Maybe it was more than just his attitude behind the reasons Day didn't fight to keep him around.
Pretty much knew he wasn't going to win the job down there. Given yesterday's performances, he would have had a better chance had he stayed. Still probably would have been second string here, but better than 3rd string down there.
You're assuming way too much over a couple of pointless scrimmages
read the article. He is 3rd on their depth chart. That is more than a couple of scrimmages.
The ole arbitrary depth chart. Those are never used for motivation.
So you're saying Baldwin should start here based on Saturday?
"Come on, you sons of b!tches! Do you want to live forever?" -- Dan Daly, WWI
Sounds like that is what he is trying to say... not that it is correct or anything.
Living the life! Go Buckeyes! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I always thought it was odd Tate didn't stick around and fight for the job at OSU. The situation at Miami isn't noticeably better. It seemed quickly forgotten that Jarren Williams was recruited hard at the signing day finish by OSU, Bama, and Auburn. He was arguably the hottest QB prospect at the end of that cycle not named Lawrence or Fields. His recruitment was a huge win for Miami.
N'Kosi Perry is another young QB and former top 200 recruit who has flashed talent and isn't someone to disregard. At least at OSU Tate had the advantage of being the veteran QB in Day's system. Not saying I think he would have won the Buckeye job but the idea that he was going to waltz in and take the Miami job never seemed realistic to me either.
It's nothing more than rumor but I have heard on multiple occasions that he was told to find other options as Ohio St had no place for him with the direction they were going. Like I said it's just rumor, I can't confirm it.
Noon games suck
That would not surprise me. Or at least that he was told the staff thought he was #3 on the depth chart moving forward and might only be featured in certain packages, if ever. Just not sure Miami was the right destination for him.
Miami was an awful decision, not sure there is a tougher battle w/o there being an established starter.
L'ville and WVU were much better fits. Ego wouldn't have allowed it, but why not just cut bait and walk into the starting QB spot at his hometown UNLV?
But my bros are all at Da U
I just cant help but feel him going there was not a football decision.
As a student at osu, I’ve got a couple connebcyions w a couple players on the defensive side of the ball. I’m not gonna mention names obviously, but if Fields didn’t transfer here they all genuinely thought Baldwin would beat Martell in any sort of QB competition. That speaks volumes to how good Baldwin has been and how Tate has stagnated

If this is true, it doesn't surprise me
Probably a combination of things. One of those things being that Day probably had an honest conversation with him about the offense he wants to run at Ohio State Tate doesn't quite fit that. I think Tate will wind up being a pretty good player somewhere...I think he would've been a pretty good player here as well...but I think he's going to need to be in a run-heavy option attack for that to be the case.
be in a run-heavy option attack
Army doesn't seem to be a fit.
I'm not talking about wishbone triple option. Ohio State used to be a run-heavy spread power-option attack as well when a guy named Braxton Miller was here (and to an extent a lot of what we ran with JT as well). That's what Tate ran in HS as well. I think he would've fit very well in Urban Meyer's Tim Tebow/Braxton Miller offense.
Granted, he's not listed 3rd on our depth chart, but Georgia fans were laughing about Fields' spring game stat line, despite many buckeye fans being excited about what they saw.
Just bringing this up to point out: fans of their team assume it'll definitely get better for their guy while thinking the worst about the guy that left.
I think both martell and fields will end up being really good, maybe even great, college qbs, but no I dont think one scrimmage really matters in the long run.
The Miami fans are destroying Martell right now. Those in attendance say he was worse than his stat line which is the opposite of Fields' performance.
I read last night that the fans were booing him.
Fields of Dreams
Some people in the stadium said the crowd was actually boing someone wearing a FSU jersey and not Tater Salad.
Don't listen to Freddy P. Soft
All seven of them?
I post the above comment, read down one more line and see someone has beat me to it.
12 fans at the Miami game is a small sample size.
Ignorance and sour grapes are laughing. If it were real he would have rushed for 200 yards.
Kid literally bolted out of fear of competing in a system he had a 2 year head start learning, to go to a brand new system and be behind. Made no sense. Kids these days are so spoiled and the parents move mountains to make sure the kids stay happy. Ill put the blame on Tates mother and father. Odds were always greater here to achieve playing time. Bolted because QB#1 wasnt a promised position. Sad.
Kid literally bolted out of fear of competing in a system he had a 2 year head start learning...
You have no idea whether or not what you wrote is even a tiny but true, and if you do then I wish you'd tell the rest of us how it all unfolded. Nobody on here knows why Martell left, and the irony is that while people are denigrating Martell for allegedly bolting because he wasn't promised QB1, they have zero issue with Fields bolting form UGA for the same reason... and yes, I'm well aware of the baseball player incident. If Kirby Smart had told Justin Fields, "You're my guy in 2019, and Fromm has been told as much," then Fields would be at Georgia as I write this, at least in my opinion.
When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's
I agree. Seems truth is often in the eye of the beholder on here. Tate was a buckeye and I hope things work out for him.

Even if you want to ignore the racial tension Fields endured at UGA, the situations are still very different on both the team and player sides. Fromm is a 2 year starter at UGA, Fields seeing he won't get the nod over him is vastly different than Tate seeing he can't beat out Baldwin and/or Fields. 2 players who arrived on campus after he did. Even then, if Tathan doesn't run his mouth all over Social Media before running out of Columbus Buckeye Nation would probably be rooting for him. He should have learned more from Joe Burrow. Like Principal Strickland said in Top Gun, Tathan's ego wrote checks his body can't cash. He's paying the price for that now.
Yup. All that racial tension of a drunk baseball player who acted like an idiot, and then was kicked off the baseball team. So much racial tension, Fields was ok with his little sis attending UGA after the fact.
There is no racial tension in UGA. There is, however, a few idiots who who say really idiotic things when they drink a lot of Bud Light Platinum like every other university. Even ours.
If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.
Ok? Only person who knows for sure is Fields, and if he did or didn’t endure it doesn’t change that he handled his transfer 100 times better than Tathan. That’s why that little guy in Miami is mocked around here.
There is no racial tension in UGA
I'd be interested to know how you possess such vast knowledge.
From someone who grew up in Cle, lived in the Pac NW, lived in Chicago, and resides in the SE now, I can say there is little racial tension down south compared to the Midwest.
Id say Columbus has the least in Ohio, but rust belt cities and Chicago there is racial tension. The west coast isn't too bad, but there is some towards native Americans and Hispanics.
From my experience in Charlotte there is ver little, but sadly I suspect that could change.
Thank you Urban Meyer and Gene Smith
Meh, there are asshats on here who already think Fields isnt that good. It was a meaningless spring practice.
"You're the patron saint of the totally effed" - Hot Tub Time Machine
True, there are asshats on here that think Fields should be handed the heisman after one meaningless spring practice.
I think Fields lights it up and in about 5.5 months you will be eating crow. But, even I know the Heisman race is already down to 2.
9-0 and a chance to go 10-0...
God > Family > Buckeyes football
just bad.....just bad :)
Can't believe no one gave that kid a yellow pages phone book to sit on before they took that picture...
Look it up on Twitter, fan base and media were ruthless
I’m not rooting against him or anything but it’s a situation he put himself in. He tried to make a big twitter war with Fields, talked a big game and then bolted when it became real. There is the right way to handle things and then there’s the way he handled it. It’s not surprising he’s getting crap from both fan bases.
a fan started chanting
One might wonder how a single fan chanting would be noticed, but that was probably one-third of the fans in attendance.

I showed up to post the same, looks like I fell short.
Mod on Mod crime is the worst.
"It's always scotch-thirty on my island."
People expect quarterbacks to throw 100% completions with 7 TDs, or they’re a horrible quarterback. It’s fucking spring PRACTICE.
On the other hand, Tua was 19/23, Hurts was 11/14 and ND's kid was 16/21. Lawrence was only 19/34 at Clemson, which is in-line with Baldwin's pct., but played against starters for the most part and he's earned a Mulligan for them. So, unless our Def. is looking better than Bama, Okie, ND and Clemson's (which I'm not sure I'd believe)...we've apparently got some real polishing to do.
Were they short or long passes? Were any on jet sweeps? Stats don’t tell everything.
We return more starters on D then Bama, Clemsin and ND. Maybe our D is better? And I KNOW the D is better than OU's.
Stats mean almost nothing in a spring game. Most of Baldwin's completions were on short wide-open crossing routes. W/ Fields I was more impressed at the quality of his completions than the quantity.
I wouldn't look too much into this one scrimmage. His learning curve was the same as Fields' and you can see that Justin still has some kinks to iron out. The patience of college football fans neatly matches the patience of college QBs looking for playing time.
This winter before he transferred, I predicted Tate would never be a starter in college. He is going to leave the U, transfer to UNLV and declare early for the draft.
and ball out in Canada.
Justice delayed is justice denied....#FTP
You have to air it out here, he won’t play QB here, move to RB or slot.
How Tate thou aren’t
Tathan would have made a great Edelman1 here.
Lifetime vs. UM: L 8-1, C 7-0, T 4-0
I could be wrong but I doubt Tate ever starts a game at the U. I see him as more of a MAC quarterback, his size is not great, arm strength not great, speed not great at the high d1 level. I hope he improves but I am doubtful, you also have to remember he basically played at a prep school in Nevada, not exactly the hotbed of high school football. It looks like Danny Clark all over to me but at least he was smart enough to never enroll at OSU.
"No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public"---H.l. Mencken
He played the best
Bishop Gorman plays a national schedule against other elite teams.
Hard to read into practice performances, perhaps Tate was trying too hard, receivers running wrong routes or unable to get open, offensive line woes, etc.
After watching the spring game here, im not impressed by what we have currently... Baldwin threw 1 pretty ball, that really shouldve been batted down. Fields "threw" a 98 yard td against a walk on corner...
Tate is gone. What's the point in wishing him ill will? Or enjoying that he's not doing well. Schadenfreude doesn't help anyone...
Onward and upward! Go Buckeyes!
Well, by it's very definition: "Pleasure derived by someone from another person's misfortune", it does provide satisfaction to the person experiencing it. Unfortunately, to experience it, another person also has to have some misfortune.
Think of it this way, a lot of Buckeye's experienced Schadenfreude over a certain 62 - 39 score. You might not appreciate it if you were on the losing side of that score, but the schadenfreude exists, none the less.
The Tate obsession here is reminiscent of a bitter ex ... I think it's time to move on.
11W-move on from what if obsession hottakes-you really are a new poster! Welcome!
I was going to make that same exact comment. Move on... she's not that in to you. There's no need to follow her on facebook and badmouth that dude who's wearing a big gold chain with a grill that she's now hooking up with.
Move on dude, you're better off without her.

I hope Tate does not transfer again. I blame the receivers though.

Whether you like the kid or don’t- whether you agree with his decision or not - no need to pile on the kid - because that is what he is a kid. When I look back when I was his age there are a number of questionable decisions that I made. I was lucky enough to come out of them unscathed.
Let us worry about our team and stand behind the young men who will be playing this fall. No need to tear down anyone else who no longer plays for the Buckeyes!!!!

This. I wish the man no ill-will. He made a decision he felt was in the best interest of his career. That is literally what you go to college for, whether you're a D1 football player or an english major.
I don't want to bash the kid but when you talk as much as he does, you have to perform and back it up. I too thought it was weird the way he left. Anyway, I was impressed with Baldwin and from everything I've read, Fields is ahead of schedule so I can't wait to see how this plays out. ....And the defense already looks like they play faster
I hope Tate does well in Miami, as long as he's not beating Ohio State I hope he tears it up. However, I think the better fit for him would have been WVU, I think if he went there, with their new coach, he would have won the job, especially over "Basic Defense Austin Kendall."
Man, it sucks when Miami's one fan starts on you as a player. I feel for you Tathan.
Proudly dispensing unbridled arrogance since 1983.
Its practice man, it's just practice. My best AI impersonation.
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
Saw some highlights, he struggled in a pretty terrible way. Oh Tathan, we thought we barely knew ye... turns out... we knew ye.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
