BREAKING: Ohio State coach Ryan Day confirms to @LettermenRow that Matthew Baldwin has requested to enter the transfer portal. Major development for the Buckeyes at quarterback. https://t.co/TGglBc70zP

Confirmed by LR. That is baaaaaaaaad news.
Welp... that ain't good.
Better keep that no contact jersey on Fields all the way through January.
And on fourth and one... would you believe?
Welp. So much for the competition at QB. Need to find a back up ASAP.
Time to shine Fields
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
never was a competition
EXACTLY. You notice QB competitions don’t happen often at blue blood programs? Urban Meyer’s philosophies are gone. Fields was gonna start the moment he arrived. It would have taken a disastrous spring/summer/fall for him not to start.
"Go out there, make plays, they'll remember your name forever. FOREVER!" - J.T. Barrett
We're already thin at the QB position. This just makes it thinner. Not good.
Hopefully he changes his mind and comes back
That's a Buckeye touchdown!
Well, Hell. I sure don’t want to be a landing spot for free agents. I’d much rather build from within.
The man gushed in previous articles about his love for Ohio State and wanting to be here... what changed
Said it be because it sounded good
So who's the backup? I know the depth chart will say Chug, but any of the RBs/WRs capable or have experience in running some version of a Wildcat?
Whoever they bring in.
Chug is the backup if Baldwin leaves. He is limited but has starting experience for a major CFB program. I don't think there is any position player who would be a better option.
I’m sure they would figure out a way to win most games running a ton
Better find another QB Day. Immediately
Wow, just wow! Whether we fans like it or not, each kid is entitled to do what he thinks is best for his career, just as the programs do!
Exactly. OSU was looking out for their best interest in bringing Fields, and both Martell & Baldwin are looking out for their own. I'm not sure I like this new world of transfers, but I understand it.

This timing is wildly fishy. AFTER the spring game?
I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but it seems like Baldwin was given some news of pecking order and made a decision based on that. I refuse to believe that if he 100% had a fair shot he would just forget the months of winter and spring training and decide to leave.
when Fields transferred there it was over. I know people want to like Baldwin. The fact of the matter talent wise he aint remotely close to the talent that Fields.
I was thinking the same thing. I think Day probably let him know that Fields was the starter heading into the summer/fall. Complete speculation obviously, but Day seems like a guy that doesn't beat around the bush.
What we have currently available is what we have available.
Without a doubt 2020 is going to have 2 quarterbacks in the class. Miller has a chance to be starting as a redshirt freshman
Better take 4 just in case. Amirite?
Well, this is terrifying
Kids have no heart nowadays.
“SWING!....... SWING!!........ SWING!!!!!!!”
That’s cause they think with their head.
I assume this comment also applies to Justin Fields.
Understandable as he'd at least be 2 years away from starting and then would have to compete with Miller who would have a full season in the program. Only thing that worries me is depth now esp with Fields running style. He's looking to punish the defenders, so he'll have to change that approach and protect himself more.
He's obviously not Kyler Murray, but I think Fields can learn a lot from how Murray completely avoids contact.
In an earlier topic prior to spring practice I alluded in one of my posts that Baldwin might look to leave if he sees no playing time while being a back up. Worse case scenario now for Bucks to lose Martel and possibly Baldwin.
Not a guarantee he will return but perhaps Day has told him if he wants to return he will accept him back.
Question is how do you accept a player back on the team when he is looking to leave.
How do players respond to a leadership role like the QB who explores laving the Brotherhood and then let him back on the team because his transfer options weren't what he wanted.
Tough time ahead.
If Urban Meyer were coach would we be seeing one and now maybe two QB's leave under his leadership.
Buckeye since 1952.
Lot of quarterbacks decommitted. Joe burrow left.
So probably. This isn’t an osu or even just a CFB thing. It’s all college sports ppl wanna play
This is why you need to get a qb every year. Never know what’s going to happen.
Would have guessed this would be more of a Michigan problem to be honest. Surprised mccaffrey and peters haven’t transferred with how harbaugh takes grad transfer qbs.
Lifetime vs. UM: L 8-1, C 7-0, T 4-0
Not to be alarmist but just stating the obvious - unless there is a capable transfer available, if Fields goes down the Buckeyes are not going to win anything next season. Just terrible timing, there is no way to spin it. Hopefully Day can change his mind.
Undecided QBs in the portal:
Keondre Wudtee (OKST) - not OSU caliber (but relationship with Yurcich?)
Deondre Francois (FSU) - best available but tossed from FSU for possible abuse of GF. Likely not an option.
Kasim Hill (MD) - talented but erratic throwing the ball last season
Cade Weldon (Miami) - not OSU caliber
Connor Neville (WSU) - 3* recruit, no college stats
Tommy Stevens (PSU) - Talented runner, average at best thrower. Already had fallen behind Sean Clifford in PSU competition.
Matt Fink (USC) - Former 3* recruit, never moved out of backup role at USC
The options here aren't great when we are talking about Tommy Stevens or Kasim Hill as the best available options. Hill would need a waiver to play right away but Stevens possibly could be a grad transfer. Not certain on that but seems possible.
Reason for transfer: wants to be closer to home. Not playing time or being a back up.
Not likely to change his mind unless somebody talks him out of it.
Anyone think Dwan Mathis is kicking himself, not sure what the options are out there but we need a quarterback in a bad way and hopefully bring in two in the 2020 class, and hopefully we don’t lose Miller over taking another one.
Looks to me like he saw the writing on the wall even though Fields wasn't named starter... Bad news is that Chugs didn't look great so we will have a major job to do to get the entire qb room prepared more than ever.
"I don't apologize for anything. When I make a mistake, I take the blame and go on from there." - Woody Hayes
Go from the 2 best QB's in OSU history at least statistically to one QB and a Grad transfer in a matter of 3 months!
Put that in your pipe and smoke it for a while.
Everybody talks about who to get to transfer in, well a potential transfer is going to look @ things and see them (most likely) the very SAME way that Baldwin did, and say thanks but no thanks!
Man, I wonder how those Tathan haters are feeling right about now.. OSU just traded Tate and Baldwin for Fields
Not really. If Tate was here and in the lead for the starting job Baldwin would presumably do the same thing. If Baldwin won the starting job we already know what Tate would do. Rather have Fields than Tate in either scenario.
I dont think Tate wouldve left had Baldwin beat him out. He left for same reason Baldwin is, Day brought in a new toy and handed him the keys. There was never a competition at hand here
But it was said there’s a QB competition!
Next man up-
Enjoying daily the 62-39 ttun beatdown.
It's time to panic about a qb that probably wasn't never going to get an opportunity to play is transferring
Ryan day the goat....and yes I pee on ttun all the time
Yes it is, name the back up... Chug, half the people on here cant even spell his full name
