Why is 21 not allowed by the NFL?

They have a numbering system for specific position groups:

quarterbacks, punters, and placekickers: 1–19;
running backs and defensive backs: 20–49;
centers: 50–79;
offensive guards and tackles: 60–79;
wide receivers: 10–19 and 80–89;
tight ends and H-backs: 40–49 and 80–89;
defensive linemen: 50–79 and 90–99;
linebackers: 40–59 and 90–99.

One of the very few rules I wish CFB would borrow from the NFL instead of vice versa.

Completely opposite for me.  I love seeing single digit DEs and LBs.

I second this.  Let them wear what they want, except for those that have to be kept track of, like ineligible receivers and such.

May I ask why a player wearing a certain number grinds your gears? We all can agree that no one wants to see an offensive tackle wear number 8 but why can’t Parris wear 21?

It's all a matter of practicalitry. On an NFL roster, you need jersey numbers for 63 players maximum. So this system works.

That's true, but the CFB solution is to allow duplicate numbers, as long as they play on different sides of the ball. Given that there are more than 100 players and only 99 numbers that's going to happen, especially when you subtract the retired numbers.

What?   Kickers can’t wear 95 or 97?

too accurate.

Having to ask for a number is stupid and kinda douchey. If it isn't retired, then he shouldn't have to ask for it.  Either retire it or put it in circulation.

I agree, but it sounds like Haskins approached him first.  So maybe he just wanted to avoid the mini controversy (unless the team told him to ask, which would be dumb).

Yeah, Haskins was actually asked about it in an interview with NFL Total Access on the night of the draft, and he responded without hesitation that he would have to ask Theismann first. So I think that's just him showing that he understands and respects the history of the organization. Theismann doesn't actually have the power to prevent him from wearing No. 7, and ultimately, the Redskins could still choose to assign him a different number if they want even with Theismann's blessing. But since the number has been quasi-retired by the team for 30-plus years, it makes sense for Joe to have a say in it.

As both a Buckeyes fan and Redskins fan, that's how I read it as well. Haskins was just being classy. He's been wearing #7 since he was a kid, but didn't want to be disrespectful of the Redskins' history.

Good thing he wasn't drafted by the Broncos. There is no way in hell Elway will ever let 7 go. Theisman is much cooler.

I've always had a hateful place in my heart for the Redskins, because Walter Payton's last game came in a playoff loss to them. He knew he was retiring and sat on the the bench for an hour weeping after the loss.

Well, ... the Bears are one of only 5 NFL teams without a Buckeye. So what now?

Perhaps, if the Saints are able to trade for Dwayne in a year or two to replace Brees then I may just move to New Orleans, and suffer through the humidity.

Theisman cool?  He is a self-centered bum.

Friend of mine said Theisman was pronounced Theesman ....until his Heisman Trophy campaign at ND asked him to change the pronunciation

any truth to this rumor?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR BLESSINGS, JOSEPH ROBERT THEISMANN.

I rag on Joe, but c'mon...is he really going to deny the mojo that the new #7 could bring to D.C.?

Good call.

I had to run away high, so I wouldn't come home low...

It’s laughable that Theismann “gave permission” to Haskins to wear #7! I will say Joe was (and obviously still is) All-Pro in self-promotion. But, as was seen in his “announcing days,” soon Joe’s mouth overloads his performance. Their are several major Redskin fans in my family; none of them admire Joe.
