Skull Session: May Jim Harbaugh Stay Forever, Justin Fields Isn't a Top-10 Quarterback, and Ted Ginn's Training Regimen

I like the #11. We'll obviously have see how Day motivates the team but if he follows in Meyer's steps we have always done better as an underdog. We run into trouble when get get complacent.

Negativity is a choice.

At least Justin Fields is ahead of Mason Fine (N Texas) at #12 on his list.

11 is fine when you look at the guys ahead of him. You could also re-write that to say “Fields rated as best QB who hasn’t yet started a game”.

BrutusB - amazing point

HS
CowCat's picture

#11 is probably generous right now. Fields hasn't started a regular season game yet and showed some confusion in the spring game.

What keeps me optimistic is that we have a great coaching staff and a solid infrastructure to support Fields as he settles into the system.

Ginn has really had a quietly incredible career. He's 500 yards away from moving into the top-25 in NFL history in terms of all-purpose yardage. And yet, he's the second-best former Ohio State receiver on his own team.

Forever Teddy Ballgame. Yeah, it pays to be the fastest player on the field.

#walkaway

HS
IGotAWoody's picture

There is fast, and then there is TEDDY fast. He's truly one of the fastest football players I've ever seen.

He's a testament to the value of consistency and staying healthy. Whatever he does, he needs to teach it to others, because he obviously has an elite routine for keeping himself in great shape.

If we are to believe OHSAA track and field, Paris Campbell is faster. In pads, that is different. We will never know.

I'm going by what my eyes tell me when I watch them both, on the field. As you said, in pads, that is different.

For a couple years now I've been torn. I want Harbaugh to stay because he's fun to beat. But I also want to see him get run out of town just so I can witness the apocalyptic meltdown of the fanbase.

Fields hasn't played a snap at Ohio State yet so I understand why he's not ranked very highly there. But I would also agree that I would take him over any of the other guys listed. It's gonna be a fun year.

At this point a lot of the fanbase has turned on Harbaugh and want him gone.. I think every year he remains, they’ll continue to melt down a little more

HS
MichiBuck12's picture

I wouldn't say they've turned on him but the enthusiasm is all the way gone. I heard nothing of spring football this year. I am surrounded by their fanbase on a daily basis and the only reason I knew about the spring game was a single facebook post from a guy that I haven't seen since high school because he took his kid. Having said that, there are no calls for him to be fired or anything either. So they aren't ready to send him packing just yet, but the idea of him being the savior to bring them back to their 1940's glory days has pretty much evaporated into thin air.

HS
ToTheHouse's picture

Know of a Lima, Oh. weasel die-hard, he firmly believes(of course) in his infirmity since their HC is supposedly giving the play calling over to the bama hire savior...all will be well.

To that I say...BAHAHA.

HS
CowCat's picture

Which is kind of funny in another way.  I read an article saying that the Bama coach will be running fewer plays from the spread and fewer shotgun snaps. So they're basically doubling down on what hasn't worked for them against better teams.

Yeah, the salty sufferings of the Mgoblog denizens can be delightful but my opinion is that the powers that be at Michigan are totally satisfied with Harbaugh and what we consider to be mediocre 9-3 and 10-2 records.

Great to see Ginn still striving to be great and on the verge of passing some all time greats in APY. I’ve been a Bucks fan since the mid 80’s and he’s still #1 on my list of electric Buckeyes (sorry Braxton) with the ball in his hands.

Agreed.  Paris is fast.  But thinking back about Ginn in scarlet and gray, Ginn seemed so much faster.

BucksHave7

HS
BuckeyeGoneNuts's picture

That's because Ginn was probably just a hair faster, depending on how you define 'fast' (straight line, quickness, lateral moves, top end speed, speed of the line, ability to separate etc etc), but I really also think the overall level of speed in college football has gone up significantly.  There have always been fast guys, but the overall team speed has increased dramatically over the years... at least that's my layman's observation.  Watching the videos of teams in the 90's and 2000's for example that were supposed to be "really fast" now is weird, many of the players just look slow and plodding compared to today.

To me what separates Ginn and Campbell is Ginn not only had the straight line speed, but he could change direction on a dime and make guys miss. Campbell never really did that. Ginn was basically Campbell and Braxton mixed together.

BucksHave7

HS
BuckeyeGoneNuts's picture

That's a good point, they've lost a lot in players and coaches from last year, but the common thinking is that with Don Brown's system they will still be good.  Then mix in an offense that isn't the equivalent of a patient in a medically induced coma, and voila, there is hope in AA.  Of course that just makes it even more juicy when that hope gets crushed on the field.......

In an era where the NCAA seemingly turns a blind eye to major violations and then stomps on some small program for minor violations, I'm not so sure I want Pitino at ttun.  It wouldn't be hard to imagine him going to his usual bag of sleaze with hookers, cheating, drugs, money etc to get players, but his track record of winning games is undeniable.  Sure, at some point it implodes and he gets run out of town, but I'm afraid you'd see about 5 to 7 years of a lot of success for TTUN before the inevitable scandal and collapse.

The one aspect that would be undeniably good is that the moral high horse the skunk weasels try to pretend to be on would pretty much forever be gone.  Even the thought of saying they did it the "right way" and all that BS would be laughable.

Pitino v. Pitino two times a year is a matchup only ESPN and a divorce attorney could love.

Would the Adobe folks truly sue someone for continuing to use old versions of software? Sounds pretty ridiculous but in this day and age I suppose anything is possible. I miss the days of going to the store to buy a disc and then having the program to use yourself.

Pitino would win in the short term, but it would be like Auburn is currently selling their soul while knowing that it will all be taken away later on after the sanctions hit. I honestly didn't even know that Juwan Howard was in coaching-or maybe I did know and just ignored it because I didn't care?

1. It is asomatous to have a regiment to help you train; it is the regimen that counts.

2. Harbaugh may stay forever, but those around him will stay less and less. He is the opposite of Dabo.

3. I don't understand the breakfast header. Americans eat more variety of foods for breakfast than any other country I've visited. Noticeably absent from the article was the glorious word donut. One visit to Buckeye Donuts for a maple bacon long john would have convinced the author otherwise. If that doesn't do the trick, a trip down the street to Waffle House would be in order for eggs and hash browns covered, smothered, etc. A plethora of breakfast choices.

I'm not personally here to get irrationally upset about an irrelevant preseason list (that's what y'all are for), but 11 feels too low, even if he's never started a game. I get that he's unproven, but I'd have a hard time convincing myself to take any of the quarterbacks higher than No. 5 before riding with Fields.

I've been an unabashed Fields lover since before he even transferred to Ohio State so my biased opinion ain't worth much, but I'd take Fields over Adrian Martinez, Cole McDonald, Shea Patterson and Ian Book at least. Probably Texas J.T. Barrett and Jalen Hurts as well.

please explain the last sentence "probably Texas J.T. Barrett..."--what does he have to do with Fields or any of the other QB's mentioned that are all still playing in college?

HS

I think Kevin is being snarky, suggesting that the run-first Sam Ehlinger is Texas’ version of JT Barrett.

Fields being ranked the #11 QB in the nation is fine with me. Let him feel no pressure, or even a chip on his shoulder, and then step up with his best going forward.

Pitino to TTUN would be wonderful. The betting lines right after his hire should be over/under on NCAA violations crippling the program.

HS

Number 11 is perfectly fine. Zero starts and threw for about 33% in the spring game.
Mass talent and abilities but our QB coaches have to work to get this improved and refined. Early October list of QB's would be a nice follow up.
