Anyone with a $5 USB mic can do a podcast the same day. He's probably working on some sort of cash-grab hush money scheme. Can't think of another reason to announce a tell-all and then wait 3+ months to... tell-all..

Once you get past the first 10 minutes of him rambling about philosophy and what the podcast was going to be about he actually gave some somewhat interesting insider info.

But...

its horribly produced (by who I’m assuming are his friends). There is no structure at all to it. He probably said 20 times “We’ll save that story for another episode.” Granted, the stuff he was teasing were some very interesting stories.

Ultimately I’m just glad there was nothing he had to say that threw the program or Urban under the bus.

HS
SchnauzerBuck's picture

To his credit he was at least articulate and coherent.  But if he feels like this a platform that people are going to flock to for his thoughts on social issues.....well.  No thanks.

Even when sober he still seems like a spiteful individual and I have a tough time figuring out what he imagines is to gain from this.  Too many bridges will be burnt if he wants a media presence outside of his basement podcast.

HS

If he is trying to be some "MGTOW/false accuser" public commentator, as he sorta implies in his opening rant...I'll be out like a bottle of liquor at Zach's crib.  Those channels and podcasts are a dime a dozen.

He was much more well-spoken than I anticipated him to be.  Of course some of this is scripted, but I felt it was presented well.  I liked his little trick at the beginning - which was done to both gain your trust and to prove a point. It's clear some of this will include rumors and things he's heard rather than facts, but at least he warns us when that's the case.  All in all, I enjoyed it.  I will keep listening more for the insider nuggets (Thomas, Urban) than the drama.

HS
BuckeyeInDenver's picture

You and I may have different definitions of "revenge"; ZS is a disgraced clown and Tom Herman has one of the best head coaching jobs in all of college football. Smith's comments on his podcast could amount to defamation of character if he can't verify the truth of his accusations against Herman. Whether or not he's an abuser or just an unstable alcoholic in a toxic custody battle--and I'm inclined to think the latter is more likely--he's clearly an idiot who can't get out of his own way.

HS
Triv's picture

Smith's comments on his podcast could amount to defamation of character if he can't verify the truth of his accusations against Herman

He literally aired the audio of one of the women Herman slept with... who claimed there were several others. Not to mention, the burden of proof in a defamation lawsuit is on the accuser. Herman would have to prove that ZS knew that woman was lying when he aired that audio.

Oh, so now y'all are believing what women have to say?

Not to mention, the burden of proof in a defamation lawsuit is on the accuser.

True, but Tom has far deeper pockets and can financially handle a lengthy court battle better than an unemployed divorced dad who now has to pay child support + alimony + legal dues for his own cases.

Oh, so now y'all are believing what women have to say?

Ahh... the classic "I disagree with you so I'm going to call you sexist" defense. Never gets old.

My point wasn't to claim that either this woman or Courtney is telling the truth. That audio almost certainly exonerates Zach of a slander lawsuit though because they'd have to prove not only that he never slept with her (his word vs hers is not enough to win a defamation lawsuit), but also prove that at the time he aired the audio Zach Smith knew the Flight Attendant was lying. Both of those things are borderline impossible to prove in court. But sure, feel free to twist basic understanding of law into a way to try and take the moral high ground if that's what makes you feel better lmao.

HS
MichiBuck12's picture

I know this might be a novel concept, but someone doesn't necessarily need to believe the woman in the audio in order to understand that Herman has no case for a defamation suit. It is virtually impossible for a public figure to win a defamation suit. If it wasn't, major news outlets would be up to their eye balls in defamation lawsuits.

HS
BuckeyeInDenver's picture

That phone call is hearsay and would not be admissible as evidence on its own. (I'm not a lawyer, but I am married to one). But yes, you are right that ZS would have to have known that the woman was lying. And Herman would have to prove that the false claim caused him harm, which it likely won't. Which is why the operative word in my post is "could."

HS
Triv's picture

I assumed you were referring to the aired audio as the basis for the defamation lawsuit, in which case that would be the main piece of debate of the entire lawsuit and would have to be admitted, no? Also not a lawyer, just slight understanding of defamation law since I see it discussed so frequently.

Also, one thing we have to consider is if Herman ever did actually cheat on his wife. If he did, and he sues and the case actually goes to trial, he runs the risk of perjuring himself and facing criminal charges if it comes out he actually did and lies about it under oath. I just don’t think a lawsuit is in Herman’s best interest and Smith knows that

HS
GetBuckedUp's picture

I listened to the podcast and think it was good enough to keep me interested in listening again. He's been in the college football scene for over 10 years and I'm sure he has plenty enough good stories from behind the scenes and I'm 100% interested in hearing them.

I know a lot of people have ill will/hate towards Zach because of the things people "said" he did but I've really tried to keep an open mind when figuring out my side. Remember, every side has two stories . The problem with a majority of society today is people are guilty until proven innocent. The media is the biggest contributor to this. Everyone is so quick to judge and react without hearing every fact presented.  Any prominent figure can come up with some BS and broadcast it through the media and it will be an instant hit. The opening he used was a great example of this.

I liked how he said he knows he messed up. He admitted to is faults. And he said he should've been fired in 2015.

Really impressed with how he presented himself. Did't come off as an angry m out to get you, fired up type of person. Which is what I think most people were expecting,.

HS
Belliott's picture

Every story has 2 sides. Doesn’t mean they’re good. Fascists and nazis thought they were right. Wife beaters and rapists often think they’re baited into it. Doesn’t mean their side deserves to be heard.

HS
Triv's picture

Might be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure Courtney signed an affidavit stating the Zach never physically abused her as part of the resolution of the restraining order charge.

Zach Smith is undoubtedly not a good person, but I don't think wife beater is a fair label for him at this point.

HS

Unless what he said about Herman is 100 percent true, ZS might want to hire a lawyer.

HS
Triv's picture

Herman would have to prove that Smith knew the woman who told him he slept with Herman was lying, and then aired the audio anyways. Slander is such an insanely difficult thing to prove, and since he has the audio of another woman claiming she slept with him (as well as claiming several others did too), Herman has almost 0 case.

Can anyone provide the cliff notes on some interesting stories that he had to share about his time at OSU?

HS
BGSUBucksFan's picture
  • WR room was a dumpster fire when he took over, Mike Thomas is to credit for it becoming elite - his work ethic and drive was second to none and it rubbed off on the other guys
  • Meyer asked Devin Smith how many balls he caught on JUGS machine, he said none. Meyer proceeded to tear a new one in both Zach and Herman and told them both they were fired. When Meyer walked away, Herman turned to Zach and said, "Better get them on the JUGS machine"
  • Adidas is the reason Tyjon Lindsey ended up at Nebraska. More to come on that later.
  • The Twitter war with Nebraska WR coach started because Zach was tweeting about Trevon Grimes, Nebraska coach thought it was about Lindsey and caught Zach completely off guard. More to come on Grimes's story later
  • Said his last performance review was great and that Meyer and him had a 3-year plan for him to become a head coach. Said he treated all coaches like that - was a true leader and developer of coaches.
  • Said his recruiting success boiled down to being real with the kids and not feeding them regurgitated BS like many coaches do. Told the kids he could go on Twitter or wherever with anything he said to them because it was truth

I'm sure I'm missing something, but most of the rest of it was drama nonsense.

HS

I found all but the first 11 minutes very entertaining:

  •  He's got a good voice radio/podcasts.
  •  Charismatic - I can see why he was one of the top recruiters in college football.
  •  Mike Thomas's transformation into a top 3 WR in the NFL.....really cool to hear about his work ethic.
  •  Background on Trevon Grimes recruitment and how the twitter battle with the Nebraska WR coach started.
  •  Urban Meyer stories particularly the one where he fired both Zach and Tom Herman for a few minutes after learning they hadn't been using the Jugs machine with the WR's.
  •  I am VERY interested in hearing what he alluded to about possible shenanigans Adidas and Bishop Gorman/West Coast football. He said if you believe stuff happened in college basketball then you should hear about what they did in college football. Okay NOW you have my interest.
  •  IMO, this is must see stuff if you're a college football fan----but especially if you're an OSU football fan.

If this stuff is true, then all the MENSA stuff doesn't really translate into practical life. Putting the moral pillars aside for a second. How are you going to cheat on a wife as gorgeous as Michelle with old flight attendants? Herman may be really good at math, but he stinks at discerning what women are most valuable in his life.

After proofreading the above paragraph, I have come to realize that those guys probably are smarter than me.

I listened to the podcasts. There were some interesting insights for Buckeye fans. Zach said he should have been fired after 2015. His football-related insights on Ed Warriner were interesting. There was a lot of talk about Tim Beck being the problem in 2015 and 2016. Zach said Warriner was the problem. It sounds like Warriner is not a beloved figure.

Zach has brought out personal stuff on Herman and Warriner in his podcasts. He obviously has an axe to grind with both. Given what we know about how the Herman’s were involved last year, I wonder if recruits or assistants will be hesitant going to Austin. A lot of folks have or have had personal issues or have close family members who have issues. Sometimes the head coach will know about those issues. Could an assistant or recruit who has had personal issues hesitate on an offer from Herman knowing his baggage might end up relayed to the McMurphys of the world?

Zach said she wasn't a good person and treated people poorly. Had Warinner by the balls b/c he cheated on her -- and said out loud to some players that she gets the credit card and does what she wants because she stays married for the money. Once Ed got fired, she was livid that Zach still had a job and went out of her way to try to get him fired and ruin him (similar to Michelle Hermann in some ways like that). At least, that's kind of what I recall from listening to it a few days ago.

I’m sure he made mistakes but when your own mother calls you a liar that is pretty damaging unless she’s a nut job as well. My mother loves me dearly, but has never had problem telling me when I’m wrong. In HS, a group of my friends totally ransacked our friends aunts house while they were out of town. We basically drank all their booze, they had a very nice man cave with a full bar. It was like a brothel for a week. Long story short all of our parents paid the bill. Each of of us had to clean the house under the supervision of the owners, I couldn’t look them in the face. They even charged us the dry cleaning of all their bedroom linens, lol. My point is our parents didn’t fight it or defend us blindly. $80 each was charged for each kid, there were 12 of us. $960 was a nice chunk of change in 77, lol. Would have been a good down payment on a trans-am or z27, which were around $8000 then. Young and dumb. That old cliche really does apply to me, I should be dead or in prison. But as my uncle once told me it’s not how you start in life but how you finish in life. Everyone can achieve redemption if you truly want it. Even Zach Smith. Having said that, how he was fired was wrong but he should never have still been coaching after all the BS. Surely Earl would have understood had Meyer fired him in 2015. I can’t comprehend looking the other way @ work like Meyer and Gene did. I really think it’s unfair to fire someone retroactively like that for violating a restraining order that was obviously a setup by a scorned women. Had it not been for the Strauss scandal, Zach Smith May still be coaching. Fortunately we have a more deserving guy in his place. And to tell you the truth I don’t believe Hartline being groomed for coaching was a coincidence. I really think it was already in the works before the no contact violation.

I wouldn't go that far! I would say that he has been the victim in a knee jerk reaction society. The whole process last year was a mob lynching on the media's part. The topic of beating your wife is not something that anyone is going to defend (nor should they). But in today's (or last year's) race for headlines and clicks no one seemed interested in looking at the evidence. For the, with the number of time the police were involved and he was never charged with anything pointed to a situation where 2 crazy ass people couldn't coexist. That said, he is one of those crazy ass people and he seems to openly admit his part in that toxic scenario.

This pod cast is interesting. I am really interested in the football topics and some of the behind the scenes stuff. I am also listening to this with a grain of salt. He clearly had an ax to grind with Ed and Tom. Smith destroyed Ed's football knowledge but IMO got petty when he brought up Ed's wife and his perceived vendetta against him and him highlighting the flight attendant's comments about Herman being bad in bed.

Much like I viewed the all the stuff last year during the investigation and the media coverage of this, I'm paying attention but this podcast is his side of all these situations. He has pointed his finger at many others and not many specifics of his own short comings. Only about his "eeeelite" WR's and how Meyer clearly thought his was the greatest WR coach ever cause he had him on a 3 year plan to be a head coach. Obviously, the short comings of his "eeeeelite" WR core was Warinner's fault! Yes, can't argue he recruited some great ones but its pretty strange that they didn't actually deliver till after he left, must have been some one else's fault.

Not sure they’re ever introduced. Just a bunch of “yes” guys who seem to be sharing a single mike that is considerably closer to ZS.

He would do well to get a co-host who has something (anything) of substance to add. Otherwise, he’ll run out of rant topics and war stories and have nothing but his no-name lackeys to prop him up.

I'm betting Damian Prince was the recruit Zach was talking about where Warinner showed him Jamarco's PowerPoint. All of the crap Zach mentioned just goes to show that Urban should have canned this guy after year 1: Zach having to call plays in the scrimmage, awful recruiting, awful treatment of targeted people, etc. What a joke.

Also interesting: Zach was offered a job by Alabama. Of course he doesn't say what the title would have been, but that's likely either a lateral move or a promotion.

Not a bad episode that came out today. He said that Percy Harvin was the best player that he ever coached, but did whatever he wanted to do. To the point that Pete Carroll called Meyer and asked how he could reel him in and kind of get control of him and Meyer pretty much said “good luck”. As Triv said above, he’s probably going to go scorched earth on 11W later in the series so I’m guessing there will have to be a part two to this thread at some point.

Basically, that when he was in college, DJ was involved in some serious criminal activity, which included breaking into someone's house, pistol-whipping the resident, tying her up with duct tape, etc. Listen to the podcast, I think it's about 34 minutes in.

Again, I have no idea about the veracity of those claims, one way or the other.

HS
BuckeyeInDenver's picture

If I recall correctly, DJ wrote about his arrest on his own campaign website when he was running for office. It’s not a skeleton on his closet at all; it’s the opposite. He’s been up front about it for a long time.

HS

I don't read anyone's campaign website, much less for someone in another state. So, yeah...it was news to me.

OK, so maybe "skeletons in the closet" wasn't the correct phrase.  How about "checkered past" or "previous criminal history?"  That work better?

I'm not trying to take a shot at DJ or anyone else here, but if you are going to be critical of someone's behavior in a public forum (such as the media, online, etc.), better make sure you're on solid ground yourself.  Like mama always said, "When you point the finger at someone else, there are 3 others pointing back at you."

  • New things I learned on Episode 3: i) Adidas west coast recruiting - I had no idea, ii) the sign the GA's hold up on the sideline is all bull shit. Really? I had no idea...I always thought they used it for signaling in plays, iii) Urban stories about how hard he pushed his assistants to the point of him being an outright dick head if he did this in the "real" world which I can attest to thru a friend who is best friends with Fickel - and Urban did some effed up shit with him namely right after the birth of one of Fickel's kids (but it sounds like that's just how Urban pushes all his assistants).
  • Thanks Zach. I can honestly say his podcasts are the most interesting things I've heard about college football----EVER, and I can't wait to hear about his SEC stories, and the best stadiums to visit as a college football fan.

Yes sir I just noticed that so I just edited my comment.

I can't wait to hear Episode 4----the Zach vs. DJ stuff has the makings of internet gold. It sounds like it's heading in the right direction, too. Namely, there won't be a lot of name calling (hopefully) - I just want to hear them give each other some good natured ribbing - kind of like how Howard Stern used to give people some shite in his early radio days.

I'm just looking for some humor - nothing mean spirited. Both Zach and DJ have some skeletons in their closets - just don't be total assholes about it, but pulling each other's junk about it could be funny.

HS
High Street Street Fighter's picture

If Zach is reading this: fantastic idea about telling UF and SEC stories - that opens up a whole NEW viewership diversifying your listeners into the SEC. You just got to let those SEC fans know about your podcast and how you will discussing the SEC - get on FINEBAUM, get yourself talked about on the big SEC football message boards.

Good luck. I strongly believe that EVERYONE deserves a second or third chance.

What negative things has he posted about OSU? On the contrary I think he's been extraordinarily positive about OSU in general - and specifically about individuals like Urban, Day, Beck, Schiano and Hartline. He's only been negative with certain individuals such as Warriner, Drake and Herman----and you know what, that's fine by me, no one should be above criticism and only someone like Zach Smith, a person with no future in big time college football coaching, has the freedom to tell the unvarnished truth about people.

HS
cledaybuck's picture

See that's the thing.  I don't know if he is telling the unvarnished truth about people.  I believe his telling the truth as he sees it, and I don't trust Zach Smith's character enough to trust Zach Smith's words about anything.

HS
Eph97's picture

Yes, already saw that UGA fans were VERY interested on his tidbits he revealed about Dan Mullen.

HS
High Street Street Fighter's picture

It was interesting to hear Zach say that Urban and Mullen were not buddy-buddy. because as a fan, you always think that the HC and his assistants are best friends. But if you think about it, Urban and Mullen are both alpha males - and even though Mullen reported to Urban, two extreme alpha males are often times going to butt-heads.....just cool to hear it from an insider like Zach....you'd NEVER hear this from a writer like Pete Thamel, and the army of other sports writers because 1) even those guys don't have true insider access, and 2) they are very careful not to report something that might get their access to those coaches' programs cut-off.

I'm dying to hear Zach's stories about UF---particularly about Aaron Hernandez, SEC recruiting stories, and EVERYTHING about the MNC game against OSU---everything before, during and after that game. What did UF coaches think about Troy Smith, did they hear anything about him hitting the Heisman dinner circuit too much, etc. etc.

You're absolutely right about Zach being born for the podcast world - the dude knows how tell a good story. I did find his discussion about Barstool Sports to be very "arse-kissing" almost like he's angling for a future gig with them. Which is awesome - everyone should always be out there hustling and promoting themselves, but I wouldn't be surprised if ends up at Barstool someday.

HS
Bucks2TheNatty's picture

Barstool burned the Zach Smith bridge during the saga last year. There is exactly a zero percent chance Zach Smith ever does anything for Barstool.

HS
High Street Street Fighter's picture

Hmmm. That's interesting and not what I expected because I) Zach tends to hold grudges against folks who he believes kicked him when he was down last summer and ii) he pretty much all but asked them for a job in Episode 3.

HS
Bucks2TheNatty's picture

I listened to episode 3 too. Zach definitely praised Barstool in the episode because they definitely have similar philosophies about what their platform is and not being afraid to speak their mind and have fun with everything. But Zach didn’t give off the impression that he was like a loyal stoolie or anything. Zach had a lot more stuff to worry about than Barstool back when the whole mess went down so I doubt he saw much of what they said about it. Barstool was not kind to Zach, Urban, or OSU and Barstool in general hasn’t always been kind to OSU so I doubt either side would have much interest.

Zach Smith is in the same category of Jose Canseco...unlikeable personalities that have knowledge of a lot of things (and people) that the general masses don't want to admit are true.  Overall I'd give the Podcast 4.5/5...he loses me at the end of each episode with the "Go F yourself San Diego" sign off...too sophomoric for a fairly smart Podcast.  I like that he takes listeners questions & expands upon various topics he touched on in previous episodes

Also, does anyone know who's on the show with him?  They're never really acknowledged nor do they seem to be "in the know"...they're hearing the stories for the first time as well.

HS

I'm know that I'm not the only person on here who has listened to each of Smith's podcasts, but for those who don't listen, here are Smith's predictions for Urban Meyer's USC staff, which is where Smith says Meyer is headed... soon, and with multiple current Buckeye staff members/coaches.

*Predicts Meyer's USC staff will consist of...

Justin Frye, OC (currently at UCLA). Smith "guarantees" that Frye will be on Meyer's staff

Dana Bible, QBs (currently at UCLA)

Keary Colbert, WR (currently at USC)

Tony Alford, RB (OSU)

Corey Dennis, TE (OSU)

Morgan Scalley, DC (Utah)

DJ Durkin, Co-DC, or ST Coord.

Chris Ash, (secondary coach) Rutgers

Sean Cronin, DL (USF)

Greg Burns, CB (USC)

Marotti,

Pantoni,

Reggie Bush, Dir of Football something or other

No mention of DJ Byrnes, or whether someone with a lick of sense that neither Smith nor Byrnes have advised going separate ways before things were said that couldn't be denied at a deposition.

You may have posted before, but what is your take on the chances UFM ends up at USC?

“Being average means you are as close to the bottom as you are to the top.” John Wooden

HS
kmp10's picture

Personally, I believe about half of what Meyer says, so yes, I think he'll coach again, and while I cannot fathom how or why Clay Helton has the job, USC will almost certainly be open six months from now... and I think Meyer will be their guy (I hope I'm wrong). The fit seems perfect from the outside looking in... the best weather in the US, by far, beaches, palm trees (what the family loves per all the reports), elite recruiting state, and a spotlight in LA unlike anything any other college program can offer, which his wife would really love. I also think somewhere around 2025 USC's football program will be involved in something defined as unpleasant, possibly bordering on improper, and Meyer will be at the center of it... and then he'll "retire" for the fourth time in his career, but I think his next retirement will truly be the end.

None of this is to say that Meyer wasn't screwed by Ohio State and its administration last summer, because he was, but had he dealt with Smith as he should have in any number of Smith's previous indiscretions, he would still be the OSU coach - headaches and all - so it's not all on Drake and the BoT... just most of it for folding like a wet paper towel under the weight of Courtney's bullshit allegations and the media's bloodlust.

He can do whatever he wants. But after all that talk about the cyst as the main reason for his retirement, along with collaborative efforts by his wife on Twitter and Cris Carter on ESPN, who literally said if he continues coaching he'll die because of the cyst, I'll have a hard time believing anything that comes out of Meyers mouth from here on out. And, I'm definitely going to cut Florida fans some slack as well for their outbursts against him. Again, if this turns out to be true, then he'll definitely be a good fit at USC with that type of character.

Again, it's a free country, but damn man. Just say you were ticked at Ohio State and that's why you left. I would have understood this. Don't take folks on an emotional roller coaster about your health and then snicker at them while collecting a new football paycheck in a new zip code.

The Ohio State University was your supposed home. Be honest about why you leave, Urban.

If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.

HS
Bucks's picture

Respect the opinion as it is shared by many, just don't agree/understand it. Didn't with Florida fans either.

Urban isn't indebted to me. He isn't bound or obligated to do anything outside of agreed to contracts.

If he chooses to return to coaching, that doesn't mean his cyst issues aren't legitimate concerns. In the same vein, if a big reason he called it quits was due to the University handling (which I do believe played a huge part), I actually THANK HIM for not publicly saying so. The impact against this university and athletic department would have been far greater.

Past all that, speculation of him coaching again is going to run rampant for years to come. Don't care what ZS says, or anyone else.

If he coaches again, I still thank him for his service to the university, the upgrade to the football program, the Title(s) & a great run.

HS
andretolstoy's picture

He's not indebted to me about working anywhere else. But he sort of is about being truthful about it. That's my University. I'm an alumni. He owes it a little more respect. Again, this is ONLY if he overstated the health issues. If someone goes on national TV like Cris Carter did on his behalf, and says "if he continues to coach, he'll die" that means there's a legit concern and if he coaches again, then there really wasn't. His wife also alluded to this being "too much".

I think I'm owed honesty. If he doesn't give it. He doesn't give it. I'll get over it. Like I said, he'll always be my THIRD favorite coach at The Ohio State University. I am grateful for upgrading the program. And I'm certainly glad he changed his recruiting ways (if what Smith says is true).

But, if he does coach at USC. I certainly will not become an automatic SC fan. Heck, SC won't even be my favorite PAC12 team.

If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.

I've listened to Smith and one of my problems with the whole Urban to USC rumor is the last time the Trojans had a running QB, his name was Vince Evans back in the 70's. Urban has said repeatedly that his QB's must be able to run. Well, there's no one on USC's roster that can run the way Meyer wants them too.

Smith's podcast would be more enjoyable if he stopped swearing so much. He's borderline vulgar with his language.

Smith has trouble staying focused on what he's trying to say and wonders off in different directions too much. He was talking about Gibson's recruitment, then got sidetracked on how unfair the NCAA is. Back to Gibson and then back to the NCAA and so on. Maybe this will improve as he gets experience.

Basically Torrance's tutor was hitting on him hard, and some consensual stuff may have happened.  Torrance had a GF at the time though and cut it off, then OSU found out the tutor was trying to hook up with a football player which is a Cardinal Sin in that game and fired her.  Once she got fired, to retaliate she claimed that TG had sexually harassed her months before and used a snapchat taken on her own phone as evidence.  Title IX basically kicked TG out of school based on the accusation.

What line was crossed, and how did you come by this clandestine information? I'd be surprised if Gibson's behavior wasn't maybe borderline inappropriate in some way... he's a teenage horndog, like all of us were... but as an 18-year-old young man, when a female you find attractive is clearly interested in you, well, it's male nature to pursue that person. And if she's the same age, or older, I'm not sure Gibson's punishment was proportionate to the 'crime,' whatever the crime supposedly was.

Are we really taking Zach’s word as the whole truth? And that Ohio State is going to toss a kid out of college over a fictitious allegation? Did you stop to think maybe athletes aren’t allowed to be involved with their tutors to begin with?

Last summer Zach was widely regarded as an awful human, now he’s someone incapable of lying?

If I remember correctly, the Snapchat thing was more invasive and inappropriate than ZS described. For one thing, ZS suggested that TG just saved the picture to her phone, but I don't think that's correct. I believe he sent a Snap of her ass to a bunch of other people without her permission. It's been so long since I even thought about TG that I don't remember the details beyond that--sorry--but regardless, that's not an okay thing to do. Whether she later used it against him in bad faith is a separate issue--as is the question of whether the punishment fit the "crime"--but he was an adult and should have known better, and it's disingenuous to frame what happened as merely "flirting." That narrative minimizes the fact that he violated her privacy and autonomy. And again, we can have a separate discussion about the degree to which that transgression caused real harm, but to brush over or simply omit those details in the way ZS did diminishes the credibility of the "TG was an innocent victim of a paternalistic bureaucracy" argument.

HS
logamaniac's picture

thats the version I remember as well, add in revenge porn now being a legal issue in almost every state (including Ohio) and its something the university probably didn't want to deal with.

HS
TSwerve's picture

I was un aware this side of the story , like I said if what ZS said was true then Gibson got a raw deal, if it’s more to this story that’s just a shitty thing to do and he should have been punished. And I can reason with the fact that the University probably would just want to wash their hands of the situation. Unfortunately that does nothing to help a kid who made a dumb mistake who comes from a shitty area, who will probably never get to showcase his god given talents. I say that’s a loss for everyone.

From what I remember, he sent photos from his phone around campus and someone sent it to her and that's why they accepted it on her phone. Smith is telling the truth but leaving out important details. a good liar mixes truth with the lies so people eat it up. I'm waiting on him to convince some on here that the earth is flat by mixing in some real science with fiction.

That's good point that I wish I could clear up but it has been a long while ago. I was thinking that it was in one of the articles by the staff and another post linked it from another site. The thing is that TG got into a mess at his HS right before he came to OSU, then the problems at three different colleges before things not working out (attitude)at the professional level. His own mother told the press that she wanted Urban to teach him to be a man and not just being the man. She originally refused to let him come home after he got into trouble. It all can't be the world is out to get him.

HS

Urban had a similar reaction to the Noah Spence suspension.  He doesn't like to lose good players.  Go figure.

HS
Crowd Threatening Bauserbombs's picture

this implies Meyer cared about TGs deal because he was supposed to be good? Maybe only for that reason? Spence had addiction issues. Imagine not wanting to punt a kid  who had addiction issues... what a success-driven jerk!

Actually, it implies nothing more than what was said. Any inferences are the responsibility of the reader.

This same thing happened when I was in school to an OSU player who ended up transferring to Louisville. I was an OSU athlete for a lesser sport but shared tutors with other athletes at the Younkin Center. A tutor wanted to be romantically involved with him and decided to try and frame him when he broke things off. He was found to be innocent but the damage was done and he had to go.

I have other great stories from the Younkin Center including Cris Carter always trying to bail out Duron when he refused to complete any course work.

ZS has a really big opportunity to turn this into a top 25 sports podcast. I never thought I would be saying that. I obviously would not be able to attach my name to this publicly as many of you are familiar with my line of work but if I was managing Zach I would offer the following advice. Hope you see this Zach:

1. Ditch the yes men cohosts and bring in a "straight man" sports media guy. The guys he has on there now add nothing to the show other than just saying "wow thats crazy" to Zach's stories. There has to be an out of work sportscaster that would jump at the opportunity to go on M2S podcast even considering Zach's infamy. I just worry because the show is going to have to expand beyond the 2004-2017 era of teams coached by Zach Smith. Need a credible sports guy on there to make this happen.

2. He needs to realize which I'm sure he does is that no main stream advertisers are going to touch his show. Ever. I would be targeting gambling sites, male enhancement companies and shit like that. They pay a lot, especially the gambling companies. Basically look up porn websites (for research lol) and see what non-porn companies are advertising there and there are your target sponsors.

3. Let the personal shit go and let the "No bullshit, behind the curtain of NCAA athletics" theme grow. Keep the swearing, the real talk, and all the stuff that makes M2S a unique college sports pod, and cut out the rest.

4. Get a young intern to run their social media for now. It's really struggling. They should be filming the recordings and cutting choice clips so that the content can be shared. Huge missed opportunity not having clips of some of the other bombs dropped on the show filmed and being shared all over the internet. If you don't have the budget to film, then slap the audio clips over a relevant picture and go that route. They need someone on the team that understands the internet.

Not sure how many of y'all took the time to listen to the phone recordings that Courtney Smith posted on her blog (or the videos she posted), but I did, and ZS is a piece of shit. There is no getting around that fact. If you want to argue that CS is also unstable, fine, but if you are a person who thinks ZS is actually just a good dude with bad luck who has been unfairly maligned and railroaded by a vindictive ex, watch/listen to those recordings and see if you still feel that way. He needs professional help and should not be around his children until that happens. If you've been unfortunate enough to have malignant narcissists/abusive alcoholics/etc in your family, ZS' behavior in those recordings will probably be uncomfortably familiar.

HS
BABuckeye's picture

Yeah, I think it’s been well established that this thread is not about ZS the person; rather, it’s about the behind-the-curtain info.

So Courtney learned Zach was having some success, so she started her own blog just to post stuff to tear Zach down? Again? Wow, she won’t quit. It may be warranted, but she really hates the guy.

They are still a toxic duo. Beyond sad; it’s tragic.

Here we go again.  First, it sounds like you have oersonal experience and for that I am sorry.  Isn’t it possible they are both pieces of shit? Why does one have to be the victim? They can both be the perpetrator and the victim.  She seems just as insane to me, and they’ve both been accused of being wreckless drunks.

Even agreeing he is a total piece of shit especially when it’s respect to how he treated his wife doesn’t mean everything he said in his podcast is a lie or that we can’t enjoy the insight.

Quoting myself here in response. I think it's probably fair to say that both of them are unstable, as I said above. I'm responding to the people who think that ZS is entirely innocent and the whole thing has been concocted by CS. It doesn't sound like that's your position, though.

You could say the same thing about half of the parents in the US. They start families for all the wrong reasons. Next time you hear a young couple discussing their desire to have children, ask them why they want children? There will be a 10 second uncomfortable silence, guaranteed. Most think they want to have kids because that’s what’s typically expected. Shouldn’t have children till both are well into their 30’s imo.

MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS

HS
tbdbitlbuck's picture

Meh, I think that's true for some, but I had both of my kids in my 20s and it's pretty nice being 34 years old in my prime earning years and not having to pay daycare anymore.

Also both my kids will be out of the house by the time I'm in my late 40s.

There's never a perfect time to have kids, as long as the parents understand the commitment involved in raising them.

HS
Jumar's picture

As with nearly every generalization, this is wrong. I'm 34 and our 4th child was born when I was 30. We married young, decided to have kids young and don't regret it one bit. Our kids know all of their grandparents and nearly all of their great grandparents. To top it off, we will be empty nesters by 50.

If you continue to think what you always thought, you will continue to get what you always got. #AlumforStaff

If either of these people cared about their children they would stop talking about each other.  They are both using this site and their respective blogs to bash each other and go for a "win".  Zach's podcast can be a success without talking about her at all, he needs to do that.  It is clear that both of these people are posting on this site or having friends post on their behalf.  Just click on the user names, its obvious.  We need to stop supporting this insanity.  Let the courts figure this all out.

Love the Podcast, I really enjoy each episode. You know before the season started i was thinking we may see a side of Zach where he almost wants Ohio State to fail, just do to the fact of how things went down when he was fired. But honestly you can really tell the guy is a buckeye and he gives honest opinions about each group. He has great content, i love the use of PFF because getting grades on players shows you more than a player is playing good or not, it gives great stats and really helps people understand the game. I would recommend it to everyone.

Complete agree. He said on his show this week that he wants OSU to "lift the trophy". Mainly because he knows most of the players and some of the coaches. But yeah, I totally could have seen him want OSU to fail. He's definitely the most objective, informed, guy out there to listen to.

Listened from the beginning for his istories behind stuff that we wanted to know (Torrance Gibson, 2015 Season, Tom Herman, Brian Hartline, Ed Warriner, Urban, Recruiting stories, etc) and it was highly entertaining.

But now it has turned into him breaking down the matchups in college football each week. Which is fine, but you can hear that 100 different places. Not to mention, it's not entertaining to me to listen to him just read scores and rankings from PFF for an entire segment.

HS
ShawneeBuck74's picture

This. I liked when there was Buckeye insider type info... or if he broke down our performance like a coach, or gave us insight into how things work. I don’t mind the inclusion of some other teams  matchups and such. But It’s just too similar to other  Offerings out there. And I don’t care that much about the other teams, TBH.  Just how it relates to the Buckeyes in matchups or potential matchups.

Can't say that I'm totally done with it but you are right. It has just turned into another program talking about the same stuff all the other talk shows cover.

I really liked hearing some of the recruiting stories and behind the scenes stuff. I would love to hear him talk about UF's approach to the 06 game and perhaps breakdown what they saw as OSU weaknesses and a glimpse into their game planning. Also, I would like to hear what changed in 15' for the Mich and ND games, where the team played the team that we thought that we would get all that season. Did we just over match them or did something change from a coaching perspective?

Perhaps he is saving some of the more behind the scenes stuff for after the season when all the other shows are listening to Jimmy from Kansas tell us his thoughts on why we need a 46 team playoff and how it would work

HS

He covered that in one of the first episodes. However, it wasn't scheme so much as "there was no chance OSU tackles could stop UF defensive ends. UF DL was just too fast and that's really all it took."

I'm far from a ZS apologist, but, you do realize, Urban had the power to fire his ass at every one of his MANY screw ups. Zach fucked up, but Urban allowed it.  I don't know how ZS tried to "save his own ass", I assume you mean by fighting his own legal case? Was he supposed to just lie down and accept someone walking all over him?

ZS should've been fired...........While he was still at Florida with Urban. The fact that Urban allowed him to coach at OSU was on Urban and Urban alone.

In terms of "helping him", half the podcasts out there now are from media shills trying to publicize and push agendas for whomever is footing their bills. At least ZS is staying true to his roots, he gets his money for his podcast from a testicle cream company.

Ended up hearing a few hours worth of podcasts on a long drive. I'll admit when we switched drivers & I learned this was what I had to listen to, wasn't going in open minded ... not happy to listen to it.

Wasn't bad and he can be a great presenter when not in a rant mode (that's not very surprising when you understand he was a recruiter).

Not something I'm going to venture to listen to. Not b/c if any ill will towards him personally. He understands his coaching career is done & is attempting to build something to make money. Can't blame anyone for trying to make money.

He's a disgraced ex assistant coach, who never rose to a coordinator level & depending on the opinion you get ... was bad at the job he did have. When there are literally hundreds of sports casts, podcasts, etc ... he has one hell of a hill to climb to be taken seriously in any way. I'm guessing the majority of listeners he does have, only do so for gossip he may have had and/or in Hope's he goes nuts.
