Great article from Birm:

https://lettermenrow.com/ohio-state-football-recruiting/ohio-state-recru...

Couple of quotes that standout:

"It was not until January that Day really took over the program, and in doing so he replaced five assistant coaches. That means not only did these top recruits need to get used to the idea of a new guy in charge, in a number of cases they had to be introduced to a new position coach and primary recruiter, further pushing Ohio State behind in the relationship game."

"When considering the deficit Day and his coaches have been working from, it’s actually quite remarkable that the Buckeyes are still in the conversation for some of these big names at all. All the transition inside of the program from January and into the start of spring ball meant a lack of the big recruiting weekends that most schools are selling as Day and his staff focused on getting to know kids and their families in more intimate and personal settings. And, oh yeah, not a lot of kids are traveling to Ohio in February anyway."

HS
LB U's picture

Fall can't get here soon enough for Day and the new staff. Right now it's too easy for everyone to throw shade their way in the recruiting world.

HS
Buck68's picture

LB U:  perhaps it is always easy to 'throw shade', whether one 'sees' through rose colored glasses, or dark glasses... or any glass that has logs or specks or multi-colors in it.

as perhaps the 'seer'... does not quite 'see', and 'so strongly' feels he does, he has the power...to blind himself by his chosen ways of seeing others.

Meanwhile, by myriads of fortuitous 'happenings'... the Fall that has not yet "got here"... will get here...soon enough for all of us, regardless of what shade we see.

HS
tampatom's picture

Since most of offensive coaches stayed, we are doing a pretty good job on that side of the ball, defense is lagging for reasons Spooner mentioned in Birm article...Oline still a mystery why it seems we keep missing on higher ranked recruits

HS
urbansjacket2's picture

I don't think OL is a mystery...it's linked to the position coach ;)

HS
Buck68's picture

Urbansjacket2:  some call this "link" you speak of "relevance"... and then feel compelled to tell others they pick, whether they are 'relevant' or not.

this is no 'mystery'... for each and all of us 'have'... an ego.  What comes out of our ego is... for good, or evil... but good and evil are not based on the egotist.

This is only rationally 'relevant'... in every detail, which still leaves plenty of daily 'mystery' for us to pursue and discuss.

IMO very useful example you provide here - "links to the position coach".  ;-{)}  I am exceedingly glad you did not include my feelings...  and so pollute your example....   ;-{)}

HS
Cincybuckeye's picture

If "missing on higher ranked recruits" means getting the #1 center and OT, I wonder what it looks like when you're getting them.

HS
buckslan's picture

Exactly. I have no clue why people even think that. Look at our OL recruiting the last few years. Our center, RG, and possible RT (NPF) were all 5* recruits. And we currently have Paris Johnson, Luke Wypler, and could land Carmody as well. But I guess we need someone to blame and Stud fits the agenda.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Common sense and cruitin' paranoia/whining do not play well together.

HS
Bucks19's picture

Exactly Cincy. Some just like to bitch

HS
buckbuck12's picture

Once we start kicking some ass this year, we will have the five stars, until then it's going to be like this.

HS
bd2999's picture

Need to do more than that. Day has to show that he can win, win the conference. Making the playoff would not hurt either. Given Clemson has won two titles in the last few years, they are going to be good for a while. OSU needs to start making the playoffs again to really start getting some of these guys.

They will get some without but they need the major momentum to do it.

That said, the guy always seemed like a long shoot for OSU, at least IMO.

HS
logamaniac's picture

don't we already have at least two 5 stars committed (20/21) at the moment?  I am pretty sure that Alabama, a team we can all agree is the recruiting champion over the last decade or so, doesn't get every 5 star every recruiting cycle either.

HS
buckbuck12's picture

As Bresee is off the board, why haven't we pushed on Desmond Evans?

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Been hoping we could get some kind of update with us involved with him but there's been close to nothing.

Edit: also seems like we haven't pushed at all for Fadil Diggs and seems like forever since there's been a Jacolbe Cowan update

HS
buckbuck12's picture

His to choices look like SC, NC & NC State. I think we could beat them if we have another 12 win+ season, but gotta get him in to the campus too!

HS
OsuSuperman's picture

I love all the recent speculation on Kendall Milton. If he is truly between Ohio State and Oklahoma, Ohio State is a no brainer after taking a look at the depth chart. Why would he go to Oklahoma and compete for reps with the other 5 star when he could go to Ohio State and be the feature back from day 1.

Go Bucks!

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

BG thinks we're in a good spot for him and Givler said the staff did a hell of a job on his visit.

Also can't hurt to have Gee Scott and his dad as family friends and recruting him. Plus Milton has family in OH.

HS
Special Agent Dale Cooper's picture

Between reading this board and other fan sites, there are a ton of Buckeye fans who have act like guys like Zach Harrison, NPF, Justin Fields, Tyreke Johnson, Teradja Mitchell, Harry Miller, Garret Wilson, Jack Sawyer, Luke Wypler, Jack Miller, Gee Scott etc were not recruiting wins but rather guys who were already here and always here and somehow don’t count when comparing our recruiting prowess against other schools.

Fans like that tend to only look at the recruits who choose to go to another fine school as the recruiting battles that matter.  Pretty weak if you ask me.

HS
SpaceBuckeye's picture

PREACH! +1 from me.

Those who say they can and those who say they can't are both right. Which one are you?

HS
Octobersownlibra's picture

Shhh you are not fitting the panic mode theme,

Ryan day the goat....and yes I pee on ttun all the time

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Think some fans on the sites are also short changing Darrion Henry. Bresee gets all the pub and that's fine bc he is a great player but I think Henry is on a similar level. Prob gets taken for granted bc he's from OH and considered a lock to be a Buckeye but he has a ton of talent. Could be wrong but I believe it was either Birm or Givler who said Henry is a larger more agile version of Dremont Jones. I think we'd all take that.

HS
buckbuck12's picture

Would take a Dremont comparison any day. He is should be a first pick and is better than Clemson's Dexter Lawrence too!

HS
Triv's picture

Henry is a larger more agile version of Dremont Jones

This comment basically already says what I'm about to say, but I'll add a player comp just for fun. Henry as a prospect projects favorably to current San Francisco 49er DT Deforest Buckner, who just came off a 12 sack season and was a top 10 pick.

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

HS
stxbuck's picture

Bigger, faster version of Dremont Jones-let's see if Bressee turns into that!  Henry has been curiously underhyped for his massive potential, imo.

HS

HS
BumJuiceIsBitter's picture

Not even to mention Browning and Wyatt Davis ( both over Bama)

I tried bum juice once, it was bitterly disappointing.

HS

As well as Shaun Wade. I remember hearing how he was a Bama flip all year and it never happened

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

BK saying he's feeling more and more like he always has with Paris and that he still ends up a Buckeye and will make another unofficial visit to Cbus next month.

https://247sports.com/college/ohio-state/Board/120/Contents/Bill-Kurelic...

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Adding to this but I know Givler has said in the past that unless the visits to Cbus stop we are good. Has also said previously that barring a catastrophic start to the season Paris will be a Buckeye.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Putting in proper thread now but Hartline offered NC WR Muhsin Muhammad tonight. Son of former NFL player and a current 4*.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Pretty damn good film. Also in case you're wondering his QB in the film is Drake Maye one of our top 2021 QB targets.

https://a.hudl.com/video/3/7984069/5c0d3764f5603e0f746e0372

HS
Attack51's picture

I know this is 2020 thread but damn, Maye looks good. This may be unpopular to some, but I'm way higher on he and Garcia than McCord/McCarthy

HS
Hanawi_'s picture

Interesting offer now. He's already visited a couple of times and seemed like OSU had a number of WR irons in the fire already to chase another one.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Well if we gets pushed up the board and we land him it will be pretty awesome to have chants of "Mooooooooooooossssseeeee" in the shoe.

HS

Looks like both Miquan grace and jutahn McClain are both announcing their commitments on July 4th....

HS

Only McLain has an offer from what I see...UK or Cincy I’m guessing if they’re package deal

If Ann Arbor is a whore, what's Harbaugh for going back to her?

HS
CardaleFTW's picture

Damn, what's going on at Georgia? An employee in the recruiting department fired, and another one suspended? Interesting.

It's a beautiful day in Columbus, Ohio... and TTUN still sucks.

HS
LB U's picture

Recruiting program coordinator fired, and director of on-campus recruiting suspended. Definetly interested to know what they did.

HS
stxbuck's picture

I'm guessing it involves dancin' ladies or something of that ilk........................

HS
buckslan's picture

Can they just be investigated already? It's clear as heck something fishy is going on down there.

HS
LB U's picture

It's only a matter of time.. It's a ticking time bomb as far as I'm concerned.

HS
Grisle's picture

Nothing major will come of it. They are an sec school afterall.

HS
CorchUrb's picture

Can you imagine if this happened here? ESPN would send out the whole CFB crew for interviews, Brett Mcmurphy would probably move here and interview everyone within a 5 mile radius of the school

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

That's what happens when you cater to the NCAA and treat them like they're the FBI. Schools down south just laugh at them and challenge them.

HS
Smitty516's picture

More specifically, anyone in a 5 mile radius that has an axe to grind with Ohio State...

HS
Sanantonefan's picture

All they have to do is shut up and admit to nothing and the NCAA will do nothing. The NCAA only hammers programs that admit to wrongdoing.

There's the depth transfer that was predicted. He ain't visiting just to visit. He's a local kid. This is a business trip.

The Buckeye Way

HS
Special Agent Dale Cooper's picture

Knew his dad played here but did not know that Fred Pagac is his uncle. The Buckeye ties run deep and this thing likely has been in motion since the minute Baldwin hit the portal, if not before.

HS
BGSUBucksFan's picture

Due to our limited options to fill Baldwin's spot, I'll take it. Just hope no one thinks a guy who got beat out at Kentucky is going to keep title hopes alive should Fields go down. New era of QB recruiting? I sure hope not. All it takes is one season of meaningful reps to get drafted. Here's to hoping Day can keep this from becoming a trend.

HS
swflbuckeye1's picture

If fields is out for a lengthy time I agree Gunner is not gonna win us a Title. However, if Fields is out 2-3 weeks this kid can get it done. Kenny G got it done for a few weeks until Braxton was able to come back and I think Gunner can do the same. But I agree if fields it out half the season or more we will not win the title.

HS
Belliott's picture

I’d look at what yurcich did last year with a former walk on. If you have enough talent everywhere else, you can mitigate it. Title? Probably not. But anyone who isn’t practicing revisionist history would have said the same in 2014 with Braxton and JT going down.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Been reported he got beat out bc they wanted to have a running threat at QB to make a more dynamic backfield and shorten games which worked out well for them.

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

Watching the highlights of Hoak he reminds me a lot of....Matthew Baldwin.   So why wouldn't everyone want that?

Plus, once Day and Yurcich get a hold of him I think he can be a very good backup QB.

Fields of Dreams

HS
buckbuck12's picture

If the thing at Georgia could affect recruits, we could sweep Sherman and keep Johnson so yeah!

HS
George Hennen's picture

Kedrick Bingley-Jones got a CB to UNC from an NC ST insider. Don’t know much about our staffs DL board this cycle but he was probably near the top behind Henry.

HS
buckbuck12's picture

Givler said that they will try to reload next year because they can get Najee Story, Sawyer and another guy from Erasmus Hall.

HS
Ludwig Yards's picture

I think Jahzion Harris is the Erasmus kid.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Jahzion likely to end up at LB per Givler

HS
Northbrook's picture

Yeah he isn't going to be DL size.

HS
Alex Ranttila's picture

He is DL size. He is 6 foot 4, which is plenty for DE. He just needs to add some good weight like Chase Young or JJB.

HS
BumJuiceIsBitter's picture

It's not as simple as height. You need to have a wider frame to be a 6'4" DL than a 6'4" LB. The LB will be about 235 pounds while the DL will be anywhere from 265-300 depending on what position they play.

I tried bum juice once, it was bitterly disappointing.

HS
Belliott's picture

If Hubbard could get to DL size, pretty much anyone LB size can.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Right now he is something like 6'4 205-skinny as rail. NFL ready LBs ideally play at 240-250 or so.

HS
Triv's picture

This isn't a horrible plan imo. We are going to lose 5 guys along the DL this year, including all 4 starters (Young, Cooper, Cornell, Hamilton, Landers) but in 2020 we're still going to be trotting out a starting 4 of Tyreke Smith, Tyler Friday, Tommy Togiai, and Taron Vincent who have all contributed. And behind them we'll still have Harrison, Potter, JJB, and Haskell Garrett rotating reps. Assuming we add Henry I think we need to take one more DL this year then load up with 5 guys in 2021

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

You know when or where he said this? Haven't seen anything from him or anyone saying this.

Givler usually does a big board type post for each position group but hasn't done one for DL. Haven't seen him mention a big board for DL when asked either.

Then you had BG saying it's been a head scratcher to this point and couldn't even give names outside of Henry or Thomas moving down.

HS
buckbuck12's picture

Said it on Unscripted Ohio podcast. Look it up on soundcloud!

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Forgot he is a guest on there sometimes, thanks!

HS
CardaleFTW's picture

Here is Georgia's recruiting operations coordinator that got fired yesterday. Yeah, I wouldn't mind being recruited by her either.

It's a beautiful day in Columbus, Ohio... and TTUN still sucks.

HS
Calgarybuck's picture

Plus you know she's got friends on that level too helping the cause.

HS
Northbrook's picture

Is that a pose or is she disabled?

HS
LB U's picture

Dear God.. it's like Kirby went to all the sororities on campus and picked out the hottest chick he could find and made her director of recruiting.. honestly kind of genius.

HS
LB U's picture

And after further review, there's at least a 100% chance she was sleeping with the players/or recruits. Rick Pitino got fired for hiring escort services for visiting prospects.. Kirby literally hired one of them and made her director of recruiting lol.

HS
Cincybuckeye's picture

Hopefully she can focus on taking care of her lawn now.

HS

HS

Lol. All of the sudden I feel a lot better about keeping Paris in this recruiting class

HS
Smitty516's picture

Could explain why Paris was down there so many times in the last couple of months...

HS
stxbuck's picture

This development might be a good thing, in terms of getting Paris Johnson off his Georgia kick. His mama probably won't be cool with him making any more visits to Athens-and his dad works for the Steelers/isn't around to give him the wink.......

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

His father was the assistant director of player personnel at Pitt but resigned five days ago. I haven't been able to find anything in terms of where he's landed or rumored to be headed next. By NCAA rule, if he goes to a college, his son is prohibited from playing there.

Bylaw 11.4:

In football, during a two-year period before a prospective student-athlete's anticipated enrollment and a two-year period after the prospective student-athlete's actual enrollment, an institution shall not employ (or enter into a contract for future employment with) an individual associated with the prospective student-athlete in any athletics department noncoaching staff position or in a strength and conditioning staff position.

This definition includes, but is not limited to, parents, legal guardians, handlers, personal trainers and coaches. An individual who meets this definition retains such status during the enrollment of the prospective student-athlete at the institution.

I'll say this much lawn maintenance is a MUST on both fronts Spooner. Who likes playing in long, thick unmaintained lawn's? Extremely difficult on both ends;)

I’m just curious, how has that not gotten huge red flags by the NCAA. I mean what makes her qualified to be a recruiting coordinator? Just curious bc she’s preatty young. What does she know about recruiting or did she goto the patino school of recruiting?

I think Ohio State's director of on-campus recruiting is a young, attractive woman as well.  I'd say it's pretty common, but that employee's behavior and qualifications are clearly the key factors.  Would be really interesting to hear what actually happened at Georgia.

Gee Scott squatting 585

https://mobile.twitter.com/overtime/status/1121128199075790848

Someone in the Buckeye Planet threads made a comp for Gee that makes some sense......Larry Fitzgerald

HS
Cooper's picture

I know people like to moan about the half reps, but I’ve never seen a high school athlete (sans actual power lifter) have perfect squat form. It takes time. I think the greater point is like you said, this kid has Larry Fitzgerald type lower body strength. He’s going to be damn good.

This is definitely where I parked my car.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Def know what you're saying bc I do power lifting and from experience I never go beyond a certain weight limit with squats. I know if I did my form would go to hell and lead to injury.

Would also agree and say Gee is built similar to Larry was in college. Both not track burners but have enough speed to get behind defenses. Both run great routes and have reliable hands. Knew he was really good when he committed but he's gone way beyond that level this offseason IMO.

HS
Cooper's picture

Right, I tend to never go over a certain weight for squat, as well. All the lower body injuries I suffered in high school and college, if anything, actually taught me how to perfect my squat form with appropriate weight.

Hartline is going to have an embarrassment of riches for these next few years.

This is definitely where I parked my car.

247 BM5 had Wiltfong on and he has us in the top 3 for Rosengarten the OT out of Colorado. That is a guy I'd love to see become a Buckeye. Take him and Carmody and shut her down.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Wiltfong CB for CO OL Roger Rosengarten. Said he will be back on campus this summer but didn't give a reason why for the CB. Rosengarten is ranked 88 overall on 247's rankings regardless of position.

https://247sports.com/college/ohio-state/Board/120/Contents/Roger-Roseng...

Add this guy and Carmody and call it a day.

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

Very interesting.  Would we be able to land 3 top-tier Tackles in Johnson Jr, Carmody, and Rosengarten?  I'm sure this CB will trigger a lot of angst in regards to Paris Johnson.

Fields of Dreams

HS
Spartan13's picture

Having 3 with one of them being Leroux makes sense, but Paris, Rosengarten, and Carmody are all OTs can't see a class with 3 top 100 tackles.

Thank you in advance to the hardass who responds "WE DONT WANT SOMEBODY WHO WONT COMPETE!!!!!"

HS
ELJTSA76's picture

If they will all three commit, I would accept and not waste my time thinking about where they are ranked relative to one another. You just take them.

HS
Spartan13's picture

You would obviously take them thats not what I am saying. I am saying is it realistic we could get all 3. If Rosengarten or Carmody commit why would the other want to commit here? If you aren't better than Paris Johnson or the other top 100 OT congrats you arent playing for 4 years. Rosengarten and Carmody could go basically wherever they want and be the star Oline commit, for Leroux he is signing up to be developed by OSU and knowing he will redshirt and compete for playing time in 3 or 4 years.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Rosengarten's film:

https://www.hudl.com/video/3/8450636/5c14b47442064b09b023eaac

Playjng with a mean streak is not a problem for him.

HS
Northbrook's picture

Also said the 6'7" height listed is generous. Is he long enough to play OT? Looks like it to me. In any case one of him and Carmody could earn a starting spot at OG and have the versatility to slide out if needed.

HS
Buckeye06's picture

If they say 6'7'' is generous then he isn't 6'3'', he's 6'5'' plus which is plenty big

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

That's always the question: will they all end up at OT in college? Chances are no, so you take them and figure it out.

HS
napbuck's picture

I’d still like to have Atteberry to go along with Rosengarten and Carmody, but I’m greedy.

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

For the OG spot I'd rank them as Rogers, Hatchett, and then Atteberry.  But any one of the three will do just fine!

Fields of Dreams

HS

If Stud pulls of Johnson, Carmody, Rosengarten, Wypler and Rogers... the fanbase may be saying "all is forgiven"

HS
urbansjacket2's picture

Per BG in his chat today, has Trayanum, Drennen, Darrion Henry, Jaheim Thomas, and Rickey Hyatt as confidently in (take it to the bank...).

HS
Spartan13's picture

Don't know anything about Hyatt,he's 6'0" 195 ran a 4.67 40 and 4.00 shuttle. other than the shuttle those measurables aren't very impressive, and with a ranking of 515 in the composite it's kind of a head scratcher. Are we happy with him? IDK if he is a safety or bullet but either way seems like a guy we should be circling back on if we miss out on Ransom, Morant, and Makari Paige. If I am wrong somebody let me know.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

He also ran a 4.5 at a previous event and he would be a great addition in the bullet role. Since you're a star gazer lately he's also being bumped up to 4*.

HS
Spartan13's picture

I literally said I know nothing about him. I didn't know if he is a safety or bullet. His opening 40 was 4.68 which is very slow for a safety. 6'0" 195 is 20 pounds lighter than Brandon White if not more. His composite is outside of the top 600. He lately has not been bumped up by anybody to a 4 star. I'm not complaining about stars but being that low for somebody who hasn't done any research on him is concerning. Kourt Williams is 6'1" 216 ran 4.60 and has a 40" vertical. 247 also has him as 199 overall. I do not see a single reason to take Hyatt over Williams. That is why I asked if somebody can justify it. But thank you for saying I am a star gazer and not answering my question!!!

HS
Ludwig Yards's picture

The coaches like him, and offered. I guess that's a justification of sorts. And, perhaps they'd like both Hyatt and Williams.

HS

HS

You know nothing about him yet spout off 40 time, measurables, and his ranking. But other than that you know nothing about him....lol.

Williams is 6-1 215 right now. In our S&C program the only players that lose weight play on the line. Williams will grow into a LB and insiders on the west coast say he's destined for LB.

The bullet position if the articles on it are to be understood is basically another safety on the field. Kourt Williams is not a safety. Hyatt plays safety in high school.

A suggestion might be to watch his film before making  assumptions. It's ridiculous people can make assumptions without doing one iota of research to back up their assumptions or opinions.

Does that answer it for you Mr. ASSume?

HS
Spartan13's picture

It isn’t an assumption if I say “I don’t know somebody with more knowedkge please correct me” and yes I am capable of looking up his profile on 247 and seeing what he did at camps lmao. And no that doesn’t really say anything about Hyatt just that Kourt is going to get bigger and may not be a good fit at bullet. I’m sorry for assuming people on this board were capable of answering a question without flipping out at the notion a slow low ranked safety may not be the best option.

Givler said a second QB in 2020 is a formality now. Staff talked with Miller and he's good with it. Also said don't expect it to be a big name guy.

HS
Ludwig Yards's picture

Prater has been and still is my top choice for that 2nd guy. Dude has some nice upside, IMO.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Yeah but the second QB has to commit knowing Miller is the franchise. Don't think Prater is going to agree to that. Not when he has other good P5 options.

HS
Ludwig Yards's picture

Perhaps not. I imagine the Dantonios and Fickells of the world are telling him he's the man. Although if having other Power 5 options is the dividing line, we are gonna be digging really deep.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

That's why Givler said to not expect a big name. Yurcich is on the road looking at kids now.

HS
huffdaddy's picture

I think it's the reverse: Miller has to be comfortable that the person being recruited won't beat him out. Whoever gets recruited - Prater or whoever - can certainly come in believing that they can beat out Miller.

First order of business: Don't lose Miller

Second order: Get the best QB available who doesn't screw up the first order.

"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." - Nick Saban 1/2/15.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

I don't think it's at all about the competition with another QB. I think It's more the fact that we've been telling him he's our guy for years now, that he's the franchise basically, and then we go out and recruit another top guy? You do that and you're asking for him to decommit.

HS
brothadudeguy's picture

We just need to go find a 2 or 3 star guy from Ohio or just loves Ohio state and wants to be part of the program because clearly kids nowadays dont want anything to do with competition. But I know as soon as Day does that then we will have people on here saying "2 and 3 star QBs? There goes our recruiting" lol

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

I don't think that's it. I think we need to look at it differently. To me, it's a guy who brings a different skillset but whose game can grow. Miller will never be that mobile. But bring in a mobile guy and teach him how to throw and you've potentially got another Marcus Mariotta or Tua Tagovailoa.

Bro...what? Tua is a thrower first.

Those who say they can and those who say they can't are both right. Which one are you?

HS
GVerrilli92's picture

Tua is an accurate thrower on the run and can execute a couple types of quick passes, I wouldn't call him a pocket passer.

This actually isn't a bad idea though. Indiana and Maryland have had some pretty impressive success with 'change of pace' type, younger QBs who are in the developmental stages of their careers. Take maybe a less physically impressive Terrelle Pryor type, and turn him into a thrower while using him as a run threat sparingly as a young backup.

Kitties aren't supposed to smell like cigarettes, they're supposed to smell like kitties.

WAT ? Pass the bong, dude.

Cant remember how many times I flipped to a Bama game this past season where every other play was a Tua 50-yard bomb to Jerry Jeudy. The boy can pass from the pocket.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture
  1. Tua was the #1 ranked dual threat QB in the nation as a senior. He ran for 576 yards as a junior.
  2. In two of Alabama’s last three recruiting classes, Saban has taken two QBs: Tua and pocket passer Mac Jones in 2017, and Tua’s younger brother, Taulia (482 rushing yards as a senior) and Paul Tyson (only 66 rushing yards as a senior). In other words, QBs who aren’t replicas but with varying skill sets. That’s my point.

NHBuckeye's picture

Would this still be the case if Hoak comes on board?  Hoak would be the backup in 2019 & 2020.  Miller would be a backup in 2020 and then takes over in 2021, the year that McCord comes in as a backup.  I guess it's really 2021 when the depth gets thin again which may be why a second guy in 2020 would be warranted.

This makes sense to me that Clemson has something going on down there, they have been irrelevant for many years than in the last five all of a sudden become a top notch program. That doesn’t usually happen overnight, yes I know that have won two of the last three national championships but I think something is up down there that smells fishy. First the fingers in not so nice places, second the juicing and now the final nail in the coffin.

HS
Mastro16's picture

Don’t want to derail the thread (cause that never happens and the rules here deserve honoring), but Clemson has had a pretty steady growth for about 10 years. Started out average, then around 2010-13 they were good but couldn’t get over the hump, now they’re great. And Dabo has never needed ridiculous recruiting classes to get that done. Maybe their program cheats heavily, maybe it doesn’t, but under Dabo they’ve progressed steadily for a long time. Let’s get off our high horses for now

Was thinking about potential 2nd QB options for this class, so I decided to look down 247s QB rankings and see what guys could be realistic options. It was mentioned it would not be any relatively higher ranked guys or names we've heard before like Prater, Crenshaw, or Riley Keller, so here's some realistic names to look out for: Roman Purcell (IN), Ira Armstead (IN), Raequan Beal (MI), Ricky Ortega (PA), MJ Horton (Cincy), Baron May (New Albany), a couple NJ guys in Logan Clouse, Ryan Clark, Hank Shapiro, and Andre Parker. Then there's Michael Franklin (Eastside Catholic) who was teammates with G Scott. Most of these guys are currently lower ranked 3 stars or 2 stars. I included a couple NJ kids because we typically recruit well in those regions.

I’m really curious to see how things shape up with WRs and RBs. Obviously, there are the 5-star guys we would love. But if we don’t land them, there are high 4-star guys who we can’t afford to miss out on, in my opinion.

I’d love to hear thoughts/insights on how this might play out:

RBs/Ath:

Top Tier: Milton, Robinson, Berger, and maybe even Toafili

4-Star Ohio guys: Trayanum, Drennen, McClain

WR (with 2 studs already committed):

Top Tier: Fleming, Jarrett, and even Rosemy

4-star guys: Bunkley-Shelton, Muhammad

If guys like Berger, Toafili, and Bunkley Shelton wanted to commit, would we tell them to wait? Especially Berger (a top 50 guy who was just on campus and both his CBs currently point to us) and Bunkley-Shelton (who seems to love us...but isn’t as highly touted as the guys ahead of him).

Some of you have been following recruiting much longer than me. How do you see things playing out at these positions?

HS
buckeyetyler's picture

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

In regards to that post my feeling is Berger is not in the class of Milton and Robinson. Perhaps that is because those two are pure RBs and the type of workhorse backs teams are looking for versus HBs who seem to be easier to find. Berger's ranking seems to be higher than the amount of attention he's been getting but perhaps I'm wrong about that. That he took the time to actually visit UMass after they offered him was eyebrow raising.

HS
BGSUBucksFan's picture

Hoak is also a long way from being ready to be counted on, let's be real.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

He's more ready than Baldwin was and played more than Fields.

HS
BGSUBucksFan's picture

Game experience isn't the only thing that makes a guy ready. If you don't think he's a downgrade from Baldwin, not sure what to tell you other than to set your scarlet glasses down.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Huh? Baldwin hasn't thrown a pass in an real game in 2 years. Lol I'm telling you he's NOT a downgrade from Baldwin. So you have your scarlet glasses comment mixed up and backwards.

The belief among our fanbase that we'd be perfectly fine with Baldwin should Fields go down is utterly ridiculous. There's way more of an unknown with him than with someone who has taken snaps at this level like Hoak.

HS
BGSUBucksFan's picture

A guy handpicked by Day who clearly has the tools you need to succeed in this offense and who has a year under his belt in the system is much more valuable than what Hoak can currently offer.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Ross Fulton who knows more about football than either you or I even said we wouldn't be any better off with Baldwin than we are with Hoak.

Lots of others who watch team practices have said the same.

Day also handpicked Fields to come in and start over Baldwin without any years under his belt in his system

HS
BGSUBucksFan's picture

I'm not sure how anyone can say that without having seen Hoak in practices. And Day would have been dumb to not go after Fields, so that's a moot point. I never said he was the next Haskins. I'm just saying Baldwin would be a much more valuable backup.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

And I'm saying there's no way you can state one way or the other who is more valuable as a backup when both are unknowns including Fields too. Theres also the fact BG said this morning Gunnar knows his role as backup and won't cause rifts in the locker room if he doesn't ever take a snap. Also said he will act as a great "big brother" to Fields on the field and in the film room.  I would say that's pretty damn valuable there wouldn't you?

How do you know it would be difficult for him at home? I'm genuinely curious are you a family friend?

I don't think it will be an issue at all. He lives 90 miles from Happy Valley and PSU does not have a monopoly on PA prospects. They tend to end up all over the country compared to states like Ohio or Alabama.

Birm article on Shermanand Jarrett.

https://lettermenrow.com/ohio-state-football-recruiting/ohio-state-bucke...

Loss of Urban prob too much to overcome with Sherman IMO.

And this quote about Jarrett stands out: "His family ties to Ohio, and a mother that would’ve preferred he play for Brian Hartline and the Buckeyes, haven’t been enough to create that change to this point. Is his recruitment 100-percent over? I suppose we’ll see what happens from here."

Long story short unless Rakim changes his approach to recruiting he won't be in the class. As Birm was alluding to in his last article our staff isn't going to chase a recruit who doesn't want to be chased by them or demonstrate that.

Those who say they can and those who say they can't are both right. Which one are you?

Not sure but here's the write up for Jaheim:

Thomas is a physically impressive outside linebacker that worked out with his own position group, but could have also turned some heads as an outside edge rusher if he elected to. The 6-foot-3, 222-pounder was shockingly agile and covered tremendous ground in pass coverage against smaller, quicker running backs and easily shadowed big tight ends. He made a few pass break-ups with relative ease, showing off as a well-rounded outside backer. It was enough to secure an invite to the Five-Star Challenge in June

How can an issue with a plain force an earlier flight, wouldn’t it be delayed. Sounds like they decided to leave early.

Problems with flights aren’t rare, perhaps that person was rebooked through a different airline or through a different connection.

No idea what you’re referencing though.

Sherman left OSU early from his official visit apparently because of flight issues.

Which is fine bc stuff happens and nearly all airlines suck. But still doesn't look great for us and AE also said so.

It's all good though and I hope our staff really pushes for Melton now and takes Kourt Williams. It's always good to nab a kid from Good Counsel in MD and Bosco in CA. Both are elite programs to have good relationships at.

Pass on Jarrett (his recruitment is way from being over - seems to enjoy the spotlight). Thought he was CB’d to Tennessee sometime back.  Interesting he’d commit to LSU after only one visit.

Give me Fleming - All. Day. Long.
