Presser Bullets: Greg Mattison, Ryan Day Meet the Media After Ohio State's 11th Practice of the Spring

Said the completion percentages should be a little higher this spring than they were last spring, because they are going against a different style of defense.

keeping things in front on D, i like it. as long as it's more heacock and less withers.

A scuffle broke out at Student Appreciation Day too. Not sure who it was between, but from talking to some of the staff that day, it sounds like the offense and defense are always chippy with each other.

Only 76,000? Why so low?

I believe that they are repairing/resurfacing the concrete in the North part of C deck.

Last year, they did the East part of C deck, and I believe that they are planning on doing the West part (and D deck) next year.

Browning took the first-team reps at middle linebacker today.

I like that we're putting him on the field, but the guy should be playing outside. Let his athleticism shine in a Ryan Shazier type role

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

Garyn Prater looks legit. Expect him to get some playing time in 2020 and beyond.

Go Bucks, Deacs, Panthers, Braves

I believe that he has 3 years of eligibility left, so he will definitely have some time to shine.

Jaylen Harris took a punch from Damon Arnette during a scuffle between the offense and defense in Friday's practice.

I know it sounds crazy, but I love hearing this.  The past few years there just seems to be an edge, fire or whatever you want to call it missing.  Especially on defense.

I want a team that is going to line up and punch you in the mouth, then show some emotion about it.

HS
RBurgundy4's picture

Nope, not crazy, NY. Best thing I read in that entire summary. The D has been flat out soft at times, IMO - the last 2 years, not just 2018. They need some juice and an attitude adjustment. This is good news.

HS

Agree.  And, I'll pile on.  I saw as much softness at times in the Offense as I did with the D.  Much of it we wrote off to confusion with the  scheme, and I am sure some of that is true.  But all in all, our O line was soft -- shit they were beaten up by Minnesota more often than not.

HS

Wish they mentioned the o-line more. Still want to know who the RT is going to be.

I would say it is a competition between Petite-Fere, Bowen, and Alabi.

Mattison knows what's up. Referring to his former employers as "up north" is exactly what any OSU coach should say when Meatchicken is brought up lol.

scUM players are pissed that he called them that! Lol

HS

Well to hell with them. They're playing for the wrong team lol.

Day said he expects there to be scuffles in spring practice, so he's not overly concerned about that

he seems pretty indifferent about this. I guess I didn’t realize this was a thing as I naively thought they were all on the same team so would get along at all times. Makes sense though. You get 100+ uber competitive, intense guys together directly opposing each other and stuff’s bound to happen.

Perhaps Arnette was committing PI again and Harris said something to him about it which led to the punch lol.

Like what I read and like that we have a photo of Coach Mattison with Buckeye gear!

Go Bucks!

I completely forgot Day was a GA at Florida. That explains where his relationship with Meyer first blossomed.

Sorry, Mattison might or might not turn out to be a great DC for the Buckeyes, but it’ll take more than a couple press briefings to wash the “blue” off this guy.

HS
moopdawg's picture

Agree, bro.  It sounds like he's bringing in some new ideas, though.  So that's good.  Time will tell.

HS

Do you think the old man is going to go Benedict Arnold on US?

HS
Ahh Saturday's picture

I’m not questioning his loyalty. I regard Mattis as a professional who has made a professional decision. My reaction is to my associations with him as a UM coach, seeing him on the UM sideline, wearing those hideous UM colors. A player like Boren can shake off the blue more easily. The grind of being a player, putting your body at risk for your brothers, is both purifying and bonding. It makes you a Buckeye. Hard for coaches to demonstrate that same sweat equity. My opinion will probably change, however, if our beloved Buckeyes can throw a shutout or two.

HS
Nutinpa's picture

So.....does that mean Ed Warriner was "All Buckeye" to you when he had his first presser in Ann Arbor?  I mean, if it's true for one, it fits for the other, right?

HS
RunEddieRun1983's picture

Mattison said he wants defensive players to feel like they can ask for a break if they are tired, because he wants them to go hard ("4 to 6, A to B") on every play and believes the next man up can get the job done, as well.

I actually really like this take. I know in the past the idea was don't give up, don't tap out, you stay in until the coaches pull you, but this honestly is a better mindset IMO.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

Good stuff here. Love having good reasons to be optimistic. We are being coached very well by extremely intelligent men.

Very good day of updates.. I've read several times that Garrett Wilson has had a little trouble getting off the line of scrimmage so far. That tells me he may be a year away from being physically ready to make a major impact. I know the offseason is the time to brag about the new toys but dont be surprised if Jaylen Harris is the receiver to win that spot this year over Wilson.

HS
southalabamabuckeye's picture

I find the updates today very encouraging. I expect the defense to be very good next season.

HS

Love hearing about scuffles between the offense and defense!  It means these guys are fired up, going 100%, and being ultra competitive to win their battles!  That speaks volumes to how everybody is adjusting to the new coaches and philosophy.  I think we all know the defensive lapses last few years were due to over complication of schemes.  We need to get back to the Speilman attitude... see ball, crush person carrying ball!

The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced

HS
MaineStrength's picture

I'm sure we'll all get used to it, but it still looks so strange to see Mattison in those colors.

Strength equipment is expensive & guarantees you nothing. A strong will is free & will give you everything you need.
