Skull Session: Giants Pass on Dwayne Haskins, Urban Meyer Remembers 2014, and Tyreke Smith Calls His Shot

So let me get this straight..."my" Bengals had a chance to draft Haskins (who I believe will be a franchise QB) and instead took an OL who can "play anywhere along the offensive line" (code for: doesn't really have a standout position). This after recently overdrafting two shitty OL and firing their long-time great Offensive Line coach as a scapegoat. You know, for the last 5 years or so my interest in the NFL has waned a bit, and I thought it was because of some of the noise surrounding the League, or the fact that I thought it has become a glorified 7 on 7 tournament (which honestly, it has). But last night's buffoonery has made me realize that it's because the team I've supported my entire life hasn't really been any good since 1988, and they either don't care to do better, or they have no fucking idea how to get it done. I said it before after the '07 season, but "so long Bengals". I just can't do it anymore.

I'm with ya. I've been a loyal Bengals fan my entire life. last night I finally realized that, for whatever reasons, the Bengals organization has been intentionally shooting for mediocrity... Win just enough to keep the core fans around while still ensuring that they win nothing of consequence. They love Dalton because he guarantees them true mediocrity. Haskins would have upset their ambitions for perpetual 7-9 seasons and they couldn't have that. I'm changing my user name to SkinSweat now.

"...they either don't care to do better, or they have no fucking idea how to get it done."

Well written Brutus0717. I've pondered the same question regarding Bengals' "management" for many, many years. Do they not give a damn, or are they just incompetent? or perhaps both?

After not drafting Haskins, or not trading down with the Redskins, they follow that stupidity by taking a blocking TE in the 2nd - a massive overreach - and then take a weak QB in the 4th, whom they gave up 2 picks to trade up to get.

Just ridiculous. Do they somehow believe, in their own minds, that they have pulled off some miraculous heist, delighted by their own imagined "foresight," or are they just flat-out stupid? We may never know.

(I don't expect anyone to ever read this, but I had to vent my frustration).

I'd rather be a minute early than an hour early, 'cause I like to procrastinate.

HS
brutus0717's picture

I read it, my man, and I'm with you. I'm done trying to figure out the idiocy that is the management of the Bengals. I'm moving on. I commend Browns fans for staying true for 20+ years of ineptitude, but I guess where pro sports are concerned, I don't have that level of resolve.

They didn’t trade ODB.

The couldn't trade him, they never even drafted him.

Add to it that the New York Football Giants also added Jabrill Peppers in that trade and it's like doubling down on stupid, right?!?

Just sayin...

If it's a question of which team is in worse shape today, they both currently suck but IMHO it'd be the Skins who are just a tad bit worse.

At least the Giants have a very solid RB and some offensive weapons to work with.

The Redskins lost their starting QB to a career ending injury after paying a pretty steep price for him from KC and have Adrian Peterson.

In either case, I thoroughly enjoy the fact that Dwayne gets a chance to play the Giants twice a year.

I'd also add that it wouldn't be the worst idea to let Dwayne hold a clipboard for a year or two, at least until Washington loses enough games to draft some OL to protect his ass!

The Giants took a QB that is mediocre and will be out of football in a few years. The Skins took the best NFL ready the Buckeyes have fielded in my short 4 years here. Tell me who is worse.

#walkaway

HS
Defiance's picture

Dillon, it depends on the perspective.

The Giants are a better offensive team at this point, even without OBJ. Saquon Barkley, Golden Tate and Sterling Shepard are at least a good core and the OL is in decent shape. Add in the fact that Eli will be there to foster the new QB's transition and I'd call it a good landing spot. Not to be confused though, they blew the pick on the QB from Duke. Duke, really?!?

The Redskins are just not at the same level. Adrian Peterson, Josh Doctson and Paul Richardson don't give me much faith in their offense for next year, regardless of who's under center. Their OL might be adequate to keep the QB out of the turf but there just aren't any true weapons to speak of in DC. They do have Alex Smith (who sounds like he may be done for good after his latest injury) and Case Keenum to help bring Haskins along but I just fear that he'll get thrown in too soon and his long term development may suffer because of that.

Tell me who is worse.

So it depends on what you mean when you say "Tell me who is worse."

The QB the Giants took was a STRETCH at #6, no matter what year we are talking but they have a better supporting cast and will foster better development for a young QB, IMHO.

The QB the Skins took was a much better pick but the supporting weapons just aren't there and it could turn ugly in DC in a hurry for any young QB.

Dave Gettleman has had a really bad offseason. I think the only way he could screw this up more right now is if he trade Barkley away for a bag of peanuts. Daniel Jones at 6? LOL have fun with that.

Good for Haskins though for dodging that bullet. His initial contract might not be as big but he will have a much better chance to succeed.

If the group project is anything like the Spartan basketball team, it will probably actually be better without Nick Ward.

The interview with Day wasn't bad, though there were a lot of "ummmms" going on. Sounds like he may have had some input into getting Dwayne into Washington. Good for the Skins for taking advantage of having someone on staff who knows Day and can get the inside scoop. Now Haskins can go pound the Giants twice a year for many seasons.

Dwayne’s head was hilarious.  Unfortunately, ESPN’s shameful exploitation of a declining Corso was not. I understand the man has had health issues (stroke) but he slurred Haskins name and looked like he was about to have another stroke when Herbie mercifully removed the prop from Lee’s head.

Let the man retire with dignity.

First, it's about a decade too late for that, and second, who's stoping him? Corso isn't being 'exploited,' he's just one of those guys who cannot let go. He does not have it within himself to say, "I had my time in the sun, now it's someone else's turn to shine."

HS
Run_Fido_Run's picture

And if neither player makes the starting lineup of their respective team Sams, Daniel Jones will be much more useful on the sidelines than Gary will be. Jones can help the Giants analyze opposing defensive tendencies using spreadsheets and whatnot. Gary can sit slack jawed on the bench yapping about how he was the best player in the 2019 draft.

HS
Defiance's picture

I’m having a hard time deciding if NYG not selecting Haskins or GBP taking Gary is a bigger disaster.

add in that the Packers then traded up 21 spots to take Darnell Savage, Jr and that's a tough call.

They had to trade up to 21 to get Savage, who was 89th on our board? A nice player, but this is a questionable move by the Packers.

The really incredible thing about that streak is that it's not like the Big Ten wasn't producing successful NFL QBs during that time - the length of the streak includes two future NFL Hall of Famers (Brees and Brady), plus several other guys who started a bunch of games like Kirk Cousins. Yet none of them were quite desirable enough coming out of college to sneak into the first round.

HS
Brandon26841's picture

About the only thing more pointless than mock drafts (which I still look at throughout the year) are "draft grades" immediately after the draft or people complaining about your draft selection. The Jones over Haskins pick was pretty shocking (even though it's been rumored a long time), but Jones could literally be a HOF QB and Haskins could be out of the league in 4 years (I don't think either of things happen, but still). Would the Giants have blown it then?

Remember how pissed off Texans fans were about J.J. Watt? What a reach he was? Save the draft complaints for 3 years down the line.

HS
Blackcoffee's picture

3 years! no way, I don't wanna take the long view, not with respect to the NFL and big business and people making lots of money and making sure they cannot lose even if the team that pays them loses. Corporate America, corporate football has little to do with the actual players on the field.

Gettleman WTF. In 2018 and one of the deepest QB draft classes in a decade, maybe more, he takes a RB with the second pick. A very good player, but could have traded down for more picks and got him later in the round.

In 2019 and probably historically deep draft for D line he reaches for a QB most had as 4th best. He could have traded that pick to the ‘Skins for more picks and still gotten the kid in the second round.

Hope the best for Dwayne. If he’s groomed and developed he can be special. But also concerned. ‘Skins have been the organization of doom for QBs.

Initially yes but if you think about it, their reasons make sense. If they drafted Haskin's, it would ruin Eli's last couple seasons by the fans booing Eli off the field for the new shiny rookie with the rocket arm. No one will be doing that with this guy from duke. Why wouldn't they just sign one of the many FA retread journeyman QB's still holding clipboards to keep the manning families fragile egos unharmed. One of the deepest drafts especially for lineman on both sides. The top 10 all could have had franchise changing players, arguably all the way to 19. Thought Barkley was the right choice last year even though RB's are not a sought after commodity in the 1st round the last 10-15 years. Zeke smashed that door down imo paving the way for a slight different thought on RB's worth.
