Skull Session: Ryan Day's Changes, Three-Point Potentially Line Moving Back, and Jack Sawyer Steps into the Rivalry

What an insanely wild idea!  Adjust the game plan to emphasize player strengths!!  Just might work!!!

Moving the three point line back might open up the court, but maybe not as much for teams that play zone?

Probably should be more proud of Thomas than Sawyer.  But!!

Thomas is another in a long, long line of OSU athletes that make their University look good outside of their sport!!!

Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!

The previous offensive coaching staff also adjusted the game plan to emphasize player strengths. The game plans changed for the last three games in 2014 when Cardale Jones became the starting QB, featuring a more vertical passing game. Dwayne Haskins certainly was not running the same offense that JT Barrett ran the previous year.

I think most of the criticism is directed at the years in between Mensa man and Day... cough 2015 cough

HS

I know I've said this before but I'm really excited to see the changes under Day. Theres just something about the unknown. This is going to be a fun ride.

To be fair, Jack Sawyer has had about as much to do with Buckeye success as that other kid has had to do with michigan failure. Lets not get too far ahead of ourselves. Dominance in the rivalry is very expensive and rent is due every single day.

There are two reasons why I like brashness of ttun commits - Kyle and Kalis.

HS

Throw a third reason in there as well---the "Mirage Man"--Chase Winovich.

I like Sawyer’s “dropping the gauntlet” comment - mainly because it’s a response. Tells me he’s engaged and focused and he’s not even here yet, while ttun kids are grasping at straws.  Joey Velazquez [who’s born/raised in Columbus; not to mention my 3rd cousin] has been vocal too - so maybe I’m too close these types of comments. In the end, you’re right in their regard to success/failure. But Jack’s comment was far from over the top.

Ha. Yeah. To be fair, I don’t even know him but by accounts, he’s a great kid. There’s some “debate” within about how his *ichigan offer came about. Michael Zordich is a cousin from the other side of Joey’s family. I was told Michael had nothing to do w it and I was also told that he put Joey’s tape under Hairball’s nose day after day. Either way the kid, even though committed to tOSU to play baseball, really preferred to play football. While I hope for the best for him personally, the Buckeyes obviously come first.

It wasn't like Meyer was married to the read option. he used Leak to win a NC and he let Haskins set records at tOSU in the passing game that might last for decades. The one thing we lacked with Haskins was a NC worthy D. That said I'm hoping fans see the light now that Day is ready to unleash a dual threat QB. Most likely this year  we'll see the read option used and next year more passing with Fields as the QB  but his legs are a weapon that will still be used...

HS

Apparently Tathan didn't think so.

Tathan knew there was a better QB than he was that he  would have to compete with.

Correct.  Astounding that last years Buckeye D was the WORST in tOSU history at giving up avg of 403/yards per game.   And that team finished the final polls as #3!

I cant wait to watch this new D tear it up, turnovers will double and will give our O better field position entire game.

The art of coaching college football is now, here’s what we have, then you go, OK, this is the strength of the offense. Players, not plays.”

I agree and it is why I am not a huge proponent of zone read, or "Q run". Certain players like Miller are very hard to defend, until they are not.

GOT was disappointing. After spending all that time saying she isn't like the mad King, she does that?

Well, i tried GOT's s1 ep1, then I watched last night's episode. Last night's episode kind of turned it around. That's how you win wars. It all could of been avoided, and the queen stood in defiance instead of surrendering. The brutal violence of GOT's is over the top imo. Here I thought Negan in TWD was bad, this queen is brutal but I its necessary?. I wouldn't have played around after 911. Should have carpet bombed Iraq south to north snd then finished up Iran. So here we are now, 20 years later and the middle east hasn't changed one bit. I guarantee the dragon queen will not have any more problems from that community for a long time. I'll finish out this season probably.
I think Day's mindset is NFL leaning in strategies. NFL coaches don't last long playing favorites. Coaches tend to lose their fire as they get older. Cooper,Earl,Meyer. More noticable with cooper and Meyer. The ZSmith fiasco really took the wind out of Coach Meyer's sails so to speak.I felt the OSU brain trust really made things worse by not making it clear that Coach Meyer was supported 100% by OSU. Then Drake puts the nail in the coffin on Meyer's suspension. Missing all of fall camp and the 1st game isn't enough? I say thats pretty stiff punishment for any HC that kept a troubled assistant on staff to long, and probably should never have hired him. Anyway, its over. Hope Coach Day stays a long time he's going to be a good one imo. But success will also make him the #1 sought after college coach every year. Which I think he ends up breaking the bank for nfl coaches and doubt he lasts 5 years here. Hope I'm wrong.
Hope everyone has a great week, as i am an hour late for work already, alarm malfunction. O H.....

MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS

I'm all for moving the 3pt line back , I do not see how it hurts the game any. Allowing dunking again has not hurt , then again they could have raised the basket to make that harder  but that would discriminate against shorter people.

HS

Allowing dunking again has not hurt

What is this? 1976?

Basketball already discriminates against shorter people. If you want people of the same size competing against each other, that’s why there's wrestling.

Basketball has always and will always discriminate against shorter people. That's why every kid over 6' has heard "Wow you're tall, do you play basketball?" It's why Shaq had a long career in spite of being an abysmal shooter. Tall>talented

Moving the 3-pt line back 1 ft is just fine. The players can certainly hit from 1 foot further away.  Heck, Jimmer hit 1/2 his shots once he crossed the 1/2 court line!  And it was no big deal-- just ho hum.

1. OSU is serendipitous to have a veteran defense and stout running back in the same season as a first-year quarterback.

2. I hope they move the 3-pt. line for both men and women. Otherwise, the lines on the court can get confusing.

Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

It is serendipitous for OSU to have a veteran defense and stout running back in the same season as a first-year quarterback.  I think that would be grammatically correct, not sure if you can use an adjective like you did.  Maybe an English major can let us know ... if anyone really give a ***t LOL.  But excellent point none-the-less!

Any Star Wars fan should check out the link today. What a well done "reimagining" that is. Very cool.

I see no reason to move back the three point line, as the shot seems to have become too easy for a bunch of guys. This would space things out better and make it a little more challenging for some shooters. A Carson Edwards will still shoot from 25 feet, but maybe an oaf like Brazdekis will have to stay a bit closer to the hoop with that extra foot and a half or so.

So the NCAA justifies a change that many viewed as okay or good with terrible reasons. It seems that once again non-basketball people are making basketball decisions, much like non-football people are making huge decisions on rules like targeting. Why not have people involved who understand the given sport.

Yeah, you’re right: leave the decisions about basketball to people who know something about basketball.

Day doesn't really roll like that – hence, a dual threat quarterback taking over for the pocketest of pocket passers. If you're the best, he'll take you.

Let’s not kid ourselves. Is anyone foolish enough to honestly believe that Justin Fields, who has the same private QB coach as Dwayne Haskins, didn’t pick Ohio State and Ryan Day because of what Haskins had accomplished? Who in their right mind would turn down a guy like Justin Fields?

You guys forget what Justin Fields brings to the table.  Lets not view Fields as just another 4 or 5 star kid coming to tOSU.

Got to assume that Chrisman has bottle flipping down to a science: preferred type of bottle, water filled to precisely just-so, where to grip, wrist motion, wrist height, etc. We only see what he’s willing to show us—how many takes did it take to get that right? That’s why his greatest single feat may have been flipping 63 in a minute. Besides consistently pinning MSU deep in its own territory, but that’s a different kind of feet, of course.

Moving the three point gets it closer to NBA, all the other reasons make no sense as NBA is now a 3 point driven league, with little post up except by the guys who can both shoot the three and go inside

happy for Evan, Hope the series goes 7 games!

HS
RunEddieRun1983's picture

It only makes sense that JK Dobbins and the defense carry the team through the field of land mines while (presumably Fields) the starting QB gets himself acclimated. I think that's a pretty intelligent way to anticipate the season starting.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

NEW THREE-POINT LINE? The three-point line could be moving back.

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee is proposing a rule change that would move the three-point line back to the international basketball distance of 22 feet, 1¾ inches, which is a foot and 4¾ inches longer than the current three-point arc.

I'm wondering how this will affect play for those kids in high and middle school. Will the arc remain the same distance at 19' 9"?

One other thing: if the NCAA is going to FIBA dimensions, shouldn't they just go the full monte and make the court conform to those specs?

I am not very smart, but I recognize that I'm not very smart. --- W.W. Hayes

HS
SilverHaven's picture

Right on, GTH, is the int'l court wider to accommodate a wider arc?

HS

Not sure, Silver. I did find out that the high and middle school arcs will stay at 19'9".

HS
Kevin Harrish's picture

No, it's actually slightly narrower.

Kevin Harrish's picture

If their goal is to open up the court, probably not, because the FIBA court is both shorter and narrower.

GrandTheftHarley's picture

Maybe FIBA needs to modify their court to NCAA spec. There's big enough kids outside North America.

Thanks for the fill-in, Kevin.

Well unfortunately by the looks of that pic, Harbaugh is just a weird, fat man now. Too bad we broke him so hard. He's definitely sticking the neck out in the pic with the QB to hide the double chin. As a former fat kid growing up, I appreciate the effort. But jesus, we've wrecked him. Poor guy.
