I truly wish Baldwin good luck. I trust Fields and Day. I keep going back to a break down in the offensive scheme due to just not having a lot of snaps, but Fields can do like Pryor, and has Dobbins with the zone read.

It was Fields’ team when he transferred. Day himself said this was not the year projected for Baldwin. Hopefully there’s some more details but not the brightest move by Baldwin, and definitely not good for the Buckeyes. Like I said in the other write up, gotta roll w the transfers.

All I can say is if he leaves, he’d better not be immediately eligible somewhere else. If the NCAA supports undergrads leaving because they weren’t named the starter after spring practice and lets them become immediately eligible to play at another school in the fall, top teams are going to see an exodus of talented but impatient players.

Maybe he is making it a point, and planting the “moving closer to home so I can be near my family” seed now, that way when he tries to gain immediate eligibility, the NCAA will be not so harsh when deciding if they will grant his waiver... good luck Matthew, wish you all the best in your future... now Justin can concentrate on being the guy, not have to worry about throwing a incomplete pass and getting replaced (ala 2015)

LA BUCK's picture

Why shouldn't Baldwin be deemed eligible immediately?

Talented players (I don't care who...linemen, LBs, WRs, DBs, etc., and particularly QBs) always look at the roster and assess what their chances are for playing time before committing to a program. Baldwin did this too. But then a whole new dynamic presented itself when Day decided to take Fields, and the calculus changed entirely for Baldwin. Coach Day took a gamble that Baldwin and Martel would be perfectly fine with the transfer-in. Well, his gamble failed.

And so given these circumstances, why should the NCAA prevent Baldwin from having immediate eligibility elsewhere? If you've ever participated in athletics you must know the passion there is to just get on the field and play. These kids aren't paid second and third string QB professionals who are ok with taking the cash and being kept around as a spare tire. They're kids that just want to play ball. And you want to prevent a decently skillful amateur athlete to be penalized because you're upset he might screw up the college football season for you, should the foregone QB starter go down? Baldwin has every right to transfer and to play immediately, if he is suitably capable. It worked out quite well for Burrow.

BTW...if I remember correctly Day saw something in Baldwin and pursued him. He convinced Meyer to extend Baldwin an offer (again if I recall). So if the QB Whisperer is as talented a coach as everyone likes to say he is, then Baldwin must be a sufficiently talented QB to play at Ohio State. Based on what I saw in the Spring Game, the kid has talent. And he showed he has more 'legs' than Haskins, when he bailed-out a time or two. Baldwin was smart not to announce a transfer before the Spring Game. The Spring Game was his transfer tryout and I'd say he passed inspection. Up until Fields entered the equation, OSU's QB was going to either be Baldwin or Martell.

Day must live with his decision, like Swinney did his. Swinney was fortunate Lawrence made it through the season without injury. Meyer similarly was fortunate Haskins made it through. If Fields turns out to live up to his billing as the second best QB in his class, then the only concern is keeping him healthy. Perhaps that means taking him out of games when the result is pretty much determined, instead of what Meyer did in keeping the starter on the field for the duration, which prevented the backups from getting reps. If something unfortunate happens with Fields before or during the season, well it's just part of the calculated gamble that Day made. And if Fields turns out not to be capable live up to billing, then it will be an unfortunate decision which will reverberate for a couple of years.

Lastly, none of us know the real reason why Baldwin is transferring, nor when he made the decision. But assuming it's a result of Fields having a pretty terrible outing (save for one play, it would have been really bad) and yet it still was crystal clear he was still in the driver's seat (and Day's competition was a ruse like Meyer's QB competition ruse which he hoped would keep Burrow on board until a transfer wasn't an option), it was rather injudicious for Day to make his comments about Baldwin being a team player and a die-hard Buckeye, and the type of person who wouldn't be bothered if relegated to second string. If it wasn't clear to Baldwin before Day's comments what the outcome would be, it was absolutely clear after them.

Things turn out best for people who make the best out of the way things turn out. - Woody Hayes

Fields better get a lot better in a hurry. Right now he is awful. I know people are saying that this has nothing to do with the competition, and everything to do with being homesick, but that is BS. Kids don’t start to get homesick two years into college. This is about the overwhelming (and obvious) sense that Fields is being handed the starting job without having to earn it. It sucks to lose Baldwin, but I don’t blame him if he feels that he will lose out even if he is the superior QB. It seems to be that his fate is already sealed, and I would do the same. He didn’t come here to sit on the bench while the coach recruits transfers to slot in ahead of him. He wants to play, and he should have an outstanding college career somewhere.

I’m also not saying that Fields won’t or can’t improve, or that he won’t be better in the Fall. Yes, time and experience... But right now Fields looks like shit as a passer, even against our infamous and unsettled defense, and everyone is still falling all over themselves saying he will be the starter in spite of it all. Baldwin didn’t look like Dwayne, but he was a hell of a lot better in the spring game, and knows the offense, and yet he gets no respect. It would have been nice to have someone win the job.

HS
RMLogic's picture

This is nonsense. Obviously to the coaches Fields earned the starting job. It is obvious to everyone he is by far the more skilled QB. Baldwin is a version of Boeckman at best. Adequate. Fields has elite potential with far superior mobility, stronger arm and far superior athletic talent. Its not even close who is better.

Just like last year when fools moaned about Joe Burrow being close to Haskins- the coaches knew and that was obvious to smart football observers.

HS
ELJTSA76's picture

So, According to you, Baldwin = Boekman.  Also, 4-12  shows vastly superior skill to 24-36 (I am going from memory, but it’s close enough)...?

The only thing about Fields that is obviously superior is his HS star rating, and his running ability. As I said, I know he will get somewhat better with time and experience, but nobody knows if he will ever be an accurate college QB. Right now Fields is a poor man’s Braxton Miller, who was basically just an athlete as a freshman. Fields may be great one day, but he is not anywhere near ready for a starting college job right now. Right now, Baldwin is the better QB objectively.  But that isn’t the argument here. It is that despite being a better QB right now, Baldwin barely received lip service about winning the competition. Maybe it would have been smarter to have a real competition? Maybe it would have (eventually) been smarter to roll with Baldwin at the top of the depth chart now, and make Fields take the job away from him?

HS
krakatoa64's picture

It was a damn spring game lol. Baldwin had the turnovers and had one REALLY bad interception. Fields flashed his athleticism but was neutered by the rules of the spring game. Timing with the receivers will come but I doubt KJ plays as badly in the fall as he did in the spring game (two drops).

HS
Lawver_5's picture

Do people honestly think that Ryan Day just got the biggest job of his life and would PURPOSELY trot out a starting QB that wasn't the best on the roster? That a coach with NFL experience and just turned Dwayne into a 1st rounder would sit Baldwin knowing he was better? That the staff has seen 3 months worth of Justin Fields and are just saying "screw it, he was a 5 star in high school, he's the starter"? I know we all want to have knee jerk reactions, but come on. The staff and players have always had good things to say about Baldwin and I was looking forward to him being the starter at some point, but if Fields came in and basically won the job in 3 months I think that speaks to the talent he has. Everyone in here criticizing the decision is acting like they sat in on every single practice when in reality they have seen a single non-contact scrimmage. I think the biggest concern here is depth if Fields goes down

HS
Trebor40's picture

The issue, though not popular - is not if Fields is more talented it is that Baldwin must feel like he was recruited over and passed by, what is the likelihood he sticks around and someone else does the same thing to him. He trusted Day and then Day once again did the NFL thing and went after the man who has come to take your job NOT split carries or receptions - just take ALL of them! It is now playoffs or bust!

Let me guess... you wanted burrow last year right? I mean statistically, joe had a better spring game then Dwayne... if you honestly think Baldwin is better then Fields that is your opinion and I’m not gonna dog you for it, I’m just going to disagree with you... yes Baldwin knows the playbook, yes he has a year up on Justin in tOSU culture and a year more under coach days watch... Justin is a better athlete, can make plays happen when they break down, he has a stronger arm (don’t even state that pass to victor was underthrown when we all know fields can throw the ball a fricking mile flat footed where the rest of the QB staff has to crow hop to get it over 40 yards)... remember, he has only been here 3 Fn months... he is going to need time to work on his accuracy with his receivers and learn more of the playbook, other then that IN MY OPINION, I think Fields was the starter from the day he showed up on campus

Hey my fellow commentator and your up-voting friends I am growing tired of the non-emphatic reasoning with Joe Burrows and Dwayne Haskins! When they had the same talent facing the SAME defense Joe beat Dwayne.

Now how many O-Linemen and WR's are going pro for LSU from last season? How many for tOSU?

You and I have no idea whether Joe would have performed any better or worse with the WR and coaching/play calling that Haskins had!?

I don't see how this differs from Fields leaving Georgia and transferring to OSU.  I don't remember all the indignation and predictions of the imminent collapse of society when Justin chose to join the Buckeyes.  It is amazing how many fans who wouldn't hesitate to leave their current job for a better opportunity think college football players should abandon their desire to actually play college football and maybe make it to the NFL just to provide roster depth for their favorite team.  That reeks of entitlement.

I agree we have a precarious quarterback situation, but it has actually been even more precarious in the past. Remember that we had TWO full seasons with Joe Bauserman as Terrelle Pryor's primary backup in 2009 and 2010. No one realized at the time just how scary that was, because people assumed Bauserman could play until he had to play and we found out we were wrong.

So odds are we're going to be fine. And even in a worst case scenario ... it's just one season.

it would of been nice to have Baldwin around to bridge the gap between fields and miller... fields starts the next two years, Miller redshirts his freshman year (2020) backs up Baldwin in 2021 then dominates 22’ and 23’... hopefully the O line can figure it out so they keep fields upright, but I think we will be ok as long as Justin can stay healthy

As for Fields this could be a blessing in disguise for him.  Like Haskins last year, he will get all the first team reps which should speed his development under Day's system.  I have faith that Day will modify his offense where Fields can be successful.

I know this was back in HS but I was impressed with Fields' Elite 11 video where he outplayed Trevor Lawrence.  It shows you what he's capable of doing.  Again, I have faith in Ryan Day's ability to develop QB's.  Go Bucks!!!

It's Drake's fault.  That weasly spineless wuss refused to defend Urban and all of that crap together combined to force Urban's health issues back to the surface in a big way.  Without Drake's stabbing Urban in the chest (metaphorically), we still have Urban for another year probably.

I have absolutely nothing against Day and am excited to see "Ruthless Ryan" pound the B1G into submission, but in my view this all falls under the category of "consequences" of Drake's piss poor leadership.

Baldwin stayed in his release that he is not a footballer. Seems everyone posting here didn’t read that. With his injury keeping him off the field the past year and a half, he really doesn’t have much to wave in front of other schools to nab a scholarship from them. I truly believe he finally got on the field and realized he doesn’t want to play football at this level and will instead go to school closer to his family. Seems honesty to me and took humility to state it.

Question 2? Why are doing the exact opposite of what we did last year?

Imho, Pryor was a better passer than Fields! Fields sat the bench at Georgia because he couldn’t hit a bull in the ass. Guess what! It’s a year later Fields still couldn’t hit a bull in the ass! I see on this site how Fields is the most highly ranked player to ever enroll at Ohio State, big freaking deal, the rankings were wrong. You don’t fix Fields passing flaws in 3.5 months!
