The draft can’t get here soon enough. I think the buckeyes will, once again, be well represented. I think three get their name called on the first night, 4 get their name called on Friday. And probably 2-4 more on day three.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

RER, agree!  There will be more Buckeyes in the NFL next year!!  And some with a very realistic chance to be stars there too!!!

You are right!  It will be another banner night for OSU football and its recruiting and player development chops.  And for Paul Finebaum and the many Meyer haters in the media, another chance to wag a finger and remind the world about the talent Urban Meyer wasted while in his final 3-4 years at Ohio State.   The sad and very real thing is, they won't be totally wrong.

HS
IGotAWoody's picture

Anything Finebaum says about Meyer or OSU is totally wrong. And that's because of his bias and his complete lack of first-hand knowledge of the program.

With the way the Browns offseason has gone, its a really weird feeling not being as interested in the draft as years past. I'm still interested in watching where all the Buckeyes go, but my team doesn't even have a first round pick this year. Its strange. This used to be our Super Bowl. Having said that, I actually kinda hope Haskins drops out of the top ten but not to Cincinnati. First of all, I don't want him in the division; and second, I don't want to have to root against him twice a year. Miami would be a nice spot for him. And The Giants have a pick in the 10-20 range as well so maybe they don't take him with their first pick but they very well could with their second if he's still on the board.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Miami would be a terrible spot for Haskins. They are rebuilding from the ground up atm so he'd have next to no talent around him in that offense. Not to mention they are a poorly run organization from the top down and have done a horrible job of holding onto their draft capital behind their rookie deals in recent years. The only appeal Miami offers is the location.

11 Strong.

Just wait until we read about some first-time bettor putting $85k down on the Lightning to get swept in the first round the way the dude in Wisconsin guy won $1.1M betting Tiger would win the Masters. As sports betting becomes legalized across the 50 states, those kinds of crazy stories will become even more common.

Actually had that very same thought last night - the money that someone could (probably did) have made laying down on CBJ to sweep, and also thought of the guy who cashed on Tiger.

The funniest part of that story was the guy claimed he had a financial background and was good with money.... in an article about how he was $25,000 in debt and wagered $85k on a 14-1 bet lmao

IGotAWoody's picture

FWIW, 25k in debt is a pretty small debt load. That's way below the average.

But yeah, throwing down $85k on a golf bet, that's not exactly sound money management.

HS

Oh for sure, but my point was it's not like he had a spare $85K to toss around, especially on a bet that hypothetically only wins one in every 14 times. He was already in debt

IGotAWoody's picture

Well, he musta had a strong gut feeling. For every guy that makes a bet like this and wins, there are thousands who just end up losing a lot of cash that they can't afford to lose.

Where there's smoke, there's fire. All these sports writers are predicting a slide, and he's not attending the draft.

This doesn't surprise me given his lack of experience and poor combine testing results. Also, while he did some really impressive stuff this year, there are a lot of holes to pick in his play. Basically, outside of a big arm and good (but not great) accuracy, what does he bring to the table?

As I predicted, he hurt himself by not staying in school.

HS
PhillyNut's picture

Too early to say he hurt himself. He came through this year with no injuries. What if next year he got seriously hurt? Next year he would also likely be going up against Tua, Hurts, and others that, if he did not have as good of season as this past year may have seen him fall out of the first round whereas he is still likely to go in the top half of the first round. There is nothing certain as to what good or bad would have happened next year anymore than what will happen this year.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

HS
Blackcoffee's picture

The one truth, in a dog eat dog world, above all is the cream always rises to the top. Whether he is not drafted high or not, Haskins will shine.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

Easy to say he hurt himself when he could’ve suffered a devastating career-ending injury had he stayed in school. Dwayne will be fine. Russell Wilson was a third round pick and is now the highest paid player in the NFL, passing Aaron Rodgers, who slipped to 24th overall after many thought he would be drafted first. Think of all the can’t-miss busts who were drafted early by terrible teams.

HS
Nutinpa's picture

Maybe.  But even though it was just a "Spring scrimmage", I saw enough this past Saturday to realize how much and how badly Haskins is already missed from this team for next season -- his holes and all.  And lastly, for those seeing Haskins slide, I only need to point to Mitch Trubisky to see a kid with only 1 year of cf starter experience, who with good NFL coaching, still thrives.

HS
NavyBuckeye91's picture

Trubisky is an outlier. In general, age and average games started per season are good indicators or NFL success.

and poor combine testing results

Lol, did you watch him at the combine?  He was easily the best QB there.  Yep, no 4.5 40 time but c'mon dude, he only shined at the combine.  If he does slide, his lack of experience could have something to do with it.  Smoke screens very well may be real, however, they may not also.

I hope he goes to a team that is the right fit for him.

God > Family > Buckeyes football

HS
AZ Buckeye13's picture

Poor combine testing? The 40 yard dash is the only "poor" testing result he had that I read about. Arm talent (strength) can't be taught, football knowledge (reading coverages, etc.) are difficult to teach, and the ability to absorb that knowledge quickly. Kyler Murray didn't even test at the combine so what should that tell us? Haskins hopefully will go to a team that will sit him in year one and let him learn. The Cardinals made a huge mistake playing Rosen last year when Glennon could have finished the year for them. If they draft Murray (without trading down) they will continue to spiral downward. Kingsbury fell in love with Murray when he was a high school recruit and we both know that there is a huge difference between high school football and NFL football. The only thing that Murray has on Haskins is foot speed and we really don't know how fast Murray is with his refusal to run the 40 yard dash either at the NFL combine or Oklahoma's Pro Day. One thing that I do know, there will be defensive linemen that can run him down in the NFL. Any QB who is taken in the draft and tossed directly in the starting lineup will struggle mightily.

HS
CowCat's picture

outside of a big arm and good (but not great) accuracy,

I beg to differ. I've been attending games since 1975 and I've never seen accuracy and delivery like Haskins. There's no wind-up. He's just throwing darts on the numbers.

HS
Kevin Harrish's picture

I don't buy at all that he hurt himself by not staying in school. He's still going to be a top-15 pick (and could still potentially be higher) as probably the third or fourth quarterback taken. Next year he'd be in the same class as Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert, which would put him as at best the No. 3 quarterback in the class right off the bat with other players (Jake Fromm, Jacob Eason) who could emerge as well. It made, and still makes all the sense in the world for him to come out this class.

Also, I think it's an extreme stretch to say he had a poor combine performance. By all accounts, he's done great in his pre-draft process.

Extramedium's picture

The obsession with being a high draft pick over a long and successful career has never made any sense to me. I'd much rather see him drop in the draft and go to a decent team than be a top 5 pick and get destroyed.

The entire reason Tom Brady is still getting an NFL paycheck and married to a Brazilian supermodel rather than selling used cars in Detroit is because he was picked late round and went to New England.

Such as on the dubcast where they spend 20mins just talking about it.
