I always hate salaries in college and pro sports. Honestly, What is the point?
Yes, salaries are REALLY high, but the point is, you pay them or you lose them. These folks are key to our success, so we have to pay to keep them.
You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!
I just dont get the discussion around salary in sports. I love watching my NY Yankees and during telecast when they are talking about the new contract the pitcher just signed. I dont care. Its not my money, the focus should be on onfield performance. Its as if we are suppose to idolize someone by their contract. Its a bad thing in society. Its an irrelevant discussion otherwise.
Do we get together with our family and friends and talk about our W2s from last year?
Oh, I get it. You are right--the market creates it. I think some people are very interested in these huge salaries because of social or other issues. In the end, once again, the market creates it. It is not that interesting to me, but it is the offseason. #firetheoffseason
Its as if we are supposed to idolize someone by their contract [high salary]. Its a bad thing in society.
Sadly, this is exactly what a large portion (probably well over 33%) of Americans do. As we can see these days, this is more prized by many than honesty, morality or character.
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
TV $ changed the whole picture for college coaches. They generally work their asses off and have not much home time. They often exceed a 90 hour work with practice prep and game prep and recruiting. Great life because they love what they are doing but tough on children with Dad not often there for meals, sports, school activities. etc..
In normal every day life a lot of people are overpaid, not just in sports.
You mean like Jared from Subway?
How do you determine someone is overpaid? Having an opinion is one thing, but the reality is the market drives those salaries. The market doesn't have a conscience, but it is self-regulating through competition. People have every right to earn whatever someone is willing to pay for their services. Urban and Tress were worth every penny, just for beating michigan year after year. Of course, that's just my opinion... which is only an opinion. But I had no problem with however much they or their coaches earned. In fact, upon looking at the above salaries, my first thought was they need to give coach Johnson a significant raise.
Don't blame the earners for their high salaries. If anyone is to blame, it's the fans. I haven't been to a game at the Shoe since the 1970's... I can only imagine how expensive it is. But they sell out... which means there is demand for the product. I know there are plenty who are willing to fork out 40 bucks for a regular-season MLB ticket, 9 bucks for a pint of beer, 4 bucks for a 10oz bag of peanuts and 4 bucks for a bottle of water. The fans vote with their wallets. They're the ultimate arbiters of athletic contracts.
"The future is bright at Ohio State." - Urban Meyer 1/1/15
I did not infer that was 7's point. That is the amount is too high, rather, he just does not want to hear or read about it. While he may have some control, i.e. do not click on article, it is hard not to see, read, or hear about. I do agree it is totally unimportant to me. But who among us would not take a salary increase?
Although there were rumors Woody turned down raises!
Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!
I dont pay their salaries. Means nothing to me.
I would much rather see at a datapoint about each, maybe their own records of schools theyve worked at in their prior jobs. Or how did the schools record change since theyve been their.
And a hell of a lot more are under paid.
I also get annoyed when I see how much college coaches are paid. As an adjunct instructor at FIU I teach something like 125 students a semester and get paid what amounts to 60 dollars per student per semester, meanwhile each of those students is paying 6 grand a semester to the school in tuition. And at the same one head football coach Butch Davis is getting paid upwards of a million dollars per year while the FIU athletics department operates at a loss year after year. At least at Ohio State football turns a profit, but I don’t think it’s worth it. Many might disagree with me, but I believe there should be across the board salary caps on coaching salaries, with different and commensurate caps for FCS, G5, and P5 respectively

Need to bump up Coach J's salary.
Ryan Stamper needs a raise, too!
I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.
02, this is what I was scrolling down to find or post. Impossible to understand how he is not the highest paid assistant!!!! BTW, I have no issues with what the others get, just that he should be at the top of the list!!!
Relatively speaking, Hartline seems underpaid too
Sounds like an Italian law firm.
Hindsight is, and in, 2020
Underrated movie imho.
a lot of money to be made.... coaching utes
Life long fan of... The!
I was thinking the Italian mafia support staff.
Is that how we landed the Bosa's??
LJ is underpaid.
In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...
None of them are underpaid.
100% agree. He should be the 2nd or 3rd highest paid coach IMO. And we need to sign him to a contract deal that keeps him here til he retires.
Pay Pantoni more
Agree here too! Recruiting appears to be universally accepted as the lifeblood of success! Seems like the guy overseeing that aspect would deserve more.
Coach Hartline gotta be the best value in all of CFB.
Just posting and hoping my comment isn’t deleted.
The question coming in was... Can he recruit? The emphatic answer has been... YES! Back the Brinks truck up to his garage.
Hartline's salary will continue grow. He will probably be in line for a $100k raise after he puts in a full season.
Pay Mark Pantoni more!
I concur on both fronts... Is anyone worried what Urban's return to college football at USC next season will do to this staff.... For that fact alone I hope he can stay away from a coaching job for a couple more years. Ideally, Ryan Day kills it the next four seasons... Wins a championship or two then gets an NFL job only to have Urban return to throne. Wishfully thinking... Mainly because I think this staff as a whole is as good as it gets. Mick, Pantoni and Stamper are seriously the best in the business at what they do.
I think many people underestimate the willingness of Shelly, Gigi & Nicole to cut Urb's scrotum off if he even sniffs another HC job.
I'm sorry, in what universe is Meyer going to USC next year a sure thing? The world of ESPN? It's not even a sure thing that Clay Helton won't still be coaching the Trojans at this time next year (though his odds aren't good if he has yet another bad season). I think his family might have something to say about that given everyone in his family is settled down in Columbus right now (with his SIL still working for OSU) and will likely have no desire to be uprooted again (to a place where cost of living in terms of simply buying a house is downright offensive no less).
More worried about the length of time listed on LJ's contract than anything.
Damn, I missed that!! Bet that will give Dufo Swiney a warm feeling, he can use it in his normal accursed recruiting repertoire.
I admit the first thing I thought when I saw this list is how outstanding this staff is, the number of coaches who have outstanding resumes is matched by few - exceeded by none. The second thing is WHY DOES COACH JOHNSON not have a lifetime under the column year! If he wants to leave fine, yet he should be welcome to stay regardless of coaches who come and go!
I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
Hartline is getting a good transition from his previous salary!
Have said before that LJ and Hartline are underpaid, but I'm sure they have a similar incentive comp structure as do Marotti, Pantoni, etc. I wonder if LJ is currently in the second year of a two year contract or if he prefers one year deals?
On a $200K base salary, Pantoni stands to get bonused $68,000 if 2019 follows 2018 with a B1G East championship, B1G championship, NY6 appearance, and a non-CFP bowl game and at least 9 wins. If the team gets a CFP berth and plays in the national championship game, that's another $94,000 of bonus money. That's the money that makes the Mrs happy.

I was looking for that nutritionist they hired as well I remember there being an article about how she has changed even pantonis perspective.

I thought Kenton Stufflebeam might sneak into a 6 figure salary.
Kenton no longer works with Ohio State.
Oh. That explains why I couldn’t find him on the search via link. That sucks. Next man up?
Yeah he's over in Los Angeles as the Art Director at Athletes First, the agency that represents Urban Meyer, Dwayne Haskins, and others.
Am I the only one that’s bothered by LJ only being the 5th highest paid assistant coach??? I think he’s worth and deserves more.
The mark of excellence, the test of greatness, is consistency
I am more concerned with LJ's length of 1 year and Mattison's at 2 years. He needs to be second highest on the staff or at least equal to second highest, imo.
God > Family > Buckeyes football
I'm not crazy about the escalating salaries but whatever Marotti and Pantoni get paid isn't enough, IMO.
