I don't understand the point of signing someone only to waive them this quickly? I'm assuming he didn't even have a chance to get on the practice field or have a workout.
I want a fall Saturday in Ohio Stadium..
He was signed after a rookie mini-camp tryout to the 90 man roster. The deal was probably contingent upon him testing clean. My guess is that they drew urine at a physical and the results came back 'unfavorable'.
"Joey, you like movies about gladiators"?
Taking about assumptions and leaping to conclusions. Wow!
Maybe, but it’s one of the only plausible conclusions.
Two things. First, I said, "my guess", which means I was making a guess based on the timing and circumstances. Second, Jalin Marshall is not known for his decision making, both on or off the field. He lost his gig with the Jets for a PED suspension. Don't make me run down the numerous times he fielded punts inside the ten after being warned repeatedly.
If you want to be a homer fan who thinks every single player who comes through Columbus is the epitome of class, character, and intelligence, that fine. However, don't expect everyone else to play along.
I no more assume the above about every player that comes through Columbus, THEN I DO about the nicely compensated and ballyhooed Coaches or us anonymous posters here in this forum. And recent evidence supports this stance!
Oh look... https://thespun.com/big-ten/ohio-state-buckeyes/former-ohio-state-wr-sus...
So what, you were right in your conclusions; you still didn’t know until it was made public; which was my original point.
Hail, look @ Z Smith’s track record, the havoc he wreaked and how it was HANDLED by his IMMEDIATE supervisor, which also wasn’t known until it was made public.
But let me take a giant step back, lest I walk on hallowed grounds that are not player related!
Does Gruden think he can't run Spider 2 Y Banana?
Tom Brady lost to John Cooper. Never forget.
Did something happen off the field that the Raiders just learned about? Seems strange.
What the hell
I know there's a game Saturday, and my ass will be there.
I Believe In Ohio State.
Gruden is a genius!
He's being sarcastic.
That's a Buckeye touchdown!
Man that sucks, I suppose that they signed or have someone they think is better on the way or the squad
That wasn't there two days ago? Have to think something happened between then and now with the most likely candidate being the accompanying physical, including drug test, not going as expected.
Was any of that contract money guaranteed or being waived forfeits any money received?
I’d imagine some of it was in a signing bonus but a contract for a player like Marshall was probably heavily revolving around game checks and roster bonuses
It seems a little cruel. I'm wondering since he was sign, does he get anything?
Maybe they watched the endless film of him fielding punts inside the 10 yard line or with one hand...
Well that de-escalated quickly
Maybe the contract was contingent on him running a 3.9 second 40 at an unannounced 3am workout.

Everybody wants to be heard, and the easiest way to be the loudest is to be the hater
Have to wonder if he popped again for PEDs..? Don't believe he would have been tested in AAF and don't think a team like the Raiders could test him until he signed on the dotted line.
PED's, I thought his problem in the past was not being able to go more than six hours without smoking weed
Well, he was given a four game suspension and released from the Jets for PEDs, so.....
Well Jalin, the XFL is soon coming...
Psssst, Jalin, weed is legal in Canada.
We hardly knew ye.
Hope he gets another shot. Seems like he had a lot of talent.
Success - it's what you do with what you've got. - Woody Hayes
This seems really weird. Why even bother signing him.
Guys with his skill set are a dime a dozen, Buckeye or not.
Right. I think he declared early for the draft. I know these guys want their reward for their hard work. Plus the risk of injury before you are paid, but I didn’t think Marshall was a leave early candidate. For him as a person.
I hope it works out for him and he listened during ‘real life’ Wednesdays.
"we ain't come to play school"
Nah he'll holdout out for the Denver 420s in the XFL.
Should not have left early in the first place IMHO.
OH-IO living BACK IN COLUMBUS after 32 years in the ATL.
Probably not, but he was always going to end up being an UDFA / late round pick with weed problems so I'm not sure much would have been different. His numbers wouldn't have been much bigger in 2016, and he was always going to be a 5-10 slot receiver running a 4.65 40 yard dash coming out of an offense that doesn't exactly have guys running a ton of NFL routes. Those guys don't go high in the draft.
Browns should sign him as a 3rd down receiving back and ship Duke Johnson off for the highest price they can get for him. The lack of utilization of Duke would be comparable to whatever production they could milk from Marshall in a similar role. I think this would fit Marshall's lack of long speed more than anything.
Maybe not, but how'd our passing game do in 2015? And then going to solely Barrett in 2016? I can easily see why he wouldn't want to stay. Fast forward to this past season and having prominent Buckeye receivers stay for their last year because of the prospect of Haskins throwing them the ball.
He and Noah Brown both left early because they didn’t want to catch passes from JT, just like how Hartline left early not wanting to catch passes from Terrelle Pryor.
Hartline has definitely made a difference in the WR room, from technique on display last season by the WRs, as well recruiting.
That said, I will never let it not be said that Haskins as the QB, had as much if not more difference in the opportunity and production for Campbell, Dixon, and McLaurin. The latter two who literally had considerably less (a 3rd of catches) then Campbell, but comparable production.
He got Willie Mays Hayes'd
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
Rumor is that they are clearing a spot for Richie Incognito. Talk about a nut job....
"We talkin' about practice?!" -Allen Iverson 2002
I had to Google this to make sure it was fact. Incognito is old and has been out of football for two years (not to mention he's a certifiable nutjob who actually wanted to cut open his deceased father's corpse in the name of science). There's no question Gruden is the one forcing this move (since he loves his washed up old guys). Mayock isn't stupid enough to make a move like this lol.
It's like the Raiders must have a student intern working in the personnel department, and let that person walkthrough the contacting/signing/waiving of a free agent process.
I love reading the comments about former players, it shows the true nature of fans. Which is to say, they really don't give a shit about these guys. I hope J gets himself on another team, there's plenty of time before the season starts.
I bleed scarlet...literally
What has been said in this thread that's made you think fans "don't give a shit about these guys"? What are we supposed to say? Almost everyone has said something like "welp, that sucks. Also kind of odd" but it's not like the guy hasn't had opportunities. I feel for a guy like Devin Smith with the 2 ACL tears, but Marshall is a guy that could have stuck around in the league for a while as a #3 - #5 WR / KR but just couldn't keep it together off the field it seems. It happens.
To add to that, my life didn't end when my athletic career did (5th grade, but who's counting?), and these guys are likely facing the world with more assets than I had when I was a few years out of school. Don't take this as a 'tough shit' take, just that I don't have any special need to cry over an athletic career that didn't pan out.
You are exactly right. How, as fans, are we supposed to 'give a shit', about these guys, beyond not annoying them in public or spinning off into wild conspiracy theories about their tOSU/NFL careers on the interwebz? Marshall had the sweetest feet I've seen since Savion Glover, but he doesn't have A-good top end speed, and B-the most professional work ethic regarding the realities of his chosen career.
True nature of the players is often on display too, strange how the expectations seem to be one sided. They go get theirs and it's terrific and if fans don't worship at their feet for life then the fans are the bad guys.
This is just strange, IMO. Why did the Raiders go through the process of signing Marshall just to dump him two days later? One would think that the Raiders would have looked into Marshall's qualifications beforehand.
Everything is just speculation at this point. I wish Jalin well.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
It's the NFL-they bring in practice fodder by the boatload, kick the tires, see what has the potential to stick, release, rinse, repeat, no harm, no foul. It's the way the business works. I'm sure Oakland isn't the last practice squad try-out Marshall will have.
I agree with you that it's just a business, but I still find it odd that Jalin was released after only 2 days. That's not enough time to learn any system.
Maybe he just wasnt as good as they thought. Hes small..maybe poor routes..hands..doesn't have to be anything sensational
Duron Carter and and Devier Posey are two of the top WRs in the CFL. Dontre Wilson and Torrence Gibson are up there trying to make a go of it as well. Sure beats the hell outta the AFL or the XFL.
Not sure I would call either of those guys top WR's in the CFL. Carter has been bounced around the CFL. Not sure either of them had 30 receptions last year. Posey had a great Grey Cup in 2017 though...
The joke about the NFL is that it means "Not For Long", but this takes the cake. Why didn't the Raiders bother to do their research and tests before signing Marshall? Weird.
