Braiden McGregor: “Show Me Your Depth Chart. I Want to See That”

Comments Show All Comments

Mortc15's picture

Everyone has the right to do their due diligence and find out as much info as possible, but that those first couple lines rub me the wrong way a little bit.

“Show me your depth chart?” I get wanting to play early, but if you’re secure in your abilities and work ethic, that wouldn’t matter to you. He’s listed almost nothing but top football programs so there’s something they all are interested in. Stop worrying about competition and outwork everyone.

Just my thoughts.

It’s a fair thing to ask... but you might not want to tell the reporters that you are asking it.  It sounds worse as a headline than it actually is in real life.

HS
Mortc15's picture

Yeah, that’s fair. Everyone finds something different the most important, just odd to that kind of a list and asking that question openly.

My first thought was "there has to be a better way of phrasing that". It doesn't seem the intent is bad. He took what Johnson said to heart so it doesn't sound like a play or transfer deal. It sounds more like how well are the 3rd string guys treated and coached.

Negativity is a choice.

HS
OSU725's picture

Honestly his thought process doesn't bother me. He seems like a hard working kid. I think it is a smart approach to see what the reality of your situation is, not what I am sure many coaches are willing to say just  to get you to sign on the dotted line. If they are honest that is one thing, but I think a lot of recruits are fed the bag of roses story. Him talking g to highly rated former recruits that are working their way of the draft chart but are happy and feel like they are at the right place is important. How many kids to you see transfer out, think about transferring out, or get upset with their lack of playing time early on?

HS
osusteveb5875's picture

I mostly agree with you, but as we all know in the world of recruiting, there may be some coaches who are willing to promise more to get a commitment.  It does come off as a bit entitled, but it may have been a follow up to potentially empty promises.

HS
JohnnyKozmo's picture

Maybe he’s asking because schools are guaranteeing early playing time, and he’s not going to simply buy into it without doing his research?

You're too stupid to have a good time. -Dalton

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

And you can bet that OSU is not one of those schools blowing smoke up his butt.  All he needs to do is see our DL rotations and how kids are getting developed under LJ.  He needs to look no further than what’s happening with Zach Harrison right now.  Zach came in with plenty of guys ahead of him and worked hard, and has already made his way into the Rushmen Package as a Freshman.

It was mentioned in yesterday's latest spring practice update. The thinking is that they are looking to go back to where they were two years ago when all four in the Rushmen package were defensive ends.

Stating the obvious may lead some kids on.The best players play thats it. You'll certainly get PT freshman year, how much is up to him. Tathan thought he should of got PT his freshman year and was dissapointed year 1.Almost transferred during his freshman season I believe. These athletes don't commit thinking they won't be playing right away especially the early enrollees. But Tathan was ridiculous in thinking he deserved or earned PT, just my humble opinion. Borderline whether he deserved any PT this year let alone last year.He would have killed someone in the stands last year, lol, with errant passes. Strong arm, bauserman level accuracy at times his freshman year. Will be interesting how he does in Miami. I should actually go to their spring game. Cheerleaders are always there.

MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS

HS
MountainsAwait's picture

Kozmo,

This is how I read into his comments as well. I don’t think he was wanting to see the depth chart in order to guarantee playing time as a freshman, as much as like he said, talking to the players who are third string and not getting playing time and seeing if they still like  the program.  As long as his attitude isn’t cocky, I think the questions are perfectly warranted.  Picking a college is a huge decision.

I agree, while he certainly has the right and even the responsibility to look into programs, this comes across as entitled. If his "Demand" is playing time his frosh year he might want to try Bowling Green.

Sani

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

I didn’t read it that way at all. By talking to the third string guys, he’s recognizing there will be competition and he’ll be starting from the bottom but are they still excited and engaged or frustrated? The problem is no one’s going to be entirely honest with him. It’s not as if some scrub is going to pull him aside and confidentially say, “Yo, young brah, you don’t want to come here.” And even if one did, I’d question his motives because it’s probably not my best interests he’s looking out for.

HS
Grand Lake Celina's picture

I'm with you.  I took it as he wanted to talk to the 3rd string guys to see how they felt about the program.  The guys playing should be happy but are the guys on the sideline still happy about being part of the program?  That is actually a smart way to gauge the culture of a program.  I assume there are a few programs that may treat the 3rd string or less as cannon fodder and there is a chance he might be one of those - so he better make sure he'll be happy in a program even if his playing career doesn't go as hoped.

HS
Bucks19's picture

San - he’s not demanding anything. He’s asking the right questions for him. He wants to play early and wants to see if that’s possible. Nothing wrong with that. It’s actually smart.

HS
Iwouldliketotalktoyou's picture

He is asking for proof that freshmen see playing time. It's not about who is on the depth chart, it is about what class they are in.

Gotta love it.

What he was saying, and he said this in a later quote, is that he wants to know if programs are being honest with him. If he’s being promised early playing time, which is something most recruits want and what many coaches promise, then he wants to know for sure that there’s a path to early playing time. If coaches can’t back up that promise, then walking him through their depth charts would quickly show that. It’s a fair thing ask.

He's unlikely to start as a freshman anywhere he's interested in.  At UM he'd be behind Jr. Hutchinson.  At OSU he'd be behind So. Harrison.  IMHO he's trying to force OSU to be honest about the fact that Harrison is a 5-star the year ahead of him, which means he probably won't project to start until his senior year.  I doubt he's interested in being a backup for 2-3 years (2 if Harrison leaves early) and he wants programs to be honest about things like that.  Ultimately the way I see is he's likely headed toward UM and would need an ideal situation to go anywhere else, but Harrison a year ahead of him will prevent that.

Strength equipment is expensive & guarantees you nothing. A strong will is free & will give you everything you need.

HS
Blue Eyed Buckeye's picture

Not true at all. Great talents go to the NFL after 3 years.

I bet Chase Young is gone after this year. Which would project T. Smith and Harrison to start in 2020
Then let's say Smith is gone to the draft after that year, which would open the door for him to start his redshirt freshman year.

Of course that's if everything goes to plan, injuries or transfers could easily lead to being forced into playing his true freshman year.

HS
MaineStrength's picture

Harrison is one year ahead of McGregor.  Even if Harrison were to head to the NFL after his junior year, McGregor would still have to sit behind him for 2 years and would not project to start until he's in his 3rd year.

Strength equipment is expensive & guarantees you nothing. A strong will is free & will give you everything you need.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

“That’s kind of why I took the visits down south – to go ask the hard questions and figure it out,” McGregor said. “There are a lot of schools in my top-10 that are down south just because I liked what I saw, and they were honest with me. That’s why I’m taking a visit to Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame again – the Midwest schools that have been recruiting me the hardest.”

This is the second time we’ve seen this quote and I still don’t understand it. Is he saying Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame haven’t been honest with him and that’s why he’s going back? To get straight answers?

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Maybe the Southern schools' "honesty" included showing him a glut of freshmen, RS freshmen, and sophomores on their depth charts and he could see it's a bit of a numbers game (guys that don't play end up leaving or unhappy) and he's going back to the Midwest schools to see if it's the same situation.

Your theory is reasonable as well, however.

HS
Taylor Lehman's picture

What I gathered from our conversation is that he was using the Southern schools as a Litmus test for his new template of questions and really liked what he saw. Now he wants to give the Midwestern schools their fair shot too. These aren’t questions he’s asked all of the schools. He wants to bring them to the Midwest too.

HS
Buck68's picture

Litmus test?   [gets into his WayBack machine to remember what that is...is.]  What a useful analogy, Taylor!

Back in the day in junior hi,, we used different pieces from the same litmus paper, to test liquids we put in test tubes.

The paper didn't test for my feelings or sizes or templates of how i constructed my loaded questions....   [not that i ever did that]

The litmus paper reacted to certain chemicals to produce a color based solely on the strength [chemical character] of the substance..

====>This was before 'we' 'progressed' to... "as a" ...how wrong my chemically induced addications  'feel' ...you ARE... honest.

But...

here's another 'kid'... that may be trying to  ask important questions, listen, and compare responses.  Let's encourage him... to keep asking.

I wonder if he also asks himself, 'what comes first'?

HS
Trebor40's picture

I am interested in a kid who is willing to interact with both those who are far ahead in the depth chart - the 'chosen' whom we ALL believe our kids belong with - or those fortunate to be going to a fantastic school on scholarship and might play very little over the first couple of years. I personally believe tOSU with Real Life Wednesdays matches up quite well with any school regarding value added to an already respected education!

They did develop him into a top 10 pick.  I'm sure McGregor would be happy with that.  I'll be curious to see if Gary's lack of sack production is more a function of the role the SDE plays in the system or the skills of the player.  Chase Young's sack stats will be interesting to follow this year.

I love his mindset, wanting to know what the others at his position look like. And I like that he wants to talk to the “scout”level players about the culture.  He mentioned he wanted to talk to 3rd stringers and ask if they still like the place even though they don’t play.  Sounds like maybe he is partially trying to figure out where he will be happiest while he develops.  Maybe that is an old picture, but he doesn’t look physically ready to play at OSU.  Could take a couple years to work his way up and he may realize that. Look at all the physical specimens and incredible athletes who can’t get on the field. He’s aware of that.

HS

The one in the article. Not the one at the top. Not saying he’s a bad looking kid. These schools don’t spend money on official visits for bad lookkng kids.  He may have been a sophomore in the pic for all I know. Just saying he has to know...he’s probably not waking right into Bama, OSU, etc and being in the two deep. Bosas do that. Then get picked in the first few picks of the draft. Unless he’s a guy like a Bosa or JJ Watt...he will need time to develop. That’s all I’m saying.

You’re not necessarily wrong about kids being pumped for answers by reporters, but this was a genuine one-on-one conversation between him and me, and he was very honest. The context is there. My remark was not aimed at reporters because they are doing their jobs but at some of the remarks above. Taylor... IMO you have emphasized a vital distinction between 'hearsay' and 'guru' or 'label' says...

a 1 on 1 personal interview.

IMO a 'reporter' would emphasize 'honest' was his opinion, and describe why he reached that opinion in this interview.  "Very" distracts, devalues, digresses... doesn't it?

IMO you should ask your readers to ask themselves:  on what basis are you responding to my content?  Are you 'seeing what you want to see'... or SEEKING what you rationally think is what i am trying to report?  IMO if a reader were 'seeking'... he would ask you about what he is seeking.

For me, Trapt, you have just illustrated that i cannot be 'humble' on my own... only receive a partial sense of fading humility with the help of others - intended or not - with a Helping Hand.

The question he should be asking is, "How many players have you put in the NFL in the last five years?" That time period covers an entire recruiting cycle. Playing early doesn't equate to the NFL. Given time to develop to your true potential does.

Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

I can see how the quotes in isolation might rub people the wrong way, but I don't see any problem with what he's doing.  It's a two way street, the school has to decide if he's the right guy for them, and he has to decide if it's the right place for him.  Nothing wrong with asking tough questions and wanting the school to be honest with him.  The reality is that most schools will say whatever bs they can to get him on board.  Elite schools like bama or osu are more likely to be honest because it's not like their entire recruiting class depends on him.

Osu could easily say "you probably won't see a lot of early playing time because of the level of seasoned talent around you, but we will develop you and you will reach your full potential".  They seems reasonable but if it's not what he wants to hear then so be it.  Osu also had a history of helping players who want to go elsewhere transfer.

Either way, seems like a smart guy, these are questions you want to ask before you sign up.  Once you sign is too late for that.

HS
CowCat's picture

The kid's rationale is reasonable, but it's also kind of backwards.

There will always be competition for any spot. There seems to be an increasing level of "Start me or I leave" attitude. The truth is that you'll have to compete anyway. Joe Burrow got lucky.

all true, but if a freshman comes in thinking/saying he should be playing right away, he may end up being disappointed and end up in....the portal. important that our coaches take the high road (and im sure they are) and not promise the moon like, well, you know.

Smart guy. As much as we'd all love to believe the coaches are perfect evaluators of talent and the best players are always playing, I think there's been enough examples to show that isnt the case.
Worrying about playing time is perfectly logical. Smart business decision by this kid.

HS

I too would ask about 3rd stringers. It sounds like he wants to know if coaches still coach them like first stringers. Coaches still need to coach everybody regardless of where they are on the depth chart. What would have happened with third string Cardale was ignored.

HS
Sanitarian2's picture

I wonder how many third stringers actually believe that they are were their talent level dictates. Athletes, hell people in general, are not very honest with themselves when it comes to their worth.

He’s developed a close relationship with Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson, as he has with many of the other coaching staffs as well. But McGregor recalls one time during the summer of his sophomore season, when he visited Ohio State and Johnson pulled up his tape.

The adidas All-American had been false-stepping, taking a wasted step not in the direction he was headed at the point of attack, on every snap. Johnson gave him and his Port Huron Northern coach some pointers on avoiding the mistake, and during his junior year, he never false-stepped again. Neither did his teammates.

This is just the tip of the huge iceberg that constitutes Larry Johnson's DL coaching ability.

You want to really be shown something, Mr. McGregor? Come to THE Ohio State University and be coached up by the very best. The rest is, of course, up to you.

Go Bucks.

Thanks, Buck68. Although we don't always get your sometimes abstruse, elliptical, and soaring pontifications, we do appreciate your contributions here on 11W.

Yet, I would caution you on trying to double down on your commentary to those who can't- or won't- take the time to explicate your unique musings. Defending every hill can (and occasionally does) rub fellow 11 Warriors commentators the wrong way. Thus the ensuing downvotes from your peers.

Just a little unsolicited advice from a fellow Buckeyes fan.

From Port Huron, this kid is presumed to be lazy.  Have a friend who is an umpire for games up here, said McGregor takes a lot of plays off because he is physically bigger and stronger than the kid across from him. Not exactly a hotbed for talent up here, big fish in a little pond. Harbaugh can have him.

HS
Palm beach Ohio's picture

It’s a bad look on him in my opinion. He can see the roster and pretty much guess where everyone stacks up. If your truely elite underclassmen (in your mind) and want to compete at the highest level, this is moot. LJ has shown he puts the best on the field regardless of what your star level is. He seems to want to pick and choose where he has the best shot at playing early and with a top program at that. Top programs have a pile of talent that’s why they are a top program. Plenty of programs like Arkansas, Illinois, Tennessee, Purdue, FSU, Miami and others where you’ll start right away, but good luck getting a ring. Choices are yours.

For those still following the thread it looks like he really enjoyed his visit to ND and considered committing while there saying:

There were a couple of times, like when I was sitting with coach Kelly at the lake house and he was just talking to my whole family, and we were getting a feel for each other. I was just thinking, ‘Yeah, I kind of want to commit.’ But, I have of visits scheduled, I have a couple of schools I’m pretty high on, like 10 of them. I can only take five officials and I’m hoping to take them soon, and then get a feel for those schools as well.
