this guy or Okudah, I’m going to freakin’ lose my mind

In Antoine Winfield I trust

You may have already lost it! ARnette is going to be starting, and for good reason. He improved last year, and will very likely keep improving this year.

Wade will play everywhere, so no worries.

arnette improved last year? where was i when this happened?  his "best" play last year was to hold or commint PI. teams picked on him all season.

Arnette receives a lot of unwarranted hate. He was inconsistent but he wasn't as bad as you and others make him out to be. Okudah was also fairly inconsistent last year apart from a good bowl game. Maybe instead of rooting against players, you could try rooting for them?

Buckslan, that's exactly right. Fortunately, we have good coaches making these choices, and not uninformed fans who see zero practice, watch games and then think they know better than the coaches.

... "versatile" ... "uncertainty".

White...Wade.

And there are 'more' that we no less about....

This is gonna be... 'interesting'.   ;-{)}

We're gonna hafta build a bigger bandwagon and a wayback machine for those noble fanatics who 'herd it first'... after.

The kid is a baller.   I’m glad they are looking at him at 3 different positions in the defensive backfield.   He needs to be on the field as much as possible.

^^^This. I find it really hard to believe that Wade is not among the best eleven on D. He needs to play and should only rarely leave the field, IMHO. Baller.

Wade and Okudah should make that secondary intense and terrifying this year. I have no reason to believe they're not going to be legit NFL prospects.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

So true. Wade & Okudah should be terrifying opponents this yr as tandem outside corners. Considering both players should be first round CB’s.... problem is Arnette stuck around so Wade doesn’t have a “home” outside.

Thus he will get bounced around and potentially nitpicked while working as a jack of all trades in our secondary, rather than honing his craft solely as a lockdown corner like he should be.

Guys like Shaun Wade and Brendon White are so important and so needed because of their versatility to do many things. Having a guy that can play slot corner and safety (Wade) and having a guy that can play linebacker and safety (White) gives this defense a plethora of options to defend spread offenses. As was stated early I expect a lot of 1 deep safety looks this year with both Wade and White on the field at the same time, especially when the offense lines up with 3-4 receivers or 3 receivers and a tight end. And again to point out the versatility of these players, if you had one down where there was a 1 high safety look that had a secondary of the 2 starting corners, Wade, Fuller, and White, on the very next play you could motion White or Wade back deep into the secondary and go back to a more traditional nickel defense. So many possibilities that we did not explore the past couple of seasons. I still love Schiano but his unwillingness to change up the scheme and run the same formations play after play was very frustrating.

Makes it interesting for the coaches with 6 starting caliber defensive backs and 5 positions. Okudah, Arnette, Wade, White, Fuller and Proctor.

Interesting signature line

I also believe we will see all of them in far more variations as our coaches test what works in game!

I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
