Football is a great sport to watch. The problem with it is, there is infinitely more time spent talking about it and speculating on it than time spent watching it. Mock drafts the week before the draft have a low hit rate, yet they still get done. And we immediately turn the page to next year’s draft, even though there are so many variables, you may as well be forecasting the weather for the same day as the draft. This isn’t a knock on 11W. It’s a knock on football writers everywhere. Create content where none is needed.
The most prominent draft guesser Mr Kiper had seven correct in the 1st round. I dont see it as a problem though. Talking about football is what makes it great! I unfortunately live in Pittsburgh and entire Mondays are lost with my coworkers blah blah blahing about the Steelers. That doesn't happen for the Penguins or Pirates. It's the breaks between games and the offseason that gets people interested and talking.
Negativity is a choice.
Talking about football is actually what makes football such a great spectator sport. Each play is about 8 seconds long. There's about 40 seconds between snaps and plenty of other breaks for subs, etc. The reason we all love spectating is the action but it's all the downtime in the middle of plays to talk, react and forecast. It's part of how spectator sports have become popular in the states. Baseball commentary used to be the biggest thing and likely the reason it was so popular initially on the radio. Football is more visual and took off with television and the analysts. Soccer and hockey don't have the same breaks and struggles in this regard. Basketball is kind of in the middle, i guess.
We love talking football. Heck, I read the comments on 11W and sometimes even comment on them. Then I'll go to someone's office down the hall and talk some more about it. I've never put on pads or played more than backyard football but I love talking and listening about.
Larry Johnson just keeps Proving his worth by pumping out defensive linemen like it's nobody's buisness! Should speak volumes to recruits considering their NFL future!
If we have 5 first rounders on our roster next year, then we best win the National Championship. Also, has 5 first rounders for a team ever happened in one year?
In Urban We Trust
I think one of the early 2000's Miami teams had 47 first rounders one year or at least it felt that way.
Fun fact, the 2002 National Title Game had 43 starters (Gamble played both ways). 37 of them were drafted, 18 in the first round. 58 players that played in that game went on to play in the NFL. Possibly the greatest collection of talent on one football field in NCAA history.
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
Yes The U had 6
“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”
Wow! Makes me that much happier to have seen the Buckeyes beat them in the natty.
Um osu had five in 2016
What am I missing? A historically bad defense in all of college football had 4 eventual first round draft picks on it? Obviously a mock draft a year in advance has as much credibility as Lance Armstrong, but even this seems extremely homerish.
There is a big chance that only 1 or 2 out of the 4 mentioned here will go in first round.
Not sure how national writers can be homerish.
Probably the same way a defense that finished ranked in the 70’s in a single season is somehow one of the worst defenses in the history of college football.
Yeah, just the worst defense in OSU history. That is a pretty big difference though.
They would be well served to focus on next season and ignore the outside noise.
Mark May is a mental midget
Chase Young is definitely top 5 worthy if Gary is a 9. Cant wait to see ZHarrison get some PT early in the light OOC schedule this year.Malik Harrison is a guy on the ascending list as well. I may get criticized but I think Pete Werner rSoph takes a big step this year. 6'3" 235#' players with sub 4.5 speed arent exactly falling out of tree's. It was pretty much a consensus here @ 11w that Schiano's complicated reactive defensive scheme was the big problem and also not coaching to turn and defend passes. So one would think all of our young guys will show improvement over last season.
Although I'm sure the "Fighting Fickle's" will pull out a few 1-handed, sideline bullets, shoestring and over the shoulder catches the first half to keep us on the edge of our seats, never easy is it. Make no mistake about it, Coach Fickle and staff are game planning, practicing, running, hydrating, eating and sleeping their 2019 mantra, "Shock The World". Like Indiana hitting 19/20 of their scripted plays in the 2017 season opener expect similiar with UC.
MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS
Young and Okaduh are the first round locks..
Dobbins is going to have to have a SPECIAL season imo to get into the first round. It's a pass happy league and just about every NFL team knows you can get a solid running back after the first round. There's been 1 RB taken in the top 20 in the past two drafts combined... Saquan. Seems like we are going to run from the QB more this season which should limit RB touches and add that to the fact that it leaked out that Dobbins wasn't "all in" this past season and first round seems like a reach... rooting for him though..
Harrison still looks like a project to me. Maybe that changes this season but the knock has been Schiano's NFL defense was too complicated at the college level. You don't have that luxury in the NFL. For most teams, it's even more complicated then what Schiano was running and Harrison looked flat out lost at times.. Still seems like a kid you take mid rounds and give him more time to let that athleticism catch up to a relatively new position for him ( Linebacker)... again rooting for him..
I agree that Okudah "blew up" as the season went on. Young will look better with experienced players with him on the line.
surprised that damon arnette didn't get a mention.
Wow! I thought the league would really hate on J.K. because of his height! So much that he'd be a four-year starter! Good for him that they're not though! Everyone in the Midwest knows what a beast he is!
"The only good thing about it is winning the d*** thing" - Urban Meyer on The Game The War
Your really think JK is a beast? Like how?
He can't run between the tackles.
He isn't fast enough to break away from defenders chasing him.
He doesn't have enough power to get that 3rd and 1 when the offense needs it the most. (Which is why they had to use Haskins late last year, to do the run options)
He tried bulking up for the rigors of the B1G schedule last year and completely regressed so much that he didn't look anything like his freshman year.
I'm sure he would be a great starter for Kent State, Duke, Wake Forest, etc...
Look guys it's Marcus Crowley time!!! This is a grown man that's about to punish opposing defenses. Not to mention Master Teague is better than JK!!! We have two RB's sitting behind JK who are much bigger, stronger, and faster.
Top of the food chain
Yeah cause JK didnt torch a top ten wisconsin defense his freshman year or anything. Your opinion lost all credibility thinking he could only could start at the likes of kent state.
I could say so much more about your awful takes but I realize you're just here for attention so I wont bother.
Shaun Wade kept getting better last year. I wouldn’t be surprised if he declares after next season. I want guys to stick around, but play well enough to be first rounders. Is that too much to ask?
I hate assuming that everyone of our great juniors to be are going to leave early for the NFL.
Bucks fans in Mass
Wonder how many 1st rounders expected out of USC. It would be nice to pass the surf nazis for all time #1 picks.
This is an impressive list and if the defense turns around the way we all hope then a great deal of attention will be paid to those coaches who were just hired and Day will see his reputation soar as well!
I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
JK Dobbins as a first rounder....you have got to be joking right !!!
Mike Weber was way better than JK and barely got himself drafted. Unless your Dave Gettleman there is no way he deserves to even get drafted. Maybe a undrafted free agent.
The J.K. Dobbins hate in this thread is unreal! C'mon people!
