I think Fields will be a solid starting QB, but if he gets injured it will be difficult to win games with current the back-ups. Hope they can add another option before fall camp. In any event, the Coaches have to get that QB room ready to perform.
A little bit.
I'm not too worried about the depth, just about Fields. No matter how touted and talented he is, we're still talking about a guy who is effectively a redshirt freshman in terms of experience (even though he's a soph by eligibility) - so while I do think he's going to be really good eventually, I'm expecting to see at least a few ups-and-downs early in the year and can't really say "not at all".
What's typically feared ? The unknown.
Get additional bodies. Coach them up, play the best 3 guys in games 1 through 5. Have a solid backup plan.

Good to read on 11W, and not always seen.
In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...
What, me worry?
Varys: I've always hated the bells. They ring for horror, a dead king, a city under siege.
Tyrion: A wedding.
Little bit, focusing on depth.
I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...
Not at all. It’s April.
If you're an Ohio State football fan and you're not concerned about the state of the quarterback room, then either you're not paying attention or you don't really care. Three well-thought-of, highly rated quarterbacks have left in the past year, turning what was a clear team strength into a glaring team weakness. We've all seen what poor QB play has done to *ichigan, and now their room, even with Fields projecting as a special player, is significantly better than OSU's. Chugunov is not an acceptable option, but he's the next (and only) man up, acceptable or not. This is extremely concerning, and there are almost no options prior to Miller coming in next year. I'll be holding my breath every time Fields gets tackled this season.
When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's
Well said... personally, I'm not counting on Miller being here until he is actually, physically on campus and tossing passes at the Shoe. Recruiting is about as fickle of a process as there is...
The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced
I'll be holding my breath every time Fields gets tackled this season.
You bring up an interesting angle. Fields is a dynamic QB that can run, but with no real depth at the position it doesn't make sense to run him very much.
As for the lost quarterbacks, losing Baldwin is probably the worst. Even if we get a graduate transfer, that QB will have to learn the entire offense in fall camp. Losing Burrow then Martell could be absorbed, but now we're down to bare bones.

Not at all.
Help! Help! The sky is falling.

If Justin Fields gets hurt, the season is over. If he doesn't, all is well. I've already made my peace with that.
I'm pretty much in the same boat, Kevin.

They can't win playing without Fields, or playing with one hand tied behind their backs. They just need to get on with it and not play in fear of the what ifs.
What little concern I have is for the scout team. It would be better if they had a more capable quarterback running the scout team.

They should be fine if Fields stays healthy, and the starting QB does stay healthy most of the time. But the downside if he were to get hurt is massive indeed. The Buckeyes have had to play teams that were reduced to using walk-ons at QB in recent years (I think both Maryland and Illinois used walk-ons when they came to Columbus in 2017), and the results were what you'd expect.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
What ticks me off is that Baldwin played in the spring game and then ditched OSU. An 11W staffer (can't remember which) stated that this was a long time in the making, not just snap judgment.
Baldwin could have entered the portal much earlier, giving our staff more time to find a replacement. But no, it's late April now. Thanks for nothing, Baldwin.
Yeah because if day would of said “ Matthew, you’re in the lead to being QB1” all of a sudden he wouldn’t be as homesick... but day probably said “matthew, Justin is our guy, he has been our guy since he showed up” Baldwin’s home sickness really kicked in
I’m not worried at all... let’s Fn go baby #1 in your program #1 in your hearts buckeye fans!!!
Oh and another thing, how about we stop worrying about QBs and back ups and injuries, we wouldn’t have to worry about QB injuries if we could keep the in state 5* O line man from going elsewhere and not recruit/offer/sign 3* not ranked ham n eggas... we should shift the priority to the slobs rather then some jabroni in the transfer portal coming from some MAC school or some third stringer from some A&M school
A little. I’m very confident that Fields is better than Martell or Baldwin. I think he’ll be very good. My only worry is the same as everyones...injury. We need to get a solid backup in the transfer portal soon.
All our eggs are in one basket. I’m going to be cringing every time Fields takes a hard hit, which may be often with his run ability. Hope he and the coaches understand the importance of staying healthy over gaining an extra yard or two in noncritical possessions.
So of all of the QBs which one give us the best chance of winning - Fields, Martell, or Baldwin? Assume Fields does not come - Baldwin would likely have transferred if did not leap Tate. So only have Martell instead of Fields - I will take what we go over a backup that might be good - but not good enough to win it all.
You have a QB whose talent is in part that he can run the football. Takes one time of getting to the ground or out of bounds too late for the season to be pretty much over.
First and goal at the five and Arch is getting the ball.
I chose neutral. In all the years of Ohio St. football in my lifetime I can't remember too many years where we've had to even use the backup q.b. in games other than mop up duty. Sure it would be nice to have a reliable backup, but if Baldwin was going to be the backup, we really don't know how he would do in a game situation. We really don't even know how Fields will do either, but Ryan must think he's the better of the two, so time will tell.
Urban’s first season going undefeated Kenny G stepped in to lead a comeback over Purdue after Braxton got hurt. Had a couple of starts the next year too I believe. National championship season, Cardale stepped in against ttun and then started the next three games to win it. Then in JT’s last season Haskins stepped in and won The Game against ttun which is why everyone was so confident going into last season. So in 4 of the past 6 seasons our backup has either started or stepped into games and needed to perform in order to win. And in all of those situations the starter was a running QB and that is something we have coming into this season. An athletic and talented guy that will undoubtedly run the ball more than a guy like Haskins and as of now I don’t have much confidence in any of the guys that would have to step in for him
Maybe scrap the zone read until a reliable backup is found / developed. Not mant QB's are as durable as JT Barrett
yes the sky is falling,,,yikes..OSU pays millions to their coaches but as a fan i don't trust they'll figure this out ...oh me oh my what shall we do but worry worry worry ...help help !!
If we have to win another National Title on a backup QB so be it.
Go for 2, because you can't go for 3
Get the fuck over it already....
Justin Fields is our QB #1. He was from the exact moment he enrolled at tOSU. If any body thinks that an actual QB battle was taking place, you must be incredibly ignorant.
This year it's Fields #1 or bust !!
This dudes about to destroy the B1G, I can see a Cam Newton type of player in Justin Fields with more speed.
Top of the food chain
Fields is going to be great, but this team is pretty much f'ed if he gets hurt. Then again, didn't we say the team was f'ed in 2014 when Braxton got hurt in camp?
Then again, that team had depth at QB, obviously...JT and Cardale ready to go in and keep it rolling. I'm not banking on Chugs playing as well as either of those guys did in 2014. Mark me down as "Pretty Worried".
Can we just have Fields wrapped in bubblewrap for the remainder of the offseason? Or would that be an NCAA violation?
Class of 2010.
If you really think about it, the season expectations are met or shattered with the starter going down no matter what. Yes they need another scholarship QB to fill the depth chart, but if we are all being honest here, expectations are more or less win the conference and compete for a national championship (or at least be in the hunt of doing so) every year. Outside of a very rare situation (2014), that's usually what happens for every team. The only difference here is that a QB1 injury for a team that has a normal #2, the goal then just becomes to compete for your conference championship instead of a national championship, and try to get a decent bowl game and win it when the #2 comes in. The big thing with OSU (assuming they go into the season as-is with no additions...remember it's April) is going to be that an injury lowers those goals to just beating Michigan and making a somewhat decent bowl game. We will see how it plays out, but in most situations if you have your QB1 go down mid-year, you're not going to a national championship. This is the norm. We also have to keep in mind that OSU was the first one to go head first into the new transfer portal, so it's natural we are in this situation first. This is going to become more and more common.
Not every QB injury puts a guy out for the season. Maybe we need someone just to fill in for a half or a game or two. Someone competent could maybe help us win those games and the starter comes back to finish the season.
True, I was thinking more along the lines of if there is a major injury then who your next option might be. So yes if it's for a short time, then we are in trouble unless Chugnov turns out to be more than everyone thinks. But again, still April and I wouldn't be surprised if some guys that have considered entering the portal might make the jump at the chance to be a clear cut #2 at OSU and throw their name in the ring.
It really doesn't even matter. If Fields were to go down, I wouldn't have had much faith in either Baldwin or Martell. Maybe Baldwin could win some games but he wasn't going to win some of the bigger playoff type games. Since Baldwin can't really be a part of the running game, you're looking at an offense that's like ours last year except an even worse passing game and still the same lack of a running game.
It's always been Fields or nothing and luckily we still have Fields.
If Fields gets injured we should run the wishbone triple threat option.
A little bit...
