damn. that was a fun read.

Especially like the reason for not transferring. Definitely can respect that. Don't see that too often nowadays (Not a backhanded comment at any recent Buckeyes)

Damn, who is cutting the onions in here?

“But at the end of the day, I couldn't leave this place. I wanted to graduate from here so bad. I wanted sort of a farewell tour my senior year. I wanted to end at Ohio State. Especially with this coaching staff, I owed them a lot. I wanted to contribute on the court, too, which I kind of had a chance to in some meaningful times. I knew that sitting out I would lose out on opportunities to really play for my dream school in a meaningful capacity. But also, I couldn't ever, if there was any possibility of playing against Ohio State, I couldn't do that.”

This was a great article/interview. Excited for the future of OSU basketball.

Lot of good stuff in this article, but I have to say my favorite part was this:

How bad would Mark Titus beat you in a game of 1-on-1? - Bucknut1994

JL: “I think Titus is really washed up, and I don't think it would be very close. In his prime, I bet it would be a little bit of a closer game, but I still would beat him. But right now, I mean, I was with him in Minneapolis at the Final Four, and he just doesn't stand a chance.”

It literally made me L out L, which was weird because I'm at work on a holiday weekend and the majority of my co-workers are bitter and joyless about being at work on a holiday weekend and no less than 3 of them have asked my why in the hell I'm so happy to be here on a holiday weekend...so thanks for that, I guess.

Unless your company is in very dire straits, or about to launch a new product next week, you may want to look for another employer, someone who values work-life balance. Workers need time off to be creative and perform at their best. And this is a BIG holiday weekend for lots of folks.

Thanks for the feedback, Ibuck. I may have some bitter co-workers, but I honestly couldn't be happier. I have to work long hours (14-16 hr shifts) and 2 weekends per month, but the work-life balance is awesome because it translates to 180 days off/year without even using PTO. By contrast, my last employer had me traveling out of state 40 weeks/year, which is what brought me here in the first place.

That is a young man that will go far in life, no matter what career path he takes. He has his priorities lined up right, and should be an inspiration to the rest of his generation.

Best of luck, Joey, wherever you life leads you.

Great to hear how positive he is about the program going forward. Reinforces what we all think about the players and coaches these past two years.

We need like a hall of fame for backups. Kenny G, Titus, Joey, bausermans chart. Would be epic.

In a day where so many transfer because they cannot break the starting five it is refreshing to see Joey honor his original commitment to OSU, demonstrate a love for his school and a loyalty to his teammates.  Thanks again Joey for all you have done and will continue to do for OSU.  What a great character guy!

What a fun interview, thanks for doing this.  It's always fun to hear how excited players are at becoming fans after they graduate. I'm going to guess that Joey outright lied in one answer - he's got to be the funniest guy on the team, but he didn't want to give that answer, but I must say Duane does have that impish look about him, so that's not too surprising to me.

I also was tickled by the answer about the coaches - Matta wanted to be calm but with the team the last 2 years he couldn't be. Kinda like all the rest of us!

Finally, congratulations to Joey and all the 10k+ who are graduating in a couple weeks. The hard part is over and now the hard work begins! You may walk away from daily life on campus, but you will always be a Buckeye!

I rode the pine in my younger years for basketball too.  Difference is I sucked but hated the pine. Didn’t embrace my role. Good for Joey for being a true teammate. He earned his leadership.

I was always a "practice player" as well and usually only saw the floor when my team had a significant lead, but I loved being part of the teams I was on. And practices for me were fun. I got to harass the starters, I could foul almost as much as I wanted and never get whistled. My shooting was terrible (except FTs I was really good at the line - we all were because we had to run suicides when anyone missed in practice) but my defense was pretty good. Plus you know your teammates tendencies so you are in a better position to take away their dominant moves, forcing them to develop a more rounded game. Even though "role players" aren't anywhere near as good as the opponents your starters will face, you have different skills and talents that help make even the best players just that much better.

Nice story Bucksfan. Good/Great teams need players like you. I was young and dumb. More dumb unfortunately. The older I got the worse I got at basketball. Found I was better at football until I realized baseball was truly my calling.

outstanding article!

also hilarious to me...if you look at the way the 3 photos are positioned at the top of the homepage, it looks like Joey's sister/girlfriend has these massive shoulders and arms..

Exactly - I saw the same thing and was about to comment on it.  I could picture her asking Joey -" hey big bro - do you even lift? " Ha!

Want to get #14 jersey. A great Buckeye doesn’t have to be an All-American to make an impact. You were much appreciated Joey Lane.

Someone who is a stats person, help me out please.

Who had more Trillion games, Titus or Lane?

In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...

HS
ibuck's picture

Gotta be Titus because Joey would launch shots—which would alter a stat line, whereas Titus, IIRC, seemed content to accumulate no other stats (shots, rebounds, steals, fouls, etc).

This past season, Lane shot 4/8 FG's and 3/6 treys, collected 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 personal fouls, 2 steals, etc

No wonder college bb has a transfer problem. If a 4 year walkon is given a schollie all 4 years to his fave school and considers transfering, there's no way schools can keep offered kids from transfering. That's eye opening.

He did not have a scholarship his first year at osu. He was awarded a scholarship before his 2nd year at osu and I believe Holtmann renewed it for his 3rd and 4th seasons.

Also, 4 of the 5 teammates in his class left after the first year. And the 5th teammate got kicked off the team the next season and the coach that asked him to play for the Buckeyes got fired. And a fellow walk-on teammate (Jimbo Jent) decided to stop playing basketball.

It's not like Joey had a rosy situation his first 2 years at osu.

I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.
