Definitely needed the depth.
Definitely needed the depth.
You can say that again. This doesn’t fix our depth issue, but it makes it much less critical than it was.
We have 4 QB's now... I think the depth issue has been resolved along with Miller coming in next year. They can for sure target 2 QB's in the class after that.
Its 2019. With the portal, the depth issue is as resolved as its going to be.
Sure it does, short term at least.
Considering we just added Hoak and Andrade to the QB room this greatly improved our depth. Those guys may not be on the level of Baldwin or Martell but they will be assets to our QB room.
He looked better than a three star to me.
That rating was three years ago, I believe.
Announcers working KY's spring game in the posted clip above said he was a 4 star.
I'd rather be a minute early than an hour early, 'cause I like to procrastinate.
This will be a very nice addition to the QB room - Fields plus 3 guys that will want to be there until their eligibility runs out.
a very nice addition to the QB room
Agreed. Fascinating that he's related to Fred Pagac, a Buckeye coach that was part of great OSU defenses and then LB coach for the Denver Broncos.
What is Fred Pagac doing these days? Has he retired from football?
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
Woah, great couple of pick ups for us! Welcome to the Brotherhood, Gunnar!
Great news and a much needed addition. Baldwin leaving created a sizeable hole but it has been filled nicely. Good work by Coach Day and company.
Great pick up!
Does this put us over the 85 limit again?
That won’t be an issue even if it is above 85
The article says we are now at 86.
Boom! Much needed addition to the QB room, at the very least for depth. But our QB room is getting stronger now. Hopefully no more out-transfers.
That's a Buckeye touchdown!
One man exits, two men enter!
Feeling much better about the QB room situation now, welcome home Gunnar!
Technically, two men exited but definitely agree, the situation is much better now.
So now the question becomes who is second string. My money's on Chugunov just because he already has a year in the system but Hoak could very well push him.

Fields of Dreams
A huge sigh of relief from Buckeye Nation!
Head north till you smell it, west until you step in it
It did also I thought he would look around a bit and still wasn't 100% he would come here . It gives us another body but we are in trouble if Fields goes down.
Most teams in the country’s in trouble if their starter goes down.
Blockage of the M he gets it
Back up QB depth fixed ....
From feeling good, to panic mode, to feeling better than I did before...all within two weeks?
This Ryan Day fellow, he's got my attention haha
If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special.
Fields will still need to be healthy if the Buckeyes want to compete for championships, but I feel a lot better about the depth if he ever has to miss a game or two. A big concern has all of a sudden turned into a decent amount of depth.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
Fields needs to master the playbook and get in sync with his receivers first. He played decently in the spring game, but he's still a work in progress. We all hope that he will be 100% prepared by September.
I really like this graduate transfer. The guy is from the Columbus area, loves the Buckeyes and has multiple years of starting at a power 5 program. BOOM.

Bingo! It's the learning of the playbook that, at this stage, is vital. When you have second year guys completing it's not a issue. But were halfway through the spring with a backup who has never seen the playbook, and a starter with 2 months.
May sound nitpicky, but Hoak has exactly zero starts at any college program. He played in a total of four games (CMU, Murray St, Missouri & Tennessee) in mop up duty last year and zero games in 2017.

I guess it will come down to his skill set and command of the offense, e.g. can he be the next Kenny Guiton?
The Baldwin decision was a surprise, but boy did they respond quickly.
Ryan Day is not fucking around.
If you had to write a one sentence summary of Day's effort so far, that would be it.
I survived Cooper, and I hate Tai Streets.
QB room suddenly feeling stocked.
All I think about is Haskins to McLaurin
I don’t see it.
I really wasnt expecting him to come but I'm thankful that he is.
Get dumped then
With a QB named Gunnar, we need a wideout named Targit
"The future is bright at Ohio State." - Urban Meyer 1/1/15
Gunnar, not Gunner. ;)
a team source told Eleven Warriors that Hoak will have an opportunity to compete for the starting job this summer.
Fields isn’t the starter yet...
Do you believe that… really?
Do I think Fields will end up starting? Yes, I do. But this just goes to show that Fields hasn’t been handed the job.
There was more than one person at Kentucky that believed Hoak should’ve started for Kentucky last year. He’s a capable experienced player. And at least to me, I’ve seen Fields in an OSU jersey twice: Student Appreciation Day and the Spring Game. Both times I came away very unimpressed with his throwing ability.
I think Fields will be the starter this coming August. But most people have already ordained him the starter, and that quote just goes to show that he hasn’t been yet.
Best case scenario is we don’t need him this year... he sits out/redshirts and then has a chance to start for a year after Fields is gone. Kinda like Malcolm Pridgeon.
You win with people.
And so forth...
9 Units Strong!
He has already redshirted
Ahhh. I see
but he has TWO years of eligibility remaining, not just one.
I liked his spring game tape. And I like his Buckeye heritage. Nothing against Fields, but he's more of a Buckeye than Fields.
I mean, it's not like JT Barrett grew up watching Buckeye football, I realize that. But maybe his Buckeye bloodlines mean that we don't have to worry about Hoak transferring out?!
Still going to be tough for Ryan Day to come close to UFM's record, but he is so far managing the program very well.
Welcome home. BOOM
OSU didn't execute and lost to horrible officiating. BOTH things can be true
Defcon threat level now down to 6 from 9. Great opportunity for him to add to the family legacy...Kenny G V.2 ??
Justice delayed is justice denied....#FTP
DEFCON levels go up to 5 and lower numbers are more severe...
Forget it. He’s rolling

Awesome. He will get to throw TDs to CJ Saunders again, during garbage time of blowout wins.
Maybe you missed it but CJ got to run with 1's at times last season during "meaningful" moments.
Man….. this football team.-Jeff Okudah
In Antoine Winfield I trust
Good add, fits the current scenario perfectly. I like it.
In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...
We are going to need an 11W writer specifically devoted to keeping track of QB personnel.
Priority #1: Beat Michigan
Two years also is time to get grad degree.
Yeah. I noticed that CFB Stats has him listed as a Soph last season. So he apparently redshirted and graduated a year early. Good for him.

My thoughts, too. Welcome home, Gunnar.
Wow, talk about a Buckeye blue blood scarlet blood. His uncle played and coached for OSU, and his father and cousin played for OSU, and now him.

I believe the point was to adequately capture the flow protruding from his helmet.
Thrilling week for Gunnar. Congrats and glad you are home.
Somber and dignified BOOM.
Welcome home Gunnar (which also happens to be my son's name).
Good for you Mr Hoak! Now you will have a little easier drive to Gunnar's games?
Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!
It's scary to think that I actually am old enough to have a son that age, but my Gunnar is 13...and plays hockey.
I watched his tape (pretty good, similar to Matt Baldwin's) and I wondered why we didn't really recruit him hard. I couldn't for the life of me remember who our 2016 QB recruit was...
Now I know why we didn't recruit Gunnar the first time around.
That should ease everyone's mind. I don't know if he's better than Baldwin or not, but there certainly isn't any proof that he isn't.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
Welcome (back) to Buckeye Nation! Great for us and, I think, great for you too!
Welcome aboard, Gunnar. And unless I'm mistaken, 12 is available on offense.

BOOM! Welcome home Gunnar Hoak! Go Bucks!
Great "insurance policy"--much needed--that Day guy knows what he is doing.
OK all you "the sky is falling" fans can come out from your basements or from under your beds now ....
OK, but I'm keeping my tinfoil hat on ...

Excellent news - welcome aboard, Gunnar Hoak.
Hindsight is, and in, 2020
Crazy transfers created this mess. It needed to be addressed and dealt with. Our 2 addictions have started as a step towards being a solution. Good work to our coaches for making the needed moves.
Now 600 hours of passing and other drills to make each as good as they can and will be.
Additions. Oops. Sorry.
Does anyone know where Baldwin is headed? Not sure I totally believe the homesick thing, so just curious where he ends up.
This is a huge deal. Now, if Fields goes down for a couple weeks, we have a competent backup (whose film looks A LOT like Baldwin) to at least effectively manage the gameplan and offense and keep the defense honest and out of an 8 man box. Interestingly enough, the Buckeye scholarship QB depth chart now has 2 SEC transfers and 1 Big XII transfer. The new transfer rules + Dwayne leaving early = chaos. I'm betting Day attempts to avoid QB depth chart holes in the future, this could have gone very badly if we went into the season with just Fields and Chug on scholarship.
I think we'll see more turmoil across programs if the NCAA keeps letting kids get immediate eligibility; and not just in transfers.
It could impact recruiting as well. A top recruit could sign with a school that also has anoter top recruit (such as UGA did) to see if he gets the starting slot knowing if he dosesn't he can always transfer to anothere program and potentially have multiple years of eligiblity if he redshirted his freshman year.
This is more of a hallelujah than a boom. But it's very welcome news.
The Hoak is no joak.
Very good addition, and really looks like an upgrade over Baldwin in the event Fields would go down.
This is a great pickup for the Buckeyes. Much needed. Local kid with potential. There's a lot to like about Gunnar.
I watched the clip above. Just my analysis for what it's worth. His delivery, looks like he's throwing a fade on every pass from the pocket. A lot of mostly arm throws. I'd like to see him get his front shoulder forward and down and drive the ball off his front foot, more baseball style.
If he improves a bit who knows what he might be able to accomplish. Good luck and welcome back!
Given the quality of qb coaches at tOSU, there should be a real chance of improvement!
Welcome aboard Gunnar!
15-1 is SWEET!
