Absolutely brilliant writing. I personally don't care if TTUN is 0-1,000 or 1,000-0 when OSU plays them - just keep winning.

Last season was perfect for me.  Coming in thinking they were going to walk all over us only to be bent over the barrel.  What really did it for me was seeing a  “we’re a basketball school now” sign at their first basketball game after that loss.  We literally are crushing their identity.  Just can’t wait for them to turn on their prodigal son milk steak.

Lloyd Carr was heading back to the Rose Bowl in 2001 until he ran into a comprehensively mediocre 6-win Buckeye team at home.

Well the Rose Bowl was the BCS championship game that year so Michigan wasn't heading there, but if they would have beaten Ohio State who was coming off a drubbing at home to Illinois the week before, in Michigan Stadium, they would have won the Big Ten and received the conference automatic BCS bid most likely the Sugar Bowl where Illinois went in their place.

George T Stagg is about as mythical as "The Pappy's", you just never see it. Stagg Jr is fairly available, at least in Louisville, if you want to pony up $80-100 for it. For my money, not worth it as a drinker, but nice to have in the collection. Eagle rare is just about everywhere in Louisville. Weller on the other hand is just about impossible to find. Weller Special Reserve is probably the best bourbon out there under $30 retail, although a lot of places will mark it up quite a bit. Antique 107 is a really good higher proof bourbon if that's your thing, and Weller 12 year is my favorite bourbon, period. Happy hunting!

Love this analogy! Both are very satisfying in their own way.

The major difference to me is that when ttun is good, it makes them more of a regional recruiting threat. I want all the guys we want and it sucks to lose prospects to them.

I get more hyped up for THE GAME obv. when they come in highly ranked/favored, but for the long term health of the program, the recruiting lifeblood, I think it’s best for OSU for ttun to suck.

TLDR: UM sucking is; Worse for The Game, but better for the program.

HS
SteelCurtain 59's picture

Personally I strongly prefer the teams I hate having a good season with a heartbreaking ending. Michigan being good makes us look better when we beat them, and also in my controversial opinion,  Michigan is one of those teams that college football (and to a lesser extent basketball) is better when they're relevant. Also it's a waste of time  imo to hate on a bad team, watching a 4-6 Michigan team lose is rather irrelevant to me, especially when compared to watching a 9-1 or 7-0 Michigan team lose.

Also, we are an elite college football program and should be more concerned with making the playoff and winning national championships than how we do against Michigan. In the weird hypothetical where we could either beat Michigan or win the national championship I'd take the national championship with no hesitation 100 out of 100 times.

Granted having only been an OSU fan since my freshman year (2012) I haven't seen them beat us in football yet, so my opinion might be very different than most, and when they do finally beat us it might change my view

HS

Nicely said -- you are wise beyond your (young) years!  There are many among us (although it is a declining number) who would be satisfied going 1-11 as long as the 1 win was against you-know-who.

While The Game, will always be The Game, with the B1G championship, the cf playoff and the hunt for the crystal, I am more interested, like you, in the total prize.  If Ohio State is going to recruit on a national scale, then it needs to win on a national scale -- and that means, not just against Michigan or the Big Ten.  We did that with Jim Tressel while losing two NCs in a row. For a few brief years, OSU established itself as the most over-rated cf program in the BCS era.  That has since been corrected, but only because we have won another NC, beaten Alabama, and USC.  I would have gladly traded one of the Michigan wins earlier in this decade to have beaten Florida or LSU for the natty.  If that is blasphemy, then so be it.  So, while The Game will always be the most exciting Saturday of the year, it is not the end.....it is the means to the end.

HS
semperfibuck's picture

Exactly! I too have hated TTUN since the 1950’s, but would happily trade a win against them for a NC...

and this coming season is setting up as perfect. If the Buckeyes lose in AA, it’s because our first year coach couldn’t get it done; but if the Buckeyes win up there, Katy bar the door! The streets of AA will flow red with the blood of the Wolverine faithful shooting themselves.

I understand the appeal of a national championship, but losing to UM at the end of the year probably ruins all hopes of that, just as we ruined their hopes last year.

There really is no hypothetical "trade" of a taking loss to UM then winning the national championship. It's a unicorn. It doesn't exist.

Beating UM has been, and always will be, the gateway to championships. And it's especially relevant in this playoff era, as late season losses are frowned upon by the selection committee.

I would have to agree that beating a good Michigan team is far more enjoyable than beating a bad Michigan team. I love watching their fan base get their hopes up only to be absolutely heartbroken by the product they place on the field at the end of every November. 2013 and 2016 were near heart attacks but I couldn't have been more elated to see us pull through.

However, I would have to disagree that as a program we should be more concerned about the playoff rather than how we do against Michigan. I think the two scenarios are closely intertwined. Obviously I would want to win a title, but I don't really see a scenario where we can lose the game and still be in contention for the National Championship. You're right in that we are an elite program. Elite programs win their rivalry games.

The Game is part of coming to Ohio State. The players come here knowing they will take part in the greatest rivalry in the history of college sports. I love that the staff puts emphasis on this game, I love that we spend all year prepping for them, the gold pants, beat Michigan week, calling them TTUN, I even loved the February work out video where they were punching a Michigan logo on a punching bag.

I feel like the moment we stop putting emphasis on the game is the moment the rivalry can swing the other way. Take Michigan for example this year, all their players thought they were going to walk in and out with a win. They admitted they were thinking about the Big Ten Championship Game and the college football playoff. The players all said they treated Ohio State like any other game and it showed. From the very first possession you could tell we wanted it more.

I too really began my OSU fandom since first stepping foot on campus my freshman year in 2012. Now I'm proud to say my blood boils every time I see the Maize and Blue. I have full faith in Ryan Day and the staff to continue what Urban Meyer started. I'm confident in saying that if we keep taking care of business in the game, the championships will come.

Go Bucks!

HS
Nutinpa's picture

I don't anyone is suggesting a "devaluing" of The Game.  After-all, it is unlikely we achieve our grandest goals if we don't beat Michigan -- although there could be exceptions to that as Alabama has already proven.  On the other hand, I have been around long enough to see what happens when there is a long, hangover effect after beating Michigan when it comes to bowl games, and it sure as hell is not pretty.

So, yes, beating Michigan is a key component to a successful season, but it is not the only one.  If you don't believe me, ask Tim Beck and Ed Warriner after the Clemson loss in January of 2017.  As they cleaned out their lockers (and their offices) I don't think they or anyone on that humiliated team, at the moment, gave a shit about their win over Michigan 6 weeks earlier.

HS
SteelCurtain 59's picture

See, that hypothetical was more in terms of what you as a fan value more, beating Michigan or winning the national championship? Obviously the odds of us losing to Michigan and winning the National Championship in the same season aren't exactly likely, it's more of a concept of comparison.

The players and coaches should take The Game super seriously I'm not denying that, but us as fans should not be considering our season a success or failure purely on the Michigan game. It's not a matter of devaluing The Game, as that would be ridiculous, it's a matter of holding ourselves to a higher standard. I agree that doing well in The Game will probably lead to championships, but the reverse is also true, if we keep playing at a national championship caliber level, we'll continue to have success in The Game.

And I agree that elite programs win their rivalry games, but elite programs should have elite aspirations too, not simply to beat our rivals.

I hate Michigan too and look forward to the day we finally take the all-time series lead between us so they have nothing left to brag about, but we as a fanbase shouldn't define ourselves by how we do against Michigan, just like Bama doesn't define themselves by how they do against Auburn. We should absolutely hate Michigan and emphasize that strongly, I'm merely saying we should care more about championships than our record vs Michigan, especially since we've owned them for the better part of the last 2 decades. Obviously as somebody who's never seen us lose to them (and had little experience with rivalry games prior to being an OSU fan) I can't speak with the experience of OSU fans who remember the 90s or even like 2011, so my opinion could definitely change if they end up ruining a season of ours, but until then that is my stance

Also I'm very confident and optimistic about Ryan Day as well, hopefully he brings us many championships and continues to dominate Michigan, thus making everybody happy

HS
Steelydan54's picture

Regarding the "oh so young perspective" of those who became OSU fans upon arrival on campus in the year of our Lord 20xx:  there's three centuries of OSU vs SCum history and tradition that has made this game the greatest rivalry in sports.  I've "only" been an informed fan for about 55 years and am considered a relative youngster.

Winning the Rivalry game is, and will always be Job #1 at tOSU. I'm not certain, but seriously doubt that we have EVER won a National Championship and NOT beaten TTUN. and I doubt it ever happens in the future, so the question is based on a false premise that is theoretically possible, but practically impossible.

I shudder to contemplate a season where we lost to the wolverinnnies, then went in to win the Natty; what a hollow, tasteless, phyrric victory that would be!! I shudder to put it in writing!  On the other hand, beating  TTUN and not winning the Natty might be sad; think Clemson, 2015. But any season is a winning season if we beat XICHIGAN.

Hope this helps with historical perspective. Go Bucks!  Beat Michigan!

Exactly, all. To be a Buckeye means that:

If you beat UM, even if you're 0-11 going in, you celebrate.

If you're 11-0 and lose to UM, we're most likely not in the playoffs, especially if UM is a crap team. Think Iowa or Purdue. You'll be upset for a year.

Our #1 goal has to be to beat UM, then the rest follows.

But let’s be clear - there’s no pleasure to be found in Michigan State winning anything,

Since you don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan, that would have to include MSU too, right? :)

You should get used to the one delivers shattering disappointment while getting just a little too close to the brink of its early 20th century greatness.

Well first of all, TSUN's condition is a topic of discussion because we're bored waiting for the Spring Game!

Secondly, I will tell you that I've worked in Ann Arbor for the last (glorious) eleven years.  I'm seriously worried that the fan base and the TSUN administration will get disenchanted with their football program and discontinue the program... or at least gut the hell out of it.  Every day there are alumni asking why the football staff is pulling $15 million in Salary and bennies a year.  I'm telling you, it's not sustainable.

Having said that, my favorite game in the last 20 years was Hairball's first year.  They were actually ranked somehow (10th?) and we came into Ann Arbor and cleaned their clocks 42-13.  That's the game with the "Welcome Home Coach Harbaugh" banner held up by Buckeye fans....

Also, I am in the "always suck" camp. I hate them so much that if they lost 100 games in a row by 100 points each, I would still root for them to lose the 101st game. And this last year reinforced that for me. The arrogance and down right douche baggery on display after they beat Sparty was over the top. I really enjoyed knocking them off of that pedestal they had built for themselves but they are so awful when they have hope that I truly never want to see them win again. I want to crush them so badly that they never get off the mat.

The football team bounced back quickly and consistently, producing win after win that shifted The Victors from song lyrics to game recaps. Puffery returned to fan base and the locker room, and a Revenge Tour was publicly conceived to celebrate the impending justice en route to the undeserving vandals from the 2017 season.

For That School Up North, 2018 was just another verschlimbessen season. May it always be so.

There is NO reason that tsun needs to be relevant.  Their fans believe that they are the same program that beat up on high school and tech schools during the 1900's.  I hope they never win another football title at any level.  They have been the most over rated team for the last 25 years.

1) i dont care about the other sports than Football really

2) I like UM right where they are now ie close but not quite, ie good, win a ton in general, but not quite able to get past us

In the last 18 years of dominating the rivalry, UM is still ranked in the top 25 in national win percentage and effectively tied with PSU for the 3rd best in the conference behind us and Wisconsin

in 11 of those 18 years they have been ranked at the end of the year, 4 times in the top 10 and 4 more in the top 15. So at times they have been a very solid team

BUT, they keep coming up just short, ie right where i like them to be

The season goals should always be the same:

  • Beat every team in front of you.
  • Beat the skunkweasels so badly their significant others abandon them and they're treated as a national object of mockery - something something lamentations of their women, crushing your enemies. Insert Conan reference (because the original one's a bit over the top for today's standards).
  • Win the championship.
  • All while focusing on getting good grades and progressing as humans.

Being a kid in the 60's I've seen quite a few shocking things in this rivalry.  Seen  ttun win when they were clearly the less talented team and vice versa.  Remember my father taking me to hear Woody speak several time's.  Through thick and thin I will always love and support my Buckeyes, and it wouldn't bother me in the least for us to win the next 15 games and then ttun goes into a slump....

My views are not typical of most here. For Ohio State to be it's best the B1G needs to win almost all OOC games and almost all bowl games. Kinda like the reputation of the SEC. Then a perfect scenario is undefeated and 2nd ranked Michigan comes to play the top ranked Buckeyes and a 4 point loss gets Ttun consideration like Georgia got 16 months ago. Imagine an undefeated Buckeye team with a close win in November and a rematch for the Natty.
I hate Michigan for 7 - 14 days in November every year. I cheer for them when they play preseason or in a bowl game. Dislike 24/7/365 but not hate. That's just a week or two. I am old enough to have seen the dark years before our last 2 coaches.

For those who want them to be good every year to make us look good if we defeat them. There are 12 other teams in the conference that can fill that role.

I want them destroyed. Completely. Obliterated.

When their program is so bad they withdraw from the Big Ten and the FBS and go to the FCS or Big East or just quit football all together. I want Ohio State to beat them 100-0 every time for as many times as it takes for this to happen. If we have to beat them 1,000 times straight for this to be done, so be it, as long as we do it.

And for 1,000 years if we win every time against them, I don't care if we have been the only ones to defeat them or everyone has, because we will always be the most important to crush them. Everyone else can beat them to within an inch of their lives but only we can finish them, crush and tear out their hearts, and destroy their souls.

I knew it was you, Ramzy.

And I too am a bit tired of the pseudo-German sophisticates:
"These fans tend to be German or fluent in as many as one German word that captures their fetish appropriately... It's past time for all of you to brush up on your quadrisyllabic German."

But best of all was:
"Jim Tressel was so confident the game was unloseable he had his offense running out the clock with 11 minutes remaining in the 1st quarter."

Good stuff, good medicine!

About 15 years ago I used to frequent a restaurant to watch Ohio State games that I couldn't get on regular TV. One of the regulars there was a Michigan grad whom I befriended and was actually very nice and not arrogant. He informed me that when he went to school there in the 1950's that the football players were notorious for cheating and the professors would knowingly look the other way so they would be able to stay eligible. The professors would also do other things to "help" the players in classes. This was a well-known fact within the university and student body.

HS
CowCat's picture

Well, that practice continues in a different form today. They have a "general studies" major for football players. How many non-athletes would be admitted to UM for "general studies"?  Not many, if at all.

To be honestly I wish this ending never happened. If Michigan holds on to win, even with our loss to MSU, we go to the B1G championship game and probably make the Playoffs.

In the poll era (since 1936), OSU is by far the class of the B1G:
National Titles: OSU 8, UM 3
B1G Titles: OSU 34, UM 27
Head-to-head: OSU 43, UM 36
Major Bowls (New Year's Six): OSU 20-14, UM 10-16

I have mixed feelings about MSU. Their fans are really cool. I used to go to the local MSU fan bar here in Seattle, and we all got along. I saw that MSU upset with them and I was probably celebrating the hardest. MSU fans were like "We knew you would love this".

What I don't like about MSU is Dantonio. He uses negative recruiting against Ohio State. He uses the same "underdog" strategy every time they play us. It's ringing hollow at this point.

I share this story all the time so most on here have probably read it. But it might be the coolest thing I've ever said so I'll share it again. I was watching this game at my in laws who are all michigan fans. I generally watch quietly because in my opinion, it would be rude for me to openly cheer against the households favorite team as a guest in that household. I know I would not appreciate someone coming to my house and cheering against the Buckeyes. So in the 4th quarter my wifes aunt asked who I was cheering for since I had been so quiet and I told her the truth because I'm not a liar. So of course they got all whiny that I wasn't cheering for michigan like they all were. So during the time out before this punt, I got up and started putting my shoes on so that I could leave as soon as the game was over in order to get home to watch the Buckeyes without being surrounded by michigan fans. My mother in law told me to sit down as the game was not over yet. My exact words to her were "Theres ten seconds left. Literally the only way state wins is if they block this punt and return it for a touchdown. This game is over." Then of course thats exactly what happened. The room went completely silent except for the tv and everyone was just glaring at me. If looks could kill...I didn't say a word. I just got up, put my shoes on, and walked to the car and waited for my wife. I have not been invited to watch a michigan game with my in laws since. So I won twice that day.

I'll share my favorite recollection of The Game.

Here in Seattle, OSU ex-pat fans outnumber UM fans, by far. UM has one ex-pat bar downtown, OSU has at least three bars across the area.

In 2005 I was at a supposedly "neutral" sports bar. There were exactly two UM fans vs. 30+ OSU fans. UM had the lead for the majority of the game, and the two UM fans were being their usual chardonnay-sipping, smirky selves. Then the Buckeyes won it in the last moments and the place erupted. The UM fans were absolutely horrified.

I've always found myself preferring TTUN to be pitiful.  Wanting them to lose every game.  No joy in Mudville.  But this past year has got me seeing the upside of the other side.

The 62-39 bludgeoning in The Game was the most satisfying win over that team since 2006.  Why was it so satisfying?  Because TTUN was actually...good.  Really good.  Like, probably a playoff team if they beat OSU good.  Favored to beat OSU good.  Fans were talking shit left and right about how they were going to demolish OSU, as OSU hadn't looked particularly good throughout most of the first 11 games.  I heard plenty of it.  I laughed it off.  But I knew, deep down, that OSU might be in trouble.  Beating that ass, and ruining every legitimate hope and dream of a Big Ten title and a playoff berth was far more satisfying than most years in recent history when OSU beat down an overmatched TTUN team with nothing to lose.

Add to that the basketball...TTUN one of the favorites to get back to the Final Four again.  I couldn't take another fucking year of TTUN in the Final Four.  I was so happy that Texas Tech smashed that ass in the Sweet 16.  It was a joyous moment...and one that wouldn't have been possible if TTUN was just, not good at basketball and either not in the tournament or barely in the tournament and not expected to do anything.

Don't get me wrong, I'll never complain if that team sucks.  But I can see why them being good has its benefits.  Plus, with the past couple of playoff decisions, OSU obviously needs all of the quality wins they can get (or just, you know, not take the really bad losses).  Ultimately, just beat them.  Keep beating them in football.  Get back to beating them in basketball.  Beat them in the other sports that we don't really watch.

Class of 2010.

I don’t disagree with them getting “de-pants” in from of the world. It was glorious. But I also thoroughly enjoyed watching the 14-3 game where they knew what was coming and had no answer for the brilliance of the Walrus, and Beanie pounding them into submission. I think he had like 210 that day on the frozen ground.

I have to agree with ShowThem that the most fun wins are when TTUN is ranked highly and/or favored. 2006 and 2018 come to mind. There was another game in the Urban era where it was #2 vs. #3. I can't remember the year.

So, while beating them when they're good is the most fun, I really don't care how they're ranked. The Game is always a "throw away the teams' records" sort of game. Just beat them.
