Super Bowl LIV: Patriots vs Buckeyes

Great article Dan.  It's really good reading.  What a loaded team that would be.

For a chance at Super Bowl ring and for the glory of immortalizing Ohio State forever, I think those high paid skill position players would all take a one year pay cut, especially if they all got to play together once more, with Meyer, Tressel, Vrabel, Coombs, etc.

but you left out one complete aspect; who would be all the coaching positions?

Furthermore, can you guys write up another one like this, but make it include ALL Buckeyes in history (just so we can have Ryan Shazier and Woody Hayes on the same roster)

Who gets Ebner and Simon??  Haha this would be awesome to watch.

soldierdad's picture

We always hear Ohio State against the world...and I’m liking our chances.

The soldier is my son.  The school I gone to didn’t teach much grammar.

Rarely watch any NFL, but I'd watch that team.  Bet they'd do really well too!

Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!

Monclovabuckeye's picture

How about a Columbus NFL franchise for them to play?

I don't give a damn for the whole state of Xichigan.

CowCat's picture

IMO that will never, ever happen.

Look at the current environment. Ohio has 2 NFL teams, 2 MLB teams, an NBA team, an NHL team and an MLS team. But what is the biggest fan draw in the state? Ohio State Football.

Living in Seattle, I try to explain it to people here. Most states are divided, e.g. UM vs. MSU, UW vs. WSU, etc. Not in Ohio. The only comparable state to me is Nebraska.

The whole subject here is a fantasy!

I don't give a damn for the whole state of Xichigan.

CowCat's picture

But why would you even fantasize about an NFL team in Columbus?

The CowCat, my favorite real-life animal.

I don't give a damn for the whole state of Xichigan.

RunEddieRun1983's picture

How about Kurt Coleman at safety? Is he still around, or did he retire?

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

RodVedder4's picture

Thought he was still playing - Philly Brown too.

Excellence and greatness will be remembered...there is no room for average. None. - Urban Meyer

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ - Joey Bosa

Dan Hope's picture

Neither of them are on NFL rosters as of now. There's still time that they could be picked up (though Brown hasn't played in a regular-season game since 2016, so I would guess his chances of playing another NFL game are fairly slim at this point), but I opted to stick with players who are currently signed with teams since there are already enough, except for kicker, to field a full roster at every position.

Urbane Meijer's picture

I wonder how this team would do under the salary cap.

southalabamabuckeye's picture

That is a lot of talent that has come through The Ohio State University. Wow! My lacking NFL interest would be instantly revived.

GlenBuck's picture

Who are the coaches? Vrabel, Coombs, ...?

Dan Hope's picture

I'd nominate Vrabel for head coach and Coombs for secondary coach, but I honestly haven't given the rest any thought.

BucksLover0214's picture

Head Coach - Vrabel

I’d cheat and make previous NFL coaches my coordinators.  Have some player coaches too.

OC - Ryan Day

DC - Hafley

Secondary - Coombs

Linebackers - Shazier

OL - Orlando Pace or Bentley

DL - John Simon

ST - Nugent/Ebner

They hate us cuz they aint us!! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

BestDamnTeamInTheLand's picture

I'd definitely have Ol' Billy Boy on the payroll... with his only job duty being to stay at least 1,000 yards from our linebackers at all times.

Hovenaut's picture

"...with his only job duty being to stay at least 1,000 yards from our linebackers at all times."

Based on the way we saw Buckeye linebackers play the past couple seasons, I'm sure Coach D could oblige.

(Sorry, all...that was too easy)

Aaaand now I have to go get the new Madden....

pduncan710's picture

A friend of mine is a Michigan fan. We were talking last week about doing this exact thing with Buckeye and Wolverine alum. Are there enough Michigan alum in the league to fill a roster?

BuckeyeRy4's picture

Probably not, don't care. ;)

DaytonBuck1980's picture

Really great write up.

Still not giving a damn for the whole state of Michigan.

And their coach?

If/when Pryor signs, you have to figure he would be on the field opposite Thomas with Ginn or Samuel in the slot - lets be realistic, none of these other WR's have done all that much outside of slot, but in the slot they are monsters.  Coverage would be rolled to Thomas, Safety's couldnt cheat beyond that due to Zeke, so that leaves a lot of single coverage on Pryor and the slot receivers.  Parris and Terry would make the squad as much for special teams as WR's, and the rest of that crew (Dixon, Brown, Miller, DSmith, Marhsall) would have to really work to earn it.

56....How does this compare to any other college team? How many of the 56 are considered all pro?

Dan Hope's picture

Our Matt Gutridge did the math on Alabama, and found that there are currently 61 Alabama players on NFL rosters. My guess would be that Ohio State's 56 rank second, but I haven't checked any other schools. I do know that Ohio State has had the second-most draft picks in the past four years behind only Alabama and by a significant margin over any other school, so I'd be surprised if any other school had more players currently in the NFL.

navybucknut's picture

I would upvote if I could. I love the work you guys put in!!

JimmyVanP's picture

At start of last season, it was

1 Bama 44

2 LSU 40

3 Florida 38

4 OSU/Miami 36

But a lot has changed since the start of last season obviously, and this didn't include practice squad guys.

BrutusB's picture

ESPN has us at 39, and has 50 for Bama. (It doesn't mean a whole lot on 5/1 anyway, given that those numbers include guys that won't be on actual rosters for Week 1).

Max's picture

Might be an interesting pro bowl format...

ShawneeBuck74's picture

Would be a good team. Stronger when DH is in the league for 2-3 years.

Defense is stout. Weakness (a little) would be the middle D-line and LBs. Not terrible but not all-pro level like the DEs and DBs.

You win with people.

And so forth...

9 Units Strong!

navybucknut's picture

I think the front line with back end could cover for the weakness in the LB unit. However, in excited to see this next year and see if we improve on that front!

hnyg8modonwelfare's picture

That team would beat the Patriots.

Thank you Urban Meyer and Gene Smith

On injured reserve for the rest of the 2019 season. He's lucky to be walking (and then some), but it's questionable if he ever plays again.

Nice write up, but all you did was basically list the 2015 2 deep lineup that didn't make the playoffs with a few older players sprinkled in. (And the older players are unnecessary when looking at the 2015 2 deep).

2015 2 deep

LT. Taylor Decker
LG Billy Price
C. Pat elflien
RT. Isaaha Prince
Te. Vannett and Baugh
RB Zeke Elliott
Hb/slot. Curtis Samuel
Wr. Mike thomas, Braxton Miller, Paris Campbell and Terry Maclaurin
QB. Cardale Jones (who has spent 2 years on active NFL rosters and 1 year on Practice squad) and Barrett

De Joey boss
DT Adolphus Washington (omitted from your list)
DT tyquan lewis
De Sam Hubbard and Jaylon Holmes

SLB. Darron Lee and Worley
MLB Raekwon McMillan
SLB Dante Booker
CB Marshon Lattimore
CB Gareon Conley
Slot Corner. Eli Apple
Safety Malik Hooker
Safety Vonn Bell

Punter Cam Johnston
Kicker Nuremberg
Punt and KO returner Curtis Samuel

It is criminal that the 2015 squad did not defend it's title with arguably the best collection of college talent on one roster at the same time in the modern era of D1 football.

I will argue to the end that if Meyer eats his pride and let's the staff build the offense around Cardale's strengths, then the 2015 team breezes to its 2nd consecutive title. Instead Meyer's ego made him want to prove he was right in selecting JT at the start of 2014 and he was going to prove JT could win it in 2015. We know how that played out in both 15 and 16. JT's limitations as a passer were never going to beat the Alabama's and Clemson's of the world- but Cardale had already proven he could. As Tom Herman loves to quote "having done something is testimony. There's no hope the plan works. It's time tested and it's very proven"

Cardale was the Testimony.
JT was the Hope the plan works.

If you like podcasts, then listen to the Beanie and Boom podcast with Cardale for a behind the scenes glimpse of what was going on in 2015. Very illuminating.

Why wouldn't J.T. Barrett be the starter at QB?

--Urban Meyer, probably.

Most of those position groups are really good (OL and secondary especially) but the LBs look like the weak link.  While this past year was especially bad, it's kind of a reminder that we haven't really been churning out too many stars there the past few years.

For years I have created this team with madden. It's amazing how well they fill out a full roster that competes.

Is Weber officially on the team?

OH MY GOODNESS!!! Look at that fricking squad... show this article to recruits: so you want to play in the NFL huh...?

What would an all-TTUN team look like?

QB:  Brady

RB:  Peppers

WR:  Peppers

OL:  Peppers

A thing repeated will happen a third time.

ravidesai1984's picture

I wonder if Shazier was healthy who would get bumped off the list at linebacker.

BradHall114's picture

Defensive line, defensive backs and WRs looking fine as hell!  Also the Cowboys now have like 60% of OSU running backs since 2015, not a bad strategy lmao.

The band is the best part.

mockjocks's picture

I thought Rod Smith signed a deal somewhere? Should be room for him on this list.

CanadianBuckeyeEh's picture

That's a helluva list.  We have been so Blessed with talent and coaching staff.  Unreal.
